Shocker: Ford beats Government Motors in Q1
posted at 12:12 pm on May 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
“Beats” being a relative term of the amount of red ink, of course. Oddly, the New York Times and the AP neglected to mention this rather notable occurance, but BizzyBlog did the work that American journalists apparently won’t — research. For the first time in 80 years, Ford outsold GM, bringing in a topline number of $24.8 billion in sales, against the bailed-out automaker’s $22.4 billion. Both companies had severe reductions in global sales over 2008′s Q1 figures, with Ford losing almost $15 billion in revenue — and GM over $20 billion.
Ford beat GM on the bottom line, too, although that victory seems somewhat Pyrrhic as well. GM lost six billion dollars on the bottom line, while Ford managed to stanch the bleeding down to $1.4 billion. Even that shows better efficiency at Ford, with losses amounting to 105% of sales, while GM’s loss figures to 127% of sales. Clearly, if either or both are improving, it appears Ford is ahead of the curve compared to the formerly dominant manufacturer.
Ford wasn’t all that far behind GM last year, but the marketplace has shifted in Ford’s favor. While a number of factors may play into that, could buyers have more confidence in Ford and its staying power for having opted out of the bailout? And could this also be a signal from consumers that they will punish GM and potentially Chrysler as well for taking taxpayer money, especially since bankruptcy will occur anyway?

Blowback

If I was in the market for an American made car, it would be a Ford. No question.
ladyingray on May 7, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Ford is on teh cusp of the greatest marketing, ad campaign in over 40 years. They don’t need flashy new models, or enviro-baiting tech that loses money, nor do they need union sledgehammers.
They just need to say “we believe in the American people”
PR goldmine…

Ford makes nice pickups.

I wrote all three manufacturers and told them that I would never buy a product from them again if they accepted bailout money. Looks like others might have had the same sentiment?

Being from the Sooner state, I have always observed that when it came to trucks…someone was/is either a Chevy or Ford person. For me and the people I talk to, that debate is pretty much over. There is no way in HELL I would ever ever ever buy another GM or Chrysler product. May the socialist, communist, Godless unions rot forever.
…at least I’m leaning that direction.
lm10001 on May 7, 2009 at 12:17 PM
Never really been a fan of Ford (own a Chevy currently). But with the way things are going with GM and Chrysler, I could see myself owning a Ford in the future. Assuming they don’t end up being gobbled up by the .gov as well.

I’m buying foreign. Always and forever. BMW is next.

I know I’ll never buy a GM product now. Chrysler either.
I haven’t yet anyway, but my choices thus far (Nissan,Toyota, Ford) have all been good. My Ford ride as of now is great and steers me toward another Ford purchase.

Ford Motor Company all the way. Dearborn Rules. Ford has very superior products these last few years. They are better off than the lumbering giant that GM has become.
Go Ford!!

Ford has a better idea. Sell cars and stay in business to make spare parts.

Ford is trying to get their act together, while GM and Chrysler are suckling on Obama’s teat. I don’t feel so bad about buying my Mustang.

Ed are you SURE How could private-owned auto company do better than one that is run by Steve Ratner and Barack Obama. Maybe you should double check your source.

I am with ladyingray. I love my old GMC Yukon, but would not buy a new one…but the equivalent from anybody but GM or Chrysler.
I wouldn’t buy an ice cream cone from a company Obama was managing. No faith at all in management, which translates into faith in the product.

We are in the market for a new car, already have a Ford pickup but need a car to run around town in and we have narrowed the list to Ford and Toyota. Right now we are leaning Ford and once we got a decent down payment saved up we will go shopping.
You know that whole thing about being responsible. Not taking on more debt then you can afford or getting credit you can’t pay back. Silly me.

Obama will now have to cripple Ford, somehow. How will it be done? EPA? IRS? Safety? Windfall profit tax? Watch the news as we will see something come out soon to force Ford to come in line with the UAW Party line. Zero can’t allow Ford to succeed on capitialist terms.

Been a GM guy for many years. Mainly SUV’s but I do have some old Camaro’s, Chevelle, etc. My 04 Yukon is getting up in miles and even though I have never liked Fords I am seriously thinking of an Expedition as a replacement. Ford said no to the bailout and didnt cry about it. They will probably have a new customer.

Ford’s standing as a corporation has been higher than that of GM’s from before the bailouts. They didn’t need them, remember? Such a quick comparison tells us very little, if anything at all Ed. Don’t jump the gun reading tea leaves, concrete results will materialize soon enough.

I think Ford should run an ad in which they use the term, “Government Motors” for GM. Just for fun.
Wethal on May 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM
FORD used to mean “Fix Or Repair Daily”, but they’ve definitely turned things around, adapting to the market better than Cry(sler for a) Dime(ler) and GM (Government Mismanagement).
If a day comes when I can’t get a spare part for my 2004 Stratus, I will definitely buy a Ford.

Lesson for GM, and Chrysler? This is what happens, when you get into bed with a socialist dictator.
Good for Ford. Proof that Americans still want to buy American, and not some Socialist/Union product.
capejasmine on May 7, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Didn’t know that-but guess I’m doing ok then bcs we have 3 Ford pick ups & a Volvo semi.
We buy Fords bcs they seem to be able to take a beating reasonably well (we need to be able to beat the he!! out of a vehicle-all vehicles here get used for ‘ranch’ purposes eventually).
Ford is also the only decent (IMHO)heavy duty pick maker around, though some of the models suck.
The Chevy’s pick ups I’ve driven do not seem to ever have as much power as a Ford & they just feel “cheap” compared to a Ford interior.
Dodge has got some good stuff going on, but again, they seem “cheap” & they do not have as much interior room as a Ford.
Every Ford I’ve ever owned is physically more user friendly & comfortable IMHO. We got a lotta kids & dogs & my husband is a tall guy & he can fit in the Ford comfortably.
Badger40 on May 7, 2009 at 12:27 PM
Zogby or Gallup should do a poll on how many Americans would NOT buy a vehicle from a bailed out auto company….Hot Seat Poll at least?
What happens when GM sells no cars? Will we be forced to buy them?

Badger40 on May 7, 2009 at 12:29 PM
Ford was somewhat lucky in this whole fiasco. They nailed down some early financing at good rates. GM and Chrysler got in the situation where no one will loan to them. Well except for American tax payers that is.
So now we tax payers will get stuck subsidizing them even more with this $4500 voucher to trade in your clunker for a new GM or Chrysler? Is Ford included? I can see a new market emerging… “Buy your clunker here, guaranteed to make it to your nearest car dealer’s lot before it dies.”
Or maybe the dealers will provide clunkers for you, to immediately trade in.
Dasher on May 7, 2009 at 12:29 PM
Gee, if they both dumped the unions they could turn those losses into a rather healthy profit.
fogw on May 7, 2009 at 12:31 PM
The problem for Ford, compared to the Japanese and Korean car manufacturers with U.S. plants, is they’re stuck with the same UAW deals as GM and Chrysler. And if the White House and the UAW have their way, the union will have near majority control in GM and the major say-so in Chrysler, even if the Fiat sale does go through.
So between the three car companies, which one do you think the UAW and the administration are going to put the screws to come contract time unless they play along? (and while the Ford execs were smart enough to hock the store before the downturn to ride it out without government cash, William Clay Ford is such a PC lunkhead, odds are better than 50-50 he’ll cave to Obama and the unions before long, and then watch his car company start performing like his football team).

I’ve been buying new GM’s (new suburbans for me and blazers/bravadas/trailblazers for my wife) every 2 years for 20 years…(and I’ve loved them) currently own a 2008 and 07 repectively. Next year her Trailblazer is gonna become a Ford or a Toyota and my suburban will a frod or toyota the next year…

But this will all be for naught. Obama will just lower the price via gov’t subsidies to regain market share and bury Ford. Don’t think for one moment that his majesty would ever let a good power grab go to waste.

Yep, there’s a Ford in my future. I already own a 1998 Mustang convertible – great car, very reliable and cheap to repair. I’ll give it to my son when he gets his drivers license and I’ll probably buy another one.
I worked for a sub of GM the last few years and drank the GM Kool-Aid. I’m glad I’m out of there now. I bought a Saturn last year but it will be my last GM car for sure.

I rarely watch Glenn Beck, but tuned in yesterday because I wanted to see the doofus from ACORN try , and weasle his way thru the interview. Anyway lol….I tuned in, and at the beginning of the show, Glenn was talking about GM, and the Union getting 55% ownership, and what was going on with the creditors. He used some visual aids.
Now I haven’t heard this anywhere else, but he said….that GM has been guaranteed another 3.2 billion bailout, should they go bankrupt.
So in answer to your question…be ready to cough up more, if they start to go belly up.

Like Jon said above, if the UAW gets Chrysler and GM, Ford is doomed. The UAW will kill off Ford. The car companies are vehicles (no pun intended) to redistribute creditor and taxpayer money to the UAW. This has nothing to do with automobiles.

I am not surprised Honda is at the top of your list.
I have a 89 Honda Accord. It has about 220,000 miles on a second engine(bro in law took out the engine at 40,000miles-his fault).
It’s gone through 3 teenagers & an accident with a large deer.
Now I think the head gasket might be blown-husband is gonna take a look at it when he gets the time-meanwhile I’m running on 3 cylinders, gotta add water daily, but it still keep chugging along.
In short-I wish Honda would made a heavy duty pick up bcs I’d be 1st in the line to buy one.

I work in the auto industry and the thought of Fiat bringing quality cars to the US through Chrysler is a sad pitiful joke.
And, my ask, why the hell are Japanese and Korean car companies with manufacturing plants in the USA a bad thing but an Italian car company with manufacturing plants in the USA a good thing? Oh, right….the latter is with the UAW.

Good on Ford. Seems they still have some of the Henry Ford fight left in them.
GM and Chrysler signed on very quickly to FDR’s commie Blue Eagle code back in the ’30′s as well.
Henry Ford told them to stick it. “I do not think that this country is ready to be treated like Russia for a while. There is a lot of the pioneer spirit here yet.”
Caper29 on May 7, 2009 at 12:58 PM
By the way, last I heard, Toyota cars have a larger percentage of American-made parts and materials than the supposed “American” car makers do. So I wouldn’t feel bad about buying a Toyota.
joe_doufu on May 7, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Obama should just design a new car himself. Seems to me that another head of state did that decades ago, so Obama, the greatest leader ever, should be able to also.
It will have 2 steering wheels, one to go one way and another to quickly go another way. It will have a GPS system that will tell the driver exactly where he is no matter which of the 57 states he is in. It will get about 1 mpg but the drivers manual will say that it will start getting 100mpg if you drive it for at least 4 years. It will have a hood ornament that looks like Michelle’s lower jaw. In the glove compartment will be a mini-me Rahm Emanuel who will jump out and fix a traffic ticket if the driver should get one. If it is used as a company car the no extra cost Geithner on board computer program option will compute the mileage for tax purposes and do so very much to the owner’s advantage and that could pay for the car right there!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the HopeNChange mobile. Get your advance orders in and beat the crowd. Discounts for volume purchases. No down payment necessary just as long as your kids or grandkids have a credit card or are expected to get one someday. If you or your kids or your grandkids can not pay, you will all be sold to the Chinese as coolies.
MB4 on May 7, 2009 at 1:01 PM
One of the reasons is that according to a recent consumer reports article I read, Ford is actually catching up to the Japanese in terms of quality. GM? Not so much.
Granted they’re not there yet … but there’s movement in the right direction.
Personally I’m just glad Honda makes the drivetrain in my car, even if it is an American model…
TheUnrepentantGeek on May 7, 2009 at 1:05 PM
That is a problem.
In fact, I’d see all UAW bosses over all the workers for Ford as being potential cases of conflict-of-interest… every one of them. They’ll probably pull a stunt.

I’d buy a Ford or even a foreign car before I’d buy a gubmit car.
Obviously when gubmit finds it’s not selling enough of its cars, they’ll manipulate the tax code and other regulations to try to put Ford out of business. After Ford goes out, they’ll tax auto imports out of the price range of most car buyers, until gubmit-made cars are the only practical choice.
Gubmit Motors will be a perpetual funding machine for Dems, since gubmit and UAW own almost all the company. Purchase payments to the manufacturer will be laundered by UAW and end up in Dem Party coffers.

I gave my 2000 Intrepid to my son when he went off to college at the University of Minnesota (nod to Ed). Until I bought my first Outback in 1997 I was a loyal, satisfied Chrysler customer. Since then I have purchased a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertable, a 2005 VW Jetta TDI and replaced the ’97 Subi with a ’07 model. It looks like I have bought my last American nameplate. Unless Ford imports or produces their high mileage diesel Fiesta my next car will be German or Japanese.
My advice to Bill Ford: Re-incorporate Ford Motor Company in a business friendly country like the Netherlands or Switzerland. Barak “Il Duce” Obama will never let you suceed if you stay in Detroit.

Up until now, I bought American Brand Cars only — maybe suffered a little with quality, but not complaining. But now that the UAW is at war with the American taxpayer (they’ve ALWAYS been at war with GM, Ford and Chrysler — why do you think the car cos. are in this mess?), I think the opposite strategy is better. Buy Toyota, Honda and Nissan and starve the thug union.
