When one of the polygamist cults was in the news a few years ago, I remember reading a profile piece about them in Newsweek (IIRC). Almost every one of the wives was receiving “public assistance” (i.e. welfare checks), and had been for many years. I was struck by the irony: they demand the right to be left alone to live their lives as they see fit, but at the same time they also expect the rest of us to finance their lifestyle choice for them. Unbelievable.
