Buxom gay-marriage opponent fires Army officer for being gay; Update: Video added

No, not Miss California. The other buxom gay-marriage opponent. The one whose supposedly good intentions are starting to wear thin.
Say, isn’t he required by law to fire him? Well, even if he was, he’ll have a filibuster-proof majority in Congress soon to change that law if he likes. But, strictly speaking: No, he’s not required.
A new study, about to be published by a group of experts in military law, shows that President Obama does, in fact, have stroke-of-the-pen authority to suspend gay discharges. The “don’t ask, don’t tell” law requires the military to fire anyone found to be gay or lesbian. But there is nothing requiring the military to make such a finding. The president can simply order the military to stop investigating service members’ sexuality.
An executive order would not get rid of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, but would take the critical step of suspending its implementation, hence rendering it effectively dead. Once people see gays and lesbians serving openly, legally and without problems, it will be much easier to get rid of the law at a later time.
I spent a day with Dan Choi last month, and he is not someone we want to fire from the military. He loves the armed forces. He served bravely under tough combat conditions in Iraq. His Arabic is excellent, and he used his language skills to diffuse many tough situations and to save lives, both Iraqi and American. All of his unit mates know he is gay, and they have been very supportive of him. But he doesn’t want to live a lie.
Choi’s being interviewed on Rachel Maddow’s show as I write this; I’ll update with video once it’s available. It’d be nice to see the president of the United States, for once, face 1/1000th of the heat Carrie Prejean’s taken for voicing her opinion at a beauty pageant.
Update: As promised, here’s the video from tonight’s show.

To do this, one would need a strong belief system, strong faith in ones self, and others, convictions, and principles. I don’t think Obama has much of these, if any.
I also agree that “don’t ask, don’t tell” needs to go. If gays want to serve, let them.

You don’t make rules based on exceptions.
You make rules based on principles.
Laurie Piestewa (sp?) served courageously & gave her life on the front lines in Iraq. But I’m still opposed to women in combat because generally they’re not suited for it for a variety of reasons.
I’m sure Dan Choi did well as a GI, but generally it would be bad for the military to allow “out” homosexuals to share rooms, share foxholes, share showers with others.

When will you get it!!!
……. The more you shove your homosexuality in the faces of heterosexuals, and diss us, and protest, and be activists, and march, and walk down the street during your “gay pride” parades naked having sex in public, the more we, or at least I get pissed off.
Just live your life and be an American……..

A heterosexual expressing gratitude that he didn’t have to room with a homosexual should be no more objectionable than a heterosexual expressing gratitude that he didn’t have to room with someone of the opposite sex.
It’s no more scandalous than separate bathrooms for men and women.

First, you’d have a huge drop in enlistment of straights.
Then you’d see a huge amount of enlistment by homosexuals.
So they’ll go from 2% of the population to 20% of the military.
Then you’ll have orgies, “gay military pride” parades, cross-dressing, homosexuals flirting with straights, & who knows what else.
And the 80% straight will shrink to 50%, & so on…

Well, from personal experience, I have no problems with homosexuals serving in the military. I believe that we should remove all barriers to their enlistment and retention, provided they meet the established criteria for all servicemen and women.
I have over 5K hours of combat aircrew time with the US Navy. I served alongside two men who were both gay. Everyone in the squadron knew they were gay. Nobody cared. they were consummate professionals, and both were my friends. One was a roommate. I trusted them with my life, as they trusted me with theirs.
The point is that neither openly admitted they were gay, or expected to be treated any different because of that. Both told ME of their orientation, but to my mind, it was a non-starter. As long as they showed up to work, knew their jobs and were squared away, that was all that mattered. I knew I could trust them and they could trust me.
There was a time when blacks weren’t allowed to serve, and then, when admitted, were kept apart from whites. there was a time when women weren’t allowed to serve.
I’ve seen the pointy end of the spear. I’ve lost good and close friends. To my mind, if you are a citizen and wish to serve and meet the proper requirements, then that is all that should matter.
Other’s mileage may vary. I understand that. However, I’ve been there and this is just the way I see things.
respects,

My question exactly. I did not watch the interview because I will never support msnbc, but if the guy loves the military, performs well in battle and truly wants to be the best soldier possible, where does his sexuality come in? Are all the straight soldiers constantly talking about women and sex with women and hooting and hollering at the women like perverts and he’s uncomfortable having to join in? Where in the job of soldier does it state that you have to act your sexual preference? I thought it was about working and fighting as a extremely disciplined team. What is the deal here?

Cindy Munford on May 7, 2009 at 10:08 PM
I don’t think it’s particularly brave to get yourself kicked out of the military by proclaiming your homosexuality. I think it’s far more honorable to concede that there are far reaching implications for military personnel to be open about their sexual orientation and if an individual can’t reconcile themselves with that, to resign.
lowandslow on May 7, 2009 at 10:08 PM
Self-righteous preening really doesn’t improve the existing tension on this issue, JB. Sorry to sound harsh, but what O’Bonehead is facing on gays in the military is the same thing Clinton faced: he wants to be a good little liberal and impose his ignorant viewpoint on the people who volunteer to take up arms, risk their lives, and defend the country, but he has not one single idea what goes through their minds. He didn’t serve; he doesn’t know which end of a rifle the bullets come out of; and he’s never sacrificed anything or risked his life before.
So he has no choice but to take their demands seriously. And they demand a great degree of control over this issue. He’s handcuffed.

I don’t know what you mean, but there are other posts from him down thread of where I linked.
Loxodonta on May 7, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Perhaps part of the problem is a matter of perception. People still tend to think gay=liberal, and not just liberal but raging-drag-queen-wearing-ass-chaps liberal at that. And if not that perception, then they’re thought of as (somewhat ironically) super-butch bullies who will stomp around having their way with whichever poor 18 year old ‘boy’ they want. A few people in this thread have highlighted that perception quite clearly already. I’ll go out on a limb here and propose it’s still possible to be both gay and a ‘man’.
“let’s roll”, if I recall, after all.
Reaps on May 7, 2009 at 10:18 PM
I totally agree. Clinton, as one of his campaign promises, said he’d open the military for gays to openly serve. As usual for a Democrat, he pandered…knowing full well he couldn’t keep that promise.
For the record (as I usually have to do) I absolutely believe the military is there for a distinct purpose. And if the military commanders believe that gays openly serving would be detrimental to the job the military is there to do, then I’m all for it.
What I’m trying to say, is that even in these circumstances (or especially in these circumstances) imagine what that does to a person who volunteers to fight for his/her country…that they have to “hide” an integral part of who they are. They fight, and die, for the freedoms of all Americans. Yet, are not free themselves.
It’s easy to see how this can affect a person.

sven10077 on May 7, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is a lousy regulation for the military. It requires members of the armed forces to lie.
If Choi was engaged in activities that were clearly detrimental to his units morale, efficiency and combat readiness, then, yes, a discharge or re-assignment would be in order, as it is for any disruptive troop.
But, absent that detriment…?

There are actually quite a few gays that are decent human beings. Being a decent, good, honest, human being doesn’t mean you are not a sinner who has fallen short of the grace of god, but it also doesn’t automatically make you a mentally diseased perverted reprobate like Perez Hilton either.
When I fronted the band Dorian Grey my bass player and drummer were both gay. They were two of the most honest, kind, decent human beings that I have ever known. In this respect I believe you have to see gays just as you would any other human being, on the merits of who they are, not their sexual preference.
In the end it is God who will judge them, not you, me or anyone else.
