Video: Would-be rapist/murderers receive Second Amendment lesson

posted at 4:05 pm on May 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

This one’s too good to be left languishing in Headlines. Glance at the news reports describing what happened and you might think it was a routine burglary that went awry when the homeowner surprised them. Not so much. Needless to say, the shooter’s free and clear of any homicide charges, but I wonder if they’re going to charge him with a lesser offense: While Georgia’s gun laws are pretty lax (no state registration required), you do need a license to carry outside your own home. Did the shooter have one? Was it even his own gun that he grabbed out of the backpack? If he gets anything more than a very short suspended sentence, it’ll be a travesty. Click the image to watch.

Since we have most of our Hot Air gun nuts on this thread, I’ll repost this:

If you think it’s hard to get ammo now, just wait until
Assembly Bill 962 (sounds innocuous, doesn’t it?) gets passed.

STOCK UP ON YOUR AMMO RIGHT NOW FOLKS!!!eleventy!!1!!

Assembly Bill 962 in a nutshell:

This bill would require that commencing July 1, 2010, unless specifically excluded, no person shall sell or transfer more than 50 rounds of handgun ammunition in any month unless he or she is registered as a handgun ammunition vendor, as defined.
The bill would also require these vendors to obtain a background clearance for those employees who would handle ammunition in the course and scope of their employment.
The bill would require the Department of Justice to maintain a registry of registered handgun ammunition vendors, as specified. Violation of these provisions, as specified, would be a misdemeanor.
By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.
The bill would also provide that no retail seller of ammunition shall sell, offer for sale, or display for sale, any handgun ammunition in a manner that allows that ammunition to be accessible to a purchaser without the assistance of the retailer or employee
thereof.
The bill would further provide that handgun ammunition may only be purchased in a face-to-face transaction and only if certain conditions exist.
Existing law generally regulates what information is required to be obtained in connection with the transfer of ammunition.

ie – no ammo out on the shelves of stores
no internet ammo sales
can’t buy more than 50 rounds per month

This bill is being heard by the Assembly Committee on Appropriations TODAY!

The NRA publishes a monthly mag called America’s First Freedom, with a regular section titled “Armed Citizen.” There are stories like this in every single issue, that you never hear about in the MSM.

BTW if you are a gun owner and haven’t yet joined the NRA, now is the time. Obama has packed his Administration with anti-gun zealots, and the coming assault on the 2nd Amendment is going to be the worst ever.

this was a heart warmer especially since all you usually hear about is columbine, Virginia Tech, and others. this only goes to prove what we’ve been saying all along. “(shaking head) If only someone sane had had a gun and could have saved the lives of a few of the others.” if the teacher god rest his soul (that had blocked the door so others could escape giving his own life) at Virginia Tech had had a pistol, maybe that would have had a happier ending like this one did.

Hey Allah!

While Georgia’s gun laws are pretty lax (no state registration required),

Are you insane?

Registration is the first step to confiscation! The only reason anyone wants to register guns is to know “who has them”. That is of interest only if you want to come and take them away.

For you to describe this as

pretty lax

put you firmly in the clueless moron category.

What would you describe as “reasonable”? DNA testing? A government permit to own a gun? (Proof positive that it doesn’t take brains to blog!)

…seeing African American students defending themselves against black on black crime will make their heads explode!

I found this aspect of the story interesting. Often times when we see black on black crime witnesses refuse to call the police or offer testimony. Here the victims defend themselves and vanquish the thugs. To top it all off the police in Georgia don’t try to make the hero out to be a reckless gun owner or worse a criminal. This was a good story!

jimboslice on May 6, 2009 at 9:00 PM

I hear that a lot, and don’t disagree. The wall penetration of a 20 vs 12 is the factor. You don’t want to accidently hit Johnny in room #2. I keep heavy birdshot in my 12 (less poor Johnny factor) but keep six 00s in the buttstock for those just in case I need them moments.

Limerick on May 6, 2009 at 5:14 PM

If you use birdshot for self defense, The Box of Truth site is one you may want to read.

Realistically, if it will not penetrate walls, it will not penetrate a human reliably.

MoCoM on May 6, 2009 at 9:12 PM

While Georgia’s gun laws are pretty lax (no state registration required), you do need a license to carry outside your own home

Yes, but if you look at the law you will note that if this was at on campus housing instead of off campus housing then the gun would have been illegal.

Weapons on school property and functions: It is (felony offense) unlawful for a person to carry ANY type of weapon onto or within 1,000 feet of real property owned or leased by any public or private elementary school, secondary school, or school board and used for elementary or secondary education and in, on, or within 1,000 feet of the campus of any public or private technical school, vocational school, college, university, or institution of post secondary education.

I wonder if this will prompt them to change that part of the law.

I prefer an alternating stack of full metal jacket and hollow point. Sometimes you DO want the ability to effectively shoot through material. Particularly if your perp has watched too many movies and has an unreasonably high opinion of the protective stopping power of 1/4 inch drywall and 2×4 construction.

faol on May 6, 2009 at 10:22 PM

I am having too much fun with my new Marlin 1895 lever action in 45-70; at least after I upgraded the recoil pad. With the scope and the new ammo I can get small groups at 100 yds easily. If I ever have to shoot in self defense I don’t think a wall or a car or a vest will make much difference.
On the other hand; if I ever run into a critter that can’t be stopped with 5 rounds of 405 gr JSP I probably should have spent the time running instead of shooting.

moxie_neanderthal on May 6, 2009 at 10:07 PM

Absolutely! One of the reasons I went to a heavy magnum revolver. Basically the inside of a house is transparent to your weapon. Take the extra 1/4 second and line up the sights and squeeze. Furniture, inside walls, doors, etc are essentially transparent to a high powered handgun. A lot more practice to get good, but when you can toss an orange into the air and hit it, or clang a 12 by 12 steel plate at 200 yards or empty the cylinder in 2.5 sec with full loads into 6 targets, you will have learned.

Bravo to your marksmanship; I might be able to come close if I had enough money and time to devote to practice. My Dad used to shoot tin cans with his 357 at 75 yards, we used to sit in the back yard and clip pine cones out of the trees with our pellet guns after work. It can be done but it takes a lot of practice.

mad scientist on May 6, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Then I was persuaded into picking it back up, and after I shot for the first time, I got a little sh*t eating grin on my face

During summer family vacations at Dad’s farm, we spend time target shooting. My niece was 11 last year and my brother let her shoot his .300 Savage for the first time. She took aim, fired, got knocked back a few inches by the recoil and looked up with the biggest grin on her face. Her words? “That was AWESOME!”
She just got a .22 for her 12′th birthday.

Just learn with someone who is professional, safe, and trustworthy. You’ll have a good time that way.

blatantblue on May 6, 2009 at 4:43 PM

First and primary rule of gun handling: Every gun you pick up is loaded and ready to fire. Even if the person who gave it to you says it isn’t. If if you unloaded it 5 minutes ago. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded and you aren’t going to hurt yourself or anyone else.

AZfederalist on May 6, 2009 at 11:00 PM

A friend sent me a picture of a woman firing at a target in a darkened setting. It’s taken from the right rear and you can read on the back of her t-shirt, this:

Gun Control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

Does anyone know where this shirt can be purchased?

“…if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”

The term assult weapon has been used as a cudgel by gun opponents to control the debate for far too long. It is now part of the lexicon but has become so bastardized and meaningless to everyone except those who wish to politicize gun ownership. The phrase itself is a translation of the WWII Sturmgewehr “storm-rifle”.

Last time I checked, none of the guns available for general public purchase come with a selector switch. I know…facts should never get in the way of good intentions.

I wonder sometimes what it would be like to have to use deadly force and would I have the stones to do it. I think it’s healthy to have that little bit of doubt. It helps to keep an edge and pushes me to practice more so that, should that day ever come, I will at least be confident that I can hit what I aim at. I think it may be like when I had my first parachute malfunction and had to cut away my main. My reaction was by the numbers, without any emotion, and I got that reserve out just like we practiced on the ground.
The emotions and “shakes” came after I landed and started thinking about what might have been. Maybe it was like that for the homeowner. Focus on the problem and resolve it and deal with the emotions later.
Score one for the good guys.

Really hard to tell what anyone would do in a hairy situation. I want to get a conceal permit but I’m not sure if I would actually carry. I live in a very safe area in Northern Va and in 54 years never had an incident where I wished I had one. However, as we get older and become more of a target it would be nice to cower then suprise an attacker. The VA Tech massacre still bothers me. So many cowardly young men let that asshole slaughter. Guess they were all on Ritalin to supress their aggressive male behavior.

No, they were attemtping to start a concensus circle and were ready to vote on who would be the facilitator when the shooter, in an unreasonable fit of non-group think, opened fire.

Amazingly, none of the survivors was able to make any mention of the shooter’s reasoning; they were also upset that they weren’t given an opportunity to join with the shooter in his protest against…..whatever is was. They place the blame for that on the Va. Tech Administrators, whose policy’s obviously drove the shooter over the limits of his mental capacity.

Then you won’t, faol. It’s too bad too. Concealed weapons almost always save lives.
