Rush to Colin Powell: Become a Democrat, please

posted at 9:27 pm on May 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

Isn’t he a Democrat already? He voted for Obama and thinks it’s time for big government. He’s a Republican at this point the same way Andrew Sullivan is.

On the other hand, why is Rush telling people what to call themselves? I thought he’s always fancied himself less a voice for Republicans than for conservatives. If Powell and Meghan McCain want to label themselves Republican, terrific; the Limbaugh mission, or so I’ve assumed, is to ensure that the GOP’s platform and leadership are each appropriately conservative. If Colin Powell can help attract people to that platform, why purge him? Granted, it’s not going to happen today, but who knows how it’ll shake out in 2012?

For more red meat, try this snippet from Greg Hengler of Rush saluting Palin. For what it’s worth, I told Andy Levy today that I wished he’d become a Republican — just so Rush could kick him out of the party. Click the image to watch.

So, why wouldn’t the same logic apply to the other Confederate states?

Powell was a political general, i.e. an opportunist. If a Democrat – Carter or someone else – had been elected Prez in 1980, 1984 and 1988, Powell would have sucked up to and kissed the ass of that administration as well.

If we’d had a different Chairman Of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff back in 1990-91, we wouldn’t have called off the pursuit & destruction of Hussein’s Iraqi Army out of some misplaced sense of squeamishness. Powell called for an early cessation of hostilities, allowing Hussein (Saddam, not B.H.O.)to scamper to safety with a sizable portion of his army intact, free to continue a further decade of misery and thuggishness towards the Iraqi people.

California? “Second-most-southern?” How?

Hawaii, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, Arizona — all extend farther south than California. Heck, even South Carolina extends slightly south of southernmost CA.

Or do you mean something else by “second most southern?”

I mean, not that it affects your argument a bit, but….

notropis on May 6, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Well, there was this:

Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain’s campaign, as well as in his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Powell says he does not believe Palin is ready to take over as president, if necessary.

ROFL…oooooh, that dirty, below-the-belt McCain campaign! And heck, most of the people who post on this blog were more prepared than Obama to be president.

Which nation you talking about? I mean, there are plenty of “Californians,” like the La Raza folks, who maintain that California extends all the way UP to Oregon…. But then, I don’t think their ancestors sympathized with the Confederacy….

It makes perfect sense to drop potential leaders like Powell, if indeed “moderate” policies such as the failed Bush/McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill and the Bush response to the econimic crisis are responsible for the current position the Republicans are in.

robertnyc212 on May 7, 2009 at 12:05 AM

“look it up”

I did.

“While starting the attack, Bush’s aircraft was hit and his engine caught on fire. He completed his attack and released the bombs over his target scoring several damaging hits. With his engine on fire, Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member on the TBM Avenger bailed out of the aircraft. However, the other man’s chute did not open and he fell to his death. It was never determined which man bailed out with Bush. Both Delaney and White were killed in action. While Bush anxiously waited four hours in his inflated raft, several fighters circled protectively overhead until he was rescued by the lifeguard submarine, USS Finback. For this action, Bush received the Distinguished Flying Cross. During the month he remained on Finback, Bush participated in the rescue of other pilots.”

But I didn’t need to. I already knew that about him. Comes from not being a totally ignorant fool.

Getting shot down, while flying a bombing mission, makes you a cowardly elitist east-cost effete snob.

Getting shot at, while your feet are on the ground, makes you a hero.

Falling from 1000 feet to near-certain death is nothing.

Falling six feet into the mud is scary.

I’m happy my country never called on me to do either; and I’ll readily give “hero” status to both of the above, but I’m just trying to keep my juvenile lefty talking points straight. I may have to eat lunch in the faculty lounge tomorrow.

I may have to eat lunch in the faculty lounge tomorrow.

That’s always fun… and mind melting empowering!

The troll was imitating Bucky the Cat, except Bucky is a conservative. Liberals can’t do anything right.

People should wake up to the fact that we have a two-party system, not a parlimentary system. This will probably always be the case thanks to the electoral college which mandates that the president-elect have a majority – not a plurality – of the electoral votes. That fact forces people of competing interests to form no more than two parties capable of carrying a majority. Third parties usually do not last long becaue they cancel out the impact of a second party leaving one party rule. For example the Whigs did not last long once the Republican Party was formed.

In a parlimentary system the ruling government is formed by the coalition of parties and those parties do not always agree on matters of public policy. In our system, each of the two parties must itself act as a coalition of different interests but largely common interests.

I like Rush, but we also have to realize that the Republican party in order to be successful must form a coalition of different types of candidates. The Democrats understand this and thus were able to elect a colleciton of blue dog Democrats from traditionally conservative states. While they blue dogs do not control policy the fact that they are allowed to represent the Democrats has made the Dems the ruling coalition of this country.

I do not see how one can grow the party by kicking people out of the party.

On the other hand, why is Rush telling people what to call themselves?

Why are people calling themselves something they’re very clearly not? Why are they giving ammunition to those who are trying to change this country into something less?

“I do not see how one can grow the party by kicking people out of the party.”

And yet, Powell insisted that the Republican Party would be better off without Rush.

And Arlen Specter, just before (or after) he switched, insisted that the Republican Party would be better off without the social conservatives.

I’ll repeat my challenge to the Powell-Snowe-Parker-Frum wing of the Republican party: Tell me clearly what, in your minds, differentiates you from the Democrats. The right wing of the Party is not shy about staking out its ground. The closest I’ve heard from the other side was some nonsense by either Collins or Snowe last week, talking about fiscal conservatism. This from one of the porkulus backers. Gotta make the distinction a little clearer than that.

This calls for a HA first – an old Yiddish joke! (as told to me by my Romanian grandmother)

A guy goes out and buys himself a boat. He takes his mother out on his boat, puts on a captain’s hat and says “Hey ma, look at me! I’m a captain!”
His mother shrugs and says, “look, darling, to me, you’re a captain, to you, you’re a captain, but to a captain….?”

Colin Powell voting for Obama = democrat

Rush Limbaugh voting for McCain + Republican

Another guest then asked Mr. McCain, Mr. Whitford recalled, whether he had voted for Mr. Bush. “And he put his finger in front of his mouth and mouthed, ‘No way,’ ” Mr. Whitford said.

Mr. Schiff, who played Toby Ziegler, the White House communications director on “The West Wing,” said he was listening to Mr. McCain from the other of the two tables in the room.

“Someone asked, ‘What do you think of Bush?’ ” Mr. Schiff recalled. “My recollection, and I have to qualify this, because I’m not 100 percent sure he used this word, but my recollection is that McCain said that Bush was dangerous and he didn’t trust him. Then this person said, ‘Why did you support him?’ And McCain said, ‘It was my obligation as a Republican to support the Republican candidate.’ And the person said, ‘Did you vote for him?’ And McCain said, ‘No.’ ”
