The Chinese have the ultimate weapon, should they choose to use it: dumping their huge reserves of American dollars on the open market, thus sending the US into a terrible depression and incredible currency inflation.

If the Chinese were to unload their dollars precipitously, it would cause the rest of the world's hard dollars (those actual dollar bills in the Middle East and Asia stuffed in mattresses) to likewise be unloaded onto the market. We would wake up with our dollar being worth perhaps a tenth or less of what it was worth the day before. China has already decided to reduce or eliminate its purchases of US Treasury debt; flooding the market with their dollar reserves is just the next step.

Chinese banks shutting down the debt financing circle jerk.
Chinese bots shutting down our electric grid.
Chinese boats shutting down our navy.
Chinese toys shutting down our nascent minds with lead poisoning.
Chinese agribusiness shutting down our lymph nodes.
Chinese drywall shutting down the home improvement sector.
Hey, how bout some more of that most favored nation status crap?

Western_Civ on May 6, 2009 at 11:18 AM

The entire lead toy paint thing can be easily explained away. Ya see, Chinese factory supervisors don't use paperwork, it's all verbal. So one day Hasbro and Mattel phone in some orders for toys painted with RED PAINT. But since Mandarin speakers routinely mix up their R's for L's, it became "Hey, Hua Guo Feng! Use LED PAINT on those ten thousand units of toys! And I'm out of smokes. Go out and buy me a carton of Progressive Workers Revolution cigarettes, willya?"

What, too soon?

DarkCurrent:

What is China doing that we wouldn’t/shouldn’t do under similar circumstance?

Oh, shadowing our ships during exercises in international or sovereign waters, occasionally shooting at us in Int. waters without justification, illegally seizing various ships under our protection, the list goes on.

Oh yes, and I was looking for YiZhangZhe, but no matter, you'll do just as well.

Yes, China is a potential strategic threat we need to take seriously. On the other hand, if we had Chinese naval ships operating near our shores even in international waters, would/should we not get up close and challenge them? I hope we would.

We will probably give them California so they will just leave us alone… DL13 on May 6, 2009 at 2:23 PM

No, Mexico gets California.

I think the Japanese already have some nukes ........ just like Israel. One troubling thought is that China does have a great imbalance in the sexes due their one child policy. They have some 50 million more men than women. This has to lead to some social problems in China.

We rely on nations in that area to help contain china.

The solution to a chinese build up is to build up the japanese, australians, south koreans, and indians.

improved local fleets added to existing US assets should be more then capable but these countries need to join the exercise and become competent at acting as our auxiliaries and proxies. We all share a common interest in a contained china.

Before our lives are done, there will be a war between China and the US. That clash is inevitable. China wishes to dominate the world, and the only thing standing in their way is the US. They trade with us only to get our money to finance their empire. Once they have finally acquired the resources needed to strike, they will. This is the beginning of the final countdown.

keep the change on May 6, 2009 at 1:15 PM

When that happens, do you think the Left will realize what real hegemony & imperials look like and then regret undermining the U.S.?

Nah, me neither.

Hot Air readers may also be interested in an article in the May 09 US Naval Institute Proceedings magazine. The article's title is "On the Verge of a Game Changer" and discusses recent Chinese development and publications regarding land based anti ship ballistic missiles [ASBM].

... Indeed, the mere perception that China might have an antiship ballistic missile (ASBM) capability could be a game-changer, with profound consequences for deterrence, military operations, and the balance of power in the Western Pacific.

While Chinese ASBM capability remains uncertain, relevant U.S. government sources state consistently that Beijing is pursuing an ASBM based on a variant of the 1,500 km-plus range DF-21/CSS-5 solid propellant medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM). According to the Department of Defense, if supported by "a sophisticated command-and-control system," e.g., accurate real-time target data, from China's growing family of terrestrial and space-based sensors, ASBMs could hold U.S. carrier strike groups at risk in the Western Pacific. Further, China's use of submunitions might render a carrier operationally ineffective without sinking it, thereby achieving its objectives with a (perceived) lower risk of escalation

… Indeed, the mere perception that China might have an antiship ballistic missile (ASBM) capability could be a game-changer, with profound consequences for deterrence, military operations, and the balance of power in the Western Pacific.

While Chinese ASBM capability remains uncertain, relevant U.S. government sources state consistently that Beijing is pursuing an ASBM based on a variant of the 1,500 km-plus range DF-21/CSS-5 solid propellant medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM). According to the Department of Defense, if supported by “a sophisticated command-and-control system,” e.g., accurate real-time target data, from China’s growing family of terrestrial and space-based sensors, ASBMs could hold U.S. carrier strike groups at risk in the Western Pacific. Further, China’s use of submunitions might render a carrier operationally ineffective without sinking it, thereby achieving its objectives with a (perceived) lower risk of escalation

"The lack of protest probably told Beijing all they need to know about Obama. If you challenge him often enough, he’ll back down."

Before long, if we want the straight scoop on news, we’ll be depending on papers like the Jerusalem Post, India’s Times, and the Beijing Bugle.

It was a paper in Beiruit that broke the Iran-Contra Affair.

"China is a tiny country”

I remember Iran is a small country :)

Yep this is what it is like to have the geography challenged in charge...of all 57 states. Ask Janet Napolitano, tell us how the 9/11 terrorists came over the Canadian Border, and how the Canadian Border is as dangerous as the Drug Cartel Infested Southern Border. My child has to pass TAKS Geography to move on to the next grade. How did Obama and Napolitano get left behind?

Napolitano doesn't know anything about Islamic extremest you know man made disasters...These Bureaucrats should be forced to pass the same test as immigrants to become naturalized citizens. There's a Civics part of that test too. It tells you all about the U.S. being a Republic not a Democracy.
