China continues challenging Navy ships in Yellow Sea

posted at 10:55 am on May 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The provocations from China have continued, but you may not know it.  According to the AP, the Obama administration has started playing down these challenges to the US Navy.  The latest incident occurred yesterday, involving two Chinese vessels who came within 30 yards of a ship conducting a sub hunt:

The Pentagon Tuesday played down a confrontation between Chinese vessels and one of its Navy surveillance ships, taking a decidedly more low-key tone than during similar incidents two months ago.

In what has become almost a routine cat-and-mouse game on the seas, there have been four incidents in the past month in which Chinese-flagged fishing vessels maneuvered too close to two unarmed ships crewed by civilians and used by the Pentagon to do underwater surveillance and submarine hunting missions, two defense officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss some of the incidents and details that the Pentagon has not yet released, adding that they fear such maneuvers are not just dangerous in themselves but could lead to escalated incidents. …

The Victorious crew sounded its alarm and shot water from its fire hoses to try to deter the vessels in an hour-long incident, one official said. The vessels didn’t leave until the Victorious radioed a nearby Chinese military vessel for help, said Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman.

After incidents in March that included similar though apparently more aggressive Chinese maneuvers, the Pentagon protested to Beijing officials and issued a strong public statement calling the Chinese actions harassment.

But on Tuesday, Whitman declined to characterize what the Chinese vessels were trying to do, saying only that their actions were “unsafe and dangerous.”

The lack of protest probably told Beijing all they need to know about Obama.  If you challenge him often enough, he’ll back down.  That seems to be the case here, in which Chinese “fishing vessels” harrassed warships for an hour in international waters, and the US has nothing to say about it except for safety concerns.  What’s next, a PSA for life preservers?

The White House wasn’t the only group downplaying the incident, either.  No national media except the AP carried the story.  The New York Times, an AP partner, didn’t even carry this report.  In fact, they didn’t report on it at all, and the latest story on the Yellow Sea was an accident involving a Chinese submarine from May 3rd — which would have provided an interesting springboard for this story.

With China expanding its blue-water navy and almost certainly expanding its submarine assets, the kind of exercise the Navy was conducting in the Yellow Sea is critical to our defense against Chinese aggression in the Pacific.  If Beijing has continued harassing American Navy ships in international waters, that’s important to know, and it’s equally important to maintain public criticism of China for doing it.  The AP apparently understands this, but it seems that they’re among the few.

Pictures over New York
Radio Talk Show Hosts
Releasing “torture memos”, but hiding information from these “tortures”.(Sandy Bergers socks are full)
Writing a memo for National Prayer day
Thinking that Swat in Pakistan is just a weekly TV show
Trying to find the phone number of the Taliban leader to invite him for a “beer”, and some hoops.
Reading a book that Chavez gave him
Picking out presents for world leaders

Great coverage, Ed.

they fear such maneuvers are not just dangerous in themselves but could lead to escalated incidents.

Hell, it takes “such maneuvers” in order to survive. Trained skills with “such maneuvers” are what make the US Navy great. You MUST KNOW the oceanography and you MUST have the technology to sense the location of the enemy subs. China’s naval technology has been edging past what Congress has permitted our Navy for years now. Compound THAT with the Chicom products that infiltrate our IT and sabotage our very ability to see, to respond, to survive.

Meanwhile, the US Navy canceled the South Pacific Naval humanitarian supplies mission since a sailor had flu like symptoms.

Hot Air readers may also be interested in an article in the May 09 US Naval Institute Proceedings magazine. The article’s title is “On the Verge of a Game Changer” and discusses recent Chinese development and publications regarding land based anti ship ballistic missiles [ASBM].

… Indeed, the mere perception that China might have an antiship ballistic missile (ASBM) capability could be a game-changer, with profound consequences for deterrence, military operations, and the balance of power in the Western Pacific.

While Chinese ASBM capability remains uncertain, relevant U.S. government sources state consistently that Beijing is pursuing an ASBM based on a variant of the 1,500 km-plus range DF-21/CSS-5 solid propellant medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM). According to the Department of Defense, if supported by “a sophisticated command-and-control system,” e.g., accurate real-time target data, from China’s growing family of terrestrial and space-based sensors, ASBMs could hold U.S. carrier strike groups at risk in the Western Pacific. Further, China’s use of submunitions might render a carrier operationally ineffective without sinking it, thereby achieving its objectives with a (perceived) lower risk of escalation

We will probably give them California so they will just leave us alone… DL13 on May 6, 2009 at 2:23 PM

No, Mexico gets California.

I think the Japanese already have some nukes …….. just like Israel. One troubling thought is that China does have a great imbalance in the sexes due their one child policy. They have some 50 million more men than women. This has to lead to some social problems in China.

Biden really called it when he spoke of other nations testing Obama. Guess he’s not as stupid as he looks. Maybe.

Recently, the Press reported that PM Rudd of Australia was seeking to bolster Aussie naval forces because of his concern as to the reliability of the US as a stabilizing force in SEAsia. Smart move!

The MSM is shameless.

Obama has not only alerted the bullies that he is a sissy, he’s literally acquiesced to letting our Navy serve as target practice.

Sory March, but I first heard that from an old Chief Petty Officer around 1964 and he said that it was old when he was a boot.

This is going to get ugly…

So, where is our local China apologist?

Turtler on May 6, 2009 at 11:25 AM

We have 2 or 3 including myself. Which one were you looking for?

DarkCurrent on May 6, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Yes, China is a potential strategic threat we need to take seriously. On the other hand, if we had Chinese naval ships operating near our shores even in international waters, would/should we not get up close and challenge them? I hope we would.

What is China doing that we wouldn’t/shouldn’t do under similar circumstance?

DarkCurrent on May 6, 2009 at 4:10 PM

DarkCurrent:

Oh, shadowing our ships during exercises in international or sovereign waters, occasionally shooting at us in Int. waters without justification, illegally seizing various ships under our protection, the list goes on.

Oh yes, and I was looking for YiZhangZhe, but no matter, you’ll do just as well.
