Video: Campaign to destroy Miss California escalates; Update: NOM stands by Prejean

posted at 4:10 pm on May 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

If you haven’t seen the “scandalous” new photo yet, feast your eyes. It’s been many moons since I’ve looked at the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue but I remember shots like that being in there even when I was a kid. (Or even sometimes on the cover.) Which is to say, it’s very late in the day culturally to be feigning shock at material like this — and yet NBC, the network that aired photos and video of the Virginia Tech killer glorifying himself, has decided that the pic’s simply too hot for the Peacock to handle. A cynic might wonder if they want viewers to imagine that it’s worse than it is. Good thing I’m not a cynic.

There’s an open question of when the photo was taken — she says it was several years ago, others say it’s more recent — which may be relevant to whether she was a Christian or a pageant contender at the time but doesn’t much matter to her critics. Their goal, using the pretext of “hypocrisy,” is simply to try to make her radioactive within her own political and religious communities by painting her as some sort of fallen woman. It didn’t work with Palin vis-a-vis Bristol’s pregnancy and it won’t work here, but presumably they’re drawing some gratification from the mere thought that they might be causing her discomfort. Pure vindictiveness, but then what did you expect?

Update: Maggie Gallagher from the National Organization of Marriage issues this statement. I told you it wouldn’t work.

Because Carrie honestly said what she believed in answer to a question–marriage is the union of a man and a woman– she is now the subject of ongoing character assassination. The level of hatred directed at her is astonishing. Even more astonishing is her personal courage and strength of character in the midst of these attacks. Of course Carrie is not perfect. On a personal note, as a former unwed mother, I want to say to Americans: you don’t have to be a perfect person to have the right to stand up for marriage. Nothing gay marriage advocates can do can change the fact—we all saw it on national TV—that Carrie is a young woman who surrendered all the glitter Hollywood has to offer, because she would not become the kind of person afraid to say the truth.

Through Carrie, we are also learning, the lengths some people will go to hurt and harass those who speak up for marriage.

Yeah liberals hate beautiful women. I wonder what the political leanings are of the average playboy subscriber?

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 1:19 AM

Playboy? Playboy? The last time Playboy had any relevance Hugh Hefner still had dark hair.

If Playboy subscribers (God, there’s a concept) are liberals, it’s because the only possible way they could see a beautiful woman naked is on paper. I’ve lived in Northern Cal for 35 years, and trust me, any liberal that likes pretty women is ashamed of it, because his wife wouldn’t let him if she knew.

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 1:39 AM

Are you serious? Have you ever been anyplace where there’s a gathering of successful conservatives?

It’s not just that they’re pretty; more important is that they enjoy being female, and don’t drape themselves in the liberal-burkha effect in order to deflect masculine attention.

They actually like being women. That’s beautiful.

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 1:45 AM

Furthermore, Terry, nobody said only conservatives marry beautiful women. My experience tells me that they probably enjoy it more, though.

Would you like some paint for that broad brush? Westboro Baptist Church “stands” for things as well. Shall I lump you in with Westboro Baptist Church members for your views? I believe that the Constitution gives equal rights to all, not a select group only as some love to believe. Where would Slavery, Womens Vote, and Civil Rights be if people didn’t realize that they were wrong about some things?

Hick on May 5, 2009 at 8:55 PM

You know, I was going to respond to this, but since this statement is so jaw-droppingly vapid, I will just post it for the enjoyment of all my conservative friends here on H.A.

Enjoy, my friends, the “logic” of a liberal. It is something to behold.

Joe Pyne on May 6, 2009 at 1:58 AM

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 1:50 AM

How old are you, anyway? Every response is a projection, like “your stereotype of a liberal.”

Whether or not conservative women “put out like liberal women” (charming locution, btw), my experience is that liberal women are at least ambivalent about attracting male attention. They may end up in bed sooner, but it’s rarely worth the trip.

As you continue to ignore, my point is that girls who like being girls are much more rewarding as companions for a man. Women whose primary relationship is with a mirror are to be avoided, and those who check every instinct against the current politically acceptable attitude are an enormous waste of energy.

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 1:59 AM

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 1:59 AM

I don’t think that my age is relevant, but I am 24. As for women; the vast majority that I have come across enjoy being women; and that is regardless of political affliation.

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 2:04 AM

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 2:04 AM

Your age is relevant because you continue to argue like a child, by projecting straw-man arguments onto people who disagree with you.

I’m 40 years older than you, and I would imagine you think guys my age envy you your youth; I know I thought that way when I was your age. That was in 1969, and the boy-girl thing was a lot more fun then than it is now. Try to imagine a world where women weren’t constantly resentful of having been seen as “second-class” citizens their whole lives, and expect you to atone for it somehow.

The truth is, in all kindness, I feel sorry for you, and I don’t mean that condescendingly, either. Trying to be a good man in this swamp of political correctness would give me nightmares. It looks to me like young men are increasingly given a binary choice between metrosexuality and macho idiocy, which is no choice at all. I wouldn’t be young again for all the tea in China. Believe me, it only gets better with experience.

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 2:20 AM

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 2:20 AM

I won’t for one second pretend to be as experienced as you. I don’t think think that women nowadays are man haters. I just think that the playing field is even; as it should be. Girls are still girls and guys are still guys. My generation has been brought up to believe that we are all equals and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

carbon_footprint on May 6, 2009 at 2:28 AM

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 2:27 AM

Surprising as it may seem to you, “your generation” didn’t invent the notion of equality. The difference is in knowing that men and women are different, and vive le difference.

Relations between men and women are, have always been and will always be difficult, and that’s the point. We are profoundly different creatures; that’s why we have so much to learn from each other, and why that’s so necessary.

It seems to me that people your age have been taught primarily that men have traditionally dominated woman, and that women were meek, subservient and smoldering with unexpressed resentment. Not true. I know more tough and feminine women in their 80′s than I’ve ever met in any generation born since the ’60s.

I’ve always known women who were stronger than me (some physically), emotionally as well as intellectually. The difference is that they didn’t feel the need to compete with me constantly, and to try to emasculate my sense of myself.

Being equal doesn’t mean being the same. Nothing has made me feel more like a man than women who enjoy and insist on role separation.

warbaby on May 6, 2009 at 2:41 AM

Warbaby I don’t think that being equal means being the same. Men and women aren’t the same. I do though believe that history has been predominantly sexist. I don’t see how anybody could deny that. I mean women couldn’t vote in the United States of all places until less than a century ago. Women are still discriminated against across the globe.

They don’t belong in the military.

Sorry! But they don’t.

hawkdriver on May 6, 2009 at 2:57 AM

Terry Silver on May 6, 2009 at 2:51 AM

Using terms like “sexist” is relentlessly abstract, and finally doesn’t get us anywhere. It’s also indicative of the leftie indoctrination people your age have been subjected to in the very air you breathe.

The only thing that works, I think, is one person at a time. Enough of that, and you’ll start to see patterns emerge in the actual people you have known.

Everything I believe is based in observation of (often painful) direct experience, and the main thing it’s taught me is to distrust people who use terms ending in “ist,” since that always seems to accompany somebody telling me how to think.

How women are “discriminated against across the globe” doesn’t have much to do with how I have to deal with the next one I meet.

Just a curiosity… she is supposedly 17 in the picture. She had the picture taken for marketing purposes, but now she is not the one marketing it. She is known to be a minor in this picture; at what age does release of such a picture constitute child porn?

That might be a bit of a stretch, but I’d like to think it’s an angle that can shut up the controversy quickly.

As for her crown, I think we have to assume it’s gone. Then again, last year’s crown winner had a similar issue and was forgiven by the Donald himself. The pageant is going to have to grapple with quite a double standard if it removes the California crown from her.

Makes me miss living there. But then I think of the roommates getting oral sex while i’m trying to sleep, the baseball team having parties next door with dumb chicks til 3 in the morning on a monday night, and the other weird kid I had as a roommate who had 500 Gigabytes of pornography on his harddrives.

I think that what Ms. Prejean needs is perhaps a heart transplant rather than the breast implant that she had paid for by the pageant.

At this point, I would not be surprised if she gives up her Miss California crown. She found out who those people at the pageants really are. And I would not be surprised if she chose to end her modeling career right then and there, in search of better things.

I’m sure that, as we write and speak, there’s a Christian man, a very wealthy one, who’s looking at her picture or her face on TV and saying to his buddy, “You know that gal? I’m going to marry her!

“Bigot” has been so misused.

Kids don’t even know its meaning beyond “bad”.

Certain segments of the population jump on the “burn the bigot” bandwagon as bigots preparing the bonfire for victims.

Women were the last segment of the adult population to be granted the vote based upon true bigotry that thrives now under the guise of “multiculturalism” that today segregates America into a PC prejudiced society of “special” class distinctions. Conservative women are below everyone, meant to not be seen and not be heard.

Show me a chaste liberal woman and I will show you one ugly bitch.

Just about every female movie star. Ever.

She likely won’t get any support from the womens groups since they are mostly left wing lesbians.

The mindset of your average HotAir reader.

until the GOP has leaders who will say what we’re saying now, i.e., “The Media is attempting to destroy private citizen or a member of our party. We recognize that they are doing this and challenge them to stop because we will fight back by pointing out the bias and intertwining of the left and the media. etc.” the GOP will have to behave like they’re the strange ones. Defend yourself, defend the base, defend your allies. Or perish.

Good grief now topless photos of “the” gay marriage opponent have surfaced. Everyone has to see these photos.

Can anybody name a really smokin’ hot liberal chick? The last one I can remember was Jammie Curtis. Now she has grey hair and can’t take a crap without eating some sort of yogurt stuff.

There are some around, if you are just talking about physical beauty. I am, by no means, in agreement that the left does not have women on their side that are physically beautiful. It is their leftist ideals that tend to add a pantina of ugliness to them. I would rather date a cute woman that possesses inner beauty, than the most physically gorgeous woman that is filled with hate and bitterness.

Sometimes, though, you get a convergence of inner beauty and physical beauty, where the two are catalysts for each other, resulting in a truly stunning woman. When that happens, the long knives of the left are unsheathed, and the true ugliness of their ideals comes through. What the left does not understand, is that the attractiveness of people like Palin or Prejean is just a bonus…what conservatives find attractive is the ideals they espouse. Thatcher was by no means a raging beauty, physically, but the beauty of her ideals shone like a beacon in the night.

Partisan hacks talk about beauty on internet blogs is pretty pathetic in general.

You should know. The standard definition of “hack” is “see Nonfactor.”
