Video: Campaign to destroy Miss California escalates; Update: NOM stands by Prejean
posted at 4:10 pm on May 5, 2009 by Allahpundit
If you haven’t seen the “scandalous” new photo yet, feast your eyes. It’s been many moons since I’ve looked at the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue but I remember shots like that being in there even when I was a kid. (Or even sometimes on the cover.) Which is to say, it’s very late in the day culturally to be feigning shock at material like this — and yet NBC, the network that aired photos and video of the Virginia Tech killer glorifying himself, has decided that the pic’s simply too hot for the Peacock to handle. A cynic might wonder if they want viewers to imagine that it’s worse than it is. Good thing I’m not a cynic.
There’s an open question of when the photo was taken — she says it was several years ago, others say it’s more recent — which may be relevant to whether she was a Christian or a pageant contender at the time but doesn’t much matter to her critics. Their goal, using the pretext of “hypocrisy,” is simply to try to make her radioactive within her own political and religious communities by painting her as some sort of fallen woman. It didn’t work with Palin vis-a-vis Bristol’s pregnancy and it won’t work here, but presumably they’re drawing some gratification from the mere thought that they might be causing her discomfort. Pure vindictiveness, but then what did you expect?

Update: Maggie Gallagher from the National Organization of Marriage issues this statement. I told you it wouldn’t work.
Because Carrie honestly said what she believed in answer to a question–marriage is the union of a man and a woman– she is now the subject of ongoing character assassination. The level of hatred directed at her is astonishing. Even more astonishing is her personal courage and strength of character in the midst of these attacks. Of course Carrie is not perfect. On a personal note, as a former unwed mother, I want to say to Americans: you don’t have to be a perfect person to have the right to stand up for marriage. Nothing gay marriage advocates can do can change the fact—we all saw it on national TV—that Carrie is a young woman who surrendered all the glitter Hollywood has to offer, because she would not become the kind of person afraid to say the truth.
Through Carrie, we are also learning, the lengths some people will go to hurt and harass those who speak up for marriage.

I’ve decided that it’s irrelevant. Marry everyone. *haha
Remove divorce from the courts. Just have judges be a rubberstamp. Gotta go to mediation.
Then let everyone show up and duke it out. :)

Government, my keester! In both California and Iowa the people decided that marriage was between a man and a woman. Their courts said it was unConstitutional. It took an amendment to force their peoples will on California. Iowa has to wait until 2012 to do the same.
And this whole muck about their freaking civil rights being violated. Bunk! They can get married just like everyone else as long as they follow the same rules and restrictions as everyone else. Even men and women have to follow certain rules to get married (i.e. age; relationship, competentcy; etc).
vapig on May 5, 2009 at 8:48 PM
My point would be, well, the government had too much power to intervene on that one…

OOOOhhhh…cheap date…
ladyingray on May 5, 2009 at 8:51 PM
Well, vapig, the conflict is obviously about individual rights.
Even though people voted, they also vote on quite a few issues which later turn out to be unconstitutional. (I’m not suggesting this is such a case.) The point is that direct democracy isn’t always the wisest course.
I really don’t think this change would be that upsetting even to a large number of conservatives. Doesn’t everyone have someone in their family who is now out of the closet? The funniest example of how this issue gets silly is a Thanksgiving I spent with a family. The longest-together couple? The gay guys.
So it’s not about stability, necessarily. Then what’s the issue?
Anyway, I’m not sure direct voting is the right path.
I still think Ms. CA. did nothing wrong. She’s entitled to her opinion.
AnninCA on May 5, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Am I missing something here?? She looks great here….she isn’t naked….what’s the problem?? And typical of the pro gay media to somehow think people will think less of Ms. Prejean because of this picture….
Albertanator on May 5, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Indeed. I’m a lightweight. Ah well.
blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 8:54 PM
Would you like some paint for that broad brush? Westboro Baptist Church “stands” for things as well. Shall I lump you in with Westboro Baptist Church members for your views? I believe that the Constitution gives equal rights to all, not a select group only as some love to believe. Where would Slavery, Womens Vote, and Civil Rights be if people didn’t realize that they were wrong about some things?

blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 9:13 PM
The goal of the Left is to harass and intimidate, by any and every means possible, everyone who disagrees with them until their opposition is silenced and living in fear.
There are no morals, ethics, or values being served by this attack. instead, the leftists derive a sadistic pleasure from this. They satisfy their hunger for power. It is for this that the Left is fighting.
And so, the Left celebrates another orgy of their sadistic lust for pleasure and power.

These attacks do influence people. Terrorists use terrorist tactics because they work. The goal is to spread fear of attack for dissenting.
Not everyone has a strong and independent character. Not everyone has the physical or financial means or support group needed to withstand such attacks. Thus, they willingly silence themselves. Some need to belong to the in crowd. But others need to get good grades or keep their jobs to feed their families, and are unwilling to risk being similarly targeted for expressing dissenting views.

blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 9:52 PM
Leftists attack dissenters in order to terrorize all who observe the attack into silence. It’s a tactic used to keep their members in line and to intimidate opponents into silence and submission.

According to the left, religious Christians are backwards, repressed, small minded, and superstitious. And the ones who aren’t all these things are HYPOCRITES.
I really wish some prominent spokesperson for the Religious Right would come out swinging against the media/academia/entertainment industry/Democrat party cabal who have been demonizing these good people for decades, and really set the record straight.
The Religious Right didn’t come together in the 1950′s to protest the publication of Playboy. Nor did it come together in the 1960′s to protest The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It came together in the mid-1970′s after watching our popular culture get more and more decadent. It’s message was “this has gone far enough, let’s pull back a little bit”.
You can listen to rock music, wear a mini skirt, grow your hair long, smoke some grass, and still have respect for traditional values and old time religion. That’s the message they’ve been preaching to the masses. And though I’m neither religious nor a Christian, I will defend these people against any swine who goes after them.

blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Carrie, she’s definitely gifted with beauty. I also support her 100% on her right to speak out.
On a personal level?
Just looking at her younger pictures, it really upsets me that she didn’t really know just how perfect she was. I hate all this pressure to have bigger breasts, to serve some outside idea of beauty rather than trust yourself.
The fact that such a beautiful young woman didn’t feel good enough says a lot to me about our society.
Men are simply not really getting through to these young women just how desirable they are.
This travesty lands on men’s shoulders. What’s wrong with you guys, anyway?

ladyingray on May 5, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Yeah that was my first thought as well, something along the lines of, “and she needed implants why….?”
Its a shame, but theres so much blame to go around its almost futile discussing it. Guys my age dont know how to be men (i mean, look how Blatant cant handle his booze…i mean cmon!), girls dont know how to get respect seeing as staying over is the new goodnight kiss, parents don’t instill any sense of value or discipline in their kids, media hypersexualizes everything…its just all too much.
ernesto on May 5, 2009 at 10:28 PM
How long will it be before the far left crazies define “marriage” as the union between man and sheep, woman and horse, or man and 10-year old girl? The girl believes what 75% of the population believes yet she should be hung by her toes in the public square?

ladyingray on May 5, 2009 at 10:30 PM
What a shame…though i suppose in my story lies hope for those who find themselves on opposite ends of the political spectrum: spar enough with keen minds and you’re liable to craft a worthwhile view on things. though at this point ill often throw out a contrarian statement for the hell of it, just because it gets kind of echo chambery here sometimes.
I propose interstate “foreign exchange”. Im sure Blatant and some of us other new yorkers could learn a thing or 2 from some time in TN or thereabout. I keep hearing so much bout these country girls…

Ask yourself: would you rather spend an evening with Miss Prejean or with her detractors? Of course, you would love to spend an evening with Miss Prejean. She is a lovely, good person. Her detractors, on the other hand, are ugly, awful people.
As for the “semi-nude” picture of Miss Prejean, there are racier photos in the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. And don’t deny it: she looks lovely in that “semi-nude” picture.
So it is time in this thread to state the self-evident truth that Carrie Prejean is a beautiful young woman. An honorable man protects such a beautiful young woman.
