The obligatory “Michael Savage banned from Britain” post

When I first saw the story this morning, I thought they’d turned him away at the gate at Heathrow like they did to Geert Wilders. Nope: He never tried to travel there. Evidently the British government simply cooked up a list of notorious figures abroad whom they have a problem with and put it out as a heads up to them not to come knocking. Simply bizarre, and needless to say, a blockbuster publicity coup for Savage. Good work, Gordon Brown.

“I think it’s important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it’s a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won’t be welcome in this country,” [Home Secretary Jacqui] Smith told GMTV.

“Coming to this country is a privilege. If you can’t live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what’s more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded…

“[Savage] is someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country,” Ms Smith told BBC Breakfast.

Also on the list: Jihadists, neo-Nazis, that child-killing savage from Hezbollah for whom Al Jazeera threw a birthday party last year, and, oh yeah, Fred Phelps. I’ve never listened to Savage so I’ll rely on our commenters to judge, but as intense as his invective may be, is he really in this category? Is Phelps, for that matter? Fomenting “hatred” isn’t the same as fomenting violence — which would be reasonable grounds for exclusion — unless the Brits are afraid that violence might be directed at, not by, Savage or Phelps. That was their reasoning in excluding Wilders, after all: They didn’t fear that he’d incite an anti-Muslim riot, they feared he’d incite an anti-Wilders riot by Muslims. Maybe that’s their thinking with Savage too, in which case they’re basically admitting that the country’s no longer safe for certain viewpoints — Islamic fundamentalism not included.

Anyway, one publicity-stirring lawsuit, coming up:

Savage told The Chronicle that being included in such a crowd is no laughing matter — and he is now preparing legal action against Smith, he said.

“This lunatic … is linking me up with Nazi skinheads who are killing people in Russia, she’s putting me in a league with Hamas murderers who kill Jews on busses,” he said. “I have never advocated violence … I’ve been on the air 15 years. My views may be inflammatory, but they’re not violent in any way.”

He said he has been defamed and endangered by the British government action. “She has painted a target on my back, linking me with people who are in prison for killing people,” he said. “Does she not think people might hunt me down?”

Savage said he has had no contact with the British government or with Smith’s office and has no idea how he ended up on the British Home secretary’s list.

Good point: His profile’s much higher now among violent nuts abroad than it was yesterday. Exit question: What’s really going on here? Why strain so mightily to make an example of him? Did they add him to the list simply as convenient political cover, to prove to British Muslims that famous “Islamophobes” aren’t welcome in the UK either?

Yep, I usually try to at least listen to his introduction because it gets my blood up!

He has also been obsessed with a song by The Kinks called Living on a Thin Line. The lyrics are as follows:

All the stories have been told
Of kings and days of old,
But there’s no England now.
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don’t seem to matter very much anymore.
All the lies we were told,
All the lies of the people running round,
They’re castles have burned.
Now I see change,
But inside we’re the same as we ever were.

blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 10:34 PM

I don’t know anything about Savage but I do know that the British government is run by Trotskyists (i.e. Communist-lite) so nothing the higher-ups do surprises me.

I don’t blame the Brits for their government anyone than I blame the Poles for having lived under Communism. Yes, it’s that bad in my opinion.

The illusion of modern democracy has the pernicious side-effect of making it seem that people (the British in this case) somehow deserve all the toxic crap their government dumps on them.

Good luck to Mr. Savage. I hope he wins his lawsuit.

commodore on May 5, 2009 at 10:37 PM

I guess I like him even more. Under Brown’s leadership, the UK has turned into a 3rd world political battle, and he will be gone within a year and hopefully David Cameron has enough sense, and I think he does, to right some of the wrong that the labor party has done to our British brothers and sisters. As for Ms. Smith, I am surprised that Savage is only big name on there. There is a lot of people that should be on that list and are not, Osama Bin Laden

ConservativePartyNow on May 5, 2009 at 10:38 PM

I go through phases with Savage. There are times he sounds just as bitter and vindictive as the left wing loons but then there are times his bluntness and brilliance really shine. I guess I am a fan of his show but not necessarily the man. He is fiercely consistant with his opinion and also rarely repeats himself on his show (ala Sean Hannity and his talking points).

No, he is not worthy to be on that list. The British officials are complete idiots, especially when George Galloway is a member of their own parliament. Yet when Canada banned that nut, I was still against it. America truly is the only free country out there.

Well that caps it for me. I was sitting the fence on Dr. Savage. He does get a little annoying, but when you choose to make a radio personality a public enemy of the U.K., where do I contribute to his defamation lawsuit fund?

Dr. Savage, thank you for standing up for our military and for our founding principles. None of these nitwits like doubleplusundead (whatever the hell that stands for)have the stones you do. They are liberal eunuchs with their nuts in a jar. You are correct, liberalism is a disease!

CattyConservative on May 5, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Savage has his moments, but I don’t listen much, unless I happen to be in the car when his show is on, but he definitely doesn’t deserve to be on this list.

I never warmed up to Savage because my local station bumped Phil Hendrie to air his program. Hendrie had a great, funny show (even though I disagree with many of his views) that wasn’t over-the-top political. Ahhh, those were the days, before the left went bonkers…

As much as I dislike the Air America twats, I wouldn’t want to see them on any kind of list like this either.

On my drive home from work, I have three stations with talk shows I listen to, two local and the Savage Nation. I switch back and forth depending on the topic and my mood for the day. He is right on a lot of things, but some days I can’t take the screaming and self importance. He is to be commended for his support of the Haditha marines and his love for this country, which I share.

From Ms. Smith “Coming to this country is a privilege. If you can’t live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what’s more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded…

Now that sounds like something Savage would say about America..

…except this is nothing new. Britain has been targeting viewpoints for a while. They are not a free nation, nor have they been one for quite a while. Citizens have no right to bear firearms, nor a right to privacy. They are subject to the whims of legislation to outlaw speech against homosexuals, against religion, so much so that comedians are the primary people defending free speech.

Well said, aengus! This is a pure form of government censorship, in an attempt to silence the views of someone with whom it disagrees. Although I understand that British law does not have an analogue to the First Amendment here in the U.S., it is very disheartening to see a country that has been one of our staunchest historical allies veer so much leftward in its behavior.

This kind of action may herald the era of Big Brother in Great Britain. Please, someone in charge over there in the U.K., WAKE UP!!! Are you or are you not a free society!?!?! You are jeopardizing the freedom of your citizens – do you not understand this? What is next on this slippery slope?

OneVision on May 6, 2009 at 12:18 AM

For the generation of my parents the word ‘London’ is synonymous with hope and freedom. When my country was occupied by the national-socialists the BBC offered a daily glimpse of hope, in the darkness of Nazi tyranny. Millions of my country men listened to it, illegally. The words ‘This Is London’ were a symbol for a better world coming soon. If only the British and Canadian and American soldiers were here.

What will be transmitted forty years from now? Will it still be ‘This Is London’? Or will it be ‘this is Londonistan’? Will it bring us hope, or will it signal the values of Mecca and Medina? Will Britain offer submission or perseverance? Freedom or slavery?

The choice is ours.

Ladies and gentlemen, I suggest to defend freedom in general and freedom of speech in particular.

I propose the withdrawal of all hate speech legislation in Europe. I propose a European First Amendment.

In Europe we should defend freedom of speech like you Americans do. In Europe freedom of speech should be extended, instead of restricted. Of course, calling for violence or unjustly yelling “fire” in a crowded theater have to be punished, but the right to criticize ideologies or religions are necessary conditions for a vital democracy. As George Orwell once said: “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.

Let us defend freedom of speech and let us gain strength and work hard to become even stronger. Millions think just like you and me. Millions think liberty is precious. That democracy is better than Shariah. And after all, why should we be afraid? Our many freedoms and our prosperity are the result of centuries of endeavor. Centuries of hard work and sacrifice. We do not stand alone.

Ladies and gentlemen, our enemies should know: we will never apologize for being free men, we will never give in. We will never surrender. There is no stronger power than the force of free men fighting for the great cause of liberty. Because freedom is the birthright of all man. Freedom must prevail, and freedom will prevail.
- Geert Wilders

Oh. My. God.

Excerpt:

Mr Savage has said that Muslims “need deportation” and would do well to “take your religion and shove it up your behind” because “I’m sick of you”.

Ugly on May 6, 2009 at 12:26 AM

How could anyone say that about such a kind, enlightened religion of peace? Maybe he was just in a bad mood.

MB4 on May 6, 2009 at 12:31 AM

MB4 on May 6, 2009 at 12:31 AM

But you know that I was reacting to the way he was taken out of context. Context is EVERYTHING.

Actually I rather liked the more than ring of truth to what he said, context or not.

Yes. well…

This is my fav Savage clip… He does a Call to Arms with the music of Dixie playing in the background.

Jacqui Smith is their Janet Napolitardo.
I think they put Savage on the list because some bureaucrat noticed that “there are an awful lot of Muslims here, let’s put in some right-wing personalities to make sure we aren’t offensive to Islam.”
They got the name from some US pol. I can’t believe there aren’t right wingers in the UK too – what about Prince Philip?

Jacqui is an idiot and so are the Brits for voting fools like this into office.

The local talk station here dropped him for Dave Ramsey. He used to follow Hannity. Once in a while I would get busy and not turn off the radio and turn on foxnews at the 6 pm slot. All I can remember from his show is “borders, language, culture”.

Hard to argue with that as a bedrock principle. However he was a bit much to make him part of my daily listening list. Ramsey is interesting but once one has figured out his system, put it in play, gets debt free, than that gets boring, too. However, Ramsey has said he puts his new savings in index funds until he accumulates enough cash to buy another rental property. Interesting strategy in this market. I am not a frequent enough listening of his show to know if that is still his cash accumulation strategy.

I haven’t heard Savage since they took his show off locally and I haven’t bothered to try to find him on the dial or on the net. I wonder if Soros has a long reach and somehow influences the twit in Britain who approved this list. I know, tin foil time. But I put nothing past him.

However, Michael Savage, if you are reading this, you aren’t missing anything. The food is really bad over there. I spent a week at the Grovesner Square Marriott (apologies for the spelling) and nearly starved to death. I have no idea what they make up their breakfast meat from but man, their sausage and bacon were absolutely gagworthy. Pizza Hut was just as bad, since they used the same kind of meats on the pizza. As I said, I nearly starved to death.

Please take good care of yourself. If you have difficulties, may you find strength and a path through them. If you have opportunities, may you find the right path to success. If you have sorrows, may you find comfort.

I don’t know if the point has been made on this thread, but Britain is a cultural leader in Europe. Expect to see this snowball. France, Sweden, and others are close behind.

Today, we are all Savages.

Johnson on May 6, 2009 at 3:03 AM

I don’t hate Savage, but I’m not a fan anymore. At some point, several years back, I became convinced that he was a phony, a Leftist at heart who adopted an almost parodically shrill conservative tone in order to sell a radio show.

I think that if Savage had emerged a few years later, he’d be an Air America type.

Kensington on May 6, 2009 at 3:11 AM

You Savage bashers need to lighten up. The left in America try to paint Michelle as a an evil person, and in a few years she’ll be the next one banned from traveling.

V-rod on May 6, 2009 at 3:16 AM

i banned him on DrunkReport.com a long time ago…

dude is fun and maybe well meaning but…. yikes…

Drunk Report on May 5, 2009 at 9:31 PM

And yet Savage would gladly support your site, if you needed support.

Whatever, man. I had your site bookmarked.

This kind of statement pisses me off. It makes no sense at all. A few years later? I’m sure Air America would love to have him, BTW.

Ugly on May 6, 2009 at 4:25 AM

Oh yes: Persona non grata.

Ugly on May 6, 2009 at 4:26 AM

I’ve never listened to Savage so I’ll rely on our commenters to judge, but as intense as his invective may be, is he really in this category?

1. Of course not.

2. If they can ban him, just think how easily they can ban you based on your moniker allahpundit, and your old blog.

3. Savage said he thought that it might be linked to his joining in a suit with the Thomas Moore Legal Center against the DHS report labeling conservatives an veterans nuts.

4. Checking his wiki page, they attack him for emails that they acknowledge that he didn’t send to Brian Lamb. It’s that crazy in in leftard land.

5. It’s fascinating in a sick way that the leftards are the very same people that they warned us about.

Blake on May 6, 2009 at 4:34 AM

Making the list was well is Mike Guzofsky, a leader of the ultra-nationalist Kahane movement, which seeks to ensure that Israel retains biblically-rich territories, such as the West Bank and Jerusalem. A BBC profile falsely claims Guzofsky is “actively involved with military training camps.” The only camps Guzofsky currently runs are to train dogs to protect Jewish communities in the West Bank. Dogs trained at Guzofky’s northern West Bank kennels recently prevented several terrorist attacks. Guzofsky previously was involved in leading workshops to teach self-defense to Jews. He has also pushed for Jews in the West Bank to cede from Israel and create their own state in the event the Israeli government seeks to evacuate that territory in a deal with the Palestinians.

According to your reasoning, AP, what’s the point in banning this guy who’s completely unknown to British muzzies? Or is he in there to fill an arbitrary “Jew spot”?

Aristotle on May 6, 2009 at 4:39 AM

You people who are repeating the meme that Savage is really a lefty, sound like crazy leftys yourself. Stop it. It’s idiotic.

Blake on May 6, 2009 at 4:46 AM

Savage is hardcore conservative on social issues, but on the economy, he’s shaky. He’s expressed support for high tariffs, protectionism, and “buy American” policies. He actually agrees with liberals that Bush was a deregulator (NOT) and he shares their disdain for Wall Street. He’s no big fan of NAFTA either.

From daily mail some that are allowed to stay in Britian

AND THESE ARE SOME ALLOWED TO STAY IN THE UK:
Abu Quatada

Osama Bin Laden’s top man in the UK. He is in jail fighting an attempt to extradite him to Jordan on terrorism charges.

Learco Chindamo

The 28-year-old, who killed headmaster Stephen Lawrence in 1995, is free to stay in the UK after lawyers claimed that deportation to Italy would ‘breach his right to a family life’.

Ahsan Sabri

A Pakistani illegal immigrant who killed a young writer by driving into her at 60mph, he cannot be deported due to his human right to a family life. Sabri, who had been driving uninsured and unlicenced had married a British woman.

Caliph Ali Asmar
Iraqui Kurd asylum seeker jailed for two years for unlawful wounding. After serving eight months he was released and went on to rape a woman and stab a love rival. He is now in jail indefinitely.

Gary Glitter
Real name Paul Gadd, he served almost three years in prison in Vietnam for sex crimes involving two young girls. The former pop star, who returned to the UK in August, also served two months in jail in 1999 for possessing child pornography.

Dr Philip Nitschke
The euthanasia activist was dubbed ‘Dr Death’ after bringing the first of his suicide workshops to the UK today. Nitschke has helped four people die in his native Australia, but in the UK assisted suicide is illegal with a maximum punishment of 14 years in prison.

That Green Room dealio has really gone to your head, MadCon.

As if Cap’n wishy-wash ‘imself has any room to criticize the conservatism of others. Savage is a gun grabber? That’s news to me. We already have someone post a clip of Michael Savage making the suggestion you arm yourself. Quite frankly you’ve bought a load of misinformation about Savage.

The man is intense, but he’s intense about all the right things. We can’t be a real movement relying solely on gutless moderates who refuse to find a hill they will die on and instead suggest we must accede, concede, recede, anything but stand on principle against the gates of hell.

There are so many better alternatives for people to listen to that I always turn off the savage assclown.

He is passionate about the right things in stupid ways.

Right_of_Attila on May 6, 2009 at 6:33 AM

To answer your exit question, they really do believe he is as much of a threat as the terrorists. This is because if they didn’t, they would have to give up their relativist beliefs, and their secret beliefs that Britain is the source of all the evil in the world.

I would compare it to what Sartre calls ‘bad faith’, which is when you believe something that is necessary for your sense of identity whilst also believing (knowing) it to be false.

The commenter who compared the UK to Poland under the communists is spot on. It is incredible how far the government is from the views of the people, and how little we can do about it. The whole political establishment is off in fairy-land, Brussels, while the neo-Soviet EUSSR continues its slow motion coup d’etat.

There is no hope.

I haven’t listened to him much, but the few times I have, it seems he’s spent a relatively large amount of time talking about what he’s eaten lately…really inflammatory…not…
