The obligatory “Michael Savage banned from Britain” post

When I first saw the story this morning, I thought they’d turned him away at the gate at Heathrow like they did to Geert Wilders. Nope: He never tried to travel there. Evidently the British government simply cooked up a list of notorious figures abroad whom they have a problem with and put it out as a heads up to them not to come knocking. Simply bizarre, and needless to say, a blockbuster publicity coup for Savage. Good work, Gordon Brown.

“I think it’s important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it’s a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won’t be welcome in this country,” [Home Secretary Jacqui] Smith told GMTV.

“Coming to this country is a privilege. If you can’t live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what’s more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded…

“[Savage] is someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country,” Ms Smith told BBC Breakfast.

Also on the list: Jihadists, neo-Nazis, that child-killing savage from Hezbollah for whom Al Jazeera threw a birthday party last year, and, oh yeah, Fred Phelps. I’ve never listened to Savage so I’ll rely on our commenters to judge, but as intense as his invective may be, is he really in this category? Is Phelps, for that matter? Fomenting “hatred” isn’t the same as fomenting violence — which would be reasonable grounds for exclusion — unless the Brits are afraid that violence might be directed at, not by, Savage or Phelps. That was their reasoning in excluding Wilders, after all: They didn’t fear that he’d incite an anti-Muslim riot, they feared he’d incite an anti-Wilders riot by Muslims. Maybe that’s their thinking with Savage too, in which case they’re basically admitting that the country’s no longer safe for certain viewpoints — Islamic fundamentalism not included.

Anyway, one publicity-stirring lawsuit, coming up:

Savage told The Chronicle that being included in such a crowd is no laughing matter — and he is now preparing legal action against Smith, he said.

“This lunatic … is linking me up with Nazi skinheads who are killing people in Russia, she’s putting me in a league with Hamas murderers who kill Jews on busses,” he said. “I have never advocated violence … I’ve been on the air 15 years. My views may be inflammatory, but they’re not violent in any way.”

He said he has been defamed and endangered by the British government action. “She has painted a target on my back, linking me with people who are in prison for killing people,” he said. “Does she not think people might hunt me down?”

Savage said he has had no contact with the British government or with Smith’s office and has no idea how he ended up on the British Home secretary’s list.

Good point: His profile’s much higher now among violent nuts abroad than it was yesterday. Exit question: What’s really going on here? Why strain so mightily to make an example of him? Did they add him to the list simply as convenient political cover, to prove to British Muslims that famous “Islamophobes” aren’t welcome in the UK either?

It appears Gordon Brown and Obama are reading from the same notes and coordinating their enemies list.

Savage is intense but he’s always got something different from everyone else.

If she thinks he’s full of hate speech she might want to head over to the local Mosque in Londonstan.

I’m listening to his show now and I agree with him on two points: they were told to put his name on the list by someone on this side of the pond, and he was the first easiest target. Not exactly who they wanted on the list, but the easiest first target.

Marcus on May 5, 2009 at 9:37 PM

Screw Savage and screw England.

darii on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Savage is pretty intense. I used to listen to him occasionally until the local station which carried him changed their format; I don’t remember inciting violence against anyone, but he can be pretty nasty. Easier to take in small doses…

changer1701 on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

If you can’t live by the rules that we live by…..

What exact rule did he violate? Of course in the UK there are so many moronic laws governing just about every aspect of their life, who can keep up with all of them. Look close folks: this is one of the countries The ‘O’ wants to emulate.

Tommy_G on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Suing the British government. Yeah, good luck with that, jacka ss.

Dave Rywall on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Although Savage can be so incredibly off base when it comes to certain things, I listen to him occasionally and turn him off when he goes on some incoherent, anti-capitalist rant. He spends a lot of time talking about bad food and meatballs. He calls Obama “MaoBama” and eviscerated that turd-burglar Perez Hilton. He wondered how a gay man could judge the beauty of a woman. However, to lump him in with Neo-Nazis and terrorists is ridiculous.

V15J on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Savage is a putz.

Mike Honcho on May 5, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Congrats Dr. S!
Give ‘em heckfire!

KarlF on May 5, 2009 at 9:39 PM

He’s talking about it now, of course this woman has never listened to nor read any of his books. Me thinks this is being done as a favor to the One, can’t believe Limbaugh isn’t on it either.

Exit question: Why is it that stories that conservatives are concerned about are “obligatory” and ones like Chris Matthews making fun of a conservative isn’t?

broker1 on May 5, 2009 at 9:39 PM

I’ve never listened to Savage so I’ll rely on our commenters to judge, but as intense as his invective may be, is he really in this category?

I’ve heard very little of him. He is the type that strings along an idea that starts rational then he hit’s a cliff and just jumps right off and you’re left thinking… what the ???

You sort of get what he was going for, you think ok he’s embellishing for effect, but you still think he’s probably a nut.

So no. He’s not in that category.

Dash on May 5, 2009 at 9:41 PM

I appreciate Michael Savage because he is always true to his beliefs. He has been right about the problems illegals bring for years and years and years. He doesn’t tow the party line either. Love it!

That’s okay. Our own government is gearing up hearings that most likely will result in Limbaugh, Hannity, Boortz, Savage, and the rest having their shows dropped by stations all over America.

Say what you like about Savage, but we are but a half step behind the U.K.

SAVAGES HATERS DON’T LISTEN TO HIM

blatantblue on May 5, 2009 at 9:45 PM

“but as intense as his invective may be, is he really in this category?”

Nobody should be in that category, unless there is evidence they are a direct threat to Britain. So, their inclusion of jihadists makes sense, but Savage & Phelps? They both insanely vociferous, in a nutty sort of way, but I seriously doubt they are a national security threat. Your theory about scoring points with British Muslims must be right.

KS Rex on May 5, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Everyone can bash Savage, but he was the only major radio host who stood up for Colonel Chessani, and got funds going for his legal defense!!!!!

At this rate, “Banned in Britain” is going to start appearing on book covers and in other media like “Banned in Boston” used to – a guarantee of hot, hot hijinks that momma doesn’t want to you to read. Since every rightthinkng leftwing momma is now copastetic with grade school kids learning every form of human plumbing, for their own good, it’ll have to be incorrect political and philosophical views that kids sneak under the covers with a flashlight.

Maybe. Even if not quite so, the up-and-coming generation may find surprising ways to differentiate itself from its elder Obamatrons.

I also listened to him a little when stuck in traffic, and found him primarily too wrapped up in himself and his ratings…and I suspect that is why he was always cheap-shotting Rush (Hush Bimbah), Hannity, O’Reilly, etc. Now it’s all Roger Hedgecock on the afternoon drive home.

Mr. Savage is not my cup of tea. (Pun intended) But this seems more than a little rude of Mr. Brown. I think it would be safe to say that if Mr. Savage had visited no one would have been the wiser. PC run amok.

I think we should sneak Snoop Dog into the country through France (that’ll sting) use that thing they have – that tube through the channel. And when he gets to the other side there should be Press waiting, and he should say only one thing “I’m an American, I’ll go where ever I want Beatches.” Or whatever Snoop Dog says, when he punks bureaucratic Clowns.

France and England better get a hold of their Muslim populations or they are going to be in a world of hurt. There are areas of London now that you have to avoid. When we were in Paris in ‘05 the Muslim youth were rioting and setting stuff on fire. I would hate to see our country go that way. The majority of Munich are non-German Turkish immigrants. Europe is being swallowed up.

TXMomof3 on May 5, 2009 at 9:57 PM

It’s par for the course with this politically correct bunch of dhimmi trough-feeders that is NuLabour. Don’t worry, Savage will have a job long after this shower of crap government in the UK will. I’ve listened to Michael Savage often in the past (preempted by Mark Levin now) and I will say that he is a) very intelligent b) very entertaining c) not worthy of such a list.
Michael has put his money where his mouth is many times. He raises money for the military when they are put on trail and he is a proponent of free speech.
If it come to choosing between Obama/Britain and MS, I will choose MS without any pause.

carbon_footprint on May 5, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Savage is annoying but he in no way deserves to be on this list. Nevertheless, millions of people who never heard of him will now check him out. I think Savage should give 10 percent of his income to the UK Inland Revenue for all the free advertising. What tossers!

It smells like this was done for political cover.

BadgerHawk on May 5, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Thank you for posting this Hot Air.

Dr Savage is a wonderful person and a great talk show host.

He supports free speech unlike the British government.

FontanaConservative on May 5, 2009 at 10:07 PM

The answer to your question is yes.

Jim-Rose on May 5, 2009 at 10:07 PM

Michael Savage has his faults, to be sure, but so does everybody else.

He is very passionate, direct and almost never minces words, and that makes a lot of people uncomfortable in these wussified days.

Unlike many so-called “conservatives,” Savage never once sold out to the socialist George W. Bush.

For that alone he has my eternal respect.

He stood up for the Haditha Marines from the start, when many so-called “conservatives” seemed to have nothing to say, and went after the Islamist fascists organization that refers to itself as C.A.I.R.

He also has the vision to see trends developing that most among us do not. As such, he understands that we are perilously close to losing this thing we call America, and he fully understands what a hell-hole a “post-American” world would be like.

Perfect he isn’t, but I am not willing to discount everything he says because I may disagree on some of his points.

Yes, I have. He tends to go after lawbreakers and not be frightened of ethnicity or color. Like the article he has posted on his website tonight near the bottom of the 23 year old guy who argues with his girlfriend, took her 3-month old infant into his car and drove along the interstate and tossed the baby to it’s death out the window. “You gotta do what you gotta do” I think he’s quotes as having said to the police. I haven’t seen any other national coverage of the story, probably for good reason.

He does good work as well. He has raised money for the legal expenses of the Haditha Marines. He has really taken up Lt. Col. Chessani’s case with the Thomas More Law Center.

Good news! The government will not seek to appeal the ruling in Lt. Col. Chessani’s case that dropped all charges against him. Score one for Savage. He personally donated tens of thousands of dollars without ever meeting Lt. Col. Chessani.

nice343 on May 5, 2009 at 10:19 PM

I’m a big fan of Michael Savage. Started listening in ‘05, because he was the only conservative intellectually honest enough to criticize Bush. He also praised Bush when Bush was right. He had Chuckie Schumer as a guest when they agreed about Bush’s loathsome UAE Ports deal. He had Ralph Nader as a guest to let Nader talk about his book, The Seventeen Traditions. Never a fan of Nader, I listened intently, and gained insights into the man I’d never gain otherwise. One thing about Savage, he never ambushes his guests.

I enjoy the anger and hyperbole. Traditional Americans should be angry, though it can be a strain. Most people are numb from the outrages and close themselves off in their own bubbles. I don’t blame them, but it won’t be possible much longer.

Savage endures the disadvantages of personality; he’s an angry pessimist in a happy-face nation, optimistically headed over a cliff. His insights seem psychic at times and Cassandras are not popular. One year ago, he said that if you think Bush is done with this country, you are mistaken. Then came September and the financial crisis. I saw those crazed lunatics pour out of Congress and thought “oh, my God”; that imbecile in the White House will sign anything. His Democrat Treasury Secretary recommended, the lunatic Congress attached pork, and Bush signed it. McCain approved and the Obama train started before Obama was elected.

England is controlled by suicidal psychotic hags (male and female). Savage plays There’s No England Anymore by The Kinks. It is tearfully appropriate.

Exit question: What’s really going on here? Why strain so mightily to make an example of him?

Savage is the sharpest thorn against the common vibration of leftism. In a simpler time, they called it by its real name — evil.

How many men, women, and children has he slaughtered?

TXMomof3 on May 5, 2009 at 10:21 PM

You will find no better supporter of law enforcement or the military.
He loves his dog Teddy with a passion.
He loves Ramstein and Metallica.
He knows nutrition and botany inside out.
He was invaluable in stopping the Dubai ports deal.
He believes that a nation does not exist without: Borders, Language and Culture.
He is not afraid to state the obvious. This is what get’s him in hot water most of the time.
Our society has been so infected with Political Correctness that people do not express their true opinions or true feelings any longer. This is a horrible loss of freedom. We would probably have less frustration in our lives if we were not so worried about offending everyone. Most of us here have very similar political ideals but there is always one or two issues that divide us. There are people here that I respect immensely who have commented on certain issues that really upset me. This is life. We will not agree on everything because we come from difference experiences. If you could take a snapshot of my political views just ten years ago, it would be diametrically opposed to my views now.

In the fight against Political Correctness and open dialogue, Michael Savage is a warrior.

nice:

I am not a fan of Savage, not even a little bit. But so far as I know he has not plotted and planned and helped carry out the murders of thousands of civilians.

This is the thing about lefties, they think anyone who disagrees with them is a terrorist. You are either with them, or against them. Know what I mean?

We have to start banding together to have our voices heard. The 9/12 event in DC will hopefully be huge.
