Maybe if these centrists* remarks don’t woe us to the moderate side, The RINOs could jump up and down 3 times.
* In my opinion, these remarks are far from centrists. They are the road to fascism. If we sacrifice small government values and social conservatism, what’s left?

I love all the advice people who didn’t vote for the Republican Party want to give it!
Maybe we can take advice from Sean Penn and Dan Rather next!

Is the WH on Phase 2 of the “Let’s rip Rush” campaign. It seems like they’ve delegated it to the Republican poseurs now though. You know, to make it look more authentic.

Yeah, then Powell will become a hero for the democrats…
Who’s the next Bushy to beg for forgiveness from Teh One?

When they get Dick Cheney to tote Barry’s water then, and only then, will hell freeze over and I’ll ask for a jacket.
Limerick on May 5, 2009 at 11:13 PM
I’m just wondering when Powell is going to start ripping into Prejean… Some of us have already guessed that it will take Obama 1 month (= 30 Plastic Press Conferences) to make a snide remark about Prejean…
Maybe Powell will do it jointly with Obama – now that would be HISTORIC!
Upstater85 on May 5, 2009 at 11:13 PM
…in national affairs, that’s a trap.
Remember: Jeremiah Wright, Charlie Rangel and Tim McVeigh all served well and honorably. It’s for what they did after leaving the service that we remember them. Heck, even Adolf Hitler served honorably…and was relatively highly decorated for a junior enlisted person….
I say this as a veteran, married to a veteran, with two kids currently serving. Thank them for their service, then take ‘em apart if they step into the public arena and say something selfish, foolish or just plain wrong.
Veterans are no more apt to be noble, patriotic or selfless (or, rather, agenda-less) than non-veterans. To say that they are would be to impugn the honor of those who did not choose to serve over these last few decades when national circumstances didn’t make a rush to the colors a’la 1941 necessary.
Clearly, Mr. Powell is talking out of his fourth point of contact, and needs to be called on it. It’s time he lost his halo.

So sad; I used think very highly of Powell. I still thank him for his service, as with McCain – but also as with McCain, he’s dead wrong, and the sooner we set him adrift (with McCain, Jeb Bush, et al), the better.
Midas on May 5, 2009 at 11:15 PM
He didn’t know what it meant to being a conservative/Republican, so he was unable to tell other black people why they should be the same (To be fair, I don’t think that this was/is his job.) He just joined the popular ‘club’ to move up in the military.

Some here just don’t see it. All this RINO, DINO, Rushbashing, Palinbashing, bibleclingingruntotingbitterfolksbashing is meant to provoke us. They believe they are driving the game from the thicket so the hunters can gut ‘em. They believe, passionately, they they will win.
While they are beating the underbrush we need to climb into the branches. As they pass you know what to do.
Limerick on May 5, 2009 at 11:27 PM
This is not inconsistent with his professional career. He is an extreme beneficiary of affirmative action, and has spent his entire working life in government.
He doesn’t know anything else but subordinates doing his bidding and bringing his tea. Powell understands government power, but apparently has no philosophical understanding of freedom. Which I find richly ironic.

I’ll just reiterate what’s been said about Powell before – I’ll start taking his advice about how the GOP should run when he actually, you know, votes for a Republican. Or supports a Republican. Or, you know, even advocates a SINGLE Republican idea / ideological viewpoint.
Until then, you can stuff it, Colin. I respect your service to our country, but jesus, just shut the f*** up already.

…thank a policeman, next time you see one. They do what soldiers are trained to do, and some have to do it every day.
…thank a fireman, and for the same reason.
…thank an EMT technician, and I hope you see the next one you see socially….
…thank your boss the next time he hands you a signed paycheck for work honorably accomplished. He kept his part of the bargain.
…thank your neighbor for keeping an eye on your place…thank the barber or the beautician or the boxboy or the locksmith the next time he or she does a good job.
…thank the kid at the McDonalds who gets your order right. He has a sucky job, gets paid squat, and is thought a fool unable, by age but often more commonly by lack of anything to recommend him, to get a better gig.
…thank the truckers, farmers, construction workers, lawyers…well, not lawyers, I guess…and all the others who go about the business of this country…which Mr. Coolidge rightly pointed out is business….
…don’t gush over the soldiers, or the sailors or marines, et. al. Someone did that to me once, on returning from some overseas tramp, and I can assure you that it was damned humbling…and not in a good way.
Want to thank a service person? Elect people — like Mr. Reagan, under whom I had the privilege of serving, among others — who realize just what sort of hair-on, rough-shod, back-alley, take-no-prisoners world it is we live in, and who’re saavy and bad-ass’d enough to use the military cleverly, economically, and well. People in uniform are there to follow orders…elect people who’ll send them where their contributions won’t be inordinately costly, and their efforts won’t be wasted.
…and, next time you see one of those “MoveON”, “Give-peace-a-chance”, “America’s-always-wrong” morons wrestling his oversized papier-mache puppet down the boulevard, registering his disapproval of a free market, the franchise, and freedom in general…well, thank him for me by tickling his tonsils with your pinky and his bridgework with your wrist.
It’s citizens who make a country. Thank them. They’re who soldiers, sailors, marines, and for that matter policemen, firemen, EMT techs and the rest all do their special self-sacrificial thing for.
…ask Janeane Garofalo…can’t be a comedian without an audience….

All this stuff that Colin Powell, the Perfumed Prince, says about Americas wanting move government in their lives, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to be independent. All real Americans love to stand on their own. When you were kids, did you dream of growing up and becoming independent or did you want to stay with your mommy forever? Real Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a dependent loser. Real Americans play to be independent all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who was dependent on the government nanny and cried while watching Oprah. That’s why real Americans have never been dependent, and will never become dependent on a nanny government ..…because the very thought of being dependent on a nanny government is hateful to real Americans.

Quite simply, Powell is full to the brim of stinking liberal, hypocritical, and yes, racist shit.
I lost 500% respect for that jerk when he not only supported 0bama, but cried like an friggin baby when he won.
I don’t give a frack what his opinion of the GOP is now, as I’m sure he’s just saying this to legitimize the left wings minimization of anyone at all that labels themselves conservative.
And he’s full of shit times 10 when he says Americans want more taxes. Have a heart to heart talk with a low or no income person. They do not want more taxes, they just want more for free, with YOU paying.
STFU Powell, and get your fat old ass off the stage.

I have to strongly disagree Tommy. Powell was an affirmative action hack from the begininning. He was a lousy general who was always too cautious and had to be prodded into action by his superiors like McClellan. He always wanted to keep talking instead of ever fighting. He was promoted through the ranks like a rocket because he was a “well spoken” black man who’s career took off when affirmative action overtook the military, which it still does today. He has never been a conservative, no matter what he claims.
Bikerken on May 5, 2009 at 11:59 PM
Given all his comments before and after the election, I’m convinced Powell only called himself a Republican to advance his career in the military.
Christina_M on May 6, 2009 at 12:00 AM
Powell says people want more government rather than less. But, sometimes people want what is not good for them. If your teenager wants whiskey, do you give it to him because he wants it and you want to seem like a friend/nice guy. Giving people more government at the expense of the next generation that has to pay the tab is not only unhealthy for those who are made dependent on government but for the young who will be enslaved to the debt. Fortunately, kids don’t get to vote Good Dads out of office. Unfortunately, they can vote responsible leaders out of office. Thus, the Democratic majority.

I’ve been reading Ronald Reagan, A Life in Letters. He wrote a wonderful note to General Powell upon his retirement from the Army in 93. Reagan thought the world of Powell.
It is certainly disappointing to hear the recent positions of General Powell, but like anyone else that spends too much time in Washington, eventually they tend to get corrupted. If not ethically, then philosophically.

That’s because liberalism is not genetic. It’s a viral disorder. The stunted sexual reproduction of its hosts doesn’t necessarily prevent its transmission. In particular, it latches on to immigrants who almost always arrive in big cities and are at the mercy of the liberal virus carriers. It is also a factor in the re-education of healthy conservative youth as they arrive at liberal infested post-secondary education institutions.

You’re right: Sergeants run the Army, with the cooperation of officers. Officers are in charge, but a good officer with bad NCOs won’t get much done.
Officers who only interact with other officers are in a World of Their Own
