Obama campaign manager: I fear Jon Huntsman the most in 2012

posted at 5:10 pm on May 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

Jon Huntsman, the Utah governor who’s positioned himself as the moderate GOP alternative in 2012 by coming out in favor of civil unions? The RINO-in-chief, in other words?

That’s the one.

While no republican presidential candidate yet makes Obama’s team “shake in {their} shoes…,” President Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, now says Governor Jon Huntsman makes him, a “wee bit queasy…I think he’s really out there speaking a lot of truth about the direction of the party.”

To which Kirk Jowers of the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics says, “Huntsman has positioned himself in a great place right now because he is the only presidential candidate really running in the middle right now.”

Huntsman spent the weekend in Michigan which is a key G.O.P. primary state.

And Jowers – who has advised three republican presidential candidates – says Huntsman has now, “…become a top five candidate for 2012.”

Reportedly he’s also being advised by former McCain guru John Weaver. Three possible motives for Plouffe to say what he said:

1. It’s true: Huntsman really does make him nervous.

2. Reverse psychology: Huntsman doesn’t make him nervous, but if enough dopey Republicans think he does, maybe they’ll nominate him and it’ll be an easy kill for The One.

3. Reverse reverse psychology: Huntsman does make him nervous, in which case it’s important to kneecap him as soon as possible. Plouffe, being no dummy, knows that Rush et al. will simply assume that he’s practicing briar-patch reverse psychology and will immediately start to tear Huntsman down as a scarecrow whom the Dems would love to face, thereby demonizing him among the Republican base and ruining his chances before the campaign even begins.

Which is it? Also, how does Huntsman hope to capture the nomination with the base favoring a return to Reaganism as the solution to Hopenchange? Presumably his strategy is 2008 redux: Count on Palin, Romney, Huck, and maybe Sanford splitting the social cons amongst themselves while winning all the Brooksian center-rightists for himself. I hope he does run; I’m curious to see just how many of those Brooksians there are.

Update: Ambinder thinks Plouffe is on the level and that Huntsman’s for real, given the early primaries in moderate-leaning states like New Hampshire and Florida. That’s super, but how does Huntsman challenge Obama in the general with who knows how many Christian conservatives staying home out of objection to a nominee who supports civil unions (and who happens to be Mormon)? Are we sure Plouffe doesn’t want to face him?

The Wall on May 5, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Your point is accurate. The vindictive response from self-righteous radicals is their own burden to bear, not yours. They can not distinguish between ideology and person, a fault shared in fascist spheres coincidentally. Any critique of a dogma is taken as a personal assault by the dogmatic.

You would think that somebody with that “oh look at me, I am impressive with my wordsmithing” writing style would at least know what my 3rd grade daughter knows…namely, that the word “cannot” is ONE word…not two.

You must’ve ventured past your dictionary.com for a moment there, genius.

The reason they fear Huntsman is that he will split the morman vote with Romney….allowing for a cakewalk for Palin in the western states. Palin is the one they fear. If not, then why no Huntsman smear campaign? I didn’t even know what the guy looked like until I read this.

First of all, when I see Morman, its an immediate red flag. Its Mormon, not Morman.
Second of all, I’m Mormon, and do not like Huntsman, and not a big fan of Romney….that is a Mormon could vote for Palin…and likewise many people voted for Romney who weren’t Mormon.

And note to all anti-Mormons…who want to share their “concern” that anti-Mormon information will surface…stuff it already, you aren’t fooling anyone. Its the same as Obama expressing his concern with Chrysler and AIG etc that he and only he can keeps the the mob from attacking them.

From English-net.com

Some dictionaries defines ‘cannot” as “can not”, but that’s just to show the meaning of “cannot” is “can”+”not”. The correct spelling of “cannot” is “cannot”.
Why? No apparent reason. It is just one of those quirky things in English.

Yes, there are people who misspell “cannot” as “can not”. I read somewhere that software engineers are most prone to doing so. I came across 4 such misspellings in the last few years, three of which were in software packages: linksys router, QPP World War II game, and a stockbroker’s on-line trading program.

Some people claim that perhaps “cannot” is only spelled as “cannot” recently. I checked. No sir. Cannot has always been spelled as cannot. (I am re-reading the old classic ‘Treasure Island’, and lo-and-behold, it is “cannot” and not “can not”)

Ooooops. I guess YOU are the idiot…not me.

Yep, a bigot, a tool, and an idiot.

Huntsman’s grandfather was David Bruce Haight, one of the Quorum of the 12, which is the highest circle in Mormonism. It is their version of the 12 Apostles.

As a former mormon, I can attest to this as very important. The Huntsman family is a very big name in Mormonism. Far more important than The Romney family. Families who hold such stature in the mormon faith have great power within the church.

Not a slam on mormonism, just interesting.

That’s not a fair assessment. Polls have shown that there are a relatively high percentage of people who- unfairly perhaps- would be reluctant to vote for a Mormon.

That shouldn’t be an excuse to argue against a Mormon running at all, but pointing out the fact that a Mormon candidate does have a slightly higher hill to climb isn’t a demonstration of bigotry.

Thank you CV… I often have wondered how people can preach understanding and freedom out one side of their mouth and slam people who believe differently than they do out of the other side without seeing their hypocrisy.

“Everyone should be free to believe what they want!”*

*This statement is not valid if you disagree with my views. I will try to belittle you and be rude to you and tell you you’re an idiot if you disagree with me, you dang mormons and democrats and moderates and Palin-haters, etc etc. Can’t you see you’re all IDIOTS compared to me? You have NO RIGHT to believe what you believe without me bashing you and not listening to what you have to say!

Sounds like a TROLL to me… Joe Caps. That’s right! You’re a TROLL!

Anywho, The Wall, I think nitpicking grammar and spelling is not a good way of debating whether one is wrong or not (even if Joe Caps started it). Everyone makes mistakes, and I think it’s kind of demeaning to fall to arguing spelling and grammar. It’s like the “I’m smarter than you, so therefore I’m right.” argument… There are lots of smart people on all sides of any debate. I have an IQ of 145 and I’m Mormon… but that doesn’t mean I’m necessarily more right than Joe, who might have an IQ of 90 or something. However, Joe is obviously a bigot, irrespective of his IQ. And he has a right to believe what he wants, and I’m not going to slam his beliefs like he is mine. It’s obvious he doesn’t want a “smart” debate, he wants to be rude and goad people into being rude back so that he can “make a point”. Thank you for your defense, however. It’s always nice to see someone who’s not mormon defend my right to my own belief. :)

Also, sometimes I am not very good at grammar and sometimes I misspell things despite being “smart”. So I just don’t think it’s a good idea to argue it.

Which side has more smart people anyway? I’m not sure, but a lot of the 12 apostles for the LDS church have graduated from prestigious colleges (including Ivy League). I don’t see that as an argument for the LDS church or anything though, as a lot of pastors are pretty smart too and I’m sure some have graduated from Ivy League schools.

tbrosz on May 5, 2009 at 8:49 PM

We worship Jesus Christ. As far as how Jon governs as a Mormon…the 12 Apostles and the Prophet is against civil unions. Yep, John’s religion is relevant /sarc.

Conservative Voice on May 5, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Wait, CV, I think I may misunderstand you here… the church put out an official statement saying:

“The Church does not object to rights for same-sex couples regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights, so long as these do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches.”

I think they have to do civil unions to do that sort of thing properly… so it sounds like the church is sort of ok with civil unions, as long as churches aren’t affected, etc. Or at least they are neutral as far as civil unions go.

But yes, as you said, we worship Jesus Christ, and not the twelve apostles any more than a Christian worships Peter, James and John (portlandon, you should know this if you were LDS properly). You do have believe that they are prophets, but they are still men and aren’t perfect, and we are told that in church. However, salvation and redemption still only comes through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us.

Dr. ZhivBlago on May 5, 2009 at 9:08 PM

It is possible, Wall, that it’s been so long since portlandon’s been to church that he just doesn’t remember properly. Or it’s possible that he has been talking to one of the many anti-mormon pastors who like to pull stuff like that out of non-connected verses in the BOM, POGP, etc… regardless of whether or not we teach it or have ever taught it or if the verse actually means that. By golly, if one verse in our scriptures might possibly skewed to mean something, it MUST be WHAT WE BELIEVE! At least, this is what I have experienced growing up in Oregon. Lest anyone think I am a “blind Utah Mormon”, I was raised in Oregon and had plenty of challenges to my beliefs growing up and didn’t go to church for a while while I figured out what was true.

Portlandon was probably a missionary who went just because he was “supposed” too rather than because he felt it was right or anything. It happens. I know people who have done that because of pressure from their families. I don’t agree with families who do that, but it does occur. And sometimes it makes the person a bit resentful. *shrug* I don’t think there is a reason to doubt his claim and I don’t think that there is a reason to ridicule him either, Wall, he’s been very respectful… more than I can say for Ol’ Joe.

Conservative Voice on May 5, 2009 at 8:16 PM

I’m not going to throw my lot in with the anti-Mormon brigade; debating religion is pointless because it’s an unwinnable arguement. My point is that one shouldn’t be labelled a bigot for mentioning that a candidate’s religion could hurt him at the ballot box, whatever his politics.

I’d vote for a Mormon presidential candidate that had the same priorities that I do in a heartbeat; however there are those who wouldn’t. In terms of electability, it at least has to be considered if for no other reason than to soften resistance to voting for such a candidate.

Hollowpoint on May 5, 2009 at 9:20 PM

It was my understanding that Huntsman went beyond the Church’s position…since I live in Hawaii…I will admit I am not totally up on the fine print with Utah politics.

Conservative Voice on May 5, 2009 at 8:58 PM

There were all sorts of billboards here in Utah with that quote after they said it, trying to get Utah to vote for some equal rights legislation this last time around (died before it got anywhere). It sounds like the church is ambivalent on the civil unions issue, just like they are on the “who to vote for for president” issue every year. “The church does not endorse…” “Prayerfully consider the candidates” etc. :) Knowing some mormon democrats/moderates, they can still be in line with church teachings while voting for civil unions, Obama, etc. because the church basically only has a definite opinion on legislation when it is infringing upon religious rights/freedoms or is something like abortion, where lives are at stake. Civil unions don’t necessarily infringe on church rights or on our belief that the only marriage should be between a man and a woman.

I would vote for civil unions, most likely, if they were introduced on the ballot as long as it is VERY clear and VERY well written that churches are NOT obligated to perform them if they don’t want to. I believe that these people have a right to do what they want, as long as they’re not hurting anyone but themselves. Justice will be meted out by God in whatever way He sees fit.

Christina D on May 5, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Hollowpoint on May 5, 2009 at 9:20 PM

It is pointless to argue over religion, since nothing can be proved one way or the other. That said though, I don’t think Republicans, or Democrats, or whatever party should give second thoughts on who they should put up as their man, because of their religion.
Are there people who won’t vote for old people…yes. Are there people who won’t vote for someone who doesn’t have “experience”. Yes. Are there people who won’t vote for a woman or a person of color, or a …you get the point. No matter who is brought up, there are going to be people who are shallow and narrow minded. I say bring on a Conservative Black Mormon Woman! ( I hate identity politics, but it would be fun exposing people’s bigotry — I would vote if she was a conservative, everything else doesn’t matter ).

Oh, and the Mormon issue may have hurt Romney, but his problem was he couldn’t get enough people excited about voting for him even when he was flooding the airwaves. It’s up to him if he wants to burn a few million trying again.

Bringing up the argument that some people won’t vote for someone because they’re Mormon doesn’t make you a bigot. It’s true that people consider religion whether or not they should and stating that fact is fine. Being like Joe and saying “People won’t vote for Huntsman because some Mormons killed people once, a century ago. Now here’s some anti-mormon links.” is bigotry.

If an atheist that aligned exactly with your political beliefs and had a record of following those political ideals ran for president as a democrat or republican or independent, would you vote for him still in all three party situations? It is a possibility, you know. The question is, though, are you unbigoted enough to vote for that candidate? If so, then I commend you. :) I’m 99% positive that I would, as long as he didn’t like cheat on his wife and was unsavory in that sort of way. I think that’s the real bigotry test. ;)

PopTech and I would battle the religious nuts that think God himself has appointed Sarah Palin to be the next POTUS. You got WAY too many Palin trolls that you need some balance.

Its time for HotAir to step up before it just becomes an echo chamber like conservatives4Palin.com or something.

We bring intelligent balance to HotAir. We are conservatives…just not DUMB ones like the Palin Cultists.

You need us…badly.

Giving green room space to Treacher and MadisonConservative and the others who actually think Palin is smart or something….lame.

You need the opinion of those who are conservative AND intelligent. Palintologists clearly dont provide that.

We are the best hope to bringing balance to HotAir. We are like the Jedi and the Palintologists are the Empire on HotAir.

You will turn HotAir into a forum of Palintologists and, thus, reap the whirlwind of stupidity.

And, no, despite Treacher’s WEAK ASS dismissals, neither one of us voted for Obama. I voted McCain (while holding my nose), PopTech went with Barr.

Personally, I don’t want Palin to be in office because she is not very good at explaining herself. She has good policies for the most part, but I am sorry… I don’t want someone out there that can’t give a satisfactory explanation for WHY they are doing something and who can’t stand up for their policies well.

I don’t know who I’ll support at this point, but Jindal seems like a good bet right now to me.
