Murtha’s nephew scores millions in non-compete Pentagon contracts

To hear Robert Murtha explain, if he had to tell us what he does for the government, the terrorists would win. The Washington Post seems less than convinced. They report that John Murtha’s nephew has a knack of garnering millions in Pentagon contracts without competition, and that his facility seems less than productive enough to deliver that kind of value back to the DoD:
The headquarters of Murtech, in a low-slung, bland building in a Glen Burnie business park, has its blinds drawn tight and few signs of life. On several days of visits, a handful of cars sit in the parking lot, and no trucks arrive at the 10 loading bays at the back of the building.
Yet last year, Murtech received $4 million in Pentagon work, all of it without competition, for a variety of warehousing and engineering services. With its long corridor of sparsely occupied offices and an unmanned reception area, Murtech’s most striking feature is its owner — Robert C. Murtha Jr., 49. He is the nephew of Rep. John P. Murtha, the Pennsylvania Democrat who has significant sway over the Defense Department’s spending as chairman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.
Robert Murtha said he is not at liberty to discuss in detail what his company does, but for four years it has subsisted on defense contracts, according to records and interviews. He said Murtech’s 17 employees “provide necessary logistical support” to Pentagon testing programs that focus on detecting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, “and that’s about as far as I feel comfortable going.” Giving more details could provide important clues to terrorist plotters, he said.
Wow! That must be some kind of warehousing work going on at Murtech! Murtha claims that the no-bid contracts he received came because the government was “in a bind” after one of their other warehousing contracts ended, and they needed someone already established in the field. He also claims that the name “Murtha” hasn’t helped him in the business of no-bid Pentagon contracts, but at least one of his contracts came through PMA, the John Murtha-associated lobbying group now at the center of a federal investigation for corruption in earmarking and influence peddling.
As far as the name “Murtha” being a hindrance, the Washington Post notes that Robert’s not the only Murtha doing all right despite that supposed handicap. His father, John Murtha’s brother Robert Sr, runs another highly-successful lobbying group, KSA, that specializes in — wait for it — defense contracts from the Appropriations Committee. If the name “Murtha” is a drag on government contracting, imagine what they could do by changing their names … maybe to Visclosky.
There may be good reasons to occasionally award no-bid contracts for highly specialized work, but warehousing doesn’t fall into that category. Granting no-bid Pentagon contracts to a powerful Congressman’s nephew screams for an investigation, and a deeper look at the “culture of corruption” that seems to surround John Murtha and his allies on Capitol Hill.

Why in God’s name is this criminal not in jail? Why in God’s name are the people of Johnstown so damned stupid to keep sending this bastard back to Congress? Why is the Justice Department ignoring this criminal activity?

How do guys like Murtha get elected in the first place? I can’t picture a young Murtha stumping on the campaign trail and giving speeches that impress anyone. He sounds like he has a 5th grade eduction, and didn’t finish at the top of the class.

This type of corruption is business as usual for many of these lying thieves that are robbing us blind. If Obama allows massive theft with no accountabilility, then he has no credibilty for any other thing he declares. His transparency is really transparent.
NO ACCOUNTABILITY = NO CREDIBILITY

Understand what is going on. The NY Times and CBS news and Washington Post have all been pushing anti Murtha stories.
The “Younger” gang of democrats want to get rid of the older senior dems. So they stab them in the back by selling them out to their friends in the media in hopes of moving up in the heirarchy.
Id be upset if the GOP did this. But its Murtha who is getting slammed and I have to laugh and laugh. He built this house of cards and the dems are blowing on it.
William Amos on May 5, 2009 at 9:48 AM
Well, the voters keep voting for him because he’s the biggest pork producer on the planet, and most of it goes to his cronies and apparently his relatives back home. He laughs it off, it’s part of his game. His fellow congressman give him kudos and pat him on the back for a job well done every time they pass a budget. Remember when he played the part in the Star Wars movie?

This continuous rape of the people of Pennsylvania and our country makes Obama prophetic when he called them what they appear to be. Just this morning alone, Specter, Dodd and Murtha have all proven, without doubt, this country cannot survive without term limits.

Akzed on May 5, 2009 at 9:55 AM
Term limits are truly, without a doubt, the most important thing this country can do to move forward, but I’m afraid it is a dream that won’t be realized in my lifetime. It would have to pass congress and not one member would vote for it. If people went into government knowing that they had a limited amount of time to make a difference and then get out, we’d get a whole new breed of politicians and it would literally force out the rotten, corrupt, fat cats who park their rumps in DC for a lifetime.

OK…bad analogy!

It’s disgusting.

I think William Amos is right.. this is the new breed of Democrats culling the older/senior Democrats. They’re doing it so they can get into the prime spots for grabbing their share of the loot.

This state is a sewer. Not a clean politician anywhere. It makes me sick. My own Congresscritter, Patrick Murphy, has sucked up to and defended and campaigned with Jack Murtha. He should be thrown out of office on that basis alone, but hey, he’s young and handsome and pretends to be a moderate at election time, so the sheep just keep voting for him.
There is a horrendous series running now in the Inquirer about the rampant sleaze and corruption on Philadelphia’s Board of Tax Review, which is supposed to set the tax assessments for all real property. The board turns out to be a bunch of political hacks and they have used tax assessments to punish enemies of the city’s political power brokers for years. This follows an expose last winter of over a billion dollars in unpaid bail money never collected by the city from bail jumpers.
I sent Ed a tip about a local company that has just been debarred by the Rendell Administration from getting any further state contracts. It was a total political witch hunt against a company that is non-union and hosted a campaign event for John McCain last fall.
This stuff just gets yawns from the voters. I don’t get it. They did manage to get exercised about the midnight pay raise the legislature rammed through in 2007, and threw a bunch of incumbents out over it. But since then, nothing.
Pennsylvanians apparently assume that all politicians are corrupt, and just vote for the ones they like.

In their minds, they’d be fools NOT to keep sending Murtha back to congress. As long as he’s in, Johnstown is on a gravy train with biscuit wheels. When you realize how many people owe their paychecks to his pork-shovelling ways.
The lovely and talented Mary Katherine Ham journeyed there about a year and a half ago to check things out for herself. Good stuff.

It’s called intellectual laziness. The sheeple don’t care about what’s really going on, as long as the TV is on and feeding them their daily dose of crap.
As long as people believe that Jon Stewart’s show is a legitimate source of news (and yes, I have had people tell me that with a straight face), this is what we will get.
With these stupid people thinking it’s their “duty” to cast uninformed votes and elect scoundrels like Murtha and Obama, I fear that change will only come through another American revolution.
UltimateBob on May 5, 2009 at 11:22 AM
Bambi,
See my previous post. I totally agree with you.
I’ll say it again, I fear that our only recourse is some sort of insurgency. Another American Revolution if you will.
The tea parties are a start. But it seems that (with few exceptions) Washington has not gotten the message. It’s obvious that the primary function of our federal government is to dole out favors and big $$$$ to the well-connected. 98% of what they
spendwaste our tax dollars on is unconstitutional.UltimateBob on May 5, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I wrote here that the only way Washington’s swamp will get drained is if we have another abrupt change of direction. We know it won’t happen with Ms. Pelosi as Speaker because they’re already twisting arms to prevent an ethics investigation.

CORRUPTION!!! No contract worth $4 million is going to have any kind of info, that would make or break terrorism. This is bogus. There are billion dollar contracts out there, that wouldn’t make the claims Robert Murtha jr. is making.

Remember Detroit Congressman Diggs? He was censured by his peers (ha) in congress and prosecuted for taking kickbacks from his staff in order to keep their jobs. The people in his district re-elected him AFTER all that. PA is the same way. Murtha could murder a puppy live on CNN and they would still re-elect him. On the bright side since going for Obama and Murtha in the election they will find the coal industry is doomed and they voted for change to a new job. Good luck with that!
