Barack Obama insults Western allies as “tax havens”

posted at 3:42 pm on May 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when Barack Obama ran on the promise to restore our diplomatic relations with out allies in the West?  The Dutch and the Irish just discovered its expiration date.  In rolling out his plan to close supposed loopholes for multinational corporations, the Obama administration attacked Ireland, the Netherlands, and Bermuda as “tax havens” specifically and explicitly acting to deny the US government its due from tax collections.  The Dutch are particularly incensed (via TMV):

Ambassador Renee Jones-Bos reached out to both the White House and the Treasury Department to express her displeasure with a fact sheet released by the administration that said “nearly one-third of all foreign profits reported by U.S. corporations in 2003 came from just three small, low-tax countries: Bermuda, the Netherlands and Ireland.” …

“We were greatly surprised to see The Netherlands appear in this paper, because we are working together with the U.S. – also in a G20 framework – in dealing with countries that have bank secrecy or are non-transparent,” spokesman Floris van Hövell. “The Netherlands shares tax-related information with the U.S. without reservation.”

The White House did not return a request for comment.

Van Hovell said in a phone call and follow-up email to The Hill that the Dutch corporate tax rate is 25.5 percent, “which puts us in the medium-tax rate category (and not in the low-tax category).”
He added that in the past decade, The Netherlands has entered into exchange treaties with countries like the U.S.

“The Netherlands is the 16th largest economy in the world and the 4th largest investor in the USA; the USA is the largest investor in the Netherlands,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Ireland — which can expect to take a big hit to its already-struggling economy — waxes more fatalistic (via William Amos):

Fine Gael’s Enterprise spokesman Leo Varadkar said Ireland was not a tax haven and the Government must fight to ensure this tag was not applied to us.

Despite the delay before its implementation the plan is likely to hit the Irish economy. The exchequer could lose billions in tax revenue if firms decide it is no longer financially worthwhile to keep their money here. US officials also cited Ireland as an example of a place where jobs have been created that could easily have gone to a US state. …

Mr Obama announced the changes, despite intensive lobbying from corporations. Industry leaders claim US companies will be at a disadvantage as they will be subject to double taxation.

It could force US corporations to move their headquarters abroad, business leaders claim. That somewhat unlikely scenario could benefit Ireland.

So much for handling our diplomatic relations with a more respectful, less arrogant tone.

These people are such morons. The answer is not to raise taxes on U.S. business operating in foreign countries but to lower taxes for businesses operating here. We should emulate these counties, not villify them.

Maybe they can throw off the central government shackles. I’d put more money on Ireland than anyone else over there, aside from the Eastern European places.

I get that you’re “holding them accountable” Ed, but this seems like tempest in a teapot fare to me. Not only is the Netherlands just the kind of “Old Europe” nation that was intentionally and publicly marginalized in the context of defense relations…but you tend to always take complimentary statements at face value while constantly questioning the motives and content of statements that dont match your preconceived notion.

While the Irish and Dutch governments issuing statements expressing concern is surely something to note, acting as if this event has very clear broad ramifications is I think giving Obama a bit too much credit…

2nd Ammendment Mother on May 5, 2009 at 5:02 PM

Daggett is right.

I keep waiting for Obama to do anything, even a mistake, that helps the economy, but it never happens. I have never heard him say the words Growth or Freedom, because that is simply not what he is about.

Even the little things he does hurt the economy, like releasing the States to again impose their own gas formulations on the supply, after Bush lowered them to 8 different types. That was why the price went to $1.50 a gal and why it is well over $2.50 now.

As to the Tax Havens, this is Obama building his “Berlin Wall”, or Gold Wall as I prefer to term it. He can’t stop people from fleeing America yet, but he is trying to stop the flow of Capital outward.

Like any leftist, it would never occur to him to lower the taxes to attract businesses back in. It only occurs to him to try to slam the door on the flow of Capital outward by free people leaving a Nation that is growing more unpleasant toward Capitalists.

Like Rush leaving New York, Leftists oscillate from derision at those leaving high tax areas, “Don’t let the door hit you in the rear on the way out” to bizarre notions that leaving a High Tax area is somehow “Unpatriotic” while they themselves clearly have a problem with paying their taxes on both personal wealth and those of their employees.

We are getting close to the nicking point, as Obama is now clearly running afoul of the Constitution. What comes next will be unpleasant.

I am a white male (evil) I’m Jewish (eviler) and I come from a semi-rich family (Satan)
If you keep taxing producers at this point, I can’t get a job. If I can’t get a job I can’t pay taxes. If I can’t pay taxes, the government can’t scapegoat me because of the first two. If the government can’t scapegoat me it has to scapegoat a dimishing sector of the populace who can move. If they move then the government is completely utterly and definitively screwed

It’s our right as Americans to own one of the 18,000 companies in the United States with the same Cayman Islands address.

As far as I am concerned, calling any country a “tax haven” is a compliment. If only America were a tax haven.
