Video: Romney takes a shot at Palin?

I can’t quite believe he meant to be this nasty but her fans at Conservatives 4 Palin are outrageously outraged. Either way, should make for a sweet battle royal in the comments between Mittheads and Palinistas. This is reminiscent, actually, of the last time he mentioned Palin publicly, when at CPAC he made a self-deprecating joke about how much more public interest there is in her than him — while also pointedly noting her absence. I think he’s trying to be self-deprecating here too by deflecting John King’s question about why there aren’t more Republicans on Time’s “most influential” list with a joke about how ugly they all are, but it comes off like he’s calling her a lightweight whose influence derives from her “cuteness.” (Which wouldn’t be the first time a GOP candidate’s made insinuations along those lines.) If she’s the butt of the joke, though, rather than the rest of the GOP, how to explain the mention of Rush here too? Surely Romney isn’t suggesting he’s also on the list for creampuff reasons.

Politico piles on:

“She’s bigger in the media than in reality,” lamented GOP consultant Mike Murphy, a longtime friend and adviser to John McCain.

“Palin,” he said, “is the only Republican politician right now who is interesting, a little different, connected to the last campaign and related to an occasional story in the National Enquirer.”

Another GOP strategist carped, “The media is still obsessed with the Tina Fey impersonations and intra-campaign drama.”…

Palin was initially not included on the Council because she didn’t respond to requests, but Sen. John McCain said in a conference call with reporters that he hoped she would be involved with the group.

“They would rather just ignore Palin,” said Murphy of the GOP mainstream, “but the media won’t let them.”

Of course they’d rather ignore her. They’re trying to nurture a media meme that the party’s finally rebuilding; the last thing they want is to put a spotlight on Palin and then see that meme cannibalized by tabloid stories about Levi Johnston or whatever. Until that business is settled, assuming it ever is, they’re better off keeping their distance. Even so, take Murphy’s warnings with a grain of salt: He’s been a Palin naysayer since the beginning, as well as a longtime advisor to … Mitt Romney.

After you watch, enjoy this amusing clip from C4P slapping Mitt around for his possible insult to Our Lady.

Did he happen to name any policy differences between her and Romney that distinguishes her good old-fashioned American conservatism from his apparent RINOism? Offhand, I can’t think of a single issue on which they disagree.

Allahpundit on May 4, 2009 at 2:29 PM

You ask for a policy difference, then when healthcare is mentioned snark

So health care is now the litmus test? All right, good to know.

Allahpundit on May 4, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Disingenous at best.

Oh, you also tried the “how is Palin different from Huckabee Romney” meme months ago.

Thought creativity was your forte?

cs89 on May 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM

ACORN officials both locally and nationally say the charges are a complete surprise; national representatives say they were also unaware of any investigation.

Not aware of an investigation? I believe the story of the investigation went nationwide this past year. Liars.

The charges a surprise? Every criminals luck runs out eventually. Just what was on those computers, and in their files. hmmmmmmmmm?

capejasmine on May 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I like Sarah but she has backpedaled plenty! And some of that talk about being opposed to the Bridge to Nowhere was pretty deceptive! She’s made plenty of compromises. Worshipping any candidate is dangerous business.

Keep your eyes open people. No one is running for President yet! No need to take sides!

petunia on May 4, 2009 at 2:41 PM

Not worshipping, but if you’ve seen the old clips of Mitt (from 94? I believe?) debating Teddy K and then as gov and then as a pres candidate, you’ll see he kind of has a “I’ll be whatever you want me to be” streak. I think he’s conservative and a good guy, but comparing the two careers, Sarah’s just more of a rock to her principles than Mitt. Neither are perfect, of course, put Romney sends up many more red flags.

Pasalubong on May 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Boy it seems PDS strikes even GOPers.

They are really scared of Sarah !

William Amos on May 4, 2009 at 2:41 PM

Healthy criticism isn’t PDS. We aren’t trig truthers, for goodness’ sake. I think treating her less like a fragile doll and more like an actual candidate helps her, and our party. I love her social positions. I am not ashamed of her AT ALL, as most with PDS are…but to say that anyone who is critical of her positions is afraid of her isn’t quite fair to us or her. She needs to be able to stand on policy.

Acorn goes down, media bias is being exposed, and there may not be much old media left. Could be a very different environment come 2010/12…

What is it that Hillary’s critics said that has to do with the opposite sex in general? Calling her a “ballbreaker,” a “maneater,” etc. What’s wrong with that? It’s specific to Hillary, right?

I don’t ever remember seeing these particular words, but I’ll trust you on them. I didn’t like Hillary but I don’t think anybody sane could accuse her of using her outstanding looks to further her political career. She used her husband’s name, which has little to do with her sex per se. So I don’t even know how this comparison works.

Again, the charge against Palin is that she’s too shallow and compensates for it with the electorate with her looks. One could imagine the same type of charge made against Schwarzenegger. I’m not talking right now about how fair that is. I’m just saying there’s nothing sexist about it.

Slick Willy.

Mommypundit on May 4, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Damn right, Mama.

blatantblue on May 4, 2009 at 2:50 PM

Mild? Suggesting the only reason she has influence is because she’s “cute”? If that’s what he meant to say, it’s more than a little sexist.
What do you mean “sexist”? It would be sexist to say that the only way a woman can get elected is through her looks. What is it that Mitt said that has to do with the opposite sex in general?

radiofreevillage on May 4, 2009 at 2:38 PM

I thought he was saying the only reason People Mag noticed her is that she was so good looking not that her looks made her “influencial”.

People apparently left her off the best looking people list while including Tina Fey… who nobody noticed was particularly good looking until she did the Palin impressions.

I think especially in context Mitt was attacking the magazines not the candidate.

But if he holds some animosity because she got the nod from McCain that would be understandable.

The economy was Mitt’s issue and now he is on the outside looking in… it must be more than a little frustrating for him.

I doubt Mitt has anything against Palin other that she won the VP stakes and he lost.

The only thing of value on this thread is the news that someone has sued ACORN.

Does anything excite Allahpundit more than trashing Mitt Romney and/or Sarah Palin if/when he has the chance? It’s palpable, which is kind of gross.

Romney ran on a fascistic platform for the government to absorb industry. In that, Romney’s promises for Michigan resemble Obama at this point.

Evidently you haven’t read anything I’ve posted here. I, for one, have not ever read your posts here
Mommypundit on May 4, 2009 at 2:38 PM

So we’re even! (I’ve been posting here for well over a year, but nobody pays any attention, so you’re not alone.) No hard feelings. Yeah, I hear you about her kids. But you know, there used to be a saying–leaders are born not made. Part of our problem is we’ve had way too many of the “made” variety lately. She strikes me as one of the “born” variety, as was Reagan, which, for me, places an uncomfortable responsibility in her lap. It also generates an irony, which, of course the left would prefer to see as hypocrisy. She will have to sacrifice, and her children will suffer some from what she has to do. She could be the archetype of a whole new, more normative type of feminist. Camille Paglia, who is sane about 30% of the time, wrote a really compelling piece on this in Slate back during the campaign, in which she said that Sarah Palin wasn’t something new, as much as she was the resurrection of something old and forgotten–strong pioneer women–of which she proceeded to cite some really awesome examples. We’ll see. She’s demonstrated some weaknesses since the campaign, but I like her chances when it comes to growth, and the ability to learn.

smellthecoffee on May 4, 2009 at 2:57 PM

Again, did he happen to mention what makes her the second coming of Reagan as opposed to, say, Romney or Jindal?

Allahpundit on May 4, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Rush basically said Sarah represents the Reagan Conservatism wing of the party. She believes strongly in limited government and federalism. Michael Reagan has called her the reincarnation of his dad.

Rush was a big fan of Jindal’s in the past but Jindal seems to have been trending more moderate lately. Jindal has been meeting with McCain and this NCNA group. As for Mitt, even Chris Matthews on Hardball has said that Mitt is a moderate (although right of center) compared to Sarah.

As you noted above , Sarah has not joined the NCNA group yet but Romney and Jindal have.

I don’t get Allah. He trashes everyone who is perceived as Conservative to whatever degree. Romney, Palin, Rush, etc.

Obviously these people are not perfect but surely he can find something he doesn’t hate about Palin or Rush or someone conservative. The only people he seems to have anything positive to say about are “moderates” like Meghan McCain, Olympia Snowe, etc.

Kronos on May 4, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Pasalubong on May 4, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I disagree. I think Mitt was running in a very liberal place and I think his political stands became more solidly conservative over time. Partly from his experience with trying to give the other side the benefit of the doubt. When he realized it was a culture war and sitting on the fence was losing the war–he manned up.

He stood up more strongly for the positions he already held and when he found it impossible to sign his name allowing more abortions he changed his position. The theoretical became the real world and he had to choose. He chose life. But that makes you mad for some reason.

But I guess some people don’t believe a candidate’s views can evolve over time. I guess you wouldn’t have like Reagan under the same circumstances.

That is true, “trash” is too strong a word. I just meant whenever you talk about them it tends to be in at least a somewhat negative light. Again, there’s no problem with criticism but you also never seem to do anything but criticize.

And yes if it was just an echo chamber it’d be boring. I don’t expect it to be all “Palin is awesome” posts all the time, I just find it annoying that you seem incapable of saying anything positive about certain people.

Generally I think Allah is pretty good, he just gets on my nerves sometimes especially with his “litmus test” meme that he started using back when Rush said he wanted the president to fail. Perhaps I’m just overly sensitive to his devil’s advocate routine.

Remember that line of thinking that you used to hear about how “if women ran things, the finances would be in order because women keep the finances of the family in order,” kind of stuff? Sarah Palin is the first woman I’ve ever seen in politics who embodied that. And because of who she is, the very people who came up with that line despised her for it.

maverick muse on May 4, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Im not settled on any one candidate or representative because I feel that although we all fall under the conservative tent in one respect or another, the individual person deserves to be looked at for what they can bring to the discussion table.

We all must make our decisions on which candidate represents us closest, and I for one am willing to set aside some of my personal desires in a candidate, but I am completely unwilling to set aside the basic values of conservative philosophy. I am betting that there are many like me. Im tired of settling for what has been deemed best for the party,by those who have played a huge part in the orchestration of the party’s fall from power.

I am ready for a fight on behalf of the right candidate, when that candidate comes along. There are just a few that I have faith in at the moment. If they have the strength enough to fight for me. then I will stand and fight for them.

This was not a shot at Palin. Romney isn’t that kind of guy, IMO.

I don’t think a guy who got bashed relentlessly by every other Republican in the field last year is going to do the same to Palin….

People are looking way too far into it, IMO.

Not all of your demographic, and you dont own a demographic. Stop bashing and start being part of a solution. If you dont want to be part of our solution then go be part of their solution, but for petes sake, you only make it worse for your side by the bashing. So I will personally thank you for solidifying the base against anything that remotely resembles your ideology. You offer no solutions, and no ideas.

canditaylor68 on May 4, 2009 at 3:32 PM

How dull would the site be if it was only stuff defending Palin, say (which I did vis-a-vis Levi Johnston)?

Allahpundit on May 4, 2009 at 3:03 PM

The Palinistas defended Levi Johnston when he was supposed to be getting married to Bristol Palin. Then when the engagement was broken off and he went on a talk show the Palinistas began using all the insults against Johnston – that he was white trash, that his mother was a drug addict – that they had said were shameful when the left had been using them a few months earlier.

If Palin left the GOP they’d go with her to set up the Palin Party. “Vote Sarah Palin – She’s the only real American”.

Why do people so quickly dismiss their favorite potentail as not attacking another GOPer and blame it al on the media trying to divide the Party?

As good little Obama tools,of course the media want to foster squabbling in the GOP and it makes ratings. However if Romney thinks he should be the nominee he needs to do a much better job of not giving them nasty petty sound bites – even if that is what the media wants. If he can’t handle being the press why should anyone think he could handle the WH?

katiejane on May 4, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Goodbye Mitt

bill30097 on May 4, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Seems to me it’s imagined insults. More of an insult to the beauty of Republicans. He’s saying there are others as influential as Palin. While that’s dubious at the moment, I don’t think of this as an insult as much as an inclusion of other Republican leaders such as Jindal and DeMint. While he is currently out of office, Romney couldn’t have been refering to himself, could he? Nah!

The libs are just trying to cause more division, but it seems to me that Jeb Bush caused much more than Romney. It’s time to get serious about the Constitution Party. Either the Republicans stop pushing moderation and the death of Reaganism, or it’s time to leave. Then let’s see how Democrat lites do.
And btw, I hate to comment on Meghan McCain posts (you’re just asking Allah to keep them coming when you do), so let me say it here: Take her with you, Jeb, and get out of the party or else the base will.

The problem is not just that some of the GOP won’t support Palin in 2012, but that many of us wouldn’t vote for Romney under any cirumstances.

Romney is trying to stay visible and in the hunt, but many of us are simply not interested.

If the GOP wants to run moderates, it can do so without us.

Our country needs a third party anyway.

molonlabe28 on May 4, 2009 at 4:00 PM

The Palinistas defended Levi Johnston when he was supposed to be getting married to Bristol Palin.

i.e., gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Then when the engagement was broken off and he went on a talk show the Palinistas began using all the insults against Johnston – that he was white trash, that his mother was a drug addict – that they had said were shameful when the left had been using them a few months earlier.

When he showed himself to be, in fact, a slimeball, they stopped defending him? They were actually critical? Such hypocrisy!

aengus on May 4, 2009 at 3:33 PM

Honestly, take this out of the realm of the political, and you have basically a young man who gets his high school girlfriend pregnant, but intends to marry her. It’s not surprising that many people would defend him, thinking that he was doing the mature and responsible thing. And when he instead starts trashing his supposed fiancee behind her back, then breaks off the engagement, is it really a surprise that people who were defending him before now agree he was a scumbag after all?

Take the politics out of it, and the story is not even all that unusual. Which belies the assertion that Palin’s supporters are acting out of pure politics.
