Quotes of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on May 4, 2009 by Allahpundit
“Much as I admire President Obama, I believe with something approaching certainty that his spending will bring this country to its knees. ‘Sustainability’ is all the rage as a buzzword, but a $3.6 trillion budget is not ‘sustainable.’ Doubling the national debt is not ‘sustainable.’ Inaction in the face of $77 trillion in unfunded liabilities (Social Security, Medicare, entitlements) is not ‘sustainable.’ This is math, not ideology.
The Republican Party once could lay claim to the mantle of being the fiscally responsible, or ‘Daddy Party.’ That reputation was squandered some time ago, but it could be regained if the party would content itself with that all-important goal, and not instead fight doomed skirmishes over gay marriage, stem-cell research, abortion and creationism, Ten Commandments in the courtroom, and other such issues that the country has by and large already decided upon. The GOP once liked to call itself the party of ‘the Big Tent.’ But America itself is the bigger tent. ‘Much as I admire President Obama, I believe with something approaching certainty that his spending will bring this country to its knees.”

“It’s especially unsettling for a free speech girl like me. The First Amendment is important — but lately, it feels like my right of self-expression is being squashed.
One example: Obama’s comment to Jay Leno on ‘The Tonight Show,’ comparing his bowling abilities to someone in the Special Olympics.
Can you imagine the uproar had Bush said that? He’d be banished from bowling alleys for eternity. His bowling average and IQ would have immediately been compared in Twitter messages demanding his resignation.”
***
“Changing the tone in Washington is not something Obama or Congressional Republicans will do either. The entire political class, which has grown to include the press, the internet, Hollywood, the music industry and God knows who else, thrives on confrontation, the more vitriolic the better. Rachel Maddow sneers at Democrat Evan Bayh for taking seriously the concerns of fiscally conservative Hoosiers, and working with Republicans to restrain just a little government spending that will likely bankrupt the next generation of Americans. She calls him and other Democrats like him, ‘conservadems,’ much like conservative talk show hosts branded John McCain a RINO for objecting to torture or advocating campaign finance reform. Ed Shultz accuses Dick Cheney of hoping for another terrorist attack, and it hardly merits a furrowed brow by the press or any Democrat.
Politicians, pundits and even many beat reporters don’t want more civility in public debates. Because if it were ever to occur, it would leave many of them with nothing much to say, and only swing voters would be happy about that.”

I dunno about some of those as being “decided upon”, as per the CNN poll pointed out in another thread. But I don’t recall any of those being at the forefront of many campaigns.

Wow. A potent trio of quotations.
It seems to me that we need unity here. We need to do what is best for our beloved nation. Reach out and talk to a liberal soon. Talk some sense, talk about debt. We all understand debt, and it’s consequences.
Dr. Manhattan on May 4, 2009 at 10:37 PM
For a long time, news coverage is more about the conflict than putting things into perspective. A ‘good’ reporter who wants to make a name for his or herself will magnify a disagreement rather than dig into the facts. It’s easier and sells papers (the few left that sell) and sells the rest of us short.
The Democrats too, I believe have been much better at the lies and distortions to keep the focus away from real issues. Of course they are aided by a liberal press…

You see, a lot of moderates didn’t like sharing bunkbeds with some of those who are “socially conservative” but were warning about Obama’s spendthrift ways. A lot of these same moderates thought it might be better going for spendthrift Obama rather than sharing the bunkbed with the knuckle-dragging socons. You made your bunkbed, now lie in it.
I’m a little tired of the obligatory hosanna to Obama before saying something negative about him. “I love love love love LOVE him, but his policies SUCK!!!!!!”

Much as I admire Rush, he uses the wrong religious metaphor. Obama is not the Messiah. Obama is the Angel of Debt.
Dr. Charles G. Waugh on May 4, 2009 at 10:46 PM
The pitch is simple:
“Whatever reason you voted for Obama, we can all agree no one sent him to Washington to double down on the debt. You’re not supposed to double down when you’ve already lost the house.”

My 11 year old nephew called Obama ‘Ethelred the Unready’. Totally out of nowehere…it was hilarious especially if you understand the context.
daesleeper on May 4, 2009 at 10:50 PM
Fiscal conservatism is where republicans need to go to get the moderates to side with them instead of hopenchange and the crew of pathological liars (which includes RINOs)
The social stuff like stem cell research, abortion, gay marriage are social issues that the hard left and right want resolved in perpetuity through the courts. It’s not going to happen and the GOP should just recognize this and move on. You cannot successfully legislate morality, so teach it to your kids and leave it out of the courts and law books.
Immigration is a slightly different issue though, it’s already dancing around in the courts because illegals are…wait for it….illegal. (For libs, that means they’re breaking the law, DOH). That should be an issue, as it also ties in well to the fiscal irresponsibility being practiced by our gov’t today.

Amen. But a columnist who made fun of the tea parties, argued this point with me. Although I am paraphrasing he considered the borrowing like seed money. Liberal aren’t right, it’s just not logical.
Cindy Munford on May 4, 2009 at 10:52 PM
The reason this approach is taken, is that it works. It influences a lot of the observers, perhaps a majority. Those who do not have strongly held beliefs change them to be popular. And those who have strongly held beliefs, but cannot risk public ridicule or shunning, for whatever reason, become silent. And those who loudly fight back in ugly ways are then held up to the public as examples of the opposition’s “leaders,” thus further denigrating all those who have opposing views.

His father would be ashamed he’s resorted to straw-man arguments.
Can anyone tell me when was the last time the GOP fought a skirmish over Gay marriage? Last I checked – virtually every single one of the Democratic Presidential nominees were opposed to Gay Marriage – and that includes “The One”.
Can anyone tell me when was the last time the GOP fought a skirmish over stem cell research? Last I checked – President Bush actually FUNDED stem cell research – he just did so in a way that minimized the “offense” to the Pro-Life taxpayers in this country who were also paying for it. Obama came in and just shoved it down their throats. So who had the classier policy? Especially considering the fact that science is starting to tell us that embryonic stem cells aren’t “all that”.
Can anyone tell me when was the last time the GOP fought a skirmish over abortion? Sure – it’s a plank in the platform – one that hasn’t done much. Republican Presidents haven’t used it as a litmus test for SC nominees. In fact – Republican Presidents have appointed PRO CHOICE judges to the SC. Can you name a PRO-LIFE one appointed by Democrat? No? Whoa – those extreme Republicans … I tell ya!
Creationism? Bobby Jindal is my Governor (a very popular Governor) … but we’re not teaching creationism here in Louisiana and there’s really no serious talk of doing so. And by the way – I think only Texas voted stronger AGAINST Obama than Louisiana did. That said – I remember fondly the days when a STATE had the right to make determinations on how it’s schools were run and what was taught in them. And I think Bill Buckley agreed with that aspect of State’s Rights – but not his son.
Pathetic arguments all.
I hope he doesn’t marry Megan McCain – they’re both pretty much air heads living off the fame and work of their fathers – the genetic fallout would be disastrous for the human gene pool.

Obama has been on an out-of-control spending spree from day one – aided and abetted by Democrats. They will bankrupt this country without blinking. Just like the liberal media, who loses money by the bucketful, they stubbornly cling to their elitist world view, matters not that they will bleed this country dry. Ideology trumps the dollar.

Well, in a way, the tone is changed now. Liberals no longer spew vitriolic hatred toward the President. Does Obama really deserve credit for not being maligned by other liberals, though?
JohnJ on May 4, 2009 at 11:18 PM
Actually, the abortion thing, far from being “decided upon,” seems to now have less support, at least for the late-term and more extreme varieties, according to polls.
I’m not terribly wired into that one (though I would agree with the polls that the more extreme or later versions shouldn’t be legal).
Gay marriage, of which I’m even less wired into the outcome, also hasn’t exactly been “decided” – assuming one is going by what most people think.
But I think it is totally ridiculous to let the left decide things are decided simply because they say they are.
And yet – we let them!
Seems to me all they have to do is say something, and wham, it’s then true.
Alana on May 4, 2009 at 11:18 PM
It’s a shame that Chris Buckley was too obtuse to read the writing on the wall when he threw his support behind Barack Obama. What did he think was going to happen? Did these people actually believe his campaign rhetoric? My cynicism pays off, yet again.

izoneguy on May 4, 2009 at 11:42 PM
The Soviets didn’t stop until they’d bled Russia dry, so I see no reason to assume the left will stop until they’ve bled this country dry. A wealth tax is almost certainly going to come to pay for all that spending, along with inflation and, quite simply, a reneging on some of the promises implicit in those entitlement programs.
venividivici on May 4, 2009 at 11:43 PM
I’m sorry but that’s BS. Conservatives don’t want these issues resolved in the courts AT ALL. The Left, on the other hand, is always looking towards the courts to give them what they can’t win at the ballot box.

Christopher Buckley:
One of the oldest rules in politics is: If your opponent is committing suicide, don’t interfere. So were I in charge of the Republican Party, I would send out a coded text message saying: REMAIN CALM. SHUT UP. THIS IS GOING TO BLOW UP IN THEIR FACES.
The problem with this analysis is that the liberals are not committing suicide, they’re committing homicide. When this blows up in their faces, how much of our country will be left?
Loxodonta on May 4, 2009 at 11:54 PM

The left won’t torture KSM. You and I on the other hand…
No, I hear you and my point is more that they’ll rely on us being law-abiding until the point where they’ve co-opted enough of the law enforcement institutions (like they’ve done with the academic institutions) or created their own parallel enforcement mechanisms (Obama’s “civilian force”). It won’t be easy, but that seems like the play they’re making.

heshtesh on May 5, 2009 at 12:04 AM
Oh, come on, Buckley. How blinded are/were you? Elsewhere in your fiscal epiphany you refer to Obama’s “knockout press conference” at his “100 days celebration.” You opine that “we adore Obama.” You gush over the growth of the Dems’ majority in the Senate when “my old pal Al Franken” takes his seat. You believe that principle led Specter to abandon the Republican party by “taking a nobler stand.”
If the Republicans would hammer home the issues of national security, energy independence, fiscal restraint, smaller federal government, and the resultant personal liberty, they would rally the support of the young, minorities, and urban areas; the Northeast and the West. The social areas would be subsumed under those pillars. All social conservatives subscribe to thees issues. Abiding by the Constitution would put the social concerns back in the laps of the states through Amendment X.
BTW It is objection to federal funding of embryonic stem cell research that was the bone of contention. Similarly, it is the objection to amnesty for illegal immigration that created the furor. It is telling that the mockers of conservatives always leave out the critical words.
The media play their implicit role in caricaturing conservatives by primariy casting interview or debate questions to them over social points. The skillful conservative or Republican politician must learn to redirect the conversation back to economics, national interest and secutiry, and liberty. A resurgent Republican party will lead on those points and not be led by a condescending media that want to limit the party’s message.

I saw Chris Wallace’s piece on the spawn of William the Great. Unfortunately, the spawn of William has departed from sanity and Conservatism.
What I shall never understand is the restrictive bars Christopher has placed on his so called intellectual mind. He, along with those on the “Rebranding” tour, have a serious allergy to “We the People”, and our understanding of true mental freedoms. At no juncture, time, occasion, nanosecond or brain fart has Obama ever seriously pondered true American freedoms. The man cannot conduct a press conference, or speak to an audience of any kind without a teleprompter! THAT IS NOT intelligence. Hey Christopher, how about grading the man on relating to the American people and their desires for the nation?
It also would not hurt little Chrissy to pick up the Constitution, Bill of Rights or any American history book published prior to 1950!
To all of us on HA I would like to request some serious prayers for our men and women in the military. On almost every website that is Conservative of any stripe, there are indicators our military is now facing some things they have never encountered in our history. Our military members are the best on the planet. I personally have faith in them, and believe there is nothing they cannot overcome or defeat. In the days to come as we worry about cap and tax, and the thousand other things Obama is doing to this nation; please remember those in our military and their families. We owe them so much. Much love to all of you and hawkdriver out there fighting for our rights, our protection, our freedoms, our families and democracy. Be safe and may God bless you and your families!

re: “torture”, I believe Miss Coulter’s latest column addressed this quite articulately. Myself, as well as countless others stood in tear-gas filled rooms at some point in boot camp and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the fourth verse of the Marine’s Hymn while holding our gas masks at our side or did something equally silly. Let’s see, how about, oh, I don’t know, maybe “caning” the souls of their bare feet until the flesh is ripped off? How about hanging them by their wrists which are pulled up behind their backs until their elbows and shoulders are pulled, ever so slowly, out of the joints? That’s torture, you stupid pansies. Not “unleashing” caterpillars.
re: McCain’s idea of “finance reform”, I can only think the Founding Fathers would have lined up to challenge Senator RINO to a duel to the death over his clumsy rape of the First Amendment.
I guess it’s me, I’m just getting too old to wade through the non-stop flood of imbecilic crap from these people who think they are such brilliant commentators.

• He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
• I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
• Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
• He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
• Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
• Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

Zimbabwe bucks, for one, and that whole Iranian nuclear missile thing.
Or, worst-case scenario, Michelle’s toned arms get flabby.

Well yes the Democrats are all perverted uncle Teds… But I think it means the GOP used to be the responsible adults in politics.
And it is a shame that we can’t count on our Senators or Congressmen to rein in spending! I personally think some time in the wilderness is needed after the spending sprees of the Bush administration…
I wish the country could be put on hold until the GOP gets it’s head on straight. Instead we seem destined to find first hand how horrible it is to live under complete government control.

We need to focus on the larger issues, as in the sustainability of America as a nation. We can worry about the touchy-feel crap once we have our financial fundation in order. What good is fighting over the definition of marriage when your country is gone?

Does anyone seriously think it will be any different if Republicans get control of Congress and the Presidency again? The only difference will be that the porkmeisters have different names.

Well…….
…….. that’s the problem, isn’t it?
Math, supplied side economics, and true American history aren’t taught anymore. It’s all ideology and multiculturalism……..
….. Now we have a generation that lives and votes based on the social engineering ideology of the Marxist/Socialists that have taken over the teacher’s unions and higher academia.
The Leftist “Political Elite Class”, supplied with chauffeured cars, free airplanes, meals, and sweet deals to line their pockets had no problem destroying the American economy starting with the Community Reinvestment Act, as long as they were getting paid………
……. then they “bail out” their buddies who pushed their government imposed junk onto the world markets, collapsing economies and evaporating savings into the Trillions of dollars.
With no accountability as to where any of the money went, you are left with the politicians who print the money, the elite political class who are now tied to them or risk the power of the press, who are also in bed with the Democrats or risk no invitation to the ball…………
……… and waiting in the wings, a legion of programed government bureaucrats freshly educated in the proper ideology for Obama’s America.
Where does that leave the rest of us, you ask……….?
………. Just look around. I don’t know about you, but here in Southern California, thanks to the shared ideology of Obama, our State is rapidly feeling the effects of Socialism.
Stores are closing left and right, people with businesses are leaving, higher taxes result in less revenue for the government as we import the poverty of Mexico, and more and more go on the dole…….
……. The politicians on top live the high life, the middle class is made up of bureaucrats who impose the never ending regulations, then there is the bottom.
“This is math, not ideology.” Yes, but the ideology of the Left is in power, and it is the beginning of the end…………
…….. they just can’t add.

I think it goes back to the traditional sex stereotypes. The conservative “daddies” focus on the logical and practical, while the liberal “mommies” are the emotional carers.

For starters…
Secular bear markets are brutal. As you can see from the graph, we could well be looking at a very difficult period of time if past is indeed prolog.
My earlier point was to simply point out that when insiders are selling in earnest (and the ratio is so markedly biased to one side) that tends to portend a serious decline.

It seems to me that California’s economic and fiscal disaster should be providing a teachable moment for the country: Don’t be like California.
If you combine high taxes, massive debt, and massive bureaucracies, regulations and public employee unions, this equals disaster, sooner or later. Yet, I don’t see this lesson being taught or learned.
I read a post earlier today by Cindy Mumford who wrote that she talked with a liberal about the massive debt agreed upon by Congress, and the liberal stated the borrowing was good because it went to the purchase of starter seeds. All I can think of is that these seeds are going to grow government into that giant carnivorous plant from The Little Shop of Horrors:
