Disgrace: Reason TV on how Obama killed the D.C. vouchers program

posted at 7:40 pm on May 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

Superb stuff, worth forwarding to every conservative (and non-conservative) you know. If Bush had spiked this program, the media would have seen to it that every last kid in this video was nationally famous. As it is, aside from Juan Williams and a few select others, there’s been nary a peep. Someday, many years from now, when the GOP once again figures out how to do oppo research, they’ll be turning out videos like this and rubbing the Democrats’ faces in them instead of relying on outfits like Reason to do it.

Just a reminder: Obama’s proposed budget this year was $3.6 trillion, and yet somehow he couldn’t find $18 million in there to keep this program going. What a travesty. If you’re in D.C., there’s a rally on Wednesday between 1 and 2 p.m. Show up and do your best to try to force the media to cover this. We both know they won’t, but maybe you can at least make them feel guilty for not doing so.

You cannot indoctrinate America’s youth properly under private education voucher programs, you need the great equalizer, a failing public system to really make some headway in the ‘social engineering’ field..

saus on May 4, 2009 at 8:58 PM

I talked to Kanye about this, and the only explanation here is that Barack Obama hates black people.

WisCon on May 4, 2009 at 8:58 PM

POTUS is owned by the unions.

T J Green on May 4, 2009 at 8:59 PM

Won’t hold my breath, but maybe they’ll gain some enlightenment from this. Maybe, just maybe, come 2012 they’ll remember which party truly provided the opportunities and which one robbed them of opportunities.

The GOP needs to run ads with this theme in the midterm elections and again in 2012. Something saying that only an education provides real opportunities. And the Democratic Party robbed the people of an education under Obama.

Given some of the examples of writing I’ve seen coming out of college students, the Public School System has totally given up on teaching and switched to indoctrination.

SeniorD on May 4, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Hey, if the DC public schools are good enough for Obama’s girls, they’re good enough for anybody!

Unions should be outlawed

or atleast, anti-trust laws should be used against them

I know you’re generally only in the business of mocking Glenn Beck, but do you wish to give him credit for being one of those “few select others”?

That girl Mercedes has been on his show by herself at least once or twice, and with her entire family at least one other time.

And these were in depth segments (which is usually the case, on Beck’s show). Did you miss those because you were busy looking for segments that make the man look silly?

I’d be willing to bet that Beck’s program is the only reason anyone, including Reason, even knows about Mercedes and her family.

I can answer their question: Barack Obama is a salesman, a decpetive one at that. He claims to be an independent thinker, but his policies are pretty ideological — government should be making the decision in our lives. He believes government solves our economic woes, not the free market.

Did you guys hear that our “hope and change government” wants to us to payback some of the money in our rebate checks? This is more evidence that Obama feels the best way to lift us out of a recession is to purely grow the size of government.

Obama cannot allow the ladders of education to take people out of poverty. He MUST keep the impoverished without opportunity so he can exploit them. That’s what he lives for, it’s all he knows how to do, and yes, it is intentional.

JustTruth101 on May 4, 2009 at 9:18 PM

I have to laugh when the lady says it’s not about politics. It seems they all voted for Obama and were amongst his most ardent supporters (see last scene), and now they get the political result of their political vote, and claim politics is irrelevant?

Funnier even is the younger woman’s question “WHY?” to Obama… When we tried to explain that he is a Socialist, we were told that that was underhanded. NOW she wants to know WHY Obama is against school choice?

It’s just too funny.

ebrawer on May 4, 2009 at 9:20 PM

It’s hard to give a shit about Obama voters.

Tabris on May 4, 2009 at 8:01 PM

That’s mean spirited… but X 10 for me on that sentiment. All they had to do was look at Obama’s half brother in his 9 foot shack to know Obama doesn’t even care about blood relatives.

Elections have consequences ladies. Next time be a better informed voter.

Hog Wild on May 4, 2009 at 9:25 PM

I’m sure the media will soon be interviewing the parents so we can all hear how these government cuts have devastated families and the aspirations of the children.

The Statists justify massive expenditures in preventative healthcare for the poor but routinely are unwilling to apply the same rationale for school choice.

If pulling the life support on these kids is what it takes to score political points, so be it. Just another group to be sacrificed on the alter of unions and big government.

moxie_neanderthal on May 4, 2009 at 9:26 PM

Call me racist (I’m sure someone will), but this is what happens when you vote for someone based on their skin color as opposed to their actual ideas and convictions. Nevertheless, it’s a shame that this program is being cut. The ideal thing would be for government at all levels to get out of the education business and just let private enterprise pick up the slack.

NoLeftTurn on May 4, 2009 at 9:39 PM

make them feel guilty

Allah, surely you jest. The MSM have a vested interest in the success of The One. They whored themselves to get him elected. They went out of their way not to look at anything in his past. If the event gets covered, it will be by Fox news, not the prostitutes of the MSM.

GarandFan on May 4, 2009 at 9:52 PM

Why? (In answer to the lady’s question):

Because you are a bunch of saps that The One needs to keep voting for him. He doesn’t want you or your kids educated because then you might see what the Dems have done to people of your race over the past 40 year. Besides that, his supporters in the NEA hate competition.

Why? Pretty simple really — you are just votes, not people.

AZfederalist on May 4, 2009 at 10:09 PM

PattyJ on May 4, 2009 at 10:29 PM

The above video and the segment Glenn Beck did on DC vouchers should be required viewing of every 1st – 12th grade parents, students, and teachers!

Shame on the Democrats/Obama for killing the future of these children. Teachers Unions should have to pay matching funds to these Vouchers with the money they give to Democrats!!!

TN Mom on May 4, 2009 at 10:30 PM

I’ve read it a couple of places, but the best idea for this would be the Republicans holding a fundraiser and keeping the voucher program alive without government funding. I’m pretty sure the opposition would find a way to make us feel guilty about being so racist and all, but I still say we should do it!

Pomme143 on May 4, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Pomme143,

Georgia just started a scholarship program for private schools that is funded with private dollars. GOAL Scholarship Unfortunately, it was only a half step as it only applies to kids going from public schools to private schools. If your kid is already in private school than you are out of luck.

My son is currently in private school but we are likely going to have to pull him out for at least a year because I had to take a paycut at my job and wife has been unable to find work. We would be eligible for the program except for the fact that he is currently in private school already.

Regardless though, what Obama and Congress is doing to these families is unconscionable. They are literally taking away their hope.

Queasy on May 4, 2009 at 10:59 PM

If you live in a district with a Democrat representative, or if you have a Democrat senator who’s up for re-election in 2010, HAMMER THE EVER-LOVING S*** OUT OF THEM on this issue.

Make them EXPLAIN to the PEOPLE why Obama’s kids are more worthy of a good education than the children in DC’s lower-income black families.

Bruce in NH on May 4, 2009 at 11:01 PM

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?

Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.

Racist! (Didn’t want to disappoint)

Actually, I agree 100%. These ladies and these kids deserve better, so why didn’t they pay any attention to the positions of the candidates?

O’Bonehead couldn’t have been clearer that no voucher programs will be allowed in his NEA kingdom, and anyone who paid attention to any discussion of education would have seen this.

They used a single-issue, racist litmus test: vote for the black candidate. “Why, sir, why?” That’s why.

Mojave Mark on May 4, 2009 at 11:46 PM

I’m confused why poor kids in DC (the federal government’s backyard) deserved a voucher program, but poor kids in other states don’t.

amkun on May 4, 2009 at 11:53 PM

It’s both funny and sad to watch them talk.

And yet, they’ll not only drink the kool-aid and vote for Obama. They’ll do it in 2012 without even spending one second to look at the school choice pushed by the GOP candidate.

To the plantation…forever.

Yeah, but Allah is in the business of only searching for clips of Beck that will embarrass him, rather than pointing out how much of the news he’s reporting that no one else will. fred5678 on May 5, 2009 at 12:38 AM

There seems to be a word that is not used once in this entire video. This word can go a long way toward answering her question. And that word is “union”. It is what conservatives have been yelling from the roof tops for years and somehow these women decided not to listen. They elected Obama, they believed him, they trusted this inexperienced rookie, they walked for him, they yelled out the car window for him. They got change they can believe in. My sympathy factor for them is zero.

Dollayo on May 5, 2009 at 2:27 AM

I really don’t feel too bad for these parents, they voted based on skin color. It is time for these parents to stand up and tell everyone that they made a mistake.

It’s all about the unions for this pres.

BTW he’s an assclown!

Frances on May 5, 2009 at 5:55 AM

In the Obamanation, schools are life support systems for unions and the machinery of political indoctrination. The relevance of children and the quality of education is tangential, at best. Here’s proof positive.

Closing this program is so brazen and disgraceful that I thought maybe they wouldn’t do it. If we had any kind of a party, the GOP would be showcasing this non-stop.

I’m scared. Reason Magazine seems to be making more and more sense. Am I going to have to start smoking weed soon?

Kevin M on May 5, 2009 at 7:34 AM

It’s not that they couldn’t find the money to continue the program. Rather, they were repaying the teacher’s union for it’s support.

MarkTheGreat on May 5, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Yeah, these folks supported Obama and look what happened. Parliament Funkadelic released an album called AMERICA EATS ITS YOUNG. It most likely meant something else for them, but to me it represents what’as going on with the American public school system. If Obama and the teacher’s unions couldn’t stomach 1700 measly kids being out of the system, you know they want all of our children as well. And when will Black folks realize that they’re being screwed by these damned beasts? The sad thing about this story is that the featured family would STILL vote for this MANIAC.

squasquashi on May 5, 2009 at 9:35 AM

D.c. is a lousy school system. They are a very high percentage black. The kids doing vouchers were found to improve a lot. Washington cost per pupil was outrageously high and it saved a lot of money giving vouchers.
The bottom line is money could go to non union teachers and the statists would risk control of the little sheeple.

seven on May 5, 2009 at 9:40 AM

Elections have consequences. You “fought for him, marched for him, stood in the rain for him”. Good. Maybe next time you’ll educate yourselves before you doom the rest of us to suffer for your stupidity. Enjoy, Obamorons.

quikstrike98 on May 5, 2009 at 9:45 AM

Obama is not about stronger country, better education, whatever-he is about social justice-lower taxes produce higher revenues-he will have nothing of that- whats more important, is that rich pay more. Voucher program produces better results at lower cost-he will have nothing of that-everyone has to have the same education. Of cause elite excluded from that, or paying taxes.

anikol on May 5, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Obama really is a union puppet.

John on May 5, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Let’s get real here. Obama and the Democrats don’t want ANY childen to be educated anywhere other than the indoctrination program they call “the public school system”. Secondly, he doesn’t want anyone who isn’t a member of the teachers union around our kids either.
