Obama uses WH press corps as threat against Chrysler investors; Update: Tapper reports, WH denies
posted at 11:15 am on May 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
An attorney representing several Chrysler bondholders accused the Obama administration of intimidating his clients by issuing threats of public humiliation if they opposed their brokered deal to resolve the automaker’s debts. Speaking to WJR, Thomas Lauria said that the White House called the bondholders “vultures” for insisting on their rights as senior creditors and told them that the Obama administration would use the White House press corps to attack them in the media. Corky Boyd has the transcript (also via HA reader Geoff A):
Lauria: Let me tell you it’s no fun standing on this side of the fence opposing the President of the United States. In fact, let me just say, people have asked me who I represent. That’s a moving target. I can tell you for sure that I represent one less investor today than I represented yesterday. One of my clients was directly threatened by the White House and in essence compelled to withdraw its opposition to the deal under the threat that the full force of the White House Press Corps would destroy its reputation if it continued to fight. That’s how hard it is to stand on this side of the fence.
Beckman: Was that Perella Weinberg?
Lauria: That was Perella Weinberg.
Glenn Reynolds wonders how the White House press corps will feel about being used as an arm of the administration to beat its opposition into submission. My guess? Enchanted, with just a couple of exceptions. He also wonders whether they will show the slightest inclination to ask about these allegations. So far, it looks like the Sounds of Silence on the WHPC dial rather than We’re Not Gonna Take It.
Bear in mind that this is one attorney operating in his client’s interest, and attorneys do like to make media waves by fighting cases on the evening news and the front page before they fight them in court. However, the WHPC should be asking whether they’re getting played by the Obama administration — and consider the strong possibility that they’ve allowed themselves to be put in that position.
Update: Jake Tapper reports the allegations and wants an answer from the White House:
A leading bankruptcy attorney representing hedge funds and money managers told ABC News Saturday that Steve Rattner, the leader of the Obama administration’s Auto Industry Task Force, threatened one of the firms, an investment bank, that if it continued to oppose the administration’s Chrysler bankruptcy plan, the White House would use the White House press corps to destroy its reputation.
Thomas Lauria, Global Practice Head of the Financial Restructuring and Insolvency Group at White & Case, told ABC News that Rattner suggested to an official of the boutique investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners that officials of the Obama White House would embarrass the firm for opposing the Obama administration plan, which President Obama announced Thursday, and which requires creditors to accept roughly 29 cents on the dollar for an estimated $6.8 billion owed by Chrysler.
Lauria first told the story, without naming Rattner, to Frank Beckmann on Detroit’s WJR-AM radio.
The White House now denies the allegations, claiming that there’s no evidence of it (via Geoff A):
The White House said the story was false.
“The charge is completely untrue,” said White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton, “and there’s obviously no evidence to suggest that this happened in any way.”
No evidence? What about Lauria’s personal testimony?
Meanwhile, Tommy Christopher — who actually reports from the White House — dismisses the charge:
As far as the “threat” Lauria alleges, it sounds an awful lot like someone told his client that public opinion would not likely be favorable to people who would obstruct a fair deal to save Chrysler. That’s not a threat, it is a reality. It’s no more a “threat” than John McCain’s campaign promise to make earmarkers “famous.”
Apples and oranges. McCain threatened to make public officials “famous” for wasting taxpayer money. The Obama administration allegedly threatened to use the WHPC to destroy the reputations of private citizens as a punishment for not relinquishing their contractual rights for having helped float Chrysler. There’s a huge difference between the two.

Obama is a dirty scumbag.
My favorite recent anecdote showing the ties of this administration to the street gang of liberal Dem punks that runs Chicago is that Obama’s pathetic $100mm “spending cut” came right around the same time of Todd Stroger’s .25% tax cut proposal in Cook County.
Raise taxes 2%, lower them .25%.
Increase spending by $3 Trillion, lower it by $100 Million.
Chicago – they think you’re stupid.

Or – “It’s a city where the world’s races, and religions, and nationalities all live and work and play and reach for the American Dream that brought them here; where our civic parades wave the colors of every culture; where our classrooms are filled with the sounds of the world’s languages; and where jazz and rancheras and bhangra can be heard down the street from one another.”

Nixon DID NOT lie under oath. He did not order the Watergate break-in. But once told of the burglary, tried to cover any involvement from the White House that had not ordered it to happen.
I correct myself.
Nixon resigned rather than be “impeached” which by Clinton’s experience lying under oath and being impeached didn’t much matter to the public, anyway.
Since impeachment is a mere formality to be disregarded these days, at least give us the formality since that’s not asking for much.
OBAMA wants to dismiss the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Nothing less will do for his Socialist pyramid scheme monopoly game.

I caught a BBC news show a few weeks back about the economy woes in Europe. They were interviewing FIAT employees who were being laid off, and were pissed that their company was being forced into a deal with Chrysler.
WTF?
Also, why is it that the White House announce Chrysler’s financial decision? At least from my aspect, it seemed like the White House had taken over all aspects of the business.

The White House Press Kittens must be outraged that the Administration feels so confident that they will comply with any request that they can actually threaten to use them to destroy a private individual.
This threat reveals that the Administration believes the White House Press Kittens to be completely tame, and that they will do whatever they are told, instead of an independent and probing group of investigative reporters.
So, Kitties? What do you think about that?
And what are you going to do about it?

This is the single, most disturbing aspect of this junta. It’s not just that they lie, but they insult our intelligence by telling the most transparent, bald-faced lies possible. They shock the conscience with the idiocy of their words. That bowing example was but one of many such obvious lies, that are even enshrined on video for eternity. It is stunning, and chilling. If the press accepts this, then there are no longer any tethers to reality to control these people. Even Clinton used to strain to make his lies as believable as possible. These people don’t bother. They just say anything, no matter how ridiculous.
I don’t really know how any society recovers from such a schizophrenic break with reality in its public discourse and policy – other than through a very difficult path. The abuse of confidence taints everyone and everything around it – institutions, most of all.

This is our Obama lied economy died moment.
One thing conservatives do is wait for someone, the media, the politician , the mythical hero to take them out of the mess.
The progressives, they do thing themselves. I closely follow Gov.Palin’s career at C4P. You know what the progressives did the minute Palin candidacy was announced. One of them threw a party, they got together, swore oaths of secrecy and they started targeting Palin with conspiracy theories and ethtics complaints. They organized.
Why shouldn’t we do the same. I am an armchair dreamer. I’ve never done anything like this before and I am not sure I am the right person. I just read blogs, get mad and go to sleep. But enough. This can’t be happening and allowed to go further. We have to take a stand.
We have to organize too.
The tea parties were a sight to behold but they’ve dissipated without coalescing into a movement. We all share a common philosophy but we need to focus on a few practical goals and outcomes and start kicking butt.
I don’t know how we’re gonna do it but we need to figure out a way. We cannot let freedom wither away simply by default.

Eighteen national leaders of the Tea Party protest movement, which has drawn the participation of hundreds of thousands of Americans over the past few weeks, today responded to President Barack Obama’s invitation to meet with members of the Tea Party movement to discuss solutions to the nation’s fiscal challenges.
Speaking at a townhall meeting in Arnold, Missouri this past Wednesday, Obama said: “So, you know, when you see — those of you who are watching certain news channels on which I’m not very popular and you see folks waving tea bags around, let me just remind them that I am happy to have a serious conversation about how we are going to cut our health care costs down over the long term, how we’re going to stabilize Social Security.”
The national leadership team of the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition, one of several organizations that form the grassroots ecosystem of the Tea Party movement, this afternoon faxed a letter to the White House accepting the President’s invitation for such a discussion. “The Tea Party movement has grown because millions of Americans believe the government is heading in the wrong direction and their government is not only not listening to them, but ignoring them. We need to have a serious, public discussion of these issues. We are ready to have that discussion with you and look forward to your response,” the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition leaders wrote in their letter to Obama.
Calling Obama’s bluff; priceless…
The Tea Party organizers will stand up to this punk. Why can’t we get a single Republican politician to do the same?
Wussies…
