Breaking: Jack Kemp, RIP
posted at 10:47 pm on May 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Former VP candidate, Congressman, and conservative stalwart Jack Kemp died today at age 73:
Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described “bleeding-heart conservative” died Saturday.
His spokeswoman Bona Park and longtime friend and former campaign adviser Edwin J. Feulner confirmed that Kemp died after a lengthy illness.
Kemp had announced in January 2009 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was undergoing tests but gave no other detail.
Thank you, sir, for a life of service. Our prayers go out to his family for their loss.
Update: American Spectator on the importance of Jack Kemp, from January of this year:
“When you tax something you get less of it, and when you reward something you get more of it.”
With that simple exhortation — and this is a man born to exhort — Jack Kemp changed his party, changed his country and, ultimately, changed the world.
He had some help, of course. Ronald Reagan, notably. Robert Bartley and the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal. The late Jude Wanniski, one-time member of the WSJ board and author of The Way the World Works. Arthur Laffer, he of the famous Laffer Curve. Others. A number of distinguished others.
Yet for an idea to revolutionize the way the world thinks and works, in the American system it helps if one holds elective or appointed office. Elected as a Congressman from the unlikely world-changing precincts of Buffalo, New York, where he had come to fame as the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, Kemp evolved into the enthusiastic godfather of what became known as “Reaganomics.” or, in its other, equally familiar designation, “supply-side” economics.
Kemp had the courage to move beyond the usual issues for conservatives, choosing to work on poverty and housing issues, and challenging his fellow conservatives to make conservatism work across the board. It’s one of the reasons why Kemp will be missed.

Sad news. Dole-Kemp might have been not an ideal ticket in ’96, but how much better off we would have been had they won.

He was a great man, someone to aspire to.

Mr. Kemp was a longtime personal hero. May he rest in peace, and may the peace that passeth all understanding be with his family and loved ones.

I had no idea he was even ill.
God bless you sir and your family.

This is a true loss. Jack Kemp was a mensch who always had some ideas kicking around and was great at articulating them. I enjoyed listening to him. He will be missed.
My condolences to the Kemp family. This is a sad day.

So sad, such a wonderful man. I just went to Dr. Bennett’s site to include him in my prayers. He will be missed.

Anyone check out the celebrations at DailyKos of HuffPo?
I don`t know if they`re even going on, haven`t been and won`t go to them.
But you know they`ll be dancing in the streets.

Kemp could earn respect from people across the political spectrum. By the way, this is from Jake Tapper:

RIP to Mr Kemp and prayers for his family, but why would the loony left be “dancing in the streets”? Kemp very much angered me once when interviewed and the host said something along the likes of “you’re not the typical close minded bigoted angry Republican” to which Kemp replied “Well, thanks, I try to……”

Major tears falling right now.
Jack Kemp was my political hero. I heard him speak in college and he converted me to supply-side economics on the spot. Later I was lucky enough to have worked for him at HUD briefly. My photo with him still holds a prize spot on every office wall I have.
God bless Jack Kemp.

I was a big fan of Mr Kemp and voted for him in 1988.
Felt his veiws on economic issues were terrific.
He knew that Government didnt end poverty it only subsidized it. We in this nation pay people to be poor and keep them poor.
That isnt compassionate and it isnt what works. Kemp knew that allowing people to succeed was more important than catering to some people unwillingness to acheive.
God Bless him and His family.
William Amos on May 2, 2009 at 11:20 PM
I remember years ago watching on CSPAN, Jack Kemp speaking to a room of African Americans. He thundered on about Free Market Capitalism and American Exceptionalism. At the end of his speech, they gave him a standing ovation. This wasn’t a crowd that came in the room wanting to be moved by him. They were. Never heard anyone who loved this country more than Jack. God speed.

DU is actually being quite respectful. I’m surprised. But, it’s good to know that the other side can stop and honor a great man when he passes.

I met him in Oct of 96 when he was running with Dole–a reward for my yeoman work in a Lost Cause. I still have my “Jack’s Back” t-shirt with his number 15
He was a Whig, and never connected with social cons; without that connection, he never got further than Congressman and the lower end of a losing ticket.

Why do I suspect Tim Russert was there to greet him at the pearly gates with a big ol’ welcoming smile and firm handshake? What a happy reunion that must be. All the camraderie of two stalwart Buffalonians with none of the partisanship.
RIP, Mr. Kemp.

Jack Kemp (1935-2009)
God of all consolation,
in Your unending love and mercy for us,
you turn the darkness of death
into the dawn of new life.
Show compassion to the family and friends of Jack Kemp in their sorrow.
Be their refuge and their strength
to lift them from the darkness of their grief
to the peace and light of Your presence.
†
Amen.

Psalm 23 for Jack Kemp
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul;
he leadeth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff
they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the
presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup Runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord forever.
Deus vobiscum – Rest In Peace

Wow..
As a life long Bills fan I remember him as a Bill, then watched his political career take off when living in Western NY as a kid.
Odd thing to me is I thought I saw a picture of him on some totally unrelated story on Fox News Friday night.
Then I remembered hearing about back in January he had Cancer, but never heard any more about how he was doing.
I’m sure Tim Russert is waiting for him at the big “Rockpile” in the sky..
(Rockpile was the nickname of Buffalo’s old War Memorial stadium)

Odd. Drudge has been off his game for a long time now.

I doubt it’ll ever happen, but President Obama could do himself, and his legacy, a lot of good by asking himself every morning, “what would Jack Kemp do?,” and then doing that.

I missed an opportunity to meet him and hear him speak in person roughly a year and a half ago(might have been longer); I was scheduled to sing at an event where he was the speaker. I was hoping such an event would come up again, to have another chance, but it was not to be.
His family will be in my prayers. May he rest in peace.
