Video: Dennis Miller on Obama and Tea Parties

posted at 10:55 am on May 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Dennis Miller works himself into a fine lather over Barack Obama’s dismissive attitude towards Tea Party protests on last night’s O’Reilly Factor. In a 2-minute rant, Miller notes that Obama seems more concerned with the feelings of pigs than with some American voters:

Memo to Miller: Good rant, but I think Tea Party attendees would prefer not to be called “Tea Bag People.” That’s been the Rachel Maddow/Anderson Cooper meme.

As for growing “rhino skin,” I know exactly what Miller means. Free-market conservatives get plenty of derision from mainstream media, and portrayals of conservatives in popular media range from idiots to villains. I think Obama and the Left want to produce RINO skin, but we’ll see who’s more successful in the next couple of years.

Obama’s shtick is so tired. Notice how he made his stupid comment about Fox News and paused. A freakin’ LAUGH LINE from the President of the United States of America, folks.

What was more embarrassing was how, as no one laughed, he swirled around, looking for just one person to even smile. President Letterman.

I admire Dennis for “getting it” later in life than some. If only more entertainers would wake up the way he did after 9/11 we would live in a much better world.

gsherin on May 1, 2009 at 11:09 AM

The only thing “thick” on President Obama is his skull.
Even common sense can’t penetrate it.

elderberry on May 1, 2009 at 11:09 AM

I have a Master’s degree. I’ve traveled the world. I enjoy classical music. I am a published writer. I can talk “Ivy League.” I’m not boasting here, just trying to correct Miller’s skewed image of the tea-bag protester as a gum-flappin’, weed chewin’ rube.

He didn’t mean it that way and I enjoyed and appreciated his rant, but the elitism is a disease which the infected never realize is in them.

Anybody ever read Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death.” It applies here.

MaxMBJ on May 1, 2009 at 11:11 AM

Dennis Miller works himself into a fine lather

Hey, Miller knows how to lather, but this response is not over the top as Miller maintains a respective tone of voice and does not season his message with any spite or cruelty.

Obama thinks he is the coolest kid ever.

Americans think Obama gives them a cold shoulder, and treats his opposition with a cold heart.

Obama doesn’t make any effort to qualm that image. In fact, Obama revels in the mean spirit towards Americans and our allies, and the lovey dovey attitude with our nation’s foes.

I hope that Obama’s arrogance will eventually be his undoing. I think he underestimates the Average American.

I love Dennis. The thinking woman’s sex symbol. His 9/11 epiphany was shared by many, including me.

JAM on May 1, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Good point amkun. I have no problem with a President using humor when discussing issues. However, I do have a problem with a President deriding some part of the private sector, targeting individuals, or citizens. A statesman would be above that level of pettiness.

What we have is a man with a case of arrested development and thin skin. This could get very nasty.

I think Dennis’s raw emotion overpowered his otherwise cool dissemenation of facts and obscure refrences. The man’s mind is amazing. A decent rant.

daesleeper on May 1, 2009 at 11:13 AM

I think he said “tea bag people” to show how dismissive Pres Obama was being, not actually applying the term to us protesters from his point of view, just a thought.

He is a false “cool guy”. He got where he is because of the color of his skin and he knows NOT to try to act ghetto, and he can’t do that either. He’s a Urkell. Do you actually think the rich kids at Harvard DIDN’T know he got in because of affirmative action?

Come on. He screwed one of their white friends to get in, and they still felt the need to let a “brotha” hang with them so they felt good about themselves.

It’s the same when we get a minority come in as a boss for the day at work…he gets no respect. He got there because of a quota.

“And his wife wears $500 sneakers.”

There’s a phrase for that, but I’d get banned, because it’s about the first wook…whoopsie!!! I mean Michelle Obama.

But it’d be okay if we called Sarah Palin something similar.

LtE126 on May 1, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Obama is about as thin-skinned as they come. He does not brook criticism and disagreement with his POV very well. Witness his verbal abuse of the Chrysler creditors who wanted to get a fair shake for their investors. The Obama gambit is to call anyone who disagrees with his policies “un-American” or “unpatriotic.” Miller needs to recruit more of the conservative entertainment crowd, few in numbers though they may be, to speak out against an obvious campaign of false accusations and smear tactics against Americans who dare to speak in favor of limited government and fiscal responsibility.

College Prof on May 1, 2009 at 11:23 AM

I think when Dennis said “Tea Bag People” he was using the word “people” in its normal sense. He sees the people involved in the protests as people–nothing more, nothing less.

angelwing34215 on May 1, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Exactly. Miller talks towards the socialist elitists simultaneously with moderates and conservatives. He is an equal opportunity basher of stupidity. That’s his point of having thick skin, rhino or RINO is beside his point; that’s for nitpickers to preen over. Miller’s talking about the thick skin Palin proved during the campaign, and that Wurzelbach has shown. Together, OUR POINT to Obama is that we are not going away no matter what; we are not disappearing into the woodwork during his presidency.

maverick muse on May 1, 2009 at 11:25 AM

He’s easy. An easy reach. If he walked into the firehouse we’d have him in a straitjacket in less than half an hour. We’d have him in tears.

LtE126 on May 1, 2009 at 11:26 AM

Give them hell Dennis. The elitist left lacks the ability to compose an intelligent rebuttal and therefore must always revert to destructive and demeaning putdowns. We must remember that “elitist” has no positive correlation to “intellect” when referring to the left and their ilk.

rplat on May 1, 2009 at 11:26 AM

I’m not frustrated with Meghan McCain as much as her old man. She is young, he is an old man who should know better. I see no point in making friends with poll driven people who only want to play on the winning team. Miller is like O’Reilly, he sees himself as above politics. To view one’s self above politics is as dangerous and destructive as it is ignorant.

Listen to Miller if you will, but he is not someone you can expect to do any heavy lifting.

He clearly prefers the welfare class to the achiever class even though he is an achiever. I think deep down he feels the key to his achievement is his race.

Most prior black politicians like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton speak like they are fresh out of the hood. Obama speaks like a Harvard man. America was hungy to support a black politician, and obama was the first one to speak like a normal WASP.

Words are the tools of thought, and the Jessie Jacksons of the world telegraphed what goes on in their heads, and it sounds like the hood.

Obama sounds like a thoughtful achiever, but reverand Wright and Angela Davis are still front and center in his actions.

I heard McCain on “Hannity” say that waterboarding is torture. Like I’ve said before, McCain is the one that popularized this nonsense anti-torture movement. Of course torture is wrong, however waterboarding is NOT torture nor does the US ever torture.
McCain is a menace in the senate and to the republican party.

As for Miller, he is absolutely right. Obama is an arrogant manchild that dishes it out, but can’t take it in.

jencab on May 1, 2009 at 11:41 AM

“Tea bag People” was not literal, but a sarcastic knock on those like Maddow, Olby, etc. who freely use the term.

Have you ever heard him before???

As an organizer of a local Tea Party group, I think it’s great that we’ve gotten under zero’s thin skin.

The problem we’re having right now, is with the endorsement of Fox News. Now, as much as I love Fox News, I don’t think that they should insert themselves into our movement because they’re really not welcome. Those serving in any governmental capacity are also not welcome to speak at our rallies. They are invited to come, sit, and listen. But, they are not, and will not be asked to speak.

Our group is struggling with how we will amicably divorce ourselves from the Fox News peeps. We want media coverage, but we don’t need media endorsements.

Key dates to watch: Memorial Day Weekend. July 4th. September 12th.

We are strong, focused, organized and ready to roll. If anyone at Fox News is reading this? Please, just give us coverage. We don’t need your endorsement.

Thank you, Thank you very much.

Oreilly’s point at the end of this video is so important.

Not one person has said ‘NO’ to Barack Obama in 6 years. Prior to that he had his teaching gig at the University of Chicago CREATED just for him. His chairmanship of the Illinois Senate committee on public health? Created for him by Senate President Emil Jones. The chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge? Created for him by Bill Ayers.

This is going to be a huge problem over the next 13 100 day cycles.

Fox News is a business, not an ideology. They adopted the anti-Obama mantle (I mean, they’re fair and balanced) and their ratings have skyrocketed since the Inauguration. Tea Party support and coverage gave them incredibly good ratings.

Pres Urkel will always treat those who oppose his Marxist agenda with complete and utter disdain. With them he is “dismissive, derisive”, knowing his ace in the hole is the 20 million illegal aliens he and the Demoncrats will be granting amnesty to. The voting welfare class is soon to grow instantaneously in geometric proportions.
Achiever class, be prepared to be marginalized!

Overstating the obvious, but that’s a huge block of votes that will ensure a Demoncrat lock in DC for the forseeable future. It will also mean the demise of the two party system that has stood us well for two centuries.

One of our few hopes to turn back this Obominable red tide is for the achiever class to join the Tea Party Movement in increasingly huge numbers. Will that ever happen? Maybe the July 4th turnout will give us a hint.

Urkel’s betting “no”.

you’ll be on your way to communicating like an adult.

capitalist piglet on May 1, 2009 at 12:07 PM

I’m an adult….but I’m in this demographic.

I’ve been troubled in recent months when discussing the issue of young voters with some fellow Republicans. There seems to be a sort of conventional wisdom that we should expect young voters to trend liberal and Democratic, that the behavior of young voters in 2008 is not serious cause for concern. This stems from a belief in partisanship as a life-cycle factor, that voters start liberal and Democratic and wind up older, conservative, and Republican. But the data paint a very different picture. Take the graph of partisan identification for instance; over the last few decades, young voters have not identified with the Democratic party in substantially higher numbers than voters overall. Even conservatism had its moment among young voters in the 1980′s. Yet with the end of the Reagan presidency, young voters shifted toward liberalism. This ideological shift did not play out into actual partisan identification in a meaningful way until 2006 and 2008.

Consider..I voted for Bush in 2004.
I cannot imagine a scenario at this point that I would ever vote a candidate from the Torture Apologia Party, the Teabagger Party, the Insane Clown Party again.
A tribe without reps cannot survive.

Little boy, get better material you dolt.

You didn’t vote for Bush in 2004 because you are an idiot liberal troll and you were 12 in 2004.

Odie1941 on May 1, 2009 at 12:21 PM

strange voted for Ben Dover and Kismye Arse!

Sweet_Thang on May 1, 2009 at 12:22 PM

You are going to have to learn to make fun of yourselves…otherwise others will do it for you.
Sorry, thass just the way it is.

Yeah, that and be bi-partisan, go for the middle and stand for nothing, STHU.

You DNC Astroturfers really have to revise you seminar training manual. The, “I voted for Bush,” and “I am/was a Republican/Conservative” lines were outed like 10 years ago. It’s a dead giveaway. Why do you imbeciles think it works?

“Hi, [insert talk show host name here] I am a [Republican/Conservative] and I voted for [Insert Republican name here] and I am really disappointed. [insert appropriate issues here].”

TheBigOldDog on May 1, 2009 at 12:25 PM

I think Obama and the Left want to produce RINO skin, but we’ll see who’s more successful in the next couple of years.

The Democrats have far bigger fish to fry. You’ll see socialist healthcare this year. Within 90 days, Uncle Sam and the UAW will own about 90% each of Chrysler and GM. Uncle Sam already owns a bunch of major banks.

This is damage that cannot be undone. We are becoming France. A damn shame.

I voted for Bush.
Read my old blog.
I couldn’t believe that we made torture a policy until my nose was rubbed in the truth.
Now I think Bush and Cheney should either curl up and die of shame, or fall on their dishonored swords.

strangelet on May 1, 2009 at 12:30 PM

Obama’s shtick is so tired. Notice how he made his stupid comment about Fox News and paused. A freakin’ LAUGH LINE from the President of the United States of America, folks.

Yes! I noticed that! Was thinking about bringing it up myself.

Good rant from Dennis Miller.

I tell you what – think about what happens to bullies. People (including myself) don’t like being ridiculed for our beliefs, particularly on something as mundane as government spending, as if we have no right to object to it; and particularly not by the President.

I felt the same way as Dennis Miller about Joe the Plumber, but we were all ridiculed for that. In other words, they will ridicule you, then ridicule you for not liking it. “They” including, and led by, the president himself.

Think about what happens when that goes on too long. When the government holds up its own citizens to ridicule.

Tea Party support and coverage gave them incredibly good ratings.

YYZ on May 1, 2009 at 12:05 PM

But don’t you see? The Tea Party Movement consists of We The People. We The People are eyeing term limits, responsible spending (think! Your own budget), and we could give a rat’s a$$ about what any news outlet earns. For any news outlet to profit off the sweat of our backs earns them a position in the WH with Mister Zero credibility.

Our genuine concern is to protect and defend our Constitution which has been raped, repeatedly, since the end of Bush’s term and into Obama’s term. We cannot spend our way out of debt. We must be responsible. Career politicians will be voted out in droves… both parties. We have no allegiance but to ourselves.

Trust me. We will be heard.

To Thine Ownself Be True.

You, sir (or madam), are the “eminently mockable” one! How you can characterize the mean-spirited political hack jobs by the MSM on Sarah as “fun” “humor” is beyond human comprehension.

And, please, knock off the cutsie pre-teen texting lingo — “hella funnie”, “thass”, “tards” — it only makes you look even more ridiculous.

Well gees your life is over since it was rubbed in your face after voting for someone that YOU MADE A MISTAKE. Its someone elses fault and now you need a scapegoat. Go for it.
You are a trip. People do not change their personal ideologies like they change their panties. If thats where you are and loyalty or improvement on solid conservative values mean nothing to you, then go. Feel free to vote for whomever you want, but dont come here and think that everyone is as disloyal or disgruntled as you are.

There’s rhinos and there’s RINOs. There’s a big difference.

I think.

The Republican Party is at one of our lowest electoral points. I welcome anyone willing to lend a hand with the lifting.

Cindy Munford on May 1, 2009 at 11:33 AM

He is a decent human and that should be worth a lot.

Indeed.

Loxodonta on May 1, 2009 at 11:44 AM

A decent person. Is that to imply that liberals are not decent people? I doubt that is what you intended. My larger point is that without guiding principles a politician doesn’t know what to oppose or support and utterly lacking in direction. Miller supported the war on terror. Good on him. Other than that I cannot recall Miller or the McCains staking out a single unpopular position. Now, McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts, drilling in ANWR, and co-sponsored cap and trade with Lieberman, campaign finance reform with Feingold, and amnesty with Kennedy. These are specific positions on specific issues at odds with the Republican base. The base will not support these positions and will not support McCain. I’m still convinced McCain is a Soros plant ever since he attended the Soros sponsored Shadow Convention in 2000. Look it up.

Issues matter. Miller, McCain, and Steele are the problem, not the solution. Republicans will continue to lose until they return to representing base issues and forget how they are viewed in the press.

Miller is trying to build an audience and is afraid to offend. Rush built an audience because he was not afraid to offend. The Republican Party is rudderless because of people like Miller, McCain and Steele. McCain and Steele and to a lesser degree Miller are uncomfortable with the base. The base should not be tossed aside or taken for granted if Republicans want to win . . . ever.

Angry Dumbo on May 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Been a Limbaugh 24/7 subscriber almost since its inception. Honestly compels me to admit that Dennis Miller has the most entertaining radio show going. I can say that with a bit of ammo since I sit at my desk job every day & listen to the podcasts of both previous days’ shows. Rush is the best of all time & the king, but Miller’s SHOW is more entertaining, probably because he doesn’t spend all 3 hrs discussing politics.

Give Denny a shot, if you haven’t listened. We need more of him.

rjwest21 on May 1, 2009 at 12:45 PM

Oh, please. The party is in trouble because Bush & the GOP congress spent us into oblivion and waited too long to implement the surge, which gave the Dems plenty of ammo to use during campaigns.

Angry Dumbo on May 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Wait, what? Have you ever listened to Miller? He doesn’t pull punches.

“The base” is a buzz word and means a million different things to a million different people. Miller is the kind of guy we want on our side. McCain et al, well, you can keep ‘em (but you don’t want them, either).

amkun on May 1, 2009 at 12:53 PM

Angry Dumbo on May 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM

I can’t link Miller with McCain and Steele. Miller is an entertainer who is going out on a limb in his sphere to admit to any conservative values. McCain and Steele on the other hand were elected by constituents or party members to represent stated beliefs to garner the votes that put them in their respective jobs. But I will agree with you that McCain and possibly Steele have not proven to be truth in advertising.

Angry Dumbo on May 1, 2009 at 12:44 PM

You are mighty hard on Miller. Somehow refusing to grant him his own views and passion. Why? Why do you doubt his sincerity? Just because he’s an entertainer?

The leftist entertainers are certainly sincere enough about their views.

The offense thing . . . well, I just can’t get around that notion. Miller is afraid to offend, but the leftist entertainers aren’t? That just makes no sense.

As for “heavy lifting,” what do you expect him to do? More to the point, how do you know what he does do when he’s not on stage?

When an entertainer uses the stage to promote a political stance, that is heavy lifting. When a writer uses the page to promote a political stance, that is heavy lifting. For either side.

Are you saying you think he should run for office?

Exactly. They were thrown out because they didn’t bother living up to their own principles. They were thrown out becuase they:
1) tried to shove Open Borders down our throats
2) Pork barreled and spent like drunken sailors
3) Didn’t get Iraq under control quickly enough
4) Oil skyrocketed and collapsed the economy
5) Allowed the Left to frame very issue
