PETA’s Newest Spokesman?
posted at 5:35 pm on May 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
What does PETA look for in a celebrity spokesperson? Someone famous, of course. Well-liked. Respected. An established, loyal fan base who want to emulate their idol. It helps if that person has a public track record of interaction with animals.
So what could go wrong with this?
Michael Vick is in talks to become the new spokesman for PETA.
Yes, you read that correctly. The disgraced one-time NFL superstar serving prison time for funding an illegal dog-fighting ring is primed to do public-service ads for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upon his release later this month. According to three people with knowledge of the matter, the proposed endorsement is part of a comprehensive PR scheme aimed at rehabilitating the quarterback’s image and gaining him readmission to the league that banned him from playing.
“I’m familiar with [the plan],” said Dan Shannon, director of youth outreach and campaigns for PETA. “We have been in discussions with Michael Vick, with his management team, about the possibility of him putting out a public-service announcement with PETA when he’s out of jail. We want him to discourage people from taking part in dog-fighting. I can do it until I’m blue in the face and it might not convince anybody. Michael Vick sure can. He can say, ‘Look, I did it, I was wrong, and it ruined my career.’”
My first reaction was bwa-hahahahaha … until I realized they were serious. Michael Vick as a spokesman for PETA? Isn’t that like having Jeffrey Dahmer doing spots for vegetarianism? Jack Abramoff doing PSAs for ethics in government? Richard Nixon flacking for Memorex?
Simon at Deceiver notes that Vick has less-than-altruistic motives for his proposal:
Just a few months ago, PETA withdrew its previous offer to make Vicks a spokesman, because in exchange he wanted their support for his return to the NFL. Not only did they balk at that, but they demanded that he undergo a brain scan and psychotherapy to determine whether he’s even crazier than Ingrid Newkirk. …
Seems like a perfect match. But can pretending to be sorry, on behalf of a group that’s killed way more pets than he ever did, resurrect that career?
I thought Simon was exaggerating about the brain scan. Not at all:
Citing a recent government report that listed several instances where Vick was personally involved in the cruelty and killing of dogs, PETA wants Vick to undergo extensive psychological testing.
Nachminovitch continued, “We believe that the behavior he has shown might very well be an indication of psychopathy and we’re asking for a brain scan and a thorough psychiatric evaluation.”
The people at PETA considering Vick as their spokesman should queue up right behind him for the brain scan … just to see if the organ exists.

Michael Vick can’t hold a candle to PETA – they’ve murdered far more dogs than he has.

Doh you made that joke already :(
lorien1973 on May 1, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Well this is the country where a tax cheat is head of the treasury department.
And let’s face it – if PETA ever did anything logical – the sun would go dark.

Here’s a good Miller Analogy for the SAT or GRE:
Michael Vick is to PETA as Obama is to tax cuts.

Burn in HELL, Michael Vick! Damn you to the fire!

Vick isn’t a POS because he likes dog fighting, he is a scary POS because he personally likes to kill the animals that displease him. I’d bet Vick doesn’t give a sh1t about the fighting and gambling, he liked the dark license of personally torturing and taking life. He needs watching.

PETA has murdered many more dogs than Vick.
I got your back, lorien.

There are many things to criticize PETA for, but this isn’t really one of them; they didn’t torture those animals before putting them down, and they didn’t choose for those animals to be bred and then abandoned in the first place.
sandberg on May 1, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Yep, and Penn and Teller have an excellent four part video that demonstrates PETA’s hypocrisy!

Quite true, but they criticize others for simply eating meat to survive. They wanted to rename fish “sea kittens”. They’re still hypocrites.
amerpundit on May 1, 2009 at 5:56 PM
While I agree with your point that PETA at least didn’t torture animals like Vick did that doesn’t mitigate the fact PETA are a bunch of zealot hypocrites!

So was mine……….
…………. beware of the PETA fleas, Mr. Vick.

Also, to get an idea of the level of hypocrisy that is PETA click on the Penn and Teller videos I link to in a previous post.

Vick is clearly down in that picture. Can’t you see that his knee has come into contact with the ground. He is clearly down at that point.
He comes up short of the sticks. No first down.

Another PETA story, another veal chop goes on the grill.

There is a story out there about a young recruit wearing a shirt with PETA on it. The drill sargeant, seeing it, is looking forward to making an example of him. As he approaches, the drill sargeant reads the fine print underneath PETA in large capital letters: People Eating Tasty Animals…
churchill995 on May 1, 2009 at 6:14 PM
Great. From scumbag ghetto dog-fighter to sleazy hypocritical zealotry: A dog killer doing PSA’s for the lunatic organization that kills more dogs than any other “rescue” group in the country. Isn’t there some way we can just flush this turd?
Blacklake on May 1, 2009 at 6:15 PM
It is part of his rehabilitation. He and Spitzer probably have the same agent.
Theworldisnotenough on May 1, 2009 at 6:17 PM
I knew the stupid Lions were making a mistake inking that Stafford kid. An immensely talented and proven NFL QB just got out of jail, and I bet he’d cost hardly any money and require very little pass protection.
Sign of the Dollar on May 1, 2009 at 6:22 PM
PETA has already called for the eradication of the Pit Bull breed. Maybe they are hiring Vick to carry out the genocide.
Buddahpundit on May 1, 2009 at 6:26 PM
They took animals from shelters under the guise of finding new owners for them, and then killed them. And yet they accuse KFC of being like the Holocaust.
PETA is against the very concept of pet ownership. They think our little buddies are better off dead.

It’s all over the news – Swine Flew.
Ok ok, maybe that is a wee bit insensitive. But maybe we should bring back Canadian Cutie’s Meat Week to celebrate Vick’s victory?

Ted Nugent for gun control?
Miss California for gay marriage?

It is ironic how great deviant minds are drawn to each other. PETA and Vick do not see life like normal people do.

They don’t think anyone will be skeptical do they? Look at the group that got worried when Rush did a PSA for the Humane Society.

IDK how any sane person could take it seriously.

Wouldn’t this be a HATE CRIME?
PappaMac on May 1, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Well PETA is pretty big on killing dogs so I don’t see what would be the big deal of having Vick as a spokeman.
Rbastid on May 1, 2009 at 6:47 PM
I wonder, does he just have to swear off killing innocent animals or does he have to become a vegan? Peta has a history of really bone headed publicity campaigns, this might take the cake.

Which explains Pamela Anderson . . . how?
My no-kill rescue shelter Sparky hates Vick and PETA. I taught him well.

Although, as has been pointed out in this thread, they “liberated” pets from animal shelters and then killed them.
And they’re just so nurturing and understanding of other people, too.

PETA is vile. Not misguided, not wrong, not naive. Vile. There are slaughterhouses that kill less animals than PETA. Take a look at these numbers. These are government records from the State of Virginia showing the disposition of all animals in PETA’s care in 2007.
Here are PETA’s intake numbers for cats:
Here is what happened to them*:
And here are the dog intake numbers:
And is what happened to them*:
Looking at these numbers, if Michael Vick and Ingrid Newkirk both came to my door, and I had to choose to give my dog to one of them, I’d pick Vick, as vile as he is. My dog would have a better chance of surviving Vick than he would PETA. Like I said, PETA is vile.
*You’ll notice the numbers don’t quite add up. The reason why is because PETA tries to play a numbers game when they send their numbers to the State of Virginia. What they do is pretend that people who bring their dogs to them for spay/neuter are actually surrendering their dogs then reclaiming them. That makes their reclamation numbers much larger than they actually are. People don’t surrender their dog when they take them to the vet. But that is what Peta falsely claims in their form.

I got my dog Brewski from a no-kill rescue shelter. Thank God they picked her up off the streets before PETA did or she would have been just another amber colored rotting carcas in whatever dumpster they could illegally toss her.
I Hate PETA with a purple passion!
