New DHS folly: The Domestic Extremism Lexicon

posted at 12:55 pm on May 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Janet Napolitano-led Department of Homeland Security strikes gold again with a follow-up to its April 7th report casting conservative political positions as indicators of threats to national security.  Raw Story and the Daily Beast report that DHS produced a “lexicon” cataloguing the clues to detect extremists, which include Doc Martens and opposition to drivers licenses for illegal aliens — but somehow never gets around to mentioning Muslim extremists, such as the dozens of Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities who mysteriously disappeared:

The Department of Homeland Security set off a firestorm earlier this month when a memo surfaced that warned of right-wing extremists. The memo, which was issued to law-enforcement officials, suggested that extremists driven to dire straits by the Obama administration could recruit returning veterans to help produce Timothy McVeigh-like terrorism. Now, The Daily Beast has obtained another DHS memo, and this one identifies an even more far-ranging group of “extremists.”

Partisans leapt to decry the first DHS memo as part of a Democratic conspiracy to marginalize right wingers. But it became clear that DHS’s broad descriptions of extremists (“mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority”; “may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration”) were symptomatic of an ongoing agency problem that crossed ideological lines. Indeed, earlier memos surfaced that targeted left-wing extremists with the same uncomfortably vague descriptions. For example, one memo warned that anarchist extremists “embrace a number of radical philosophical components of anticapitalist, antiglobalization, communist, socialist, and other movements.”

The new memo obtained by The Daily Beast locates an even wider-ranging group of extremists among us. You could safely say it crosses liberal and conservative lines: Entries range from Mexican separatists to antiabortion extremists to racial Nordic mysticism. (Islamic groups are specifically excluded from this document.)

All you Odin followers need to get yourselves registered with the DHS, pronto, and stop watching Kröd Mandoon.  Perhaps this broad-ranging assault on political thought will wake up the Left to the noxious ideological bent of Napolitano’s DHS.  It should at least give Chris Dodd something to do, since he scored big political points on Hillary Clinton for her support of Eliot Spitzer’s plan to give licenses to illegal aliens.  Is Chris Dodd being trailed by DHS?

(U) anti-immigration extremism: (U//FOUO) A movement of groups or individuals who are vehemently opposed to illegal immigration, particularly along the U.S. southwest border with Mexico, and who have been known to advocate or engage in criminal activity and plot acts of violence and terrorism to advance their extremist goals. They are highly critical of the U.S. Government’s response to illegal immigration and oppose government programs that are designed to extend “rights” to illegal aliens, such as issuing driver’s licenses or national identification cards and providing in-state tuition, medical benefits, or public education.

The definition of right-wing extremism is back:

(U) rightwing extremism: (U//FOUO) A movement of rightwing groups or individuals who can be broadly divided into those who are primarily hate-oriented, and those who are mainly antigovernment and reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority. This term also may refer to rightwing extremist movements that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

The following demographics get mentioned, but not Muslims:

  • White nationalists
  • Black nationalists
  • Mexican nationalists
  • Puerto Rican nationalists
  • Violent religious sects
  • Jewish extremism

Hey, I’m not going to argue that there aren’t threats within all of these groups, and at least this focuses on actual known groups rather than just political discourse. But doesn’t this list seem a little … incomplete?  And is Jewish extremism really more of a threat than Muslim extremism?  Here in the Twin Cities, we haven’t seen Jewish immigrants suddenly disappear and conduct suicide bombings in Somalia.  Isn’t DHS just a wee bit curious about that?

According to Raw Story, DHS recalled this memo as soon as it went out in late March, which makes their April 7 memo on right-wing extremism even less understandable.  If this is the quality of work being done at DHS, then Janet Napolitano needs to get the axe — and she’s not alone.

Update: One commenter thinks “violent religious sects” covers the Muslims without naming them.  Not exactly:

(U) violent religious sects: (U//FOUO) Religious extremist groups predisposed toward violence. These groups often stockpile weapons, conduct paramilitary training, and share a paranoid interpretation of current world events, which they often associate with the end of the world. They perceive outsiders as enemies or evil influences; display intense xenophobia and strong distrust of the government; and exercise extreme physical or psychological control over group members, sometimes isolating them from society or subjecting them to physical or sexual abuse and harsh initiation practices.

That’s very generic.  Why not just name names?  The left-wing extremism report focused on specific groups as proven threats; this and the April 7 report give very generic and broad-reaching descriptions.  And note that DHS had no problem getting specific enough to mention Jews, Mexicans, blacks, and others.

DHS is a clusterfark and will continue to be until it’s able to shed both political correctness and partisanship. If you can’t name actual classes of demonstrably dangerous people (Muslim extremists) for fear of offending somebody, and you’re so politicized that you target returning veterans and vague pro-life groups as potential terrorists, then you can’t do anything productive. DHS is a joke. I saw give the whole department the axe, along with JaNo.

Ed, Ed, Ed. It’s all very simple. If you do not have a (D) next to your name, you are an extremist. See how easy that was? I’m going to state the obvious, probably to make myself feel better more than anything else:

The only people labeled “domestic extremists” in their lexicon are those opposed to them and their domestic power grab. It’s inside baseball in the guise of legitimate Federal government business.

They cannot to be allowed to redefine the vocabulary of “extremism”, domestic or otherwise. Such Orwellian rewriting of the vocabulary, and the mindset that provokes it, constitutes both sedition and treason IMM.

MarkT on May 1, 2009 at 1:54 PM

Good idea to hand this crap out at next tea parties! Will do!

As to the Jewish component of this, we tried to tell the Jews of this nation they had a large “X” on them. They would not listen. For the love of Pete, there was footage on YouTube where Hamas phone banks were set up to raise money for the Stinker. Then you had all those Farrakhan and Khalidi connections and tons of other evidence that JOOOOOS were not part of The One’s list of favorite peoples. I pray to God that the Jews on the East Coast are committing this to memory, because I fear for them in a major way.

Regarding the rest of us who do not fall in the other specified racial or religions categories, is anyone really surprised? To you Dems out there who are either having buyers remorse, or are not for THIS form of radicalization of America; we done told ya and told ya Liberalism is bad for ya! You too will be in these “re-education” camps, or thrown in prison for not agreeing with Mr. Floofy Pants. The sooner you Dems attempt to find some common grounds with us, and join in on the fight; the sooner you and your families will be able to prosper and have your freedoms restored. Remember, as Americans, we either fight together, or will be held hostage together. Or worse.

The Department of Homeland Insecurity need a thorough airing and clean sweeping.

First step: Janet Napolitano must go.

DHS has already used all it’s specific-naming abilities by making sure H1N1 replaces ‘swine’, so it’s back to the euphemisms.

cpr on May 1, 2009 at 2:05 PM

There may be good reason Napolitano won’t ‘name names’ when it comes to the most intense, and certainly the most actually viable, threat to the security and well being of the United States from enemies, foreign and domestic.

As Governor of Arizona, in her own state and in a public stadium on her own soil in the USA, she submits to Islamic doctrine for women.

Her ‘political pandering’ to the Muslims at the stadium on their Holy day even sparked a debate inside the American Islamic Forum for Democracy.

darwin on May 1, 2009 at 2:11 PM

Of great concern (to me anyway) is that the mission of DHS does not mention supporting and defending the Constitution:

Mission: We will lead the unified national effort to secure America. We will prevent and deter terrorist attacks and protect against and respond to threats and hazards to the Nation. We will secure our national borders while welcoming lawful immigrants, visitors, and trade.

I don’t see the Constitution in there anywhere, do you?

MarkABinVA on May 1, 2009 at 1:04 PM

You are probably right, but why then single out “Jewish extremists”?

ProfessorMiao on May 1, 2009 at

Because the DHS are a bunch of chickens, and are afraid of Muslims. Remember when newspapers in the Netherlands printed those Muslim cartoons, and as a result innocent people were killed and these people of this “peaceful religion” rioted in the streets of Europe and the world like thugs and criminals? Our country has now also given in to this hate by pretending to be “politically correct”.

Jewish Extremists, if they exist, are not threatening and killing just because they are called out in a memo or a cartoon, Muslim Extremists, however would probably burn down cities if called out in this way.

The US Government is threatened by its citizenry.

The US Government has too much power.

Which is hilarious considering that the U.S. Government already has enough of a stranglehold on our freedoms that an outright rebellion (short of a military coup) would not be effective.

Want to starve the government of funds and stop paying taxes? Good luck, the IRS will just garnish your wages or nationalize your company.

Want to march on Washington D.C.? Better be prepared to hitchhike, if you are considered an “extremist” you won’t be able to buy a plane ticket.

If the SHTF and they start ordering the military to arrest private citizens? Good luck defending yourself against the military with a handgun you had to wait 30 days for.

Want an adequate defense in court? You’ll have to wait in line behind the Pakistani terrorists and the Somali pirates who get the same rights you do.

Many of us chuckled when we read the DHS report about right winged extremists being single issue complainers, vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and other signs to watch for by police agencies and now those who are against illegals receiving drivers licenses are extremists. But this issue just got more serious. I visited a friend this afternoon and when I mentioned this new category of extremists to chuckle about, he told me that a family friend who had served multiple tours in Iraq, was sniper trained and was wounded several times and is now a civilian, has received a letter warning him in some form about misusing his training and he was being watched. Even if he received a letter just singling out his training group, period, we need a federal investigation of what is going on in DHS.

I always wanted a pair, but they were always too expensive. When I could finally afford them, my feet had changed shape after having twins, and they felt funny on my feet. They are great shoes, though, from what I’ve heard.

This reminds me of how schools ban gang-related clothing, including things of a certain color. To me, designating an article of clothing to belong to a undesired group (Doc Martens and skinheads, red bandanas and gangs, etc) only worsens the problem. If everybody wore the verboten item, it would lose its appeal as a gang/extremist symbol – it would no longer be unique. It also leads to misunderstandings – not everybody who wears those shoes or a gang color is a member of the group, but they might be treated as such anyway.

They can no sooner secure the United States and her citizens than a two year old child playing with a doll.

Better fend for yourself, ‘cuz folks, Janet Napolitano and her buddies, under Barrack Hussein Obama’s watch, are going to get us all killed.

Ain’t no doubt about it.

Way to go stupid voters! Now we have the fox watching the hen house.

If you think DHS is bad, you should see what a farce the BATF&E is. EVERY law enforcement agency laughs (and also fears) the BATF&E, from the U.S. Marshall’s Service and FBI to the City Police Departments. The BATF&E are largely leftists who froth at the mouth for power and usually have a political agenda. Notice you heard very little from the BATF&E during the Bush administration, I guarantee that you will hear more and more from them in the near future.

Perhaps this broad-ranging assault on political thought will wake up the Left to the noxious ideological bent of Napolitano’s DHS.

You’re kidding, right?

pussum207 on May 1, 2009 at 5:37 PM

And, BTW, why is Big Purple Baseballs still linked under “War on Terror”?

corona on May 1, 2009 at 5:55 PM

It still hasn’t been retracted:

DHS’s broad descriptions of extremists (“mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority”

…and that CNN twit calling Abe Lincoln’s view ‘antigovernment’ at her live ‘coverage’ of a tea party.

The only way to combat this pervasive fascistic onslaught is massive repudiation of it. Deciding to keep you mouth shut and hide indoors only promotes the illusion that Obama’s abusive presidency has your approval; he’s so popular with you; you’re so smart.

Give Napolitano to Thor.

Arizona
To repudiate Napolitano’s divisive gross miscarriage of responsibility, vote for McCain’s REPUBLICAN challenger.

Of course Charles Johnson and LGF are worthless on this issue. My how they have fallen. Too busy sniffing out creationists.

A lot of “legal” groundwork is being laid.

I’m a right-wing Jewish extremist-with a really scary alias.
You’re all terrified-admit it.

The very first paragraph of the memo states:

This product provides definitions for key terms and phrases that often appear in DHS analysis that addresses the nature and scope of the threat that domestic, non-Islamic extremism poses to the United States.

ED how did you miss that. You give Charles an easy target.

Greed on May 1, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Sorry to say, in terms of outrage, this one’s not even close to the level of the report released previously. I’m fairly certain that an index such as this is meant to be vague and generalized. If we don’t want DHS, the FBI, etc. to make such generalizations, then fine, but I think some are warranted.

I’d also suggest that the absence of Islamic extremism from the report is consistent with the fact that this ideology poses a far greater threat from foreign lands–not domestically, or at least not until President Obama dumps all the Gitmo detainess in the States.

cackcon on May 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM

By definition an extremist is anybody that disagrees with the Obama government. That may be the reason the muslims aren’t on the list.

He’s pretty well pissed off most Christians and everybody else who might consider an supreme being. I quite posting comments there quite a few months ago.

Re: Greed on May 1, 2009 at 7:00 PM

I think this is an example of where going off in the deep end without reading something fully can blow back and affect valid criticism by it’s association with other inaccurate complaints.

People are too eager to get angry I fear, lets not fall into ODS like the left did with BDS…

AGAIN Napoli-Reno refuses to look over at her wall where the FBI Most Wanted List for Domestic Terrorism is posted and actually READ that list of far-left-wing extermists.
http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/fugitives/dt/fug_dt.htm

The first report was created under Napoli-Reno and so was THIS list. (idiots…stop confusing updates For Adobe Acrobat with dates that documents were created)

Too bad Chucky’s too busy salivating at the thought of pushing around conservatives to notice that the VAST majority of this list is of the same ilk that he is gravitating towards.

He should rename his blog to “Little Green KosKids”

You don’t even have to be critical of him on other blogs. All you have to do is search banned members on his blog. All you have to do is mention on his blog that you missed the commentary of a particular banned member.

Chucky’s all for free speech, until you try to use it on his dime.

john1schn on May 1, 2009 at 8:40 PM

maybe they should rename it “Little Green Asshats.”
