McCain’s shockingly expensive loafers: $520; Michelle Obama’s sneakers: $540

posted at 5:01 pm on May 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

I honestly couldn’t care less, but the left’s politically calculated fake outrage about Maverick’s shoes last summer was even more annoying than their politically calculated fake outrage about how many homes he owns. I request, nay demand, a bit of politically calculated fake outrage in response.

While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.

That’s right: These sneakers – suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps – are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion’s hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring…

“They’re shoes,” the First Lady’s reps sniffed when curious reporters inquired about the fancy footwear.

Haute couture at a food bank. We should chip in and buy a pair for Palin in hopes that she’ll wear them to a bake sale or something, just to watch the media scandal erupt over how such a supposedly “down to earth” woman could be so thoughtless as to flaunt her wealth in front of common hard-working people.

Lest you doubt that this was indeed an issue for a 24-hour media cycle or two last year, click the image and scroll down. CNN — bouncing off a HuffPo post, natch — devoted three minutes of airtime to it, emphasizing the contrast between McCain and the heroically modest Democratic candidate who owns but four pairs of shoes.

Yawn… if she’d worn cheap shoes you’d be whining that she doesn’t have any class.

benny shakar on May 1, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Doesn’t help her at all. Cheap or expensive shoes–she has no class.

Me too. I own a pair……I’m a right wing extremist!

HornetSting on May 1, 2009 at 5:42 PM

i would wear shoes that ugly to do yard work. maybe they are her gardening shoes (i mean, you must need $540 shoes to harvest vegetables from a mere 30-day-old garden).

and by the way, because i doubted myself, i checked on all my seed packs & absolutely NO vegetable that i plant comes to fruit in 30 days. not even little slips of squash etc would make it in 30 days. that michelle is one amazing gardener.

kelley in virginia on May 1, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Her shoes are really the ugliest shoes I have ever, EVER seen. What Not To Wear would be disappointed.

deidre on May 1, 2009 at 5:45 PM

No one should be surprised with Michelle Obama’s vane adulation. She took her cue from Rappers.

maverick muse on May 1, 2009 at 5:45 PM

i wish allahpundit would let us say what we really thought of michelle, my belle. we are all so cute & snarky & original.

kelley in virginia on May 1, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Those tacky things on her feet are just plain UGLY. Tennis shoes for $540? Really? REALLY???

Not worth it.

pullingmyhairout on May 1, 2009 at 5:38 PM

Agreed. All of it.

Payless! FTW!

lorien1973 on May 1, 2009 at 5:29 PM

I’ve used Payless and gotten dress shoes for five dollars. Then again, I never expected those to last, and they didn’t. Within less than ten times of wearing them, they fell apart.

Esthier on May 1, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Any chance we could get that pic of her serving food at a fast food joint with the homeless guy (or so he seemed) leaning across the counter snapping a pic of her with his cel phone? Would be a perfect complement to this one!

Biffstir on May 1, 2009 at 5:48 PM

ANYBODY, I don’t care HOW much money one may have.
Anybody who spends that much on shoes is simply stupid.
I can afford to.
Why in the world would I??
Sheer stupidity.

katiejane on May 1, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I’ve bought expensive shoes once or twice, although all the shoes I’ve had that looked like those were under $30.

But remember: she’s one of the people, and she chose to buy those shoes. Ergo the people don’t know how to spend their own money and the government must do it for them.

calbear on May 1, 2009 at 5:55 PM

I didn’t even know they made sneakers @ 540. I’m just glad she had that very important high paying hospital job simultaneous with Obama’s Senate tenure.

Spirit of 1776 on May 1, 2009 at 5:56 PM

KS Rex on May 1, 2009 at 5:56 PM

And you know they picked out shoes that were just ever-so-slightly more expensive than McCain’s cuz no one would say anything and it’d be good for a laugh.

lorien1973 on May 1, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Bingo!

KittyLowrey on May 1, 2009 at 5:58 PM

BTW, is this what she’s doing with her time as First Lady? Sort of rich society lady volunteering rather than publicizing some sort of cause

Supposedly, she has taken on the cause of military families. She stated that “like most of you,” she never really thought much about them before.

And I agree with you, Diva. J.Crew is too rich for my blood, too.

Alana on May 1, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Totally off subject, but I saw this video on youtube of Condi Rice. She did good.

deidre on May 1, 2009 at 5:59 PM

The moral distinction between McCain and Michelle is obvious.

Her biceps and triceps are way better than his.

She deserves to spend more on shoes.

Q.E.D.

J.E. Dyer on May 1, 2009 at 6:00 PM

She may not be proud of her country but she’s proud of her footwear.

viking01 on May 1, 2009 at 6:01 PM

Michelle is clearly extremely insecure that she would spend over $500 bucks on a pair of ugly ass designer bling shoes and then wear them to a food bank
(”I’m better and richer than you, right?).
And they’re not even American!

If she wears one more harlequin-patterned sweater, I’m going to scream and AP will be able to hear all the way to NYC!
She must have bought every color of harlequin sweater J.Crew had–and they are hideous.

Jenfidel on May 1, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Regardless if the shoes are ugly (and they are ugly) or beautiful, with feet that big she shouldn’t do anything to draw attention to them. She has awful taste in general. I’ve seen maybe two outfits on her that looked nice.

She and her pathetic courtiers have taken this country, MY country, to a new low.

I can’t wait until she takes those shoes for a WALK the hell out the door in 2012.

seejanemom on May 1, 2009 at 6:09 PM

Except for her hideous inagural outfits… And only in the rich people world is J Crew considered a low price option. Most of us make due with Gap instead.

BTW, is this what she’s doing with her time as First Lady? Sort of rich society lady volunteering rather than publicizing some sort of cause. I’m all for volunteering, but she’s doing the sorts of things that I-banking executives, lawyers, and heiress that don’t have to work do all the time (and us peons do on the weekend). But I guess they really cannot have her do anything more high profile, because then we’d all get a taste of her quite rude personality and whiny political views.

Illinidiva on May 1, 2009 at 5:24 PM

heh. Didn’t say I shopped at JCrew…just said I loved them. I get catalogues and copy the style…somewhat like my relationship with Pottery Barn. :o)

Indeed, the fact that she wears grossly overpriced sneakers should be a non-issue and absolutely none of our business, but for the fact that she and his Holiness have told us that we have to “sacrifice”, and are shameless demagogues who pit the “poor” against the “rich”.

Michelle O complained that Bush’s measly $600 tax rebate wouldn’t even buy a pair of earrings. I guess her husband’s tax “cuts” wouldn’t even buy a pair of WalMart store-brand canvas Keds knock-offs. What can 13 bucks buy for your feet? $2 flip-flops for the entire family! (And you should be grateful that the Obamas allow you to have footwear at all, peasants.)

Typing in caps, is the same as yelling, is it not? No one will take your point of view seriously, when you act out this way. And let’s be honest. Those that come here from Huffpo, or DK, are here once again, to do damage control. I’ve noticed when a story spikes , such as this, you all come here in droves, in attack mode.

It doesn’t look good for people who espouse to be for the working man, and want the best for them, yet most are unemployed, or living , and doing without. Then along comes the first lady in $500 dollar shoes? It doesn’t look good, and you know it. That’s the true mode of your anger.

You attacked McCain for the very same thing you protect Michelle from. That’s hypocritical.

Carry on, Dear. As I recall you hit the rage stage quite easily, like when you don’t get the hat tip you think you deserved.

As for Ms. Obama, I know exactly who thinks she is and who she thinks we are. That makes her a number of things (arrogant, racist, sanctimonious, hypocritical…) but to say she is “vulgar” or “disgusting” seems a wee bit unwarranted.

As for being a “neocon” I’m mulling over whether or not I should take that as a compliment. Not being a Jew I’m not a perfect fit, but I do admire their perseverance in, say, fighting Islamfascism. I have never noticed that neocons care one way or the other about shoes (burkhas, perhaps), but apparently you have, so what do I know?!

Wearing designer shoes (even as ugly as they are) to work at a homeless food pantry is as clueless and tasteless as Michelle O’s remarks to those impoverished women in Ohio when she claimed that President Bush’s tax rebate of $600 was only enough to buy a pair of earrings.

The Obamas exhibit an attitude of entitlement that simply rubs me the wrong way. Their behavior is as tacky as that of the nouvea riche.

Double standards of the media? You betcha!

emphasizing the contrast between McCain and the heroically modest Democratic candidate who owns but four pairs of shoes.

Lemme see…if each of Chicago Jesus’ four pair of shoes cost $500, that makes $2000. Just for shoes. I don’t know that I’ve spent $2000 on all the shoes I’ve owned in my whole life.

Look, I don’t really care how much Michelle Obama paid for her shoes. I’m not a big “shoe” person, but I know that some women are. The thing is, when you’re volunteering at a food bank, it’s just a tad insensitive to go there wearing more on your feet than some of the people you’re serving will have to spend on food and shelter for an entire month. This just points up how clueless and superficial these people are. It’s sad, really.

uncivilized on May 1, 2009 at 10:01 PM

I request, nay demand, a bit of politically calculated fake outrage in response.

A subtle, Olbermannesque rewrite of the Daily News clip…

While her fascist minions brutally herded those recently dispossessed of their wealth, lands, and dignity by the confiscatory dictates of her husband and his cabal of sycophants for yet another of her grotesque propagandist spectacles, the First Lady, patronizing as only she can, sported her usual ensemble whenever she attempts to “reach out” to those deigned beneath her station, a J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a betrayal of her contemptible, diseased, übermensch mindset : trainers that go for $540.

That’s right: These sneakers – with suede made of the living flesh stripped from as yet born calves, partially ripped from the wombs of their mothers so as the material many retain its maximum suppleness, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps – are manufactured by child slave labor under the control of the fashion division of ruthless French mega corporation d Lanvin, one of Fascism’s hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, to suit the unique fashion sense of those who derive sadistic pleasure from crushing the hopes and dreams of others under foot, and have been a brisk seller all spring…

“They’re shoes,” the First Lady’s goon squad leeringly replied to a suddenly meek, apologetic reporter that inquired about the fancy footwear. There were no further questions as the reporter was summarily escorted away, her muffled screams no longer heard, undoubtedly to join the ranks of the disappeared

Buy Danish is right, seejane: being a NeoCon has doing to do with the subject at hand (Neo-Conservatism is the advocacy of muscular American foreign policy.)
The only thing these expensive Lanvin bling shoes speaks volumes to is MO’s feeling of inferiority and her overcompensation because of it to “lord it over” the rest of us.
Also, as I keep stressing, she’s not even trying to buy American–Sketchers, Keds, Sperry Topsiders or even Crocs would have been much better.

Generally, in the past, those of us on the political right have kept our comments about the physical traits of politicians and their wives to ourselves, then Obama and his queen came along. Now we have all gotten so sick of hearing how gorgeous and “Jackie O” that Michelle is, when it just is not true. She is okay looking, but certainly not what the media has hyped her to be. I guess what makes us just want to put her down is her snooty, high and mighty attitude.

If I could give her some fashion advice, (and I, as a fairly stylish business woman, pride myself on my frugal, good fashion sense), I would say “Michelle, buy yourself a classy suit”, it sure would be better use of that $540.00!!!

Just goes to prove:

1) money cannot buy a sense of fashion or style.

2) liberalism is awash in hypocrisy.

Yawn… if she’d worn cheap shoes you’d be whining that she doesn’t have any class.

Actually no one would have mentioned it at all.

She is the type that would never consider the stupidity, arrogance and the tackyness of wearing expensive, designer clothes to a food bank. Why, because it is all about her and her and her and look at me I’m doing a good deed! It is all about her don’t you know!

I have a friend that way. She showed up to a moving party for a mutual friend dressed in a skin tight, short, black party dress wearing high heels so she would get noticed (her boyfriend at the time was none too happy!). She relishes the title of “Drama Queen” bestowed on her as it has the word “Queen” in it.

It is Clinton holding up traffic at LAX for hours while he got haircut on board Air Force One by some high-priced barber-to-the-stars.

It is Obama using his nomination as the Democratic presidential nominee to define that moment as the time “…our planet begins to heal.”

It is being full of yourself, plain and simple.
