If we’re teabaggers, then they’re …

posted at 7:52 pm on April 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’re preparing for a road trip in a couple of weeks, and one of the tasks on the list is getting the car ready to make the 700-mile trip.  I don’t drive much these days, since I work from home, and that means that oil changes and tire rotations get forgotten. The Honda CRV has 86,000 miles on it, and I’d like to make sure it can stand another 1500 or so without a problem.

I’ve managed to get all the inspections done in the last two days, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to drive at rush hour on a Thursday through the major intersection in my neighborhood. I had forgotten that a local chapter of United for Peace and Justice holds “Honk 4 Peace” rallies on the street corner each Thursday evening.  I’m a big fan of peaceful assembly, even when I disagree with the cause, and these are exactly as harmless as you’d expect in a Minnesota suburb.  The protestors eagerly solicit people to honk, acting as though each toot of a car horn gives a UN angel his wings, and usually the small crowd includes a couple of amusing lunatics. Today, one elderly man held aloft a sign that claimed that Lockheed Martin is the biggest war profiteer in the world, along with a lot of other gibberish that was (a) too small to read, and (b) too much for cars speeding by at 45 MPH.

While I was stopped at the intersection, two of the five or six people involved were too busy talking on cell phones to hold their signs up, and in any event they didn’t get too many takers.  The only annoying thing about them is that they encourage people to slow down while passing by, and it worsens an already-bad traffic bottleneck.

Anyway, while passing through the Honk 4 Peacers, I began mulling over in my mind how to refer to them.  After all, the Left had taken to calling Tea Party protestors “teabaggers” as a way to belittle the demonstrators and amuse themselves.  I thought about it all the way home, and the only thing I could come up with was … honkies.

Think that’ll catch on?

Update: Oh, man, an even better one from the comments: hornies.

The Executive Order on Ethics Commitments by Executive Branch Personnel lays out tough rules on how executive branch appointees are to conduct themselves and requires every appointee in every executive agency to sign an ethics pledge. The Executive Order allows for a waiver when the literal application of the Pledge does not make sense or is not in the public interest. In the interest of transparency, granted waivers are posted online.

Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies

SUBJECT: Transparency and Open Government

My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government.

Government should be transparent. Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their Government is doing. Information maintained by the Federal Government is a national asset. My Administration will take appropriate action, consistent with law and policy, to disclose information rapidly in forms that the public can readily find and use.

Expired.

In his first inaugural address, Obama said that “those of us who manage the public’s dollars” will “do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.”

Schadenfreude on May 20, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Plausible deniability is a term coined by the CIA during the Kennedy administration to describe the withholding of information from senior officials in order to protect them from repercussions in the event that illegal or unpopular activities by the CIA became public knowledge.

The term most often refers to the denial of blame in (formal or informal) chains of command, where senior figures assign responsibility to the lower ranks, and records of instructions given do not exist or are inaccessible, meaning independent confirmation of responsibility for the action is nearly impossible. In the case that illegal or otherwise disreputable and unpopular activities become public, high-ranking officials may deny any awareness of such act or any connection to the agents used to carry out such acts. The lack of evidence to the contrary ostensibly makes the denial plausible, that is, credible. The term typically implies forethought, such as intentionally setting up the conditions to plausibly avoid responsibility for one’s (future) actions or knowledge.

Does is really matter? Someone at a senior level let the Treasury IG loose on the IRS, resulting in a long investigation with harsh and damning conclusions. There would have been a major scandal if any member of the White House senior staff had learned of the IRS malfeasance, without any pursuant investigation or comparable action. In that alternative scenario, you’d have grounds for accusing the Obama team of something comparable to a Nixon era cover-up.

But that’s not what occurred. The IG was uncompromising in its pursuit of the truth, and its report exposed either criminal or incredibly incompetent behavior at IRS. You’re left with another who-knew-what-when kind of blame game that’s not interesting to anyone beyond the far right.

Okay, what’s your point with the Wikipedia clip?

Especially after this administration, who doesn’t understand the concept of plausible deniability? But here’s the thing. It has to be selectively used to be effective. You can’t use it repeatedly without it becoming apparent that you are not doing your job.

They tried it with Benghazi- The IC produced those talking points, all the White House did was change consulate to diplomatic facility.

They tried it with the AP records seizure- It is inappropriate for the President to be involved with ongoing investigations.

And they are trying to do it with the IRS scandal.

Plausible deniablity is one of those things that has to be used with descretion. It is not a long-term political strategy.

I don’t think this is a case of plausible deniability. Obama knew. In fact, I think he’s known about all the scandals. Democrats forever and a day are micromanagers without integrity. Jarrett is probably the last firewall, and she’s probably set up other firewalls. However, Obama’s long history has been a toxic mix of ideology and Chicago-style politics, and he revels in taunting and going after his enemies. He’s shown this publicly. I don’t think there’s any way he would have wanted to miss out on knowing of the results from all the departments, if only to have his private moment of arrogant mockery. I think his minions would have rushed to pass the word along about the report. That IRS question was set up to be their limited hangout on this, but the dam began to crack. Every crack increases the likelihood of the entire dam breaking.

Again, we are talking about the professional ethics rules. The question is whether it is a violation of the Canon of Ethics for the WHC to advise the POTUS of the existence of an ongoing investigation and its expected outcome. My position is that it does NOT violate the ethics rule for the President’s Counsel to inform him of an ongoing investigation of which counsel has been properly informed by an Inspector General or the Department of Justice. It would be a violation of the ethics rules, among other things, if the Counsel improperly and illegally told the President, which is not the case, or if the Counsel acted improperly or illegally at the behest of the President. As to the latter, there is no evidence of such in this case nor am I alleging same.

The matter of Valerie Jarrett, et al, which I raised, has nothing to do with the ethical questions concerning the WHC. My point was to merely voice the type of White House environment, which has been written about on numerous occasions.

Maybe somewhere in the $5M range with the offer of the best legal counsel available if attacked legally.

It’ll just remind the Left what the free market can accomplish.

‘…it was Chris Matthews of MSNBC who cut even deeper in his Hardball show on Wednesday. A former speechwriter for President Carter, he wondered if Obama “really doesn’t want to be responsible day-to-day for running” the government. He savaged the White House for using “weird, spooky language” about “the building leadership” that must approve the Benghazi talking points.

“I don’t understand the model of this administration: weak chiefs of staff afraid of other people in the White House. Some undisclosed role for Valerie Jarrett. Unclear, a lot of floating power in the White House, but no clear line of authority. I’ve talked to people who’ve been chief of staff. They were never allowed to fire anybody, so they weren’t really chief of staff.” He concluded that President Obama “obviously likes giving speeches more than he does running the executive branch.”

‘President Obama has got to stop taking advice from sycophants who keep telling him he’s right and only they can be trusted. He needs to act. He needs to fire people. He needs to grab control of his presidency,’ Matthews said.

The President of the National Treasury Employees Union, Colleen Kelley, meet personally with Obama at the White House on March 31, 2010. According to the Inspector General Report, the next day, April 1, 2010, was the beginning of the “targeting” effort of the IRS, as the IRS Technical Unit suggested the need for a “Sensitive Case Report” on Tea Party cases.

I respectfully suggest that those buying into the “Obama’s just disconnected” meme are forgetting where this guy is from: Chicago. I would like to know if there were notes of that meeting taken, if there were others present at that meeting, and what action items, if any, came out of that meeting. Well obviously they told him. In order to understand what Obama knew and did one should look at who has been fired or not fired. WHC and his Chief of Staff still have their jobs. Sarah Hall Ingram still has her promotion. Obama obviously approves of the job she’s done.

For a couple of guys who should be familiar with the law, Obama and Holder so often mislead and misstate that one must conclude they are both pathetically ignorant, and liars.

We are paying the price for forty years of politically-correct racism, aka Affirmative Action.

When it was hatched all those years ago, who thought that it would eventually apply to the President of the United States?

Carney: Okay Fine, Senior Officials Knew the IRS Report was Coming, but Nobody Told Obama
…FINALLY, OBOZO’s chief propagandist said something that is believable!
Of course, the REASON OBOZO wasn’t told is because he was either stoned on pot, out golfing, partying, on vacation or out campaigning – so NOBODY in the WH could ever get to see him.

Carney: No, seriously, Obama’s lawyer didn’t tell him that the IRS was targeting tea partiers

And yesterday’s CNN/ORC poll showed that 55% of Americans think the IRS Fake Scandal is VERY IMPORTANT. I wasn’t aware that 55% of Americans were “far right.”

No one is contesting the important of the IRS scandal. I was specifically referring to accusations that Obama knew about it a few months ago, at a time when the Treasury IG was starting or already engaged in an objective investigation that would reveal the truth about IRS behavior.

So let’s say he knew about it a month ago… could you then imply that he was directly involved in ordering the IG investigation?

bayam on May 20, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Blake entire poem is apropos:

Deceiver, dissembler
Your trousers are alight
From what pole or gallows
Shall they dangle in the night?

When I asked of your career
Why did you have to kick my rear
With that stinking lie of thine
Proclaiming that you owned a mine?

When you asked to borrow my stallion
To visit a nearby-moored galleon
How could I ever know that you
Intended only to turn him into glue?

What red devil of mendacity
Grips your soul with such tenacity?
Will one you cruelly shower with lies
Put a pistol ball between your eyes?

What infernal serpent
Has lent you his forked tongue?
From what pit of foul deceit
Are all these whoppers sprung?

Deceiver, dissembler
Your trousers are alight
From what pole or gallows
Do they dangle in the night?

If he knew a month ago why did he pretend he didn’t know until 2 Fridays ago? Because his outage was contrived. He wasn’t outraged because he encouraged it, if he didn’t suggest it directly to NTEU President Colleen Kelley.

Poor brayam.

Last week, both you and Carney were shrieking that no one in the White House knew anything g.

Now you’re directly contradicting yourself.

Were you lying then, brayam?

Bray for us, donkey.

northdallasthirty on May 20, 2013 at 7:49 PM

Last week, both you and Carney were shrieking that no one in the White House knew anything g.

When did I say that no one in the White House knew anything a month ago? I still have no idea why that’s even relevant. The behavior at IRS ended over a year prior and the IG investigation was ongoing at that point in time.

With no evidence linking the White House to the behavior at IRS, and an aggressive Treasury investigation underway in early 2013, desperation is setting in. Let’s comb remarks for inconsistencies and try and invent a new scandal!

bayam on May 20, 2013 at 8:07 PM

I love how the braying donkey brayam tries to rewrite history when its lies are thrown back in its face.

And now suddenly “inconsistencies” are acceptable, when last week brayam was hee-hawing that “inconsistencies” equaled “doctoring”.

There really isn’t any lie the donkey brayam will not tell to protect its flailing Obama and cover up for Obama’s fascist use of the Federal bureaucracy to illegally harass and punish anyone who voted against him, is there

Donna Brazille is one of, if not the most, connected Dem manager in their stable.

She knows all of this. She knows Rahm and company were aware what was going on, and she knows the truth about who knew what over Benghazi.

Her op-ed this morning wasn’t a plea, it was a warning.

If we on the right connect the dots and wreck Obama’s second term, then the progs and the Dem identity unions are going to declare war either at the mid-terms, or from ’14 until the ’16 election, and they’ll make it worse than election 2K.

She knows how corrupt Team Barry is, just as she knows how much Hillary is culpable for.

budfox on May 20, 2013 at 8:26 PM

With what I desperately hope is no evidence linking the White House to the behavior at IRS, and an after-the-fact Treasury investigation underway in early 2013 after the election has been won, reality is setting in. Let’s try and distract!

So, Fox coverage is the administrations criteria.

Does is really matter?

bayam on May 20, 2013 at 5:42 PM

In one great way, no matter who is involved, yes.

This is the end of the progressive agenda during Obama’s reign.

He has shown through one bumbling response after another, from plausible denial to “government is too big for one person to know what’s going on”, that there cannot be a benevolent government so long as people hold too much power.

People can’t be expected to respond in a benevolent way outside the procedural responsibilities of government positions. Government by its very nature is corruptible.

We come from a heritage of people who fled from oppressive governments to create one which protected the rights of individuals. Obama and the progressive movement have spent the last five years attempting to reverse this understanding. Now, in three weeks, the carefully built house of cards has collapsed.

This lesson must be remembered long after the players have gone. The progressive agenda needed the coercion of the IRS to suppress and intimidate voters. Government is corruptible, and people are corrupt. This is why we need a Bill of Rights that establishes our freedoms are not guaranteed by governments, but our natural right.
