ABC outs psychologists who developed CIA waterboarding program; Update: Not outed?

posted at 9:49 pm on April 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

This one’s a closer call than when the Times outed KSM’s chief interrogator against Michael Hayden’s wishes. That was really a story about America’s counterterror apparatus after 9/11; the interrogator was a minor character, which made the outing gratuitous. ABC’s piece is about how these two guys masterminded the CIA’s program — while allegedly not really knowing what they were doing. Can you break a story like that, affecting national policy on a subject of public interest, without saying specifically who you’re talking about?

Both Mitchell and Jessen were previously involved in the U.S. military program to train pilots how to survive behind enemy lines and resist brutal tactics if captured.

But it turns out neither Mitchell nor Jessen had any experience in conducting actual interrogations before the CIA hired them.

“They went to two individuals who had no interrogation experience,” said Col. Kleinman. “They are not interrogators.”

The new documents show the CIA later came to learn that the two psychologists’ waterboarding “expertise” was probably “misrepresented” and thus, there was no reason to believe it was “medically safe” or effective. The waterboarding used on al Qaeda detainees was far more intense than the brief sessions used on U.S. military personnel in the training classes.

“The use of these tactics tends to increase resistance on the part of the detainee to cooperating with us. So they have the exact opposite effect of what you want,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich).

The new memos also show waterboarding was used “with far greater frequency than initially indicated” to even those in the CIA.

Follow the link and you’ll find a whiff of a revenge motive here by ABC: They got burned two years ago when an agent wrongly told them Zubaydah had been waterboarded only once and now it smells like they’re trying to atone by throwing Mitchell and Jessen to the wolves. Exit question: Is it fair to torch their anonymity given the hint of malfeasance in their waterboarding expertise having been “misrepresented?”

Update: Goldfarb’s outraged:

In other words, Cole is a left-wing partisan with questionable reporting chops. This is obvious from the quality of the story tonight. Cole repeats the now throughly debunked claim that Zubaydah and KSM were waterboarded 83 and 183 times respectively. He posts video of the two refusing to answer questions in what is staged as a faux perp walk with no discernible news value other than to portray them as criminals. And, most amazingly, Cole indicts the two men for not having any experience prior to their work for the CIA — as though being “previously involved in the U.S. military program to train pilots how to survive behind enemy lines and resist brutal tactics” isn’t relevant.

His exit question: Who leaked their identities, and does The One care?

Update: Larry Johnson e-mails to say that Mitchell and Jessen were already named by Jane Mayer in her book The Dark Side. So much for ABC’s blockbuster.

“The use of these tactics tends to increase resistance on the part of the detainee to cooperating with us. So they have the exact opposite effect of what you want,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich).

I hate this rhetorical tactic because it implies that the proponent of the policy in question doesn’t even have the most rudimentary method for measuring success, which is clearly not the case as recent statements from within the intelligence community have indicated.

For example, if I said to Levin, “Raising tax rates to increase tax revenues increases reluctance to provide labor, so it has the opposite effect of what you want”, what do you think he’d say to that? He’d say, “Show me some data before I believe something like that”, unless he’s a complete idiot.

Carl, you’re not some figure from “on high” who can just make claims about things without “showing your work”. Show us some data or STFU.

“Does the One care?” The One was probably asked what he thought before the story was broke, and the fact that it made it to print is evidence of what he thought.

All that whining and crying about desk jockey Valarie Plame

“Smart Power” my ass.

Remember, even Obama has declared that these techniques stopped attacks and saved lives.

This revisionism of history and standing in judgment after more than 7 years of safety is real easy for the latte warriors.

“Both were previously involved in the U.S. military program to train…[to} resist brutal tactics if captured.”

“They went to two individuals who had no interrogation experience,” said Col. Kleinman. “They are not interrogators.”

Colonel Steven Kleinman, Air Force Reserve, is the current darling of NPR, and the Left, sort of this year’s Malcolm Nance…and is no intelligence interrogator himself. He is a criminal investigator by trade. CID is not intelligence.

What Kleinman fails to understand is that these contractors were hired because both had a career of experience in SERE and in training pilots and others how to resist hostile interrogation.

I’d suppose that over their careers they were familiar with hostile interrogations from the other side, ya think? I’d have added folks with similar experience to my team. Adds an important perspective that would otherwise be lacking.

Besides, both were operating under an established “finding” framework, that framework we have gone over ad nauseum over the past few years. Kleinman’s protests ring hollow.

As for ABC…if anything happens to either of these former contractors…what is the legal scope of accessory before the fact? ABC just set these guys up. Reprehensible.

coldwarrior on April 30, 2009 at 10:11 PM

The MSM went crazy when Valerie Plame’s name was leaked out. Keith Olbermann demanded that President Bush and Vice President Cheney resign because of it. But the MSM has no problem with revealing the names of CIA agents involved with counter terrorism. What’s up with that?

SoulGlo on April 30, 2009 at 10:11 PM

The moonstream media act this way because they expect others to die as a result of their actions, not themselves.

The left has always had a dearth of empathy for ordinary Americans and very high regard for themselves.

Combine that with low regard for the country as a whole and you get the journalism we have seen as late.

I wonder how they would act if the threat were directed at them instead of the unwashed hoi polloi in flyoverville.

maladapted on April 30, 2009 at 10:12 PM

What’s up with the MSM? It’s one thing to fawn over the Messiah, bow and scrape, and be in the tank. But it is entirely another thing to actively pursue revealing all of America’s secrets to the enemy and pursuing stories that if printed will leave the Amercian people more vulnerable to attack and harm.

Being in the tank is one thing; being traitors to your country is entirely another.

ABC reporters BRIAN ROSS, MATTHEW COLE, and JOSEPH RHEE are essentially committing treason here, helping Al Qaeda and jeopardizing american lives during war time; both Mitchell and Jessen and perhaps others that helped the CIA, which would seem to make ABC complicit if anything happened to Mitchell and Jessen or anyone else. What ABC did seems highly unethical and jeopardizes America.

Yes,
let’s start with the Clinton administration that practiced much worse forms of interrogation and then investigate
Nancy Pelosi and John D.Rockefeller’s 100% support for these methods.

But by all means, let’s throw these CIA villains up against the wall and demand to know how they feel about helping achieve results like these:

Empirically, however, it seems beyond dispute that something has made us safer since 2001. Over the course of the Bush administration, successful attacks on the United States and its interests overseas have dwindled to virtually nothing.

2004
There were no successful attacks inside the United States or against American interests abroad.
2005
There were no successful attacks inside the United States or against American interests abroad.
2006
There were no successful attacks inside the United States or against American interests abroad.
2007
There were no successful attacks inside the United States or against American interests abroad.
2008
So far, there have been no successful attacks inside the United States or against American interests abroad.

Then let’s really stick it to them and ask how they could live with themselves after doing this:

Foiled Terror Plots Against America Since 9/11

Thursday , September 11, 2008
http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,335500,00.html
By Joseph Abrams and Jonathan Passantino

The following is a list of known terror plots thwarted by the U.S. government since Sept. 11, 2001.
• December 2001, Richard Reid: British citizen attempted to ignite shoe bomb on flight from Paris to Miami.
• May 2002, Jose Padilla: American citizen accused of seeking radioactive-laced “dirty bomb” to use in an attack against Amrica. Padilla was convicted of conspiracy in August, 2007.

• August 2004, Dhiren Barot: Indian-born leader of terror cell plotted bombings on financial centers (see additional images).
• August 2004, James Elshafay and Shahawar Matin Siraj: Sought to plant bomb at New York’s Penn Station during the Republican National Convention.
• August 2004, Yassin Aref and Mohammed Hossain: Plotted to assassinate a Pakistani diplomat on American soil.
• June 2005, Father and son Umer Hayat and Hamid Hayat: Son convicted of attending terrorist training camp in Pakistan; father convicted of customs violation.
• August 2005, Kevin James, Levar Haley Washington, Gregory Vernon Patterson and Hammad Riaz Samana: Los Angeles homegrown terrorists who plotted to attack National Guard, LAX, two synagogues and Israeli consulate.
• December 2005, Michael Reynolds: Plotted to blow up natural gas refinery in Wyoming, the Transcontinental Pipeline, and a refinery in New Jersey. Reynolds was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
• February 2006, Mohammad Zaki Amawi, Marwan Othman El-Hindi and Zand Wassim Mazloum: Accused of providing material support to terrorists, making bombs for use in Iraq.
• April 2006, Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee: Cased and videotaped the Capitol and World Bank for a terrorist organization.
• June 2006, Narseal Batiste, Patrick Abraham, Stanley Grant Phanor, Naudimar Herrera, Burson Augustin, Lyglenson Lemorin, and Rotschild Augstine: Accused of plotting to blow up the Sears Tower.
• July 2006, Assem Hammoud: Accused of plotting to bomb New York City train tunnels.
• August 2006, Liquid Explosives Plot: Thwarted plot to explode ten airliners over the United States.
• March 2007, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed: Mastermind of Sept. 11 and author of numerous plots confessed in court in March 2007 to planning to destroy skyscrapers in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Mohammedalso plotted to assassinate Pope John Paul II and former President Bill Clinton.
• May 2007, Fort Dix Plot: Six men accused of plotting to attack Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey. The plan included attacking and killing soldiers using assault rifles and grenades.
• June 2007, JFK Plot: Four men are accused of plotting to blow up fuel arteries that run through residential neighborhoods at JFK Airport in New York.
September 2007, German authorities disrupt a terrorist cell that was planning attacks on military installations and facilities used by Americans in Germany. The Germans arrested three suspected members of the Islamic Jihad Union, a group that has links to Al Qaeda and supports Al Qaeda’s global jihadist agenda.

There are many more examples of attacks that were thwarted
but the Obama administration conveniently has not released those memos.

Yes,how can they live with themselves having stopped terrorist attacks and keeping not just America safe, but muslims all over the world who are being killed by the jihadist.

Can’t wait to see the spinning and justification of how it is okay to blow the cover of these CIA operatives but somehow little miss magazine cover Plame, who never saw a camera she didn’t want to be in front of,being outed by Armitage was some type of major crime.

What the ***!?!?

They give Obama’s rendition extension program a pass. They don’t attack Clinton for STARTING the rendition program, they don’t investigate SQUAT when it comes to the Democrats.

Is this what thie country is dissolved to? FDR throws all the US Japanese citizens in jail and the NYTimes smiles and champions him, Bush has 3 guys waterboarded and they not only do a witch hunt, they out anybody and everybody remotely even connected with military interrogations.

I will NOT stand with Obama on this.

This is war.

I’m sure the activists who willing waterboard themselves don’t have experience either. Maybe you’d like to bring them all up on charges.

Too bad Mitchell and Jessen couldn’t have gotten a seat aboard Air Force One during the Manhattan flyover. Then, their identities would have been forever a secret.

Why was it wrong to “out” Valerie Plame, but not wrong to out these two?

davenp35 on April 30, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I think it’s about time we turned our nation’s nuclear launch codes over to the MSM so that our enemies will have complete “transparency” regarding our country’s ability to defend itself.

But, potential enemies should beware, when worse comes to worst, and we’re engaged mano a mano, “don’t tread on me”. I’m prepared.

United we stand. Divided, we collapse from within.

“They went to two individuals who had no interrogation experience,” said Col. Kleinman. “They are not interrogators.”

can we investigate now?
sesquipedalian on April 30, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Coming from a creature who voted for the most inexperienced President in history, your question is the height of absurdity.

But, while we’re at it, can we investigate how you got to be such a moron? Were you born to morons or repeatedly dropped on your head as a baby?

I’m not sure Allah agrees with us. In fact, I am kind of surprised no one has answered Allah’s exit question.

Maybe because the answer is too easy?

It came from the White House. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Is everything with you an “instant replay?” You just keep spouting the same drivel over and over. I wonder just who you are trying to convince, us or yourself.

They can’t have committed any “war crimes.” The obamamessiah has already declared we have no war on terror.

ABC outs psychologists who developed CIA waterboarding program

Was Bill Moyers involved?

Because they hate America. Next question.

In his “press conference” last night, BHO claimed that we could have gotten the crucial information from the terrorists we’ve captured, “without resorting to torture”.

WTF sort of “incentive” does BHO think would have caused these pigs to reveal their schemes? An extra helping of Ben & Jerry’s Rainforest Crunch at dinner time? An extra couple hours of Al Jeezera TV every day in the Gitmo day room?

It’s obvious that neither BHO, nor any ranking advisor in his administration has ever worn our nation’s uniform into armed combat against the world’s despots, dictators, and other assorted vermin.

For waterboarding to be “torture” and a so-called “crime against humanity”, the assumption is that the waterboardee is “human”. As I see it, in the case of KSM, et. al., all anyone can be accused of is waterboarding swine. KSM and his ilk ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS. They are swine (apologies to all the cute, pink, curly-tailed pigs).

These traitors are probably not liberals but stalinist leftists who want the nation to be brought down to its knees. They ignore the daily threats for the Muslims who pray for our destruction daily. I am not sure why they would want to live in a commmunistic system or a islamic republic but it stretches my imagination why.

garydt on April 30, 2009 at 11:06 PM

This seems to be a pattern with our government here lately. Drum up some anger and outrage at some bit players while quietly going about the business of socializing our banks and industries; all the while using fear and misery to attempt to generate some support for its health care and energy “hostile takeover bids” (using totally bogus logic, I might add.)
