Snowe fails her own GOP litmus test

Yeah – she’s a solid “Reagan Warrior” … or something.

AYUH. That’s Maine-speak for “absolutely correct”.

When I was in Maine last fall, Del, I’m pretty sure that’s what the service station attendant offered to put in my tire that was low.

The other reason I don’t buy her crap is that I’m a libertarian Republican. I disagree with conservatives on everything from abortion and borders to yaks and zygotes. Still, I find many more points of agreement and have no difficulty sharing a party with them.

No, the difference is not ideological between conservatives and moderates. It is institutional between congress critters and the people. There are a lot more Republican senators and reps whose views are out of whack. The sooner we get them either out or on track, the better.

My own representative, Michael Burgess, spoke at the Tea Party in Denton, TX, saying, “My job is not to represent Washington to you. It is to represent you to Washington.” That’s what he has done, and that’s what a lot of the others need to learn.

People forget Reagan raised taxes after first lowering them. he was no more ideologically pure than any other politician. He might have voted for the porkulus if it was politically savvy to do so, like any other politician would.

The top tax rate fell from 70 percent in 1980 to 28 percent in 1988 during the Reagan years.

I’m a linear reader, and the timing of the first Chrysler bailout is something on the top of my head. Mea culpa.

There’s an interesting graphic over at Slate I got pointed to which shows the relationships of the 99 Senators bassed on 65% vote commonality this session. Snowe (and to a lesser extent, Collins) have more Democratic friends than Republican ones.

Related to that, last month, I took a look at the 10 points where the Republicans could have stopped the Dem onslaught under the 3/5ths rule. Specter and Snowe voted to sabotage the firewall 9 times apiece; the difference is Specter attempted to make the total failure rate 100% instead of 90%.

No biggie here. I had to look it up to be sure I remembered correctly. I haven’t searched this out, but I seem to remember Reagan having to dance a little around the issue during/after the election season due to the timing of it all.

I agree the govt. should stay out of these kinds of issues. Life is messy, though, and sometimes we all make dumb choices.

Chrysler was bailed out, during the Reagan administration. And, I was against it, then. If you can’t compete in a free market, then, see ya. Let the bodies hit the floor. State intervention in the private sector is State control over the private sector….

Point of order; it was late 1979 when Chrysler sought their first bailout, early 1980 when Carter signed the enabling legislation, and 1982 when Chrysler repaid that loan early.

Just goes to show that intelligence is not required to serve in office.

LIke Specter, it can’t be that she is out of touch with Republican voters …. no, the problem has to be them.

The Snowes, Specters and, yes, Frums of the world want the Republican Party to ‘moderate’ to the point where the only difference between Republicans & Democrats is the color of our jerseys.

Someone needs to tell us why a Republican Party post “Snowe/Specter/Frum-izing” will be worth the time and trouble to support.

“Providing employment opportunities for the likes of Snowe, et al.” won’t cut it.

Eventually an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress would show its true colors, and Americans would see them for what they are.

At least, that’s the way some are hoping it will happen, but by the time some Americans come around, we may be a full-blown socialist nation.

Thanks, I think Americans are already reacting to your first point. While Obama’s polling numbers remain high, some of his policies are now polling with majority opposition.

Your second point is what I fear most. This is why I have always voted for the “lesser of two evils,” instead of sitting out an election, when i really didn’t have a candidate I felt comfortable supporting. I don’t want to live through the leftists achieving their full agenda.

10% of republican voters STAYED HOME for the last election. People in Maine vote for you due to your party affiliation as much as anything else. Next cycle if you face someone with actual principles you will get your CLOCK CLEANED.
