Quote of the day

posted at 10:45 pm on April 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

“His statement speaks volumes about the kind of party the GOP has now become. Sen. Specter’s voting record may not please many Republicans all the time. But you can’t avoid the fact that he’s been re-elected four times—his votes clearly mean something to the people of Pennsylvania. Steele also ignored the real opportunity Specter’s decision presented. The chairman could have dealt with the real issues plaguing the GOP, perhaps by saying something like this:

“It is unfortunate Senator Specter has decided to leave the Republican Party he has called home for decades. It’s also unfortunate that he most likely did so for political purposes. But we will use this as an opportunity to acknowledge today’s GOP has its work cut out for it. We clearly need to work on defining who we are, not just by our words, but by our actions. This is how we will reverse the shrinking of our ranks and invite old and new members to the table so that Republicans’ core goals can help lead America once again.”

Why is she in the new so much lately? Is she being groomed for something. Or is the MSM trying to foist her on us as the new look of conservatism? We all remember how well that worked out with her father.

If Specter was seriously such an Independent, he should have become an Independent instead of a democrat. We all know why he didn’t…well…except maybe for Les McCains, Grahamnesty, Frum, etc…

SouthernGent on April 29, 2009 at 10:50 PM

…we will use this as an opportunity to acknowledge today’s GOP has its work cut out for it. We clearly need to work on defining who we are, not just by our words, but by our actions.

Amen to that.

I’ve been saying this for months now. We need to come together. As a party, as conservatives, as Americans.

And let actions speak volumes over words. Then, and only then, will “Republican” mean something great in Washington again.

JetBoy on April 29, 2009 at 10:52 PM

There she is again–the media’s new favorite GOP interview & writer, who can give us all of her wisdom and insight based on her experience of being a Republican for some 10 months now.

Honestly, her hubris is on a par with Arlen’s.

INC on April 29, 2009 at 10:52 PM

Like totally! As long as they have an R next to ‘em that’s all that matters. We need more Ralph Nader supporters in the party too! We may not agree with them on everything, but as long as they represent their constituents.

also, i went to the manhattan institute dinner tonight, honoring ray kelly and henry kissinger. dr. kissinger told us tonight (among other things) that, “we cannot debate the merits of diplomacy…but we can debate their ends.” lets take note when we debate such matters :-)

We clearly need to work on defining who we are, not just by our words, but by our actions.

And Arlen Spectre’s actions on porkulus clearly define him as someone who doesn’t belong in the Republican Party. It’s politicians like him that have actually caused the party to loose it’s bearings.

We need to attract more centrist and progressive conservative voters…

WTF is this girl talking about?

WTF is a “progressive conservative”?

Specter couldn’t be more “centrist”, and took every opportunity he could to screw the GOP and conservatives over that he could.

But Specter has never shied away from putting the needs of his constituents first…

Except for abandoning those same constituents for the opposition? Ms. McCain can’t possibly be this stupid.

His votes mean something to the people of Pennsylvania…

If Specter gave a rats ass about anyone but himself, he wouldn’t have jumped parties you moronic twit! She doesn’t even see the contradictions in her own writing referring to them time and time again.

His constituents voted for him four times? So what? All this really does is call into question the intelligence of Specters former constituents. You almost have to feel these people had it coming. They voted for this a-hat four times and he has repaid them for their folly.

Ms. McCain is hardly a pundit and her analysis is bass-ackwards. She needs to stick to something she may be good at. At the moment, I wouldn’t know what that would be…

The GOP is simply going to have to be Big Tent like Reagan wanted (isn’t that what we’re told?). It’s simply going to have to be pro-Big Government, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro-gun control, pro-soak-the-rich…then Democrats can choose the real lefties over the fake ones.

MegMac writes in her predictable little piece,

It’s too bad, because the party needs brave, articulate leaders who can balance a strong stance for core Republican beliefs with an inclusive message aimed at the electorate.

What core values? Fiscal discipline? Specter violated that with the Stimulus Bill. If a Republican is “progressive” on both fiscal and social issues, why are they a Republican? A love of elephants?

BO got elected for a lot of different reasons – the main one being that he kept his real agenda hidden. The Obama voters may be stupid, but that doesn’t mean they are all Demo.

Exactly. Thanks to the complicit, bum-kissing Obamaholic media, a red-diaper baby anti-American ignorant socialist with close ties to fellow travelers and domestic terrorists who even detailed his associates and shared sentiments in two autobiographies (which he even recorded to audiotape) was able to run as a fiscal conservative and a “new” kind of politician. He didn’t win by stating his true beliefs, history or agenda. He won by walking around reading speeches that conveyed nothing logically coherent, when taken as a whole, and appealing to people’s emotions and hopes rather than to facts.

Americans would never knowingly elect a hard-leftist to national office. They never have before. Unfortunately, this current crop of statists are trying to redefine what it means to be an American voter by welcoming an influx of uneducated illegal immigrants – who will deliberately be left ignorant of the history of our nation and our revolutionary founding principles – and by increasing the percentage of citizens (both domestic and imported) who pay little to no taxes and feel that they are entirely dependent on government entitlement programs.

That’s why we need to speak out against this destructive power grab and educate our neighbors and friends before it’s too late. 2010 and 2012 are going to be pivotal elections.

Specter’s votes may “mean something to the people of Pennsylvania,” but apparently their votes for Toomey mean nothing to him.

By the way, do all the people who donated money to Specter’s huge campaign war chest get a refund, now that he switched to the party they were donating money to defeat?

You can’t deny the brilliance of Meg’s political advice: a political party always brings in scads of voters by agreeing with the most vicious criticism of its opponents, conceding that its most stalwart supporters are hateful idiots, and announcing that it needs some time alone to find itself. Meg also thinks it would be a great idea to loan a pile of money to a friend that’s about to go into drug rehab, and told the police you were one of his dealers.

I agree with Meg that we Republicans need to define who we are. I just disagree that we should then immediately apologize for who we are, and ask our opponents if they would like to define us, in the hopes they will do a better job. Here are a few definitions for Ms. McCain to consider:

We are the people who believe our children should be provided for and encouraged, not enslaved to pay for our indulgences.

We are the people who support and revere the men and women who sacrifice everything to protect us… and we support what they do. The harder their task, the more we support them.

We respect and honor the traditions passed down to us across centuries, and we don’t think every aspect of normal peoples’ lives is presumptively defective, or subject to deconstruction.

We believe we can celebrate what we hold dear, without automatically insulting those who don’t wish to join us.

We think free men and women, using their ingenuity and ambition to solve the problems of life, will *always* do a better job than the government.

We believe the purpose of government is to promote confidence among consumers and producers, not dominate and replace them. We say that government cannot be both a referee, and a player in the game. We demand the right to take risks in the pursuit of reward. We do not define our worth as the portion of our income the government doesn’t think it needs at the moment.

We believe government should be restrained. We think any government official, of any rank, who tells a private citizen he is compelled to accept government money belongs in a prison cell, not a cabinet seat. We do not intend to allow politicians to dictate the length and quality of our lives. We maintain that government should be the first to tighten its belt in tough times. We think the proper way to “stimulate” an economy is to stop seizing the wealth of the people who participate in it. We say that national defense is the most important and solemn duty of the federal government, and therefore it is the LAST department that should see a cut in funding.

We strongly believe the legitimacy of our democracy is influenced by the integrity of our voting system. Voting fraud should be aggressively prosecuted and punished – no one involved in a voter fraud scam in 2008 has any business walking the streets as a free man or woman in 2012. We demand transparency in campaigning, and that any campaign which will not provide it should be ended immediately, without further discussion.

We believe that being an American requires more than simply standing in one of the 50 states. We take ALL of our laws seriously, including the laws governing immigration, the laws punishing political corruption, and the laws against perjury. We do not believe the enforcement of these laws varies, depending on political rank and party affiliation.

I think we can find enough politicians to meet those definitions, and rally enough voters behind them to get them elected. We can do without Arlen Specter.

Da GOP should have listened to me and kicked Specter the @#$! out. Instead they waited until he could make us look like a bunch of Bawney Fwanks.

First we went for Specter. Next we will go after the beltway insiders.

The dreams about making love to Obama.

The right dreams about making love to Palin.

And AP dreams about perpetual bliss with Meghan McPain.

Makes sense to me.

Meghan McCain is proof that a girl needs a lot more than good looks to land an intelligent man. A smart guy realizes that he has to get out of bed sometime … /sarc
