Quote of the day
posted at 10:45 pm on April 29, 2009 by Allahpundit
“His statement speaks volumes about the kind of party the GOP has now become. Sen. Specter’s voting record may not please many Republicans all the time. But you can’t avoid the fact that he’s been re-elected four times—his votes clearly mean something to the people of Pennsylvania. Steele also ignored the real opportunity Specter’s decision presented. The chairman could have dealt with the real issues plaguing the GOP, perhaps by saying something like this:
“It is unfortunate Senator Specter has decided to leave the Republican Party he has called home for decades. It’s also unfortunate that he most likely did so for political purposes. But we will use this as an opportunity to acknowledge today’s GOP has its work cut out for it. We clearly need to work on defining who we are, not just by our words, but by our actions. This is how we will reverse the shrinking of our ranks and invite old and new members to the table so that Republicans’ core goals can help lead America once again.”

Well at least one of you is honest about why you like that silly woman!
benny shakar on April 30, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Specter is an example of why term limits are important. He thinks he is more important than the office he holds. The man is 80 years old. You mean to tell me that there isn’t anyone at all any better than him in the entire state of Pennsylvania (D or R?)

Palin is not silly at all. I think she’s a very smart lady. Personally, I’d rather dream about a clone (an available clone – don’t want a married woman) of Michelle Malkin, but Palin is very seductive, and that is definitely part of her appeal.
Meghan, on the other hand, strikes me as the Britney Spears of fake Republicans. The sight of her could curdle fresh milk.
Daggett on April 30, 2009 at 1:08 AM
At the risk of facing the same fate that I met on LGF this web site is becoming sort of a “Touchy-Feely” thing with no clear direction. At some point in a MAN’s life there comes a time when he must decide if he is a principaled man or if he is a practical man. It is a tough decision because his entire life will be measured by his choice. Practicality is for economists, prinicapality is for statesmen. To say that the GOP should have kissed specter’s ass is the most un-Republican/Conservative statement I’ve ever heard. This man had an R beside his name that stood for Revolting! He had no principals when it came to judges or law and he had no principals when it came to the American people. This man/beast stood for himself! For you to say that the Republican should have wooed this asshole is disgraceful evem if it means another four years of rubber stamp obama.

Is the GOP going to let this woman define it? Does she really represent the core? If not, then find a way to shut her up. If she is right, then elect her chairman and give her a chance to rebuild the party her daddy nearly killed.

Doctor Zero -
Your post (Doctor Zero on April 30, 2009 at 12:24 AM) was without a doubt the most eloquent, thoughtful, well-reasoned arguments for the principles of conservatism i have ever read. Bravo, sir.
I consider it an honor to have you in our camp.
As Newt once said – and I know I’m misquoting him here – “We may not win many elections, we may not attract the young hip crowd, but we will always be the party known for our principles, our defense of traditions, and protection of our American values. When we debate liberals it will always be a one-sided fight, because we have the superior ideas.”
And as your post indicates, those are still winning ideas!

Whats her problem , mad cow decease or swine flu?
the_nile on April 30, 2009 at 3:00 AM
Has she ever been interviewed by a conservative or do her Democrat handlers believe she is not up to it?
After speaking so highly of Speck, basically saying he’s everything that is good about Republicans, doesn’t she have to be loyal to her own “principles” and endorse The Speck’s candidacy over a conservative Republican candidate now or does a letter in front of a candidate’s name mean more to her than her own beliefs?
I don’t think she can keep up this lame charade for long. She’ll try to keep up the charade until October 2010 at which time she’ll go on all the liberal talk shows saying that it pains her but she has no choice but to leave the party of her fodder. She’ll dab at her eyes with a kleenex.
Buddahpundit on April 30, 2009 at 3:02 AM
I wonder where Specter was when the Republicans were pushing out Pat Buchanan. I’m pretty sure Meagan’s daddy was one of the guys expressing concern about how the door swings.
Keep in mind that I have never once voted for Buchanan, but I still thought the collapse of the “big tent” was more on his side, Specter can cry about the shrinking all he wants but I doubt if he did any complaining then.

Specter leaving is a nice start, now if we can get the McCains, and the other RINOs to admit to their true affiliations we will really be moving in the right direction.
darktood on April 30, 2009 at 5:21 AM
Wow… that’s like the advice a g/f gives a b/f on how best to apologize. Does this chap really think Steele should have said, “This just shows how much we suck and how much we’re dying.”
Steele came out as confident and combative and I say good for him.

Could we just reject her and put her on /ignore now?

Damn.
Pardon the Decaf Typos.
seejanemom on April 30, 2009 at 6:42 AM
Allahpundit continues to be obsessed with what Meghan McCain says.
I don’t know why Meghan’s statement warranted being a “Quote of the Day” with the header “Heartache.” Her statement is an O.K. attempt to be classy about the fact that a four term U.S. Senator is leaving the GOP and to call upon the GOP to work to define itself. That sentiment could have been expressed without the swipe at RNC Chairman Steele, but overall it is better than the nonsense that Senators Voinovich and Hatch were saying.
Personally, I think that Specter has been around too long and that his views are far too liberal for the GOP of the future. Voting for Obama’s trillion dollar deficit spending and being essential to its passage puts Specter well outside where the GOP needs to be. Also, Specter refers to Roe v. Wade and abortion as being super precedent, and that too is well outside where the GOP of the future needs to be. So, let’s just focus on defining the GOP of the future to be a principled winner.
Phil Byler on April 30, 2009 at 7:10 AM
Unless the goal is to remain a national party. Without moderates the GOP is conceding a lot of states with a lot of electoral votes.
dedalus on April 30, 2009 at 7:12 AM
True that. But, I say get rid of Specter. He is no “moderate.” In our tent, moderates still believe in fiscal responsibility. Voting for the porkulus betrayed core values that conservatives share with “moderates” of the party. Like you said, thought, we need them to win.
Conservatives worry about them, as do I, but they can be corralled if we have strong conservative leadership; something we have no of right now. If we have strong conservatives who can prod the mods in the right direction, that’d be great, but instead of moderates we have real RINOs, and instead of strong conservatives, we have a bunch of whining bitches.
blatantblue on April 30, 2009 at 7:17 AM
Specter really is the singular case for term limits.
blatantblue on April 30, 2009 at 7:18 AM
No problem with that limited choice of words.
Allap gave 2 paragraphs, but Meghan never limits herself to 2 paragraph statements. But if Allap spilled the beans with the content of the surrounding context, he wouldn’t just be getting riled.
Anyone in doubt of what Allahpundit will look and sound like in a few decades, just another Specter spectacle.
And he’s Michelle Malkin’s favorite pet,
and she grooms him as progressive.
Larger context.
maverick muse on April 30, 2009 at 7:20 AM
John McCain made campaign pledges that he may have actually fulfilled IF elected potus. In his self contempt for losing, he’s also relieved himself of duty to any Republican fidelity. His daughter WOULD align with Specter, not out of respect for whatever good Specter may have accomplished once upon a time, but because Specter is another saboteur to destroy the GOP now. Birds of a feather. Meghan never was a Republican; she has always been her daddy’s little girl.
Allahpundit want to honor Specter, retrieve whatever great legislation he sponsored for public memory.
maverick muse on April 30, 2009 at 7:26 AM
This twit is getting altogether too much attention.
Republicans aren’t losing because their core beliefs are wrong, it’s because those in office have lost sight of those core beliefs. This isn’t a clear cut choice.
That and because Democrats are pandering to those who only take from government and society and never give anything back.
drjohn on April 30, 2009 at 7:28 AM
BRAVO! Now, if the RNC and GOP elites who poison conservatism could just have a microchip with these beliefs implanted into their pea brains, the republican party might just awaken out of it’s dirt nap.

Having Meghan McCain on our side is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Make that a paper knife.
Her little “Valley Girl” is just not ready for engagement in an intelligent argument. She should be a welcome member of the GOP, but, at this point, her views are very naive and childish.
hmmmm. What’s that saying about children being seen and not heard?

Little known, but the Chinese had already perfected gene mapping as far back as the 60′s.
They implanted a genetically manipulated ‘sleeper sperm’ in big Mac when he was a POW.
They had the ability to activate it remotely and did so in January of 1984.
We see the result of their evil plot today.
Do not allow this terrible plan to perpetuate!
Friends don’t let friends go fat.

Ms. McCain will soon achieve the age of thirty something, get married, have children, and her worldview will change.

I guess the fact that it was Republicans who actually, you know, elected him to office has no bearing.

Allah –
OK, I am formally requesting, in all seriousness, without sarcasm, what exactly are your motives with continually posting about Meghan McCain. Tell us. Do you think she is going to be a serious player in the future? Or do you just want to poke us all with a stick because you have no respect for us or this site. The first 3 times it was funny, the next 10 times may have been a little cute. Now it’s just obnoxious. Yesterday you told us to lighten up. Today, I’m asking you to wake up. We are sick of her. We think she is a joke. We think that anyone that takes her or her schtick seriously, or even pays attention to her, is a joke.
So, please, explain to us the importance of Meghan McCain once and for all. Please.

Remember Specter was a Democrat before he became a Republican before he returned to the Democrat party. Repubs saved his bacon 30 years ago and more lately in the last election. Now he is looking for the Dems to save his a$$. I’m with Rush, take the McCains with you Specter!

1-Where was she on 4-15?
2-Did she attend any Tea Parties in her area?
3-Are there any progressive libs?
4-Another one that must “hang the robe” is that Murtha. Specter, I will make sure does not get reelected.
5-Note that she does not refer to Obama as opening his Holy arms to receive his new disciple.
6-I REFUSE to comment on her again unless she dedicates 3 mins. of her inflated brain and attacks the current administration, AS SHE SHOULD IF SHE IS REALLY A REPUBLICAN.
7-Glenn Beck is discussing this right now (progressivism), not because of her but b/c of the press conference.

Slightly OT, but the RNC is apparently trying to hamstring Michael Steele.
Can’t copy the WashTimes piece for some reason, but it reports on a Steele email complaining about the transfer of some of his authority to RNC treasurer and executive committee.
Get on it, stat.

Maybe if we ignore Ms. McCain she’ll disappear, or follow Arlen Specter to the “cool” party. She wants a “big tent” with everyone in it (except conservatives that is) — there already is one, it’s called the Democratic party.
rcw on April 30, 2009 at 9:59 AM
Good bye, Arlen Specter. You have done nothing for humanity or yourself. You have been around the halls of power for too long. Fulfill your destiny as a lying, theiving Democrat. At last you are home.
BetseyRoss on April 30, 2009 at 10:02 AM
I think the “silly woman” is Meg Mac, not Sarah Palin.
Whether or not Sarah Palin can win a national election remains to be seen, but she has become Governor of Alaska by her own merit, hard work, toughness, intelligence, and integrity, not from her looks or her family.
Let’s face it, Meghan McCain would be an unknown confused centrist ditz without her father’s name and honorable service to his country. The media are feeding on her ignorance and desire for fame to trash her father’s name and party, and she is either too selfish or stupid to realize that she is being used.
The media trash Sarah Palin for a different reason–she is dangerous to their agenda–an unflinching conservative, strong, principled woman who was elected entirely on her own merits, and also relatively young and beautiful. She may have entered the national scene too early for her own good, before she knew how to handle the national media, which are much more hostile to Republicans than the Alaskan media. But she is still young, and has time to hone her skills before 2012, and she has overcome failure in the past, resigning in disgust from the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission, to later become Governor. She could rebound again.
As for Meghan McCain, she needs some time in the wilderness, out of the limelight, to get an education in the school of hard knocks, before she can go anywhere politically. Her father and Sarah Palin have already been there and done that.

TheUnrepentantGeek on April 30, 2009 at 12:04 PM
I honestly don’t get the connection between the party “losing it’s core values” ie drifting to the center with losing elections. Do you mean to suggest that the more moderate, or left leaning the party becomes, the less attractive it is to the swing voters, who occupy the middle, and who actually decide every election? How’s that? You expect to get moderates to vote R by being more “pure” while the center/swing is by definition not politically grounded and is swayed by ripples in the economy, difficult wars, climate change, and a rock star like POTUS. Politcs is a blood sport and power is more often won by simple and compelling narratives. Ironically fundemental truths and realities are irrelevant to the power and force of these narratives. This is distastful, but it’s a fact of life.
