Video: UAE sheikh tortures grain dealer for shortchanging him

A few days old but worth watching as a Rorschach: Torture opponents will see this as exactly the same thing as what we’re doing to KSM while torture proponents will see it as exponentially worse. Granted, we’re talking about a grain dealer, not the guy who planned 9/11; granted, we’re talking about beatings with a plank with a nail in it, not belly slaps; granted, we’re talking about suffering for its own sake, not to elicit information to prevent mass murder. But other than that, the similarities are eerie. Ross Douthat’s first column for the NYT laments the fact that Cheney didn’t run last year instead of McCain so that we could have had a clear debate on this subject, up or down at the ballot box. No worries — I think we’re about to have it anyway.
The audio’s not clear in some parts, but according to ABC, “a sound of breaking bones can be heard on the tape” in the scene involving the SUV. As you watch, bear in mind that the UAE is supposed to be one of the more modernized Arab states. Click the image to watch.

This is nothing compared to what went on in the Hitlerian concentration camps of the Bush-Cheney-Zionist cabal.

Turtler is a fairly recently arrived poster. Always smack dead on target.
Just don’t get in his way when he is on a roll. Gotta love him.

Excellent point. Unfortunately, those people only make those sorts of statements because they aren’t inclined to think critically in the first place, and they won’t understand what you meant, most likely.

The UAE is a cesspool of moral filth.

I’ve read all the comments, thank you Turtler, that was awesome perspective you gave. I just cannot bring myself to watch this.

Issa is the Arabic name for Jesus, FYI. Funny Tzetzes. Modern Islam at work, reminiscent of Saddam’s boys.

your welcome for sending that to you “A few days” ago.

I must admit, I put those examples you gave as coming under corporal punishment – not torture.
OldEnglish on April 27, 2009 at 10:36 PM
That was sort of my point. If any of those punishments were inflicted today on our enemies they most certainly would be considered torture by our current standards.

I don’t know what disturbs me more: the video itself, or the comments from Muslim apologists on the ABC site who either excuse the barbarity or try to claim that it’s nothing worst than anything done at Gitmo. Frank Zappa once said that the most abundant element in the universe isn’t hydrogen, it’s stupidity. He was damn right.

I just wanted to emphasize this. We have to be perfect, everyone else can be jackasses.
Now. I have no problem with criticism of my country, it deserves plenty. But you’re implying it should be destroyed (not deserving defense) if it’s not absolutely morally perfect. You haven’t conceded a single circumstance otherwise, that’s the absolute implication of your argument.
I don’t know if you’ve never had to make a hard decision in a place and time that didn’t allow the best possible outcome, or if you’re just a rampaging hypocrite, and I don’t really care. You are the epitome of the quote “the perfect has become the enemy of the good.”
Your imaginary perfect world has so superceded reality in your mind that good isn’t worth defending because it isn’t perfect. Meditate on that, or just ignore it like you do everything else that doesn’t fit your preconceptions, doesn’t really make any difference.
Merovign on April 28, 2009 at 12:32 AM
Ok you more-moral-than-thou lefties:
If you had detained someone who could tell you how to stop the murder of thousands of your fellow citizens and you failed to try everything in your power to make him talk, where is the morality in that? Wouldn’t you actually be guilty of helping to kill those people?
Those who deliberately fail to defend America are nothing but Al Qaeda accomplices. No morality in that: it’s a “Bad Samaritan” move which just demonstrates how selfish and uncaring the left really is.

Wait a minute……….this is not torture………torture is putting a lacy pair of pink panties on some Arab terrorists while he eats his shrimp salad in an air conditioned cell on the beach in Cuba……………..
