Smart power: White House freaks out New York with low altitude fly-by; Video: Panicked NYers run in the streets; Update: Obama “furious”

I didn’t hear it this morning but I used to work in lower Manhattan and can assure you that workers these days are highly attuned to unusual air traffic in the area. Not a day has passed in seven-plus years, I think, that an airplane has flown low enough overhead that I could hear it, even just barely, and I didn’t look up. Just watching the video, I could feel the blood drain from my face.
Good work, Pentagon.
An Air Force One lookalike and two F-16s buzzed the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor this morning, halting work on nearby construction sites, causing resident and office workers to flee their high-rises and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey a major fright. At least two people were treated for minor injuries at Jersey City Medical Center after falling during the rush to exit their high-rises.
“Everybody panicked,” said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. “Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I’m devastated…Everybody was running, we didn’t know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again.”…
A Pentagon official confirmed that while the Presidential Airlift Group, which is based out of Andrews Air Force Base, did inform the FAA and New York City officials about this morning’s aerial photo op. But they also told both agencies not to inform the public about it. The NYPD confirmed this.
Not sure how or why The One would be responsible for this, but since the left’s being extra-jerky with its fingerpointing today, feel free to put forth your theory in the comments of What This Tells Us About How Obama Views the World. Evidence of his pre-9/11 mentality? Proof of a narcissism so profound as to blind him to American fears? Suggestive of a military that’s out of control under his weak command? Go crazy!
Update: Looks like this did come from the White House after all.
White House Military Office director Louis Caldera issued a brief statement.
“Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision,” he said. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”…
An administration official said the Federal Aviation Administration was informed this would be taking places, and notified Mr. Bloomberg’s office on April 22.
The problem was the FAA was told the information was classified and did not alert the press to warn the public.
Follow the link for obligatory outrage from Bloomberg and Schumer, who’s blaming the FAA in order to cover Obama’s ass.
Update: Here’s the best clip yet of how horrifying this looked and sounded from the ground. Unbelievable.
Update: Changed the headline to emphasize that it was Team Barry, not the Pentagon, that blew this. He’s not happy about it, either:
When President Obama was told about the incident, he was “furious,” a White House official says.
Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.
“It didn’t sound like a fun meeting,” the White House official says.

Does AF-1 carry out any “mission” without WH approval?

“This isn’t about terrorism. This isn’t about another attack on American soil killing thousands of innocent people. This is about a black man being in the White House. All those people screaming, crying, running away in terror — that’s racism straight-up.”
– Janeane Garofalo

A goldfish, or a pet rock, would at least only commit errors of omission. Obama commits plenty of those, but also makes errors of comission with nearly everything he does.
hawksruleva on April 28, 2009 at 9:26 AM
Yes. Here in Roanoke, Air Force One and Two come by on occasion to practice short field take-offs and landings. We’ve got mountains around our airport, so it’s a nice challenge for them. I’m sure Barry doesn’t approve each one of those training sessions.

jediwebdude on April 28, 2009 at 9:32 AM
This had better be a RNC ad. This is representative of what lousy decisions are coming out of the WH. Big change! There is no “war on terror” because we use terror in the US to control our own.
Talk about unintended consequences. This one takes the cake. But it is only 100 days, it makes me fear (terror again) what’s next.
ORconservative on April 28, 2009 at 9:43 AM
I can’t decide which would be worse, firing Caldera or doing nothing.
Caldera would just be a fall guy, yet doing nothing underlines how self centered those assholes are.
ORconservative on April 28, 2009 at 9:45 AM
Well, obviously routine maintenance and training would go on without the WH getting involved. What went on yesterday was not in any way “routine”. What was the intended purpose of this “photo op”? What did PBO know and when did he know it?
muggedbyreality on April 28, 2009 at 9:45 AM
If a private corporation had been responsible for something like this, would we be satisfied to learn some flunky six levels down the org chart had been fired, and congratulate the CEO for joining us in being “furious?” Of course not. We would not rest until the top executives responsible for green-lighting this idiotic stunt had been fired, and most likely brought up on criminal charges.
Let this be a “teachable moment” for anyone still foolish enough to believe the government should be running industries, financial institutions, or health care. When a private company does something stupid, wasteful, or dangerous, the government will step in to punish them, if the markets don’t get to them first. When the government does something stupid, you get a blizzard of evasions, lies, and perhaps a sacrificial flunky or two, before the government pronounces itself innocent – and having suffered nothing, learned nothing, and lost nothing, moves on to make the next terrible mistake.
What you’re seeing today is a taste of what you’ll get if you let these people seize control of your health care, and kill off your loved ones through rationing and substandard care: a statement carefully explaining they did nothing wrong, followed by a desperate attempt to change the subject, perhaps capped off with a faceless, expendable functionary going under the bus. If you’re not satisfied with that, a gang of apparatchiks will turn up on blogs and media interviews, and begin wondering what the hell is wrong with you.

So this wonderful Administration de-classifies information on the limits of enhanced interrogation techniques, telling our enemies exactly what they need to endure to avoid spilling the beans on terror attacks, but if the President’s plane and two military fighters fly low over a frightened city, it’s such a big secret that they can’t reassure anxious New Yorkers?
Reassure the terrorists, frighten our own people needlessly. Nice job, ZerObama.
Besides, what WAS the point of a low flight over the Statue of Liberty?
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s StupidMan!

Question:
Could the photos taken of Air Force One over Lower Manhattan yesterday be considered torture photos?
Seeing how the people reacted they should be. Will Prompterbama release these torture photos like the 200 he is intending to release to embarrass the Bush Administration?
I wonder what the TOTUS thinks?

So, they wanted a picture of 0’s new ride with the Statue of Liberty in the background because it would look really cool on the website?
Question: Have the geniuses running out country really never heard of Photoshop? An eigth-grader with a Mac could have produced the picture they wanted in about 10 minutes.
Another question: How many injuries and heart attacks occurred among the people scrambling to get out of tall buildings, thinking their lives were in danger?
iurockhead on April 28, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Sorry, I should read previous comments before jumping in. Still a good question.

If there is a mountain out there of incompetency and insensitivity, this WH has summited and planted its flag…I have friends working in the downtown Jersey City area (480 Washington Blvd. Cushman Wakefield/UBS building to be exact)who were evacuated from their offices. They said an old guy had to be hospitalized for having a heart attack. Totally disgusted…Caldera should lose his job and the prez should apologize like he really means it.
RepubChica on April 28, 2009 at 10:33 AM
You know, I saw this yesterday and thought it was just stunning. I watched the video and my jaw dropped to the floor at who could have been soooooo ignorant and insensitive to have thought this was a good idea. My second thought was that it was just another example of the administration’s arrogance. I decided that maybe I wouldn’t rush to judgment and give them the benefit of a doubt. Now, surprise, surprise, it came perhaps not from the Arrogant One himself, but within the walls of his administration. You can’t just apologize for something that stupid. I don’t even live in New York, never have, but it’s an outrage to me regardless.

An excellent question. But that would require using common sense. Why create a computer generated photo when you can go for a joy flight around Manhattan endangering and horrifying thousands of citizens, not to mention spending thousands on fuel? Mind boggling. Now we can not only never forget 9/11, we can always remember the idiots who did this.

As my wife, who is not a news junkie, said this morning…..why does Obama think we need a flyby of NY to remind us of the war on terror? I thought the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were doing that?
To the layman the logical conclusion would be that ChimpyO was trying to remind us that 9/11 really, really did happen.
And it also exposes the mentality of ChimpyO and his ilk on the left. They actually pull stunts like this because they ignore the threat, and realities in general, because it gets in the way of their Marxist Utopian dream.
This is the proof that liberals are psychologically damaged.
csdeven on April 28, 2009 at 10:46 AM

Someone above mentioned that this was done to film new stock footage of AF1 flying over national monuments that were filmed long time ago. Well that makes sense. Do you think the WH will photoshop out the screaming crowds on the ground, or leave them in? Obama’s personal copy may leave them in, and then he will autograph them and give them out to the world leaders who are thinking that Obama is the most flaccid leader they have ever met, to show them just how tough he really is. Even Kim Jong Il or Ahmadinijad can’t make thousands run screaming through their streets.
caygeon on April 28, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Wow … people are still that scared? That’s pretty sad all by itself. Or did it really look that bad? Do people feel less secure under the Obama administration, or was the harm to the psyche of New York in general greater than I had realized?
TheUnrepentantGeek on April 28, 2009 at 11:20 AM
This may also be because the previous white house weighed the need for more stock footage against the sensitivities of New Yorkers still traumatized by 9/11, and choose (rightly) not to approve the mission.

Well first off, everyone’s retirement accounts have already been cut in 1/2, that is if you believed your so-called expert financial adviser and invested in US stocks over the past 2 years. If you’re invested in stocks, there is always a risk. Don’t like risk, get a CD. Third, were retirements crushed after 9/11? For about a week or two. The bull market of the mid 00s started less than a year after 9/11. In the grand scheme of things, 9/11 was almost a non-event as far as retirement funds go.

Good one! LOL!
To all you Leftists yahoos trying to justify this and claim we of the GOP stripe DID NOT object to Republican waste; blow it out your asses! We for the most part, and in large number, screamed our heads off about Bush over spending, and the wasteful moves of ALL Congressmen acting irresponsible with OUR money. You just could not hear us for all the LEFTIST MSLSD types drowning out our voices. See WE on the Right are not as biased and lunatic like as most of the Left. I give you as an example, all of the KOS and those like Janine Garroffalo. We are not THAT one sided and we call a spade, a spade no matter WHO it is. Which is why we have principles and the extreme Leftists are just in it for themselves and without principles.
I would like to also see the manifest of WHO was on this plane while scaring the hell out of everyone. And I hear Caldera was Secretary of the Army under Clinton. He should have known better!

If nothing happens beyond Louis Caldera’s apology for approving the mission, and we get no info about who asked for it and why, then we know someone “important” was involved in the decision making. (BTW, “Caldera” is a “pot for boiling” or a “cauldron” in Spanish. I don’t know why, but that makes me smile.)

HUMAN EVENTS has learned from staff sources that Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa) is about to announce his switch to the Democratic Party

You realize that these things are also able to be edited? Look at some of the work coming out of special effects studios today. A decent photoshop artist can make an image that is virtually indistinguishable from a real image.

His conscience should be better; he has always been a Democrat.

Ah, the Liberal telling the Conservative to “get over it” when it comes to fiscal sanity…
How… predictable…
As to the Global Warming, its YOUR folks who are pushing this whole CO2 thing… even at this moment in Congress… but I guess you are OK with blatant Hypocracy as long as its coming from the side of the Annointed One!
/shakes his head and wanders out of the thread…. just wasting my time here….

Do you believe all past POTUS administrations have wasted taxpayer money filming AF-1? Or just this one? you see, that would actually be hypocrisy.
I begrudgingly accept the need to have the footage. It annoys me, but hey waddayagonna do. So no, there is no blatant hypocrisy here. Sorry to pi$$ on your gotcha parade.

Dave’s not without his uses. He’s a good example of the perfect serf – the kind of unquestioning, credulous subject that every absolute ruler loves to have. His remarkably low standards for the man who would claim total power and control over the entire U.S. economy illustrate how some people just haven’t thought the whole socialism / fascism model through. He’s also deposited a series of posts in the last hour that summarize the various spins Obamabots will use to excuse the Dear Leader, none of which should be terribly comforting in light of the economic and legal power Obama believes he is entitled to claim…
Obama is helpless and ignorant:

Leave it to Chucky Schumer to blame the FAA when the call came from The White House. The guy couldn’t tell you what he had for breakfast without dissembling, distorting, or flat-out lying.

If so then there should be an immediate election and he should have to re-win his constituents’ support.

update:
Jack Tapper is ABC News’ Senior White House Correspondent based in the network’s Washington bureau. He writes about politics and popular culture and covers a range of national stories.
[Jack Tapper, a] White House official tells ABC News that President Obama was “furious” to hear about the incident this morning when Air Force One and Air Force fighter jets appeared to be flying into the Manhattan skyline, scaring many New Yorkers into thinking they were about to face another terrorist attack.
An explanation was forthcoming in a mea culpa statement issued from the White House.
“Last week, I approved a mission over New York,” Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office, said. “I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”
Typical non-apology, sorry he got his ass fried.
Caldera lies, effectively blaming the state and local authorities in NY and NJ whom he claims that federal authorities notified. The NYC Mayor was not notified.
The Military never break protocol unless under direct orders from the President. No one takes an Airforce One for a flight over NYC without the consent of the presidency that includes Homeland Security Napolitano official approval. Obama is furious because his ass in the sky was not worshiped by the public who found his obsession with excess abhorrent. This presidency’s motive is to make the public take offense of “right wing military” personnel.

Then talk to Industrial Light and Magic. Wonder what the cost effectiveness would be to hire them vs the cost of flying the plane over NYC?

IF so,
No need for Cornyn’s endorsement now.
At least the GOP can run a conservative on the ticket.

It’s not that simple to just take footage of a freaking plane against a blue sky of size X shot from angle Y and a distance Z and manipulate X and Z then slap it into footage of the Statue of Liberty shot at size A, angle B and distance C -AND – the footage of the Statue of Liberty is MOVING.
You could spend weeks working on it and it would still. Look. Like. Sh1t.
The reason why ILM does such a great job is because THEY HAVE CONTROL OVER X, Y, Z, A, B, C.
