Smart power: White House freaks out New York with low altitude fly-by; Video: Panicked NYers run in the streets; Update: Obama “furious”

I didn’t hear it this morning but I used to work in lower Manhattan and can assure you that workers these days are highly attuned to unusual air traffic in the area. Not a day has passed in seven-plus years, I think, that an airplane has flown low enough overhead that I could hear it, even just barely, and I didn’t look up. Just watching the video, I could feel the blood drain from my face.
Good work, Pentagon.
An Air Force One lookalike and two F-16s buzzed the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor this morning, halting work on nearby construction sites, causing resident and office workers to flee their high-rises and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey a major fright. At least two people were treated for minor injuries at Jersey City Medical Center after falling during the rush to exit their high-rises.
“Everybody panicked,” said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. “Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I’m devastated…Everybody was running, we didn’t know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again.”…
A Pentagon official confirmed that while the Presidential Airlift Group, which is based out of Andrews Air Force Base, did inform the FAA and New York City officials about this morning’s aerial photo op. But they also told both agencies not to inform the public about it. The NYPD confirmed this.
Not sure how or why The One would be responsible for this, but since the left’s being extra-jerky with its fingerpointing today, feel free to put forth your theory in the comments of What This Tells Us About How Obama Views the World. Evidence of his pre-9/11 mentality? Proof of a narcissism so profound as to blind him to American fears? Suggestive of a military that’s out of control under his weak command? Go crazy!
Update: Looks like this did come from the White House after all.
White House Military Office director Louis Caldera issued a brief statement.
“Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision,” he said. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”…
An administration official said the Federal Aviation Administration was informed this would be taking places, and notified Mr. Bloomberg’s office on April 22.
The problem was the FAA was told the information was classified and did not alert the press to warn the public.
Follow the link for obligatory outrage from Bloomberg and Schumer, who’s blaming the FAA in order to cover Obama’s ass.
Update: Here’s the best clip yet of how horrifying this looked and sounded from the ground. Unbelievable.
Update: Changed the headline to emphasize that it was Team Barry, not the Pentagon, that blew this. He’s not happy about it, either:
When President Obama was told about the incident, he was “furious,” a White House official says.
Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.
“It didn’t sound like a fun meeting,” the White House official says.

Don’t know if this was covered but what was the point of this excercise?
Was he making a campaign commercial? More Obama propaganda for our TV viewing?
What the hell is this a$$hole up to?
Of course he knew about it and never thought about what it would do to the people of NY.
This pisses me OOOFFFFF!!
More tax payer money up in flames for his STUPID never ending campaign!!!

Don’t tell me that narcissistic ashwipe didn’t know about it. He just doesn’t want to own that one.

Will Al Gore protest this HUGE waste of fuel?
Will Chuck Schumer complain that this stunt scared the daylights out of New Yorkers?
Will the WH Economic team scream about the unbelievable waste of money?

It’s funny, because they didn’t have any problem whipping up fake Precedential Seals during the campaign. I’m sure those whiz-kids are still on the payroll. I always got the feeling they were the ones tasked with the ‘reset’ button.
Think about it: We gave “The Button” to Russia, mislabeled “overcharged”, as in ‘about to blow’, and scared the living sh!t out of New Yorkers by running the closest real-life reenactment of 9/11 (with the modern fighter add-on) as a little commercial. Wow. ShamWow!

Just last week a small plane flew over restricted air space in DC and the Capitol was evacuated and President TelePrompter scurried away for safety.
Did it not occur to Team Obama that low-flying planes in NY is NOT a good idea?
I miss the grown-ups!

Could the current occupants of the White House cut back to, say, one major screw-up a day, with a lull on Sunday so people can get at least one good night’s sleep a week?
I swear, if we’d elected a goldfish President we’d be better off today.
Merovign on April 28, 2009 at 12:06 AM
Barack Obama should be held accountable for this shameful episode by America, and he should resign for allowing this to happen.
BTW, where is the blathering idiot GotNoLife on this? He/she can now choke on his/her comment about adults being in charge.
This is the disgrace that all Americans share. They are responsible for the B.O. in Washington.

Photo Op…
Photo Op?
Photo Op?!?!
Are you telling me that there isn’t any stock footage of Air Force One flying around New York City?
Are you telling me that creating such footage is considered anything other than a waste of time and money?
A photo op…
I think this incident has become symbolic of everything that is wrong with this White House.

I can just see the conversations that will start to take place in New York soon among the liberals there:
A man confides to his friend:
“I hate to says this but… I felt safer when Bush was President.”
Once that starts becoming a common refrain- Obama will be toast.
Sackett on April 28, 2009 at 12:37 AM
This is what happens when a “community organizer” who never had a real job tries to run the country armed only with a Teleprompter and a mirror….

Bush is to blame. I’m not as ’smart’ as Obama to figure out why but he is-he’s got to be.
technopeasant on April 28, 2009 at 12:38 AM
No kidding.
I didn’t expect the media to hold the Fresh Prince of Bill Ayers accountable for anything at first. I didn’t expect it after even the first dozen gaffes.
But after over 100 screw-ups and insults, you’d think they’d get to the point where they wouldn’t just keep giving him a pass on every dangerous and idiotic thing he does.
But no — looks like the media is going to bend over for the full 4 years, if we last that long.
Daggett on April 28, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Exactly! I have repeated over and over, close to 3/4 of what this man has done in office since his inauguration would initiate at least a hearing on the constitutionality of his myriad decisions. Republicans are worried more about their poll numbers than they are in fighting for the country – pathetic!
Joe Pyne on April 28, 2009 at 12:45 AM
I guess that thousands and thousands of American citizens’ lives are not considered to be as important as those of the the traitorous scum who reside in our Congress and White House.
I often wonder how different their attitudes would have been if Flight 97 had plowed into Congress instead of that field in Pennsylvania.
TexasJew on April 28, 2009 at 12:46 AM
Just remember people when you elect a president you elect an administration. To what degree Obama is personally accountable is debateable, but there is no debate that this was an act of a childish and fundamentally unserious administration.
PackerBronco on April 28, 2009 at 12:47 AM
The anger and outrage over this stunt has united the posters on Hot Air like nothing I have seen since the amnesty nonsense.
God Bless you all! You give me hope.
Joe Pyne on April 28, 2009 at 12:58 AM
A week later all will be forgotten in NY and NJ and the Messiah will be forgiven. How do we know that? Well, Wolf Blitzer just told us.
technopeasant on April 28, 2009 at 1:02 AM
Maybe Obama just wanted to show off his new “pimped-out” airplane.
I guess those Air Force jets will remain on the payroll while Star Wars and the F-22’s are abandoned.
Gotta protect the “Big O”. Of course, the average American citizen’s safety is not important.
One question: why is anyone staying in the Armed Forces while serving under that pathetic slime mold?
TexasJew on April 28, 2009 at 1:09 AM
If it had not been for the planes showing up in the video towards the end,I would have guessed that all that panic was from President Bush setting a caterpillar down on the streets of NY.
I mean all we have heard for two weeks from liberals is how frightening and terrible actions like that were.
Don’t liberals constantly make fun of Conservatives for being worried about terrorism and doing what it takes to stop it.
“Go hide under your bed from the jihadist”
“your more likely to get struck by lightening, quit whining”.
NY being a blue state, the chances are high that a lot of the people running and screaming were democrats.
Go figure.
What are democrats like Schumer and Obama so mad about, didn’t their liberal hero Micheal Moore tell us
“THERE IS NO TERRORIST THREAT”.
I mean didn’t Bush do 9/11.
He is out of the White House now, does not have the power to pull off these attacks to get the worlds oil.
What are democrats scared about?
Look at this liberal poster:
Can you believe that democrats like Schumer and Obama
are upset about something so trivial as losing .01% of the population of New York.
Relax..the “smart ones are in charge”.
Quit being a bunch of pansies.
One “man made disaster here, one man made disaster there”,relax, what was everybody upset about.
Obama’s President,everybody loves him.
I mean come on,if 9/11 was so important,After 8 yrs.we would have a memorial and new buildings in place to show our respect and fortitude in coming back from the worst attack on American soil by now.
As it stands,it looks like New Orleans will be rebuilt before all the super smart democrats that run New York make any progress in rebuilding the symbol of American Economic strength and pride.
Look, as long as we stop terrorizing the jihadist with caterpillars,
quit pouring water over their faces,
quit listening to their phone calls,
quit air raiding their cities
and bombing their civilians,
quit supporting Israel,
let them know that “hope and change” is here in the time of Obama,
THEN WE HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.
Obama, hollywood, and their friends in the MSM told us so,so it must be so.
/sarcsm.

katy on April 28, 2009 at 1:23 AM
If it’s stupid and uncaring, and designed only to create publicity for the White House, you can bet that Obama’s fingerprints are all over it.
He’ll probably try to blame it on the military (as if they could send Air Force One on missions by themselves) and use it as an excuse to shut down a branch of our armed forces.

I’m sort of surprised this “pro-military” site with all it’s “super conservatives” doesn’t seem bothered that doofpundit, a chickenhawk who has never served, no doubt, had an initial gut reaction to blame the military.
I’m sure we can expect more from him in the future as Obama continues to use the military as a prop and fall guy. Might want to keep your animosity about the military to yourself, doofpundit, because if you express it around the wrong person in public they may just beat the doof out of you.

The irony is that when the next attack comes it will most likely be in an area that voted 75%+ for Obama like NYC, San Fran, LA. Elections have consequences and these douches will have to live with them. And I will have zero sympathy.

Your comment, while passionate, is a little misguided. Initial media reports did place the blame on the military, and some media outlets are still trying to hide any connection to the White House.

Obama’s only angry that people are angry. The thought that people in New York, one of his liberal strongholds, would be worried about terrorism probably never occurred to him or his staffers.
Gibbs was his usual artful self in answering questions.
I hope someone shows Obama the video of people evacuating their office buildings. But I’m sure he’ll never see that.
I’d also like to see another poll on waterboarding done after this. I bet a lot of New Yorkers might have a different take after a taste of what it felt like in the fall of 2001.

For sure. I’m sure their dream commercial combined images of George Bush, followed by people in chains, then a bright sunrise, followed by a picture of Obama, and Air Force one flying over the Statue of Liberty. Because George Bush was a force for opression. Unless you ask the dozens of millions of people who are freer because of him; but they don’t count, because the Dems haven’t bought their votes yet.
