Smart power: White House freaks out New York with low altitude fly-by; Video: Panicked NYers run in the streets; Update: Obama “furious”

posted at 5:00 pm on April 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

I didn’t hear it this morning but I used to work in lower Manhattan and can assure you that workers these days are highly attuned to unusual air traffic in the area. Not a day has passed in seven-plus years, I think, that an airplane has flown low enough overhead that I could hear it, even just barely, and I didn’t look up. Just watching the video, I could feel the blood drain from my face.

Good work, Pentagon.

An Air Force One lookalike and two F-16s buzzed the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor this morning, halting work on nearby construction sites, causing resident and office workers to flee their high-rises and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey a major fright. At least two people were treated for minor injuries at Jersey City Medical Center after falling during the rush to exit their high-rises.

“Everybody panicked,” said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. “Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I’m devastated…Everybody was running, we didn’t know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again.”…

A Pentagon official confirmed that while the Presidential Airlift Group, which is based out of Andrews Air Force Base, did inform the FAA and New York City officials about this morning’s aerial photo op. But they also told both agencies not to inform the public about it. The NYPD confirmed this.

Not sure how or why The One would be responsible for this, but since the left’s being extra-jerky with its fingerpointing today, feel free to put forth your theory in the comments of What This Tells Us About How Obama Views the World. Evidence of his pre-9/11 mentality? Proof of a narcissism so profound as to blind him to American fears? Suggestive of a military that’s out of control under his weak command? Go crazy!

Update: Looks like this did come from the White House after all.

White House Military Office director Louis Caldera issued a brief statement.

“Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision,” he said. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”…

An administration official said the Federal Aviation Administration was informed this would be taking places, and notified Mr. Bloomberg’s office on April 22.

The problem was the FAA was told the information was classified and did not alert the press to warn the public.

Follow the link for obligatory outrage from Bloomberg and Schumer, who’s blaming the FAA in order to cover Obama’s ass.

Update: Here’s the best clip yet of how horrifying this looked and sounded from the ground. Unbelievable.

Update: Changed the headline to emphasize that it was Team Barry, not the Pentagon, that blew this. He’s not happy about it, either:

When President Obama was told about the incident, he was “furious,” a White House official says.

Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.

“It didn’t sound like a fun meeting,” the White House official says.

Blowback

Gee. Strangely, I caught this part of today’s WH fool briefing, and Gibbs said he had not spoken with the WH about this.

Doesn’t he speak for the WH?

Also, he referred the reporters to direct their questions to the WH?

Again… doesn’t he speak for the WH?

AND, when the press called him on this, he responded that they, the press should contact DoD, to which they stated they’d just be referred back to him.

So, if Gibbs doesn’t speak for the WH, for whom does he speak?

madmonkphotog on April 27, 2009 at 5:28 PM

That’s going the limit even for Gibbs.

Even being so late to the party, I felt my pulse quicken while watching the last video. The people of New York (and, well, all of us really) deserve an explaination for this. Not just about why they weren’t informed, but what the hell the ‘photo-op’ was for in the first place.

Because honestly, I cannot think of a legitimate and decent reason to take pictures/shoot footage of a low-flying airliner flanked by military jets over NYC. I also wonder how much this stunt is going to cost in the end.

Anna on April 27, 2009 at 7:25 PM

What’s distressing is that when we are hit again by terrorists (and we will be), the whole Ogabe regime, and their concubines in the media, will rise up to blame Bush. It won’t matter that he kept the islamonazi turds at bay for seven years, he will be blamed. As much as I’ve grown to dislike GW for so many reasons, he doesn’t deserve this.

SKYFOX on April 27, 2009 at 7:26 PM

When President Obama was told about the incident, he was “furious,” a White House official says.

“Of course I was furious”, declared the President, when asked about the incident. “It turns out that this sort of photo-op had been done before. Like, seven years ago or something. I don’t know but, from what I understand, it really grabbed headlines for awhile. You don’t think people noticed the similarity, do you? It would be so embarrassing if the American people thought I was copying someone else’s idea. How lame would that be?”

As much as I despise that worthless prick Obama, I want to love this sentiment, but it’s just not true.

As I watched that third video, I had nothing but sympathy for every one of the people who took off in a panic. Can you just imagine what was going through their minds? Can you imagine the thousands of people who lost friends and family members, and looked up to see that jet and the fighter jets chasing it?

It makes me sick to think of it. And yes, Obama’s an idiot and has hired an entire administration of effing nitwits, tax cheats and America-haters.

“Jim Messina?” When did Loggins and Messina get clearance to go to the White House?

Anyway, what did the guy expect would happen? Why was he “furious?” Was he informed about this or not?

If not, why not? Is he the President or isn’t he? You mean to tell me the pentagon uses an Air Force One facsimile to circle New York City, and this guy had no clue?

If yes, then why did he do it? You mean he had no idea it would create the reaction it did? Is he really that stupid and careless? Seriously, this guy is our leader?

Logical Fallacy: Appeal to Ridicule

The Appeal to Ridicule is a fallacy in which ridicule or mockery is substituted for evidence in an “argument.” This line of “reasoning” has the following form:

1. X, which is some form of ridicule is presented (typically directed at the claim).
2. Therefore claim C is false.

This sort of “reasoning” is fallacious because mocking a claim does not show that it is false.

Imagine if a bank had done a flyover like this with their expensive corporate jet. Even if it had been perfectly legal and properly cleared with the FAA, the Left would be howling about the extravagance, the money wasted on fuel, and the abuse of the public airspace. If Obama is the CEO of General Motors and AIG now, why shouldn’t we expect him to behave with the humility and frugality we would demand of the private sector executives he displaced?

I agree with those who say this is a much more important story than a semi-whimsical “oopsie” moment. The stench of absolute incompetence radiating from every aspect of this Administration is becoming overwhelming. The image of Obama filling the sky over New York with a horrendously expensive display of top-shelf luxury jet transport, terrifying a city full of people with good reason to fear low-flying jet planes, is the perfect visual aid to illustrate the childishness, arrogance, and lack of historical awareness that characterizes this presidency.

It’s not like there are any pressing problems we could dedicate the supposedly scarce resources of this government to, right? If Obama’s so keen on flying airplanes over metropolitan skylines, maybe he could try doing it in the skies over Iran, and demand they give up their political hostage and nuclear ambitions. Maybe he could do it over the deep-water ports of Somalia, and frighten pirates instead of hot dog vendors. Maybe he could blow that jet fuel on a flyby of Pakistan, to let the Taliban know they’ve gotten as close to the Pakistani nuclear arsenal as they will ever get. Or maybe we should just demand this overgrown child make a list of a trillion dollars’ worth of state luxuries he can do without, and give that trillion bucks back to the future he stole it from.

Doctor Zero on April 27, 2009 at 8:25 PM

Update: Here’s the best clip yet of how horrifying this looked and sounded from the ground. Unbelievable.

That video made me tear up. I can only imagine how many shrinks got calls today over 9/11 PTSD flashbacks.

An explanation was forthcoming in a mea culpa statement issued from the White House:

“Last week, I approved a mission over New York,” Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office, said. “I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”

So, he let his staff take the fall and apologize rather than apologize for his staff and take responsibility for it (like a grown-up should).

For Obama, the buck stops over there.

NOTUS (Narcissist of the United States) celebrated his first 100 days by ordering a “fly by” of New York City………..

……….. seeing the panicked, scurrying crowds groveling and running for cover pleased him to no end.

Laughter was heard from the conference call of NOTUS to the Dictators of Latin America as he was overheard saying….

“Hey Fidel, you owe me fifty bucks………..

………. I told you I could do it!”

Seven Percent Solution on April 27, 2009 at 8:37 PM

The MSM would have gone ballistic if President Bush had been in Air Force One and they did this. There would have been calls to get rid of Air Force One, impeachment, ACLU lawsuits, etc.

As it is, yet another screw up for the Bowery Boys that will be excused.

Dr. ZhivBlago on April 27, 2009 at 8:38 PM

It’s just sickening to me how callous they were to the sensitivity of the NYC residents for this maneuver. Didn’t anyone think about how this would play out beforehand?

threeCents on April 27, 2009 at 8:38 PM

I just started reading the comments and assume I will find the answer in there somewhere but seriously is there a shortage of film footage of Air Force One? They did a whole show on it, couldn’t they do some slice and dice for whatever The Won’s needs?

Remember, though, this probably won’t even put a dent in most of NY’s faith in the Messiah. They’ll just blame the AF for it, like Obama did.

AUINSC on April 27, 2009 at 8:41 PM

If this was Bush, Olberdouche and Madcow would be DEMANDING he take responsibility.

Speedwagon82 on April 27, 2009 at 8:42 PM

If anyone saw the jets approaching on 9/11, that’s what it looked like. Exactly.

The day had a perfect sky too. I also especially remember the jets flying overhead on 9/11. Scared the hell out of me when one flew over my car.

Really bad move.

One question, why they did not use the weekend for the photo op?

El Coqui on April 27, 2009 at 8:42 PM

So, he let his staff take the fall and apologize rather than apologize for his staff and take responsibility for it (like a grown-up should).

Nope, Rae, he can’t do it. He has told us that he would “hit the ground running” when he took office. He told us he would take responsibility for running this government. He told us he, and he alone, was in charge.

No, sir, you knew about this, Mr. Obama, and you are going to take ownership for it. Otherwise, you will be (rightly) condemned for being an incompetent jerk!

Joe Pyne on April 27, 2009 at 8:43 PM

I don’t see what you little, insignificant, people are so upset about…he WON the election, after all…the US is now just HIS big toy box of play things to do with as he pleases…he can just break it all if he feels like it.

AUINSC on April 27, 2009 at 8:16 PM

O’bama claims to have been born, and then later spent part of his childhood in, Hawai’i. He obviously never heard the old talk story Christmas tale about the kid who “only” got the fishing pole.

All the other kids got toys, and they played with them 3 days and then they weere discared into the toy box.

This kid used his “toy” for years to come. And got to eat as a result.

Nothing wrong with toys, but there’s nothing wrong with morals or ethical standards either. Barry and gang sorely lack in the latter.

Del Dolemonte on April 27, 2009 at 8:45 PM

I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused

At what point will “I take responsibility” actually amount to anyone in government losing thier job? I know it must have started before her, but the earliest I can remember a pol going public and saying, “I take full responsibility” without losing thier job was Janet Reno after Waco. Since then, was there even one time a pol “took responsibility” and wound up in the unemployment line?

DrAllecon on April 27, 2009 at 8:46 PM

Based on that last vid, I guess the “mission” did create confusion and disruption. Who’da known?

Biggest loser running the biggest group of losers in the history of the US of A Obama needs to get TOTUS on this right away.

If I was Michael Steele, and Republican leadership, I would be all over this!

Force this guy to come out and make a statement. Don’t let him hide under the bed and let someone else take the fall.

Smoke him out, let’s see how he handles it on national tv.

El Coqui on April 27, 2009 at 8:42 PM

My guess is that this flight path took them particularly close to one of the busiest civilian airports in the world, Teterboro in northern New Jersey. It’s busy enough during the week, but add in all the Sunday fliers and it would have been a mess.

The guy O’bama replaced?

He ended up taking full responsibility for the false accusations that he alone was responsible for Hurricane Katrina, and also admitted responsibility for the no WMDs in Iraq.

I’m late to this story (just got off work) so I hope no one beat me to it but here goes…
4/27 was an inside job…

That wouldn’t be very ‘bi-partisan’ would it?

/sarc

Yeah, I agree, but there is a reason Republicans are on a losing streak…they are afraid of Obama…as sad as that is, with as much material he’s given would-be opponents, they still can’t figure out what to do with it…the Republican pols of 15 years ago would have cleaned Obama’s clock by now.

Oh.my.God. What utter disrespect for the people of New York. Have these idiots never heard of HELICOPTERS for picture shoots? I am appalled. My heart was in my throat watching that last video.

Can you only imagine had this been a Bush or McCain administration…

I hope the few real journalists left in America keep pushing this story and keep the images on national TV. If you haven’t actually watched the video clip, and you’re forming your opinion based on a still photo and verbal description of the incident, drop what you’re doing and watch the clip now. The F16 chasing the giant airplane is the ultimate perfect touch. The people in that video are scared out of their wits; it’s amazing none of the elderly people on the street had a heart attack.

If the MSM can bury that video, maybe they can rinse this out of the public awareness in the next news cycle… but watching the video makes you wonder why the networks aren’t carrying Obama’s televised resignation speech tonight, and covering the convening of the grand jury for his trial tomorrow.
