Smart power: White House freaks out New York with low altitude fly-by; Video: Panicked NYers run in the streets; Update: Obama “furious”

I didn’t hear it this morning but I used to work in lower Manhattan and can assure you that workers these days are highly attuned to unusual air traffic in the area. Not a day has passed in seven-plus years, I think, that an airplane has flown low enough overhead that I could hear it, even just barely, and I didn’t look up. Just watching the video, I could feel the blood drain from my face.
Good work, Pentagon.
An Air Force One lookalike and two F-16s buzzed the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor this morning, halting work on nearby construction sites, causing resident and office workers to flee their high-rises and giving thousands of people in downtown Manhattan and New Jersey a major fright. At least two people were treated for minor injuries at Jersey City Medical Center after falling during the rush to exit their high-rises.
“Everybody panicked,” said Daisy Cooper, a Merrill Lynch worker in Jersey City, who lost a nephew on 9/11. “Everybody was screaming and we all ran downstairs. I’m devastated…Everybody was running, we didn’t know why we were running. We just knew it was a plane, there we go, 9/11 again.”…
A Pentagon official confirmed that while the Presidential Airlift Group, which is based out of Andrews Air Force Base, did inform the FAA and New York City officials about this morning’s aerial photo op. But they also told both agencies not to inform the public about it. The NYPD confirmed this.
Not sure how or why The One would be responsible for this, but since the left’s being extra-jerky with its fingerpointing today, feel free to put forth your theory in the comments of What This Tells Us About How Obama Views the World. Evidence of his pre-9/11 mentality? Proof of a narcissism so profound as to blind him to American fears? Suggestive of a military that’s out of control under his weak command? Go crazy!
Update: Looks like this did come from the White House after all.
White House Military Office director Louis Caldera issued a brief statement.
“Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision,” he said. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”…
An administration official said the Federal Aviation Administration was informed this would be taking places, and notified Mr. Bloomberg’s office on April 22.
The problem was the FAA was told the information was classified and did not alert the press to warn the public.
Follow the link for obligatory outrage from Bloomberg and Schumer, who’s blaming the FAA in order to cover Obama’s ass.
Update: Here’s the best clip yet of how horrifying this looked and sounded from the ground. Unbelievable.
Update: Changed the headline to emphasize that it was Team Barry, not the Pentagon, that blew this. He’s not happy about it, either:
When President Obama was told about the incident, he was “furious,” a White House official says.
Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.
“It didn’t sound like a fun meeting,” the White House official says.

It wasn’t the Pentagon that ordered this, they had no knowledge of the fly by. This stunt came direct from the White House’ military section for some sort of advertising campaign.

Yeah, good idea. Because it’s not like New York might have any negative connotations attached to planes flying near its buildings. Does anyone in the administration have a brain?

I hear Obama ordered this for some photo op or something, besides all that is necessary is that he be President. After all Bush was blamed for everything from financial meltdowns to hurricanes. Now it is Barry’s turn to take the blame.

9/11 never really happened…the panic, the death, the fear, all exaggerated.
That is the mindset of the liberals…
And that is why it is no big deal that we have not been attacked for so many years, not because of President Bush…but because their was no real threat.

right2bright on April 27, 2009 at 5:10 PM

It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever for a photo-op. I don’t see anything logical from the fly-by as of yet.

I note that the original articles pointed the blame at the White House Military Office and described its function (basically controlled directly by Obama).
I note further that these articles are appearing to be scrubbed of such references…

Just another example of the failed policies of the obama administration.
Vashta.Nerada on April 27, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Was Obama waving to the people on the street?
Did the TOTUS skip, during the fly by?
upinak on April 27, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Of course it was Obama’s fault! It was a photo op! They were wanting to get a good picture of Air Force One along the NY skyline. Apparently, they didn’t know how to work with miniatures!
He is completely incompetent and arrogant, a bad combination.
PastorJon on April 27, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Just a beautiful sunny April day in 2009…what could go wrong?
This stunt will backfire on POTUS because it just conjured up very powerful images of the day that lefties would love to just sweep under the rug.

It was Air Force One* afterall…
All part of the 100 Days of his Excellency celebration
* Since Obama does not need earthly transportation at all times, this aircraft was not using the AirForce One designation, but it is one of the 747’s in the AirForce One fleet

OT but fun: Drudge says Fox won’t give Obama his requested prime time slot for the One’s news conference. (Not going to lose Sweeps Week and all that ad revenue?). As long as one network carries it (PBS being obvious choice) why should One object?

Our treasonous administration just wanted to make perfectly sure that everyone knew they were definitely in a 9/10 mode. They’ll be buzzing our buildings with airplanes over and over, now, just to show their solidarity with the poor muslim hordes. Shrillary was noted saying that, “It helps our outreach to moderate taliban elements to show that we like flying planes near buildings … just like they do. ANyone who has a problem with this is just ignorant of how diplomacy works and doesn’t understand our strategy of Smarts Power.”
progressoverpeace on April 27, 2009 at 5:15 PM
1) Do promo-low-fly without notifying the public and risk public injury
2) Do promo-low-fly and notify public, and also break security procedures that keep the president safe by never publicly announcing the exact location of Air Force One beforehand.
3) Scrap actual promo-low-fly and instead create a virtual one with computers (for far less $$$), and don’t risk the president or the public.
He does have “advisors”, doesn’t he?

Why would Obama need a video of Air Force One flying around the Statue of Liberty with jets following closely?

Yeah, that’s it. It can’t be that a large plane, flying very low and near buildings, appears to be chase by F-16s.

The obligatory question has to be asked: “What if the Bush White House had done this?” Nancy and Harry and the NYT would be calling for impeachment, that’s what. But since it is Obama’s White House, a military flunky takes the dive and that’s the last we’ll hear of it. Nothing to see here, folks, move along, now!

Or, he may fully appreciate American fears and are using them. Using them much like an abusive spouse controls through fear to build dependency.
Fear of financial meltdown.
Fear of Automotive failures.
Fear of swine flu.
Fear of torture trials.
Fear of just about everything, or anything …
So, it was time to give New York a little wake up flyover.
It’s all about dependency.
Just random thoughts. Probably don’t mean a thing.
