Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on April 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

“More than ever, America’s atheists are linking up and speaking out — even here in South Carolina, home to Bob Jones University, blue laws and a legislature that last year unanimously approved a Christian license plate embossed with a cross, a stained glass window and the words ‘I Believe’ (a move blocked by a judge and now headed for trial).

They are connecting on the Internet, holding meet-ups in bars, advertising on billboards and buses, volunteering at food pantries and picking up roadside trash, earning atheist groups recognition on adopt-a-highway signs.

They liken their strategy to that of the gay-rights movement, which lifted off when closeted members of a scorned minority decided to go public.”

“Among the many extraordinary positions Eagleton takes in this book, perhaps nothing is more startling than the highly original claim that the United States of America is not religious enough. All right, I am paraphrasing — what he actually says is that our nation’s nauseating, wall-to-wall public piety is strictly pro forma. It’s a kind of ideological window dressing for a social and economic system based on the ruthless exploitation of human beings and natural resources, which is about as far from the teachings of that radical Jewish carpenter from Nazareth as you can possibly get.”

***
“Another reason cited by many people who are now unaffiliated is the belief that many religions are partly true but no single religion is completely true. Fewer people, however, say they became unaffiliated because they think modern science proves that religion is just superstition, indicating that the belief that science disproves religion is a less important reason for becoming unaffiliated than disenchantment with religious people or institutions. At the same time that the ranks of the unaffiliated have grown, the Landscape Survey also revealed that the unaffiliated have one of the lowest retention rates of any of the major religious groups, with most people who were raised unaffiliated now belonging to one religion or another.”

Notice that the effort is apparently to block a “Christian” license plate rather than propose an atheist one.

This isn’t original, startling, or extraordinary: Eagleton is a Marxist literary critic, and this view of religion is Marxism 101. Though Marx thinks that religion is ultimately bunk, he also thinks that it has been exploited and turned into a tool for economic oppression. Again, this is just Marxism 101 applied to contemporary America.

If there is no God, then we are entirely described by (and thus bound by) the various physical laws of the universe, the environment of inputs to us, etc. That is, our thoughts, while a complex system, must still be the result of determinism and chance and not “our choice.”

In other words, if there is no God, then you can’t blame me for believing in one.

Proud Rino on April 27, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Uhm no … I was being a bit facetious. You see – I BELIEVE in a God. I believe our mission in this life is to search for GOD … to get closer to GOD … so that we can become ONE with GOD. It is our destiny … it is what we were meant for.

Now … if there is NO GOD … then all of that is kind of useless isn’t it?

If there is no God … then we are animals. If we are animals – then what would be wrong with being PREDATORY animals? We don’t fault the Tiger for devouring the Water Buffalo – so what would be wrong with me lying and stealing and cheating to get ahead? Or even worse? What would be the use in living a good life? Mankind would be animals – doomed to ultimate extinction.

^^That’s why atheists tend to be angry people.

It’s the difference between having a mission in life – and having none. It’s the difference between being an animal – and being a man.

Really….I don’t care. I see atheists making as much freaking fuss about god as the hard right christian conservatives do. It’s pitiful.

I don’t give a rats ass what you believe in, but you should at least believe this much; life is for living, not continuously whining about what might come after. Live your life in a good way and you won’t need to worry about it either way, will you?

So stop blathering and chest thumping about being atheist or a super duper god fearing whatever. Concentrate on being a decent person. If the only reason you donate to charity, are nice to your neighbor, or help the homeless is to secure your spot in ‘heaven’, then you’re in the same boat as your atheist buddy anyway.

Wise up morons….you too AP.

Spiritk9 on April 27, 2009 at 10:54 PM

My scorecard is getting all messed up. So the new term for an atheist is Unaffiliated? Doesn’t that presume some sort of belief, but the person just won’t associate with others? And the justification for unaffiliation is because none of the affiliated groups is made up entirely of perfect people? Since it is people that interpret each belief system:

the belief that many religions are partly true but no single religion is completely true.

I guess if I held that non-belief- belief, I would include the probably too! No sense in ticking of a Supreme Being that may or may not be there.

ddrintn on April 27, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Yeah, this is my point. Most of my atheist or agnostic friends really don’t care what their “collective image” is and they sure don’t feel like they need to join a club. I do know of some pagans that feel pretty darned insecure… Maybe some of these alleged “A”theists are nothing more than Wiccans…

jeff_from_mpls on April 27, 2009 at 10:44 PM

I didn’t say that, I just asked a question, because that’s obviously untrue. You don’t behave as you do because you’re hoping to get on God’s good side.

Wealthy people commit fewer crimes than poor people, and yet poor people are more religious. More educated people tend to be less religious than lesser educated people, and they also commit fewer crimes per capita.

You might think that’s your reason, but there’s obviously something else going on.

Whether you are a Christian or an a/Atheist, I think you could probably agree with this. For some reason, the Christian West seemed to encourage people to be individuals and to make individual decisions. Of course the Christian West has/had its horrible moments; however, movements such as say the reformation probably eventually lead to more and more individual freedoms…

Man created god just like he created all the other gods now forgotten.

You’re truly a dangerous person if all that keeps you from raping, robbing, and killing is a fairy tale. You really do need religion. That in itself is reason enough not to associate with believers. You’re a bunch of psycho pedophiles. Even the ladies are getting in on the act now.

deewhybee on April 27, 2009 at 11:00 PM

i don’t really goive a crap about atheists.

what bothers me is that SOME are anti-religion and see religion and us believers as a major problem in the world (and thoughout history) as if all religions were the same and all bad only differing by degree.

as if the world would be better without to 10 Commandments, or Bach or Beethoven’s Ninth, or the Salisbury Cathedral – ro any cathedral, or without the Creator in the Declaration of Independence and without our Congress each day consecrating itself to something bigger than human life and even bigger than Gaia.

AND ANOTHER THING:

Natural Law is what makes liberty possible.

Without Natural Law liberty devolves to libertinage.

And there is no Natural Law without God.

For without God there is no eternal externality grounding values onto something beyond the subjective or culturally or temporally relativistic.

And human society devolves into chaos.

Without form.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Allahpundit: SEE THE LIGHT.

d1carter on April 27, 2009 at 11:00 PM

Here in Indiana one of the speciality license plates you can purchase reads “In God We Trust.” This didn’t sit well with the ACLU, but they attacked it in a very different way. Most of the vanity plates cost a little more because there are royalties to pay. The “In God We Trust” plate didn’t have royalties to pay so it cost the same as regular Indiana plate (very ugly looking plate). They ACLU argued because it was a specialty plate it should cost more than the regular plate. Surprisingly the case was thrown out of court. God wins, but I suppose he always does.

Thank you, thank youverymuch.

1. God is something than which nothing greater can be thought.
2. God exists in the understanding.
3. It is greater to exist in reality and in the understanding than just in the understanding.
4. Therefore, God exists in reality.

Hard to deny.

See? The sky gazers and the lizard chasers are duking it out.

I should get some sort of monetary award from AP for my efforts. Or a medal.

Cloning, I think.

But the cynic in me says they aren’t too worried about that. As long as the probe turned around, they just kicked the can down the road for a few hundred years.

Consider it the Obama whale stimulus package. Let the next generation worry about that!

Spirit of 1776 on April 27, 2009 at 11:02 PM

Really….I don’t care. I see atheists making as much freaking fuss about god as the hard right christian conservatives do. It’s pitiful.

Actually, I am a polyatheist myself. There are many gods that I don’t believe in. I don’t discriminate.

Wise up morons….you too AP.

Spiritk9 on April 27, 2009 at 10:54 PM

Oh, nice “Christian” touch there.

MB4 on April 27, 2009 at 11:02 PM

Wealthy people commit fewer crimes than poor people, and yet poor people are more religious. More educated people tend to be less religious than lesser educated people, and they also commit fewer crimes per capita.

You might think that’s your reason, but there’s obviously something else going on.

Proud Rino on April 27, 2009 at 10:55 PM

You mean the rich and educated are not convicted or found out. Your thinking is simplistic and naive at best.

Jamson64 on April 27, 2009 at 11:02 PM

Of course the Christian West has/had its horrible moments; however, movements such as say the reformation probably eventually lead to more and more individual freedoms…

Upstater85 on April 27, 2009 at 11:00 PM

Well, Abolitionism was a Christian movement. The notion of “social justice” is derived from the Hebrew prophets. I would just like an atheist to explain to me how the Marquis de Sade was “wrong”.

So your only motivation to be a decent person is that you will be rewarded for it in Heaven?

Proud Rino on April 27, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Lets use an example. You love your friends and family correct? If you are married, you love your spouse beyond belief and try to be the best husband/wife that you could be. You wouldn’t intentionally hurt your friends, family, or spouse, and you try to live up to their “expectations,” even though at times you can let them down.

This is where I stand with God. I love God and want to please him with my actions. I know what he expects of me because He has given me the Bible. I do good things for him just like I do good things for my friends, family, my husband.

Anyone who has earnestly sought after God, not in an effort to disprove him, but to truly find out if he real.. has found him.

What does the fact that Stalin was an atheist have to do with anything? Atheism is nothing more than not believing in the angry old man in the sky, nothing more.”

ddrintn on April 27, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Yes and no.

OK, I agree with you about the definition of “reasonable” atheism, if you will. But then there are Secularists. This is something a little different than atheism. What about Humanism? Many a progressive would claim to be a humanist christian/jew

God does not exist. He is being itself beyond essence and existence. Therefore to argue that God exists is to deny him.

I love your reaction to Proud Rino’s response!

I don’t know Proud Rino, haven’t seen him/her opine on any other thread, but that name kinda pigeon-holes him/her.

When I read Rino’s response, I thought, “What do you care? You’re floating on the empty middle!”

Proud Rino, I’m not jabbing at you, I just was shocked that a Rino would be proud to declare himself as one.

More than ever, America’s atheists are linking up (hand cuffs) and speaking out… holding meet-ups in behind bars… picking up roadside trash…

hmmm,… what does this sound like?

i don’t really goive a crap about atheists.

I do. They’re people too, who have come to their own judgements. Plus, they’re always good for a heated discussion. ;)

Everytime I see this quote, I chuckle.

Clinton wouldn’t parse that “exists” is different then “being” and yet that is the crux of the argument.

Spirit of 1776 on April 27, 2009 at 11:07 PM

Faith.

Some have faith. Others do not.

Faith in mankind, in a higher power, in a higher purpose, in a god, in God, is not a matter of mathematical precision, nor scientific evidence. Faith is. Or it isn’t.

An honest understanding of the concept of faith is all that is needed. Faith is not religion. Faith is a set in beliefs. It is….well, faith.

I have mine, You have yours.

The likes of Kennedy and OJ Simpson are both educated and rich and both until recently in the case of Simpson were not criminals. Hmmm suppose their education and money had anything to do with it? You argument relies on a flawed premise.

Jamson64 on April 27, 2009 at 11:09 PM

C. S. Lewis was an atheist too. How he came to the conclusion that God does exist is really quite logical.
