Miss California: Pageant organizers tried to force me to apologize

posted at 11:36 am on April 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The saga of the Miss USA pageant continues to get more and more ridiculous.  After organizer Donald Trump inexplicably invited Perez Hilton to judge the beauty contest and the blogger wound up using it as a PR stunt with a politically loaded question, Carrie Prejean has garnered more attention for her runner-up status than the winner got.  (Quick: without Googling, can you name her?)  Now, after Miss California has become a media darling by speaking her own mind, she reveals that the Miss California pageant organizers wanted her to remember her proper place — by renouncing her religious beliefs and apologizing:

Miss California Carrie Prejean, who became the bombshell of the Miss USA pageant by saying gay couples should not be allowed to marry, said Sunday that her state sponsors urged her to apologize afterward but she rejected the advice.

Prejean, 21, said officials from the Miss California USA pageant were worried that her comments would cost their contest financial backing and tried to prepare her for a string of post-pageant media interviews by discouraging her from discussing her religious beliefs.

“`You need to apologize to the gay community. You need to not talk about your faith. This has everything to do with you representing California and saving the brand,’” Prejean recalled being told. “I was representing California. I was representing the majority of people in California.”

You need to not talk about your faith.  For those who think of beauty pageants as anachronisms for young women in an era of liberation, doesn’t this speak volumes about the attitudes of the organizers?  Just shut up and look pretty, even if people are attacking you.

Let’s remember why Prejean has to talk about this at all.  The organizers of the national contest invited an outspoken gay-marriage advocate and allowed him to turn the pageant into a soapbox for his own purposes.  After Prejean gave her honest answer, choosing to have the confidence in her own faith and intellect, Hilton then went on a media tear, calling Prejean a “b***h” and saying he wished he could call her an even more vulgar term demeaning towards women.

And the beauty pageant organizers want her to shut up, smile, and just take it — and apologize for having an opinion.

What a breakthrough for women!

Do you think Perez Hilton’s immature attempt to insert his political agenda into the program and the subsequent “you play with fire you might get burned” result, followed by his tenaged girl whining and ranting is helping the gay cause?

What intelligent person, gay or straight, wants to hook their wagon to that train wreck?

caygeon on April 27, 2009 at 12:27 PM

What in the Hell does any of this have to do with religion anyway? I don’t want to kill kids or turn marriage into a sick joke, and I haven’t set foot inside a church for years.

Liberals claim that everyone else’s beliefs are superstitious nonsense, but all their own idiotic insanity is “reality”. They portray everyone who holds a different political opinion as a bunch of weird cultists. It’s what Socialists call the “big lie.” And we need to quit letting liberals get away with it.

One need only defend oneself to his peers, or his betters. Every time conservatives “defend” ourselves to liberals, we concede their claim of moral perfection. Whether you’re talking about killing babies, Global Warming – it doesn’t matter what the topic is – we have already lost the argument before it begins

If the POPE accuses me of being an evil monster; I’ll feel the need to explain myself (even though I don’t happen to be a member of that particular faith.)

But when people like Perez Hilton and Barney Frank accuse me of being a scumbag? Dude, that’s like being insulted by a cockroach! And we need to treat them with all the respect they deserve. We need to attack, attack, attack and attack again. And never defend ourselves to these wastes of skin – ever.

Stong homes ARE paramount for anyone’s happiness.

Until most recently, children of broken homes were stigmatized as socially undesirable and less than their counterparts in the neighborhood and schools and churches, no thanks to general moral superiority elitism that today is eschewed as extreme. Of course marriage should not be redefined, just as arguments should not sacrifice the innocent by the pageantry of an out-of-context argument (below).

In public, sexuality is expressed NON-VERBALLY as always. Once it becomes verbal in public, it is prostituted. When sexuality becomes the public topic of discourse, no one wins, and a lot of people get hurt.

PAGEANTS have always been about the brand and image. When the contestants applied to compete, there were signature forms and agreements required. Those documents require that the contestant not be married (nor ever have been married), and that if any contestant misrepresent their SINGLE NATURE, or become engaged, that they will be required to relinquish their crown is awarded or expelled if the competition is still underway. Nowhere in those documents did it say that the contestants were required to represent either heterosexual or homosexual rights or both, let alone “marriage”.

The owners of the Miss USA/Universe Pageants deliberately sabotaged Miss CA, hiring the asshat judge, matching him with her for THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION, and then since she had the nerve to stand up for herself, allow that judge to call her a b1tch and a cvnt without repremand, and then attempt to coerce Miss CA to repudiate herself–what a dark turd they’ve made of their entire BRAND.

Miss USA/Universe can now be a transvestite or whatever. Pageants have always been about the brand. For the owners of the Miss Universe franchise to throw up on Miss CA is disgusting.

Let all the liberals tell you how we’re too civilized in the 21st century to let that happen.
Let them explain to us why Britain allowed a woman to marry a dolphin.
Let them explain to us why Muslims are succeeding at having Shari accepted by Democratic/Socialist countries that believe in the ‘freedom’ of mankind to make individual choices.
Let them explain to us why it’s ok for those guys to practice polygamy, but not ‘us’.
Ask Peter Singer(?) why it’s ok for people to ‘love’ animals-why bestiality is acceptable to him & the college he works for.
Slippery slope, no doubt. But they won’t admit it.

Perez Hilton as a beauty pageant judge? What is wrong with that picture? Then Hilton uses the position to create controversy? Why would a homosexual be a judge at a Miss USA pageant? Why aska questionof whether she supports gay marriage or not if you only accept one answer?
How can the promoters of this support attacks on a contestant that spoke her beliefs. There wasn’t a right or wrong answer? It was an opinion and she should be respected for her opinion to uplhold normal marriage values.

I’m completely sure that there are plenty of (otherwise) normal practitioners of every sexual fetish – no matter how incredibly disgusting it might be.

But if a bestiality fetishist approved of someone like Perez Hilton as his personal spokesman, it would be very safe to say there’s absolutely nothing about him or anyone he knows that is in any way “normal.”

No, not valid points. Hey, 8 years ago I thought the same way. But after “coming out” and…going out to the bars, meeting people, etc…we’re as normal as straights are.

Newsflash: Sodomy is not normal.

To say gays spread disease and perform “unspeakable” acts…because we all know straights don’t do that…is ridiculous.

This would be a decent argument if EVERY straight practiced the unnatural act of cramming their genitals inside of an orifice that they were not intended to be inserted into. Since this is the standard practice of a soddomite, you are therefore subjected to this tenfold.

Jag, spend some time around gays. You might find it a wake-up call. We’re just, for the most part, people.

JetBoy on April 27, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Nobody is disputing that. This isn’t a case for the Federal Government, and it isn’t a right guaranteed by the Constitution. It’s part of the game plan.

First you declare that a particular position is “religiously inspired”. Then you invoke the 1st ammendment to claim that the govt can’t hold any religiously inspired position, and hence MUST adhere to the opposite postion.

It doesn’t matter whether or not the position is “religiously inspired”. All you need to do is find someone, somewhere, who claims to be religious who holds to that position.
It doesn’t matter that the first ammendment only declares that the govt can’t create a state church, it does not declare freedom from religion.

Fair enough, though he wasn’t in favor of state’s rights and it is hard to say where he would have been on the issue of affirmative action in the 1970′s. My guess is that he’d have been more likely aligned with the Dems than the GOP.

Since the Dems are more comfortable using the government to affect social change while conservatives tend toward the opposite position, the Dems will tend to attract groups who are looking for politicians who will deliver rights.

It seems more about Trump’s ability to stage a media circus. The purpose (or at least effect) of most pageant questions is to have the contestant say something utterly forgettable about a big issue. Carrie flunked that test, but the controversy she sparked is more valuable than the crown. Ultimately, neither she nor Perez are deep thinkers on the issue but they both play their roles well-enough to give the confrontation a little bit more than the 15 minutes it deserves.

I had no idea and am very glad to know what I share in common with you, onlineanalyst, and coldwarrior beyond politics. (As per recorded Liszt, my affinity is with John Browning–Liszt reincarnated in the Dante Sonata/fantasy–the ENDING given rebirth!)

So let’s play the title game. Which composition best reflects this thread? I’m thinking opera…patience required on my part with the example that popped into mind, as Mozart’s operas are more interesting to study than to sit through AS YET for me–I’m learning to embrace what I formerly tolerated.
Act 1 Finale Quartet – The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart

At least the example demonstrates that what was once ultra-liberal and revolutionary is now considered the quintessence of Classicism (chronologically applicable to our Founding Fathers), and what was once lewd is now trite. What would Wolfy say? (not to get into chauvenism)

The entire pageantry and image of fidelity, love, and the self sacrifice that a real man risks in order to treasure the pure woman’s true love is lost. And for all that he has, Donald Trump has no class. This may as well apply to the wedding encounter thread, too.

Funny how when an actor on Grey’s Anatomy, used the f-t anti gay slur off camera in a private conversation, Perez Hilton and GLAAD demanded that actor be fired. When Perez Hilton used the b and c misogynistic terms against Ms California, there’s not a peep out of GLAAD or any other mainstream gay rights groups denouncing such vile language.

eaglewingz08 on April 27, 2009 at 2:40 PM

Personally I could not care less if someone is gay or likes german shepards. But, when it’s in my face all the time it gets annoying. Every reality show, sitcom, drama etc has to have a gay angle somewhere. The human body has it’s entrances and exits, each should be respected.

faol on April 27, 2009 at 2:10 PM

I personally don’t care what people do in their own home. I don’t walk around in public shouting out “OOOOH LOOK AT ME, I’M SUPER DUPER HETERO!!!11!1!!1!1″

Likewise, I’ve never seen a parade where Santa is feeling up on one of the female elves. But pretty much any parade you go to where the soddomites have forced the city to allow them to have a float, they’re feeling up on each other, in front of little children.

If all heterosexuals were as combative toward homosexuals as homosexuals are towards heterosexuals, we’d never hear the end of the crying.

leetpriest on April 27, 2009 at 2:41 PM

What I most appreciate about her is that she is really nailing the problem with the PC stuff. It does, in fact, ask people to repress their own personal opinions. By sticking to her guns and reminding every interviewer, in a very nice manner, that she was asked specifically about HER personal opinion……..she has, in effect, blown the covers entirely off the so-called “progressive movement.” They are NOT progressive. They are, in fact, regressive. They are NOT proponents of free speech. They are NOT proponents of tolerance of viewpoints.

It just gets me wound up. :)

And I don’t agree with Miss CA on much of anything, I bet.

But I sure do on her right to be authentic.

AnninCA on April 27, 2009 at 1:41 PM

I know what you mean about the oppression of political correctness. Coercion is built into liberalism. If the liberal utopia could come into existence through the choices and desires of free people, it would have already done so. It’s interesting to remember that during the early days after the term “political correctness” was coined, liberals did not realize it was meant as an insult.

The Left has always understood the value of compelling respect for its ideas, symbols, and personalities. If you force people to bow before something often enough, eventually they start thinking it deserves to be bowed to. The reason why every culture developed elaborate rituals of respect and obedience to its nobility is the instinctive understanding that such rituals reinforce authority. The point behind so many of the seemingly absurd gestures made by authoritarian liberals is to make the populace reflexively comfortable with their authority. A society is programmed through habit. Generations of children compelled to participate in the rituals of America’s official state religion, environmentalism, will grow up programmed to respect its high priests and their pronouncements.

There has been much discussion in recent years about whether homosexuality is a product of biology, or a learned response – whether people are born gay, or choose to be that way. I think the same question can be asked of the heterosexual discomfort with gays, and it is the more important question in light of current events. I have the sense that this aversion is hard-wired into heterosexual biology. It is a powerful instinctive response, not a flimsy prejudice learned at a young age. If the straight aversion to gays was a learned behavior, it should have been all but eliminated from the current generation, which has grown up in a culture absolutely bathed in messages of tolerance… but this is clearly not the case. Average folks can be taught to accept homosexuality, but I believe they can never be taught to embrace it – so it will be necessary to teach them to submit to it.

As the next few years play out, the gay movement will follow the same trajectory as the black civil rights movement: it will become less and less about the welfare of individual gay people, and more and more about the power wielded by its leadership and their socialist allies. Socialists are delighted by the battle to devalue traditional marriage, and gay marriage is a very useful club for them to beat traditionalists with. Obedience and submission is every bit as important to the political and cultural elite of 2009 as it was to the monarchs and emperors of previous eras. That is why a beauty pageant contestant will never be allowed to express a traditional or religious viewpoint without being crushed, and normal people will never be allowed to stop thinking about homosexuality, or race, no matter how much they would prefer to do so. There is no political power to be mined from polite indifference.

Doctor Zero on April 27, 2009 at 2:43 PM

I respect her because she won’t allow either side to divert her from her message.

It is only proper that she answered the question asked. They asked her for HER opinion.

Calling out the CA committee may SEEM to be falling on deaf ears, as everyone flits off into the gay or straight BS stuff.

But she’s staying on point.

No pageant committee should ever be advising a winner to lie.

That is the issue.

Miss California: Pageant organizers tried to force me to apologize

Dear sweet and beautiful Carrie:
You have NO reason whatsoever, to apologize for your Christian beliefs…to anyone. Including the Miss U.S.A. Pageant, and especially to them. You did, nor said anything offensive. Fact is, they should be tripping over themselves to apologize to you, for being made an unnecessary spectacle. Clearly, they did a poor PR job covering for cross dressing drag queen Perez Hilton.

I hope the pageant learned a valuable lesson from homo-thug, Perez Hilton’s agenda, on who they should screen for judges.

Lack of respect begets lack of respect. When homosexuals feel each other up and make out with each other, and hump each other like animals at public events like a parade for the sole purpose of forcing their lifestyle onto straight people, it’s a lack of respect for my personal belief and ideology, as well as a lack of respect for the community as a whole.

AnninMX, you and Meg sure do think alike. Let me ask you a question, how is it considered a “win” when neither side represents you?

Likewise, a win for Collins, Specter or any other RINO is never a win for the Repubican party, it’s a win for the Democrat party. Why? Because they know that idiots like you will go out and vote for them because of the (R) next to their name, when their vote is as far left as possible.

Social issues always play a big role in fiscal issues. For example, Guns. Ban guns or ammo, and you’ve put a halt on a certain companies that provide stable, good paying jobs to Americans.

Illegal immigration? Well, take a nice look at the swine flu, how do you think it got here, how do you think it will spread? Open borders. Lack of jobs in the U.S? It’s easy to see that it can be faulted toward the open borders to the south. Now the folks without professional skills get boned. Need I start on how our prisons get filled with all of those illegals that your tax dollars go toward keeping alive?

Most of these social issues are beyond allowing whatever it is to go on. Take abortion as a prime example. The issue is no longer banning abortion. The issue is now using public money to fund these things. Tell me why I should have to pay for your abortion. Go.

And at that, Americans are far better immunized to viruses than Mexicans. Not to mention that I don’t think Mexico City is exactly a hotspot for most travelers going to Mexico. Maybe if it was Acapulco that was the source, we could find that theory a little more reliable.

It’s futile and idiotic to make a comparison about how soddomites act at a parade in front of children that they know will be present, as opposed to how adults will act in a bar that children are not allowed at.
