Iranian weapons convoy sunk?
posted at 10:08 am on April 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ha’aretz reports that an Iranian vessel of arms destined for Gaza mysteriously sunk just as it attempted to dock and transfer its cargo. According to the original report in an Egyptian newspaper, the ship got attacked by either Israeli or American naval forces, continuing an effort to interdict the flow of weapons to Hamas and Hezbollah (via Report on Arrakis):
An Iranian vessel laden with weapons bound for the Gaza Strip was torpedoed off the coast of Sudan last week, allegedly by Israeli or American forces operating in the area, the Egyptian newspaper El-Aosboa reported on Sunday.
Anonymous sources in Khartoum told the newspaper that an unidentified warship bombed the Iranian vessel as it prepared to dock on Sudan before transferring its load for shipment to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
These sources said they suspects U.S. or Israeli involvement in the attack, but neither Washington nor Jerusalem have released a statement yet on the matter.
Considering the original source, this could be just some paranoia by the Egyptian media. If the munitions exploded on their own or due to a mishandling by the crew, their “anonymous sources” could probably trace the conspiracy back to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and provide org charts to show it. If it rains, Israel wants to flood them; if it doesn’t rain, the Jews caused a drought.
Of course, it would be an encouraging sign if this were actually true. Israel and the US have demanded international cooperation on stopping arms shipments to Gaza for years, to no avail. If we’ve moved beyond pleading to actual covert interdiction, then great. It won’t halt them altogether, as Iran will just throw more resources at the problem, in the same manner as Mexican drug cartels getting shipments across the border through the shotgun process. However, it will raise their costs, and eventually the Iranians may run out of mules.
If anyone’s doing this, I’ll bet on the Israelis over the US, especially given the new administrations in both countries.
Update: Yeah, yeah, I know that a convoy refers to multiple ships, but a blogger can hope, can’t he?

Minor nit,
One ship does not a convoy make.
Beyond that, this is good news, however it happened. wink. wink.

Awesome, though technically one ship is not a convoy.

Yeah, it’s funny how money works. We may be saying that the millions for Hamas is for humanitarian uses, but that helps Hamas kill people in 2 ways.
First, it frees up money to buy weapons.
Second, Hamas will surely take credit for the relief provided by those funds, either directly lying and saying the money was theirs, or indirectly by claiming their lobbying efforts procured it. Either way, the $$ won’t help American credibility among the Palestinians one whit.

Nice work–use satellite photos or a sub to track the ships from Iran. Deepsix them when they near the Gaza coastline. Hope and change you can believe in!

Ed,
That ‘Egyptian newspaper’ you poo-poo is a weekly magazine, and it happens to be the same source that originally broke the Sudan convoy story from January.
Carl in Jerusalem on April 27, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Unless I am mistaken, any torpedo that would be carried by any US or Israeli submarine would not “sink” a small freighter such as would likely be able to dock in Gaza. Rather, it would blow it out of the water… and with a cargo of explosives, it would probably be vaporized to boot. There would be nothing left to “sink”.
Thus the probable source of the confusion about “bombed” vs “torpedoed”: the effect was likely similar to what the Palis would have seen from a bomb, but no aircraft was seen.
Israeli sub, bet on it… and converting the rogue vessel into a rapidly expanding sphere of incandescent gas in sight of the dock sends a great de-motivational message.

It’s worth remembering that the ballyhooed sinking of the USS Maine was due not to a bomb but an accident involving her own ordnance, as determined a few years ago by a review board with reports from modern analysts who re-examined the evidence.
Unless we know more, we probably have to label this one “I don’t know.”
