Clinton cluelessness confirmed
posted at 9:26 am on April 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Last week, the Washington Post reported that the new Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu planned to tell the US that they would not work on Palestinian issues until the US dealt with the threat from Iran. Israel later denied it, but I wrote that Netanyahu at least had the cause/symptom relationship correct, and that this administration would likely get it backward. The next day, Hillary Clinton confirmed it:
Aides to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said this week that the Israeli government will not move ahead on the core issues of peace talks with the Palestinians until it sees progress in U.S. efforts to stop Iran’s suspected pursuit of a nuclear weapon and limit Tehran’s rising influence in the region. Netanyahu, who is skeptical of efforts to create a Palestinian state, plans to visit Washington next month; aides said he was preparing to outline his emerging policy to President Obama.
Asked about those comments during an appearance before a panel of the House Appropriations Committee, Clinton said she did not want to “prejudge the Israeli position until we’ve had face-to-face talks.” But she then cautioned that Israel was unlikely to gain support for thwarting Iran unless there were visible efforts to achieve Palestinian statehood.
“For Israel to get the kind of strong support it’s looking for vis-a-vis Iran it can’t stay on the sideline with respect to the Palestinian and the peace efforts, that they go hand-in-hand,” Clinton said.
Clinton noted that every Arab official she has met with “wants very much to support the strongest possible policy toward Iran.” But, she said, “they believe that Israel’s willingness to reenter into discussions with the Palestinian Authority strengthens them in being able to deal with Iran.”
As I predicted, Clinton and Barack Obama got this backwards. The Palestinian problem is being stoked by Iran, not the other way around. Iran is behind the rise of Hamas and their coup d’etat in Gaza, which has effectively split the Palestinian proto-state into two entities. They want to ensure that an annihilationist force remains in power in order to give Iran a channel with which they can conduct proxy attacks on Israel. Iran openly funds Hamas for this very reason, just as they fund Hezbollah in Lebanon to create conflict on Israel’s north.
Arabs oppose Iranian hegemony for entirely selfish reasons; none of them want to live under a Persian thumb. That has nothing to do with Israel. If an American State Department can’t arrange Arab opposition to Iran, then they should quit in shame over their complete and abject incompetence. I’m not sure I’ve heard such a dumb excuse coming from State, and certainly not from a Secretary of State.
Israel’s engagement on Iran for the last 16 years since Oslo hasn’t garnered them the least bit of Arab opposition to Iranian hegemony. Israel has signed the Oslo accords, and suffered through two intifadas for their trouble. They pulled out of Gaza and dismantled all of the settlements there, and in return they get showered by thousands of rockets and missiles every year from Hamastan. Have Arab nations lifted a finger so far to keep Iran from funding Hamas in Gaza? Not at all. They’re far more concerned about Iran’s proxy attacks on their own governments, a concern that Hillary Clinton is apparently entirely incapable of recognizing and leveraging for real change in the Middle East.

When Obama surrounds himself with incompetent people who have the morals of an alley cat, then what do you expect? When you see Naploitano, Biden, Emmanuel, Holder, Sebelius and Clinton you know when the incompetence is that apparent, then the messiah is just a puppet for handlers that own his teleprompter.

Netanyahu can present his ideas to Obowa all he wants, they will be ignored or tossed in the trash. This is about Obowa and only Obowa; if he needs to step on a few toes or abandon an ally to make sure that his ego is stroked by international adulation, he will.

Note to Ed – the first intifada predated Oslo.
I would really like to see Netanyahu stick to his guns on this issue. It is clear to me that Obama has no intent to do anything serious about Iran’s nuclear program. Why would Israel willingly put itself into a more vulnerable position now? Netanyahu is smart enough to know that the US, sadly, will not lift a finger to help Israel should Iran or, more likely its proxies, go on the offensive against her.

AnninCA Isreal is in a tough spot. it can’t allow Iran to get the bomb because Iran will use it in Israel. Israel will respond massively. Not a good thing. But it doesn’t want to fight another war. obama is not helping because he is esentualy just delaying any action till they have the bomb. So obamas actions are essentualy ensuring the destruction of most of the middle east. Its a tough nut to crack and obama is showing very little that would make anyone think he is up to the task.
sonofdy on April 27, 2009 at 10:08 AM
Netanyahu is the right man for the job right now. Israel is blessed that he won.
You are correct – it is necessary for Iran to have chaos to try to reassert themselves as the supreme rulers of the region. Fighting within the Arab nations, fighting within the Palestinian leaders, or ideally all are fighting with Israel – all these situations benefit Iran. Any destabilization in the region creates chaos.
Our administration is myopic to think this is simply about Israel. But Israel must treat it as such.

I buy that up to a point. American Jews have never understood that security comes with a price. They haven’t abandoned Israel as much as they’ve bargained for their own security here in America by offering silence to the demagogues on the professional Left who essentially harbor animus and jealousy for Jews everywhere. Jews have voted Democrat because of an overly charitable strain which makes them lean left, not that you’ll have an easy time finding a Jew on welfare. Education is ingrained in Jews, but so is the false notion that all cultures share the same goals for their children; that’s just moronic diversityspeak, but Jews have bought into it, even propogated it.
Hilliary Clinton (not named as claimed for Sir Edmund Hilary), is famous for such gems as “You f**king Jew bastard!” and working to defend homicidal Blanck Panthers. She’s showing her true colors, all of them black, and baring her fangs in line with the Muslim Brotherhood. She and Obama have pulled off the most horrendous trick on the Jews since Nazi guards invited them to take a shower.
Western_Civ on April 27, 2009 at 10:10 AM
Short attention spans in the US forget Mr. Obama criticizing Mrs. Clinton’s foreign policy abilities. Then he made her secretary of state… this is what you get when you hire people because of their genitalia and the sheep they bring into the flock rather than for their understanding or ability.
You can’t have a state without leaders… the Palestinians are so fractious, there is no leadership to assign to a state. Although it’d be nice to make it state so when the attacks don’t stop, Israel has more of a right to occupy what would be ‘Palestine’ and depose their ‘leaders.’
Israel has done plenty of compromising with no results to show from the other side.
The US is now in the midst of getting punk’d by Iran, which Israel cannot live with.

We see Iran through the lens of US interests. This is a different lens than Bibi is looking through right now. It is silly, on either side’s part, to insist on one party using the other’s interests as the primary circumstances for this issue.
If Bibi insists on stronger action vis a vis Iran as precondition for peace talks, then no peace talks. If i were SecDef or SecState, we’d be making our own conclusion on the best course of action in dealing with Iran, not simply co opting Israel’s views.
ernesto on April 27, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Does anyone really have any faith that a far left President
has any intentions of standing strong with Isreal.
This is the President that sent Hamas 900 million dollars right after Israel went in to stop the thousands of rockets being rained down on it.
N.Korea,Iran, the Taliban, and Russia see nothing but capitulation and narcissism when they view Obama.
Here is a man that considered (with the help of the press)a recent overseas trip that was full of photo ops and pats on the back, but a failure in getting anything meaningfully done considering his spending plans and getting combat troops for a NATO operation in Afghanistan a great success.
Israel knows that if the worst case scenario happens (the jihadist(Iran,Taliban) obtaining a nuclear weapon)it will be up to them to stop it(Iran),without much support from the failure of the UN and now an appeaser in the White House.
They know good and well that Obama will not get involved in any international conflict if it means sacrificing his global warming agenda and socialized health care.
“peace agreements” always involve Israel giving up land and security, then the jihadist launching attacks after bogus accusations, then Israel having to strike back. This never changes because the only solution for Iran,Palestine, Syria, and the rest of the Arab league is the total destruction of Isreal.
With these people being in charge of international affairs,I fail to see how Israel can feel any confidence that the White House considers their interest and security a top priority:

National Security Advisor during the administration of President Jimmy Carter
BRZEZINSKI BOASTS OF STARTING THE AFGHAN WAR
Interview with Brzezinski:
Q:
Despite this risk, you were an advocate of this covert action. But perhaps you yourself
desired this Soviet entry into war and looked to provoke it?
Brzezinski:
It isn’t quite that. We didn’t push the Russians to intervene, but we
knowingly increased the probability that they would.
Q:
When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting that they intended to fight
against a secret involvement of the United States in Afghanistan, people didn’t believe
them. However, there was a basis of truth. You don’t regret anything today?
Brzezinski:
Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of
drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? The day that the
Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter: We now have the
opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war. Indeed, for almost 10 years, Moscow
had to carry on a war unsupportable by the government, a conflict that brought about the
demoralization and finally the breakup of the Soviet empire.
Q:
And neither do you regret having supported the Islamic fundamentalists, having given
arms and advice to future terrorists?
Brzezinski:
What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the
collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Moslems or the liberation of Central
Europe and the end of the cold war?
Q:
Some stirred-up Moslems? But it has been said and repeated: Islamic fundamentalism
represents a world menace today.
Brzezinski:
Nonsense! . . .
And to top it all off.
Mr. 57 states is already on record stating that even if he knew then what he knew now about the success of the surge(that won the Iraq War)he would still vote against it.
The only time you see this crowd get angry and talk about being tough,it is when they are attacking Republicans.

because Israel does not have the luxury being all talk and no action.

The same Muslim family living in the refugee camp at Bethlehem has been in charge of the grounds and keys to the Church of Nativity for the past few hundred years. Why? Because there was so much infighting between which Christian family would control the access that it made sense to give it to a neutral party. Not only that, but what you don’t hear much of is that Muslims are converting to followers of Jesus in greater numbers in that specific area than ever before in the history of the world.
Your statement is one of grave ignorance.
At this perilous point in history and specifically the region, the Muslim to Christian converts are the prize…the real behind the scenes diplomacy that is working, which you also won’t hear from our State Department. Even the Israelis in the area will tell you first-hand that the Christian (both Catholic and Evangelical) missionary work in the region is key to and quite beneficial to the Israelis.

There are a number of measures that could help. The US could stop hamstringing Israel as it did when it insisted that the Philadelphi Corridor become Egypt’s concern rather than Israel’s as just one example. And the US has not held Egypt’s feet to the fire in living up their agreement on stopping smuggling through the Corridor.
But there is a bigger issue here. If ultimatums to the US are ‘not the right approach’, why have successive ultimatums from the US to Israel, in complete disregard to her legitimate security concerns, been the ‘right approach’? That is what successive American governments have done since Camp David. Because the US and Europe will not allow Israel to defeat Hamas, Israel is hamstrung.

Iran knows it has nothing to fear from Obama – he is keeping that campaign promise. Other Arab nations have held the reigns on Iran & other regimes before. Sometimes it’s by money, sometimes by influence, sometimes by favors, sometimes just fear.
Read the stuff Baxter has posted and do some reading about Power & Susan Rice – they are directing Hilary. This is the ground work for their policy. Precisely at the end of our 24 hour remembrance day, after our mourning we honor our fallen in the ultimate way, NATIONAL celebration for their SACRIFICE in Independence day celebrations across the country in a 24 hour party – Hundreds of thousands of Israelis will be in the streets reveling peacefully and singing drinking & dancing!!
Your president tours the world apologizing for America, America has nothing to apologize for, save for sad individuals such as yourself..

getalife was chastised by her handlers and told to get back into the HA fray, or she would lose her stipend.
Also got updated Axelrod talking points “turn the argument around, now that its clear Bambi has embarrassed America to the world through blaming America – just say “you cons are blaming America first”.
Good little minion…

Dear Israel,
You are expected to play ball and sign up for a set of conditions that will destroy you OR we will let you be destroyed.
Thank you.

Ed, you are so right. Read Roger Cohen’s piece in The New York Times. Here’s my response to Cohen, Clinton and Obama:
Oh, please. You (Mr. Cohen) now sound as marginalized in your pro-Palestinian anti-Israeli diatribes as Bush sounded in the reverse. Both sides have their issues, and both should be treated equally.
But let’s be real. This renewed push to solve the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict isn’t really about Israel or the Palestinians. This push for peace is about the new commonality that the Arabs now have with Israel and the US: the marginalization of Iran. The solution you and others of your ilk are proposing these days I call The Wimp Solution. The Israel-Palestinian Conflict is important to the US in terms of The Oil Cartel, al Queda, and Iran. So according to you and others and your new meme, you propose to sell out Israel so that America will have peace, oil at a decent price, and a nuclear free Iran. And, by the way, spare us your it’s about the poor Palestinians, humanitarian reasons, for the new anti-Israel tone. There are an awful lot of Israeli children who would take issue with your sympathetic portrayal of the poor Palestinians in Gaza without so much as a mention of the fear under which Israeli children live. America has the proper solution to her problems in the Middle East, but hasn’t the courage to deploy them. Stop being dependent on Arab oil. Stop Iran by doing what Obama is trying to force Israel to do — that he hasn’t the courage to do — and go in and bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities. And once and for all tell the Arabs that if they don’t like the conditions the Palestinians have contrived for themselves, then give them a homeland on Arab soil — not two-MORE-states (one in Gaza and one in the West Bank) that will leave Israel with long-term security issues. The employment of all of the above might stop radical Islamists, but your idiotic ideas don’t offer anymore certainty that the radicals will make peace than do mine.
An addendum: OPEC today says it wants to raise the price of a barrel of oil to $70.00, a threat?
