Aw: Stingy president stiffs daughters’ school with weak charity gift
posted at 7:28 pm on April 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Fluffy fun on a slow news night. Look, as much as we’d all like to believe he’s the Superpresident, and as glad as we are that he and Michelle are “the planet’s hottest rock stars,” we need to cowboy up and face a hard truth:
The guy’s just not very good at giving gifts.
In 1996, a round of golf with Bill Clinton went for nearly six figures; another year Chelsea Clinton offered up her babysitting services to the highest bidder.
This past weekend was the Obamas’ first chance to participate in the Sidwell Friends School Dollars for Scholars benefit, and some families who remember the Clintons’ support are disappointed in the Obamas’ first showing.
According to a source with ties to the school, the only items up for bid from the Obamas included a signed copy of the Rolling Stone issue featuring the president and a signed copy of the January Vogue that featured the first lady.
“There were expectations that they might donate something more personal, like the Clintons did,” said another source who knew about the auction. “Lots of people were disappointed.”
Michelle’s anniversary gift this year: A Garfield card with the inscription, “Thanks for all you do — Best, B.” Some of our readers were goofing on him in the Headlines thread about this for being narcissistic in signing his own magazine cover, but that barely even rates on O’s self-admiration scale. We are, after all, talking here about a guy who goes around telling colleagues how gifted he is. Today’s official most self-regarding presidential gambit, in case you’re keeping score at how: Terrorizing lower Manhattan for a photo op of Air Force One.

Blowback

Sooo much more easy giving away other peoples’ money…an’ stuff..

When Obama created himself, he forgot to give him the gift of giving.

Obama gave Sidwell Friends School a copy of Rolling Stone, and Vogue…and took away their vouchers.

As I said on the previous thread, I don’t think it’s fair to judge President Obama for not helping out with the school’s auction. He may have been worried that some of the money could go to provide scholarships to poor minority DC kids.
We know that this is something to which the president is morally opposed, so what else is he supposed to do?

If anybody’s interested, there is a devastating article on powerlineblog.com right now about the Special Inspector General’s report on the (originally $700 billion, now $3 trillion and growing) TARP. This thing is so completely out of control, and so ripe for massive fraud and theft, that it’s almost unbelievable. This has the potential to be the biggest fraud ever perpetrated against American taxpayers. Don’t read it unless you have a strong stomach.

Talk about ingratitude, don’t you know how much thought went into giving a signed Rolling Stones mag and Garfield card? I bet they agonized over this choice of presents like they agonized over the 25 DVD set and the russian reset button.
Maybe, they should have auctioned off a two day experience with BO? Or a photo of Michelle Obama in one of her sleeveless numbers? Or maybe that Open Veins book in Spanish with footnotes by Obama and Dohrn and Ayers? They might have gotten some big bucks for those.

Heh. good one.
deidre on April 27, 2009 at 7:53 PM
That’s not a fair comparison. It only got six figures because the bidders knew it came with –
- 24 hours of the best bourbon money can buy,
- a limousine full of hot, drunk, mostly naked Hollywood starlets,
- and all the secrecy and protection the Secret Service can provide.
It sounds like one of those “what if you could…?” jokes.
I can’t believe it didn’t bring seven figures.

Years ago an aquaintance went to a private nightclub in NYC. There was an amazingly beautiful young lady at one table.
The friend approached and told her “Forgive me for interrupting but you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen”
The girl looked at him straight faced and replied “Yes, I know. Would you like my photograph” and pulled out a big stack.
Physical beauty is undeniable
What if Obama gave a gift and nobody came?
Obama toys with people when he gives crappy gifts, like DVD collections, and he toys with people when he puts out fish bait like autographed covers of himself to validate the fish are still biting
The detachment of the beauty queen, without the certainty of the mirror
IMHO an unpleasant fellow, in the manner of the worst characters in Dickens
entagor on April 27, 2009 at 7:55 PM
I hope we find out how much they go for in the auction. Perhaps Obama and Michelle will use a front guy to bid up, and they’ll reimburse him.

OMG, Obama is a muslim and a cheapskate. He doesn’t love America or he would be more generous. All his money went to Islamic charity. He’s saving his money to implement Sharia Law. He’s the devil. He’s the anti-christ. Commies don’t give money to charity. Conservatives are great, libruls are evil pigs. Democrats are ugly and stinky, conservatives walk on water and smell like roses. Obama has a 69% approval rating. 21% of Americans identify themselves as Republicans. Republicans could lose seats in the 2010 midterms. Republicans have lost the youth vote, minority vote and the anyone with a sound mind vote. Give up

The first men of your people who came to our country were named Lewis and Clark. The were sent by the Great Chief Thomas Jefferson. They brought many things that our people had never seen. They talked straight. These men were very kind.
What happened to you people of your tribe since then? How have you fallen so far? Where you taken over by invaders from another continent that you could not repel? Did you displease the Great Spirit in some manner? Your hearts must be sick and sad.

DING, DING, DINGETY… to the tune of $975 billion in just two years as a U.S. Senator. But now we see that was just the warm up act. But who’s really suprised considering his half brother still living in a 9 foot shack and his aunt living in a ghetto in Boston (I believe, but for sure in a ghetto).
But the real gift come next semester when school vouchers are no longer available, when those poorer families don’t have to arrange transportation for their children to that school, because they will get to attend a local public school that will even send a bus to pick them up. Saving those folks some serious dough. I’ll bet they are grateful.

I’m going to have to play the devil’s advocate and please don’t take this in any way as an endorsement of Obama behavior but …
My “Tacky Gossip” meter went off when reading this. While it’s true President Obama is a complete hypocrit by insisting that people “Volunteer” more time and resources (to receive government benefits) and the Obamas donate very little of their own time and money unless there is a camera on hand for publicity – what cause does Michelle champion with her consequence? It escapes me. – The girls have only been at the school for a few months. Someone probably failed to impress upon them the high standard set by the Clintons and at least the Obamas didn’t offer DVD’s no one could play so — they are improving.
But honestly, this is cheap gossip and none of our business. People should donate from a sincere belief in the chosen cause and a desire to donate, not for publicity, to look good or out of guilt. True, they should set a high bar and a good example, but my expectations of the First Family has been pretty much in the basement so anything at all is a step up from there.
I’m torn. Exposing these profound hypocritical flaws in the First Family should be beneath us as a Nation, but their “do as we say and not as we do” policies shoved down our throats just beg for tsking. And besides, they get less of a deduction for charitable donations so *shrug* who can blame them?
Wow. I just all over the place on this one.
BrideOfRove on April 27, 2009 at 9:56 PM
