Poll: Obamateurism of the Week?
posted at 8:05 am on April 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s been a week full of Obamateurisms, but what was the best? Vote in today’s poll! We’ll announce the results tomorrow with Kevin McCullough on the Ed Morrissey Show.
Previous winners:
- Obama covers up IHS while quoting Jesus
- Austrian is a language?
- Obama bows to the Saudi king
- 1908 Model T got better gas mileage than today’s SUVs

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obama, in a supreme act of hubris thought he could control the memo release to make opponents look bad and appease his supporters. The reverse happened, the left got hungrier and demanded more, and the Bush admin was vindicated because it turned out the tactics worked. This blew up in his face and also damaged the countries interests.
rob verdi on April 26, 2009 at 8:12 AM
I’m still unclear as to what an “Obamateurism” is. Does it mean an amateur act from Obama, or him being his incredibly arrogant self, or just anything stupid that he does?
That being said, I said “Bay of Pigs.” He still doesn’t get it’s not all about him.
amkun on April 26, 2009 at 8:16 AM
Is means Obama is bad. the fact that this is a recurring piece presumedly run until Obama leaves office tells you all you need to know. The facts have yet to come be we already know how they’ll be spun.
Tom_Shipley on April 26, 2009 at 8:24 AM
I voted on the torture flip-flop, but I have to qualify it by saying that it is so egregious an act against our military, intelligence professionals, and our security that it goes way beyond Obamateurism into treason.
I used to roll my eyes at the whole Manchurian candidate paranoia, but it does seem that he is deliberately trying to destroy the country by giving our enemies important information while going after those who keep us safe.
Laura in Maryland on April 26, 2009 at 8:25 AM
Is means President Obama is human. Is means media too invested to report embarassing goofs.
Is means sumthin’
Peri Winkle on April 26, 2009 at 8:33 AM
The “torture” memos debacle displays so many elements and levels of Obabma’s ineptness that it has my vote, hands down.
Thank God for Dick Cheney to call him — and his clownish confederates in the Dem leadership — out directly. The Dem hypocrisy on this particular issue goes beyond the pale. Their willingness to do anything, damn the consequences to the country, just to strike at the Bush Administration is exposed for the partisan hackery it is.
cruadin on April 26, 2009 at 8:34 AM
Yes, indeed. The facts have yet to come be. (We will not feel the effects of the current policies until later this year and next year.)

Ed is simply reporting on what the drive-bys won’t. He makes W look like a perfect speaker. Facts? We already have the facts. Empty suit, delegating everything to others without having to take blame himself.
The fact that you can find one daily should be the first clue.
Besides, he is just so hip!
rightside on April 26, 2009 at 8:36 AM
he certainly is trying to destroy this country. no body, & i mean nobody could make all these “mistakes” & “miscalculations” by accident.
some are horrible gaffes that should have been prevented by staff (doesn’t the bambi administration have a protocol office?), but others are major policy shifts: releasing secret interrogation methods; opening “public” dialog with Iran, Venez & Cuba; destroying our economy & federalism all with the same ax; targeting, thru DHS, those at the very bedrock of patriotism.
these are not accidents. c’mon people, man up. we need to keep the pressure on the 535 people in congress that are holding us hostage.

ericdijon on April 26, 2009 at 8:45 AM
He can haz be human?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 26, 2009 at 8:50 AM
Well, in classifying Obama, I considered Commander Data’s rhetorical question “If you prick me, do I not leak?”. And I had to fall back to the ‘human’ comment because I couldn’t quit tittering about prick and leak appearing in the same sentence.
Peri Winkle on April 26, 2009 at 8:51 AM
I was afraid it was way more existential than I was prepared to deal with from this site this morning.
“IS” means “President double-naught is human”
ericdijon on April 26, 2009 at 8:54 AM
Sorry, I figured my sarcasm was so thick, a tag was not necessary.
Is means well.
Peri Winkle on April 26, 2009 at 8:54 AM
Well, when I began to classify Obama, I considered Commander Data’s rhetorical question “If you pr1ck me, do I not leak?” I had to fall back on ‘human’ because I couldn’t quit tittering about seeing pr1ck and leak in a single sentence.
And the first time I submitted this comment 10 minutes ago with the correct spelling, it was apparently blocked. Who’d a thunk?
Peri Winkle on April 26, 2009 at 8:59 AM
Good. No one love sarcasm any more than I do but remember the golden rule…
If the robbery note is typed and reads “I have a gub” instead of “I have a gun” then the teller will simply laugh and you won’t get the money. Your intent is destroyed.
Blog commenters are human and prone to typing errors – no way a politician can be human – even if he is on our team.
ericdijon on April 26, 2009 at 9:01 AM
+1 on errors.
I disagree about politicians though. They are human through and through. Their positions of responsibility just magnify the flaws we all struggle to master.
I just wish they would play their games with their own quarters and not mine.
Peri Winkle on April 26, 2009 at 9:07 AM
I voted on the Torture Memos flip-flop-flip.
It doesn’t just make his administration (using the term loosely) look stupid. It put soldiers on the battlefield immediately in greater danger and puts Americans at home generally in greater danger.

The private life is human; the public life is a machine.
A lawnmower cuts the lawn, a rake gathers clippings, a mulcher refines the clippings into soil nutrients; these are machines operated by humans. A politician advances an agenda. The politician is a machine.

We are seeing the unmasking of the Progressive movement like never before. We were calling him a socialist, marxist, facist, collectivist. It was all of those rolled into one, a progressive. thomasaur on April 26, 2009 at 9:31 AM
Ed, I wish you had included your 4/24 post about Obama releasing the abuse photos as an Obamateurism. While it isn’t a “gaffe,” it is evidence of political pettiness. It reeks of placing partisan politics over national security, and is one of the biggest Anti-American outrages he has committed so far. Wright’s “God damn America” comes to mind. I fear the photos will endanger American troops in the field and Americans abroad, generally.
That said, I voted for the torture probe flip-flop-flip, as this also immaturely places partisan politics over national security, and may well damage intelligence operations for years.

I was earning $18,000/year for tuition from the Fed then – nice. (I was a poor kid.) After that is was expensive, but I don’t recall Carter polarizing the nation. I don’t recall having dread for the nation’s safety. I was hoping though he would have walked in and put the cork in the leak at Three Mile Island.

My brigade in about half in place now. The torch party guys are already out flying missions. I’m leaving out of Pope tomorrow night and should be flying missions within a week or so. The very idea that this administration choose the eve of the Afghanistan “Surge” to rehash the torture discussion and is going to make embarrassing graphics available for the entire world to see is just beyond me. How does that serve the man or woman who have to face these people? Few things scare me, but I cringe at the idea of falling into the hands of someone wringing their hands over information and pictures that my own commander in chief is publishing for them to see.
I’ll be drinking a few tonight myself.

I began my first engineering job out of college the month that Carter was inaugurated. (I did not vote for him.) I recall a lot of foolishness with brother Billy and generally fawning news coverage (Miz Lillian, accck!).
The hostage crisis hit my cringe button, but what really got my panties in a wad was the interest rates. Ye Gods! Does anyone, anyone honestly think they would buy a house with 16% mortgage rates!!!
And I was working in Detroit in 1979, when Iacocca went hat-in-hand to Washington and men were standing in the medain of Woodward Ave. selling the Dallas Morning News.

I was single and really had no aspirations to buy a home at the time, but there were even worse things than the economy. That was very early in my military career and the Carter years were devastating on us. We were wearing the equivalent of Dickie polyester green fatigues and had no training dollars whatsoever. We were a joke and all the old NCOs would tell us that Carter was doing everything he could to keep us unprepared to do any serious armed conflict. My family was very liberal and never saw anything that Carter did as bad and blamed all the bad economics on Nixon and Ford. I was starting to turn then though. I’m not sure if Carter would have been elected a second time, how my life would have turned out. Thank God I didn’t have to find out.
When Ron Reagan hit the scene, he brought the US Military back from the near brink of total collapse. I kid you not. He inspired us to be America’s vanguard again and he funded us. He immediately gave us direction and started opposing the Marxist in our own hemisphere. He built the finest military this world has even seen and he knew how to wield it.
I loved Reagan. Like I said, I came from a family of liberal donks, but I managed to see the light under Reagan’s leadership. He made me Conservative and inspired me to stay in the military.
These times make me wish for Time Machines and other such nonsense.

It’ll be tougher this time to get on the internet for stuff like this. The push isn’t being funded to the point where infrastucture has caught up with the boots on the ground. We for instance will most likely be in tents for the entire year. Even us senior folks. The two W5s who are already there from my shop are in tents. They’re worried about even unpacking the creature comfort stuff like little personal TVs and such let alone trying to get internet hooked up to the tents. I bet I took part in destroying scores of those goofy looking things. I feel personally responsible for helping to rid the Army of them and helping pave the way for the Hummer. (I kid about everything except how many I destroyed)
I remember when the Hummers started coming into Ft. Bragg. In an area called COSCOM there was a literal sea of the new vehicles in a motor pool and all across the old drive-in theater and Sean Field were the overflow spilled into. It was the most amazing thing to see. You could have bought an old quarter ton or one of those studid Suburbans for a song back then.

The uniform changes were good, too – right about the time I joined is when they went away from the olive drab and into the new cammies.
They were auctioning off the old jeeps at my unit at the time, cheap. Should have bought one, but I was a starving E-2.
Seriously, though, be careful over there, bro.

We are seeing more and more eye to eye. I am so glad you approve of double-tapping over “so-called” torture.
