CDC: It’s too late to contain Mexico’s swine flu; Update: Two in Kansas, eight probable in NYC
posted at 3:11 pm on April 25, 2009 by Allahpundit
This is one of those very rare times when I’m glad I’m a shut-in. A new strain of flu in one of the world’s largest cities located in the heart of a failing state: What could go wrong?
This virus is a mix of human, pig and bird strains that prompted WHO to meet Saturday to consider declaring an international public health emergency — a step that could lead to travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures. Spokesman Gregory Hartl said a decision would not be made Saturday.
Scientists have warned for years about the potential for a pandemic from viruses that mix genetic material from humans and animals. Another reason to worry is that authorities said the dead so far don’t include vulnerable infants and elderly. The Spanish flu pandemic, which killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19, also first struck otherwise healthy young adults…
The CDC says two flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, seem effective against the new strain. Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, said the company is prepared to immediately deploy a stockpile of the drug if requested. Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.
Mexico’s Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said the country has enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people — only one in 20 people in greater Mexico City alone — and that the medicine will be strictly controlled and handed out only by doctors.
If it’s susceptible to OTC drugs, presumably we’re okay; developing countries, not so much. In fact, with 60 already dead in Mexico and another 1,000 suspected cases, I wonder if the next drug racket the cartels down there get into won’t be Tamiflu. All we need now is for the virus to migrate to Pakistan, where the country’s already teetering, and we’ll have a true apocalyptic clusterfark to end all clusterfarks.
As for the immigration angle, the boss is already all over it. A perfectly secure border wouldn’t stop this from spreading — see, e.g., SARS hopping across the Pacific from China to Canada in 2003 — but it sure might slow it down. Ah well, it’s “racist” to even think such things. Apologies.
Update: Here we go.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirms two cases of swine flu in Kansas…
New York officials announced Saturday that 8 students there probably have swine flu, but they’re unsure of strain type.
How’s it spreading to so many far-flung places? There should be a chain of infection via visitors to or from Mexico, no?

Given that:
– influenza is known to pass naturally between species and regularly mutate;
– wild birds, swine and poultry livestock, and people fly around the world;
– some Mexican farms have pigs, poultry and people living in close proximity and in filthy conditions;
– Mexico is not a high value terrorist target;
– Mexico is not yet a developed country, with a warm climate which is the perfect breeding site for new pandemic strains of influenza, as in the Spanish Flu, the Asian Flu, and the Hong Kong Flu;
– there is not a single fact to support the notion of this being a bio-terrorist attack or a laboratory release; and
– misinformed rumors and gossip can always accompany pandemics, spreading panic which can detract from prevention and treatment;
it would be prudent to consider this a natural phenomenon until proven otherwise.

With a death toll in the 80s before we hear anything else about it, it’s obviously not a “hoax” per se. I do find it interesting that the guy who greeted The Won to Mexico is one of them, though (Yes, the Mexican equivalent to the CDC is saying he died of pneumonia. Which is one of the ways that flus usually “get” the elderly, actually, which this guy was).
Given the claim by the CDC that they were “unaware” of the flu until the Mexican government took its measures last week, I’d be more likely to agree with a claim that someone was snoozing across a switch than one that it’s malice aforethought. The fact that The Won’s health team is unconcerned though, has me concerned – I mean, come on, you came into direct contact at a grip’n'grin with one of the earliest casualties! How can you possibly be “unconcerned” ?!?!?

Swine Flu Google Map recently updated.
Still no deaths outside of Mexico.
Only confirmed cases in Mexico, US, Canada & New Zealand. All others suspected, but now include suspected cases in 6 other countries, including new suspected cases in Australia.
All cases have Mexico links.
Other than Colombia, no suspected cases reported yet in undeveloped or underdeveloped countries, where a pandemic will explode, if it is going to do so.
No deaths yet outside of Mexico.

Some countries are banning pork products now? This is what happens when people choose to ignore science for political advantage.
In case anyone has doubts: Viruses cannot survive in dead hosts. Any dead pig will be virus-free in a matter of hours at most, much quicker if it were processed or cooked.
pifactorial on April 27, 2009 at 12:16 AM
I heard from a doctor on Fox that you COULD get the virus from raw pork….I doubt it too, because of refrigeration, but who knows.
HornetSting on April 27, 2009 at 12:18 AM
Influenza is the 7th leading cause of death in the US accounting for over 65,000 deaths in 2000. So an outbreak of 60 must really be something.

Whereas eating raw pork was just fine and dandy before this flu outbreak.

The reason that common influenza kills so many Americans, is that it takes those who are “near death” anyway from other diseases or advanced age.
Deaths from the Mexican Flu included many young adults who were otherwise healthy, thus being more disruptive to families, employers and economies.
That’s something.
Common flu affects from 5-20% of the population annually, but only kills a small fraction of a percent of those it infects. So far in Mexico, the death rate is about 6%. If this goes pandemic and even only affects 5% of the world, a 6% death rate would result in 20 million deaths, including many young, productive adults.
That’s something.
The Mexican Flu may not go pandemic. It might peter out on its own or might be contained. However, if it does it could cause extreme disruptions in our country and even worse around the world. So, keeping it contained would be a good idea.
Many countries around the world are intensifying screening of deplaning passengers from Mexico, and taking other precautions to reduce the likelihood of this dangerous flu from becoming pandemic. What are we doing?
Janet Napolitano is studying the situation. And the other cabinet level officials who would be responsible have not even been appointed yet.
That’s nothing.

Good god what a horrible scenario this could turn out to be. Yes here in the States we have access to a health care system and medicines which will drastically reduce the mortality rates…but in Mexico…it could be really really bad being the Third World country that they are. My question is, if this decimates the Mexican population, especially being as it seems to like the young adult, who then will do all these jobs that Americans refuse to do? Oh the humanity!

Good thing we have a “Free and Independent Press”, just like Mexico……………..
………. otherwise, I would stop buying food, energy, and ammunition.
If George Soros can collapse the economies of multiple nations………
Why not build on the “crisis”?
……… After years of Conservatives screaming that the border needed to be secured, isn’t it curious that now, all of a sudden, after all the salmonella outbreaks of produce coming from Mexico was just an “isolated incident”, that a country in the middle of a Civil War can now confirm without a doubt 80 deaths to the tee?
Wait for what is coming next……………

Take a good look at that article, folks. Remember it. Any time you complain about the government doing a lousy job containing the flu bug, I’ll be here to remind you that the Republicans didn’t want to pay for that frivoulous government program.

I guess these numbers can increase…or they stem the spread.
I find it interesting that a 8 of people got the flu, but none died in New York…a 8 out of 8 million (.0001%).
So a couple died (in Kansas) of swine flu me get the calculator out, .000288%…more people were hit by cars and killed.
Let the CDC handle it…the news loves this kind of stuff, I think all news agencies are run by Chicken Little.
Don’t forget, last year, the worst hurricane season on the east coast for a hundred years…the same with the year before, total destruction in some areas…and nothing.

Oh, heavens, yes. The government is no good whatsoever at handling things like immunizations or public health. That’s why it took the private sector to eradicate diseases like polio, malaria, and smallpox.
Oh, wait. It didn’t. The Federal government did. The WHO (Curse that ineffective UN!) has nearly eliminated polio worldwide, and eliminated smallpox in 1977. In other words, the government is the *only* way to handle public health in any rational way. The private market can’t do it, because you can’t just vaccinate people who can afford it and eliminate a disease.
So, no, sorry. The free market is definitely not the answer to public health issues. Deal.

Hard to say, as we have no idea how many people travelled illegaly from Mexico to Kansas or New York.
But don’t worry, Janet “my first name ain’t baby” Napolitano plans to ask people crossing the border if they’re sick. Or, at least, the ones who do so legally.
Anyone think that sick illegals might come across ON PURPOSE? After all, we’ve got more Tamiflu, and our hospitals are required to treat anyone who comes in.

And it shows how little regard I have for these “Pandemic 2009, Death Toll, 2009″ headlines…I just skim over them.
Watch the next time there is a near miss in the airlines, for the next several days there are stories about a near miss in Bangledesh, then one in Waco, then another in Jamica.
Wait until the first hurricane:
“Hurricane watch 2009, could be the worst hurricane season in a century”..the models show that after two years of near dormancy, the odds are that hurricanes will be more intense and more frequent. Causing untold deaths and further destruction of an already weakened economy.”
No charge to the AP for writing their lead story…
Any flu, any disease, in Mexico, in poverty stricken, weak medical, and uncaring corrupt government, will be a “pandemic” or a “Mexdemic”.
From now on we should have “Mexdemic” as the official term.

Shocker. They’ve been doing that with BSE(Mad Cow disease) for years.
Your USDA continues to import cattle with unacceptable infection rates into the USA while many other countries have banned our product bcs of the 1 or 2 infected animals that were purchased from Canada & ended up in the US.
I think until all the vectors for any disease, virus, or bacteria are identified, there is nothing wrong with any country taking action to prevent the spread of such.
Argentina has had rampant Foot in Mouth disease in their cattle herds for years.
And yet there are still those packing industries in this country who would bring cattle from there to be slaughtered here with little concern that US herds may be infected.
Remember the movie HUD?
Badger40 on April 27, 2009 at 11:00 AM
I wonder, too.
Mexico as far as I’m aware, has been mostly responsible for bringing back TB & Polio to the US.
I remember my ex working on TB wards down in San Antonio in the early ’90s-they were FULL of illegals who were basically kept there like prisoners bcs if not, they wouldn’t take their meds (a full regimen for a year) & then would just go out & infect people.
Another reason to secure your borders-everywhere in the world.
Disease is so easily spread in a global world, I am astonished that people don’t really understand how great a threat it really is.

Can swine flu be transmitted by passing gas?
‘Cause I’ve been saying that Obama will get his act together when swine flu out my butt.
Daggett on April 27, 2009 at 11:16 AM
I think we can absolutely count on that happening in the border states. Particularly since our government is unwilling to take any steps to prevent it. Because, of course, that would be raaaaaacist.
califcon on April 27, 2009 at 11:46 AM
We are now up to 40 cases in US and our president tells us not to do anything. Even if this flu is not the one that kills. It will be something like this. The governments, being more concerned about commerce than their citizens will hide the truth for too long in some sort of act of denial. The germ spreads throughout their county and the world, making the containment option mute. Then people of most of the western countries w/ leaders like Obama, who tell us not to do anything differently will just perpetuate the act of denial while the exponential spread continues until there is nothing we can do at all. The citizens continue on in their business w/o any real precautions.
.
My wife for example, thinks I am over reacting and she, a school teacher, no less, is not changing anything she does. If Obama had come out and say “hay you should take precautions if you live/work where large amounts of people concentrate,” reasonable people would take some simple reasonable steps to help stem the spread. I think that it is irresponsible of Obama to act as if nothing is happening.
All it takes is for the flu germ to mutate and we’re done.
JeffVader on April 27, 2009 at 11:55 AM
It is sad you actually have to TELL people to do things differently in an effort to avoid infection from anything like this.
As a school teacher myself I started getting the flu shot every year. Everyone who has contact with most people should do this automatically.
You may not get sick, but you may pass it on to someone who may die. The flu is nothing to mess with. Most people think NyQuil is a cure.
Another way to get rid of ‘germs’ is to use alcohol based cleansers-not anti bacterial stuff.
There are so many other ways people can avoid spreading infection that are easy to do once it becomes a habit, but my plain assessment of general humanity is that they are moronic sheep.
I am trying to get a little more optimistic, but it’s hard.

The common flu kills people. Old people, young people, those with compromised immune systems.
Healthy people spread it around & when the vulnerable get it, it can kill them.
And bcs it’s ‘common’ , people need to be vigilant.
That doesn’t mean necessarily getting militant about it, but people definitely need to be more aware of the risks they take & how it can affect others in our population.
Badger40 on April 27, 2009 at 12:55 PM
They stripped it out because it’s not really stimulus. It’s a regular budget item. Which is why it was passed in the regular budget. In fact, Bush asked for the money, so thank him for caring.
Oh, and while you’re denouncing folks, Chuck Shumer gladly listed pandemic flu money as one of the “porky things” that had been cut out of the stimulus package.
But hey, don’t let a few facts get in the way of your outrage.

hawksruleva on April 27, 2009 at 1:12 PM
Sure, private industry developed a vaccine for polio and smallpox. Who paid for the development?
And government is the *only* reliable tool for distribution of a vaccine, and universal distribution is the only way to turn a vaccine into disease eradication.
The disease isn’t a problem in America? Let the Mexicans die? Sure, I guess that’s a way of looking at it. There were only twenty confirmed cases yesterday…

I mostly agree with you.
But tell me how many companies in the USA now make vaccines compared to 20 years ago?
Why did the problem with that British vaccine company cause such a headache a while back? Surely if there were enough vaccines companies we wouldn’t have had a problem with supplies.
If govt gets involved in stuff like this, it should be to protect PATENT LAWS & to enforce the MONOPOLY laws so that ‘greedy companies’ don’t own everything.
The govt should make it somewhat friendly to actually OPEN a business, no matter what it is.
Bcs they haven’t, the only ‘people’ who can afford to start a ‘business’ are multi-national corporations.
That’s what a good job the govt has done!
Whether people like it or not, $$ talks, not compassion.
That is what gets ‘stuff’ invented.
Badger40 on April 27, 2009 at 1:23 PM
People who bought drugs paid for most of the research.
You’re saying you’d rather vaccines be shipped via the post office than via UPS or Fedex? Universal distribution isn’t how you wipe out a disease, anyway. That’s how you encourage resistance to vaccines. What you want is TARGETED distribution; you want vaccines to go to folks who are vulnerable. And the free market works really well for that. That’s why so many folks go to Kroger and Wal-mart for their flu shots.
But “universal distribution” does sound like a government plan. Spend millions making vaccines with a limited shelf life, and send them to places that aren’t seeing cases of swine flu.

No. Common flu affects 5-20% of the population every year, but only causes death in a fraction of a percent of cases, usually 40-50,000 deaths per year. And those deaths are of already weakened people due to other diseases or advanced age.
The Mexican Flu is killing otherwise healthy young adults, with a death rate of about 6% so far in Mexico, but no deaths in any developed country with advanced health care.
If it does go pandemic and affect 5-20% of world population, Mexican Flu could have a devastating effect on second and third world countries and the world economy.
Or, it might not go pandemic, or might not be as deadly as now seems. Too early to tell yet.

I’ve got a card on my desk right now from the school system. It says (paraphrased for identity purposes):
I want to remind you that the following items are still needed to complete your child’s registration: 2nd MMR, 4th Polio… Immunization clinics are being offered at three of the Elementary schools. Please note, no child will be denied immunizations due to the inability to pay.
And that’s how you eliminate polio.

Ummmmmm…..I was being rhetorical, read:
Every year for dozens of years we have had:
Flu epidemics that threaten the human race.
Weather disasters that threaten the human race
Social unrest that threaten the human race
Food poisoning that threaten the human race
Food shortages that threaten the human race
Global warming now that threaten the human race
Swine, Asian, bird, killer bees, that will threaten the human race
The fact is, every so often the human race is “threatened” by something that we can’t control…the papers are the “GODS” of science and they spew out their black magic, their voodoo, to all that don’t believe…

You forgot Global Warming.
The greatest threat that has ever existed!

Strawman-nobody is saying ignore the government but sometimes you have to think for yourself too.
I thought that is what you “question authority” types were about.
Of course, thinking, in general, appears to be a foreign concept to you.

Lou Dobbs 2006: NAFTA highway business interests force US to keep borders open during future swine flu pandemics
I found this by accident yesterday. At the closed and almost secret Security and Prosperity Partnership meetings between Bush and leaders from Canada and Mexico, where they hammered out the deal for the so-called “NAFTA highway” through Mexico, the US and Canada, Lou Dobbs reported back in 2006 that “business interests” forced the US to agree to keep the borders open at all times, even during–specifically– A SWINE FLU PANDEMIC!
“… SPP documents urging the free flow of goods and people across borders, and a wish list from business interests that borders remain open during a swine flu pandemic.”

Just heard on Savage that the Europeans and Russians are checking and stopping everything from the Americas but yet we are too chicken to close the border down there in Mexico. Maybe this is a plague promised in the last days before the Lord comes back.

I think that to be politically correct, we have to pretend that the swine flu is coming from Canada, just as much as Mexico. Otherwise, we’re just being racist.

I just got an email from the assistant of a state representative in the Texas government.
I’ve removed the names, but this was an internal memo that was being sent today, the link is to a public site though.

Yes, it could
Introducing a virus into the Mexican population, which is very poor and with low hygiene practice is an excellent way, if not the ideal way to vecter a disease into the United States, because of the huge migration of illegals into every state in the US, often into food service, cleaning, agriculture etc
An interesting sort of biological crap shoot would be to increase bird flu exposure into pig raising areas in Mexico with the hopes of a lucky hit (bird + swine). Flus are created in the laboratory of crowded populations, not in test tubes. The swine + bird flu combo is an unusual occurence

If something threatens to kill Americans, you can bet the Obama administration is right there helping…to ignore the threat and/or blame it on someone else!!
