CDC: It’s too late to contain Mexico’s swine flu; Update: Two in Kansas, eight probable in NYC

posted at 3:11 pm on April 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

This is one of those very rare times when I’m glad I’m a shut-in. A new strain of flu in one of the world’s largest cities located in the heart of a failing state: What could go wrong?

This virus is a mix of human, pig and bird strains that prompted WHO to meet Saturday to consider declaring an international public health emergency — a step that could lead to travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures. Spokesman Gregory Hartl said a decision would not be made Saturday.

Scientists have warned for years about the potential for a pandemic from viruses that mix genetic material from humans and animals. Another reason to worry is that authorities said the dead so far don’t include vulnerable infants and elderly. The Spanish flu pandemic, which killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19, also first struck otherwise healthy young adults…

The CDC says two flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, seem effective against the new strain. Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, said the company is prepared to immediately deploy a stockpile of the drug if requested. Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.

Mexico’s Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said the country has enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people — only one in 20 people in greater Mexico City alone — and that the medicine will be strictly controlled and handed out only by doctors.

If it’s susceptible to OTC drugs, presumably we’re okay; developing countries, not so much. In fact, with 60 already dead in Mexico and another 1,000 suspected cases, I wonder if the next drug racket the cartels down there get into won’t be Tamiflu. All we need now is for the virus to migrate to Pakistan, where the country’s already teetering, and we’ll have a true apocalyptic clusterfark to end all clusterfarks.

As for the immigration angle, the boss is already all over it. A perfectly secure border wouldn’t stop this from spreading — see, e.g., SARS hopping across the Pacific from China to Canada in 2003 — but it sure might slow it down. Ah well, it’s “racist” to even think such things. Apologies.

Update: Here we go.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirms two cases of swine flu in Kansas…

New York officials announced Saturday that 8 students there probably have swine flu, but they’re unsure of strain type.

How’s it spreading to so many far-flung places? There should be a chain of infection via visitors to or from Mexico, no?

Just another isolated incident.

The virus showed up in Mexico at the same time as the President’s visit? Some guy that met Barry dies the next day of flu like symptoms? I just read this story on Bloomberg, not PrisonPlanet? What???

Could terrorists be using our politically correct social structure to spread a disease? Pure genius.

Anyone that tries some kind of common sense measure to attempt to protect the general public…well, I feel sorry for that person.

The colonel was not amused.

Regarding the Mexican who died the day after meeting President Obama:

USA Today: Mexico’s Health Secretary Jose Córdova …

denied reports that an administrator at Mexico’s National Anthropological Museum had died from the virus last week, saying that death appeared to be caused by pneumonia combined with other health problems. The death had caused headlines because U.S. President Barack Obama had attended a dinner at the museum on April 16.

The incubation period for flu is normally 1 to 4 days, and the meeting was on the 16th. So it appears that no member of the presidential party or accompanying press corps was infected during their Mexican visit. This lends credence to the Mexican Health Secretary’s denial. People do die of non-flu related pneumonia.

How’s it spreading to so many far-flung places? There should be a chain of infection via visitors to or from Mexico, no?

California, Texas and Kansas are all hi illegal destinations. One report said the prep school kids became sick on the same day, which suggests a single vector like food handler

Monitoring airports is a joke although it may protect passengers

The lack of hygiene in illegals may kill us. Our local illegal’s chosen shopping mart is filled with kids coughing mouth wide open. There is no use of kleenex and no understanding of the need to cover the mouth

One report said many of the victims had to go quickly to ventilators recalling the flu of 1918, where lung cells burst filling the lungs with fluid (pneumonia) causing rapid death. Similar to the hanta virus on the Indian reservation a few years back where young natives with hanta infection could collapse and die at a party from the same lung issue

My grandmother witnessed the 1918 epidemic. She recalled seeing ‘closed due to illness’ being put on the butcher’s in the morning, and a black wreath being hung for his death when she passed by that night. People were dying in one day of going sick

Symptoms include eye pain as well as normal flu symptoms. I wouldn’t wait to go to a doctor if I had shortness of breath or lung pain

This is not good. They are emphasizing the swine part because of the last pandemic, but it is the bird flu part that could be the killer

I’ve been up all night, blasted insomnia!!!!!!

My family just got over some bug the other week…quick sore throat, lots of coughing, chills, etc. and it went away within the week. Dad just had something the other day and sister has it now, as well…and both are regularly around my kids. we haven’t had a fever, though…wonder what it is? So many symptoms are allergy related, too. Kind of confused, at the moment…
and sleepy. ahh.

Mommypundit on April 26, 2009 at 3:22 AM

It’s too early for panic or to declare a pandemic.
`
Never hurts to protect yourself, though, especially with a threat on the horizon. Cut back on attending public events and using public facilities, wash hands frequently, and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer like Purel.
`
If you have to go somewhere, drive instead of taking public transportation. If a business question can be resolved with a phone call or via email instead of personal contact, do it.
`
British Prime Minister David Lloyd George was once berated in the House of Commons for having wasted money on “unnecessary precautions.” He defended himself by demanding how the member “could be so certain the precautions would have been unnecessary, had they not been taken?”
`
Sure, this is probably just another false alarm, but are you willing to bet your life on it?

The Spanish flu pandemic, which killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19, also first struck otherwise healthy young adults…

I was recently told by a practitioner here to get the “flu” shot, when the flu season was here. I have always refused the deliberate injection of foreign bodies into myself to be its host.

The doctor insisted that it is not like the “immunization” shots of the past and that we all should, be immunized, due to the outbreaks of the new strains of flu worldwide; that our health authorities are trying to immunize us from these killer strains.

Also, according to this site, the first cases of “La Grippe” here in the US originated out of Kansas. (There’s no place like home)

We know President Marxist will not do the right thing. They are not going to do what actually needs to be done. This is another crisis. Even if it isn’t a crisis yet, it will be to Barry and his thugs. And a crisis is a crisis. Barry won’t resolve or try to fix the crisis,,, he will use the crisis.
So,,, one can only wonder. We have a whole week of possibilities. Every week is a new offense to our constitution. So,, what desperate measures will need to be enacted against the people??? How can this crisis be used to its fullest potential?? Leave it up to your imagination.

JellyToast on April 26, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Well much as I think he’s a dope(especially with the Chinese thugs), he did handle the hostage thing well. Trouble is, he takes so much time to cogitate over it, that in this case, the damage could be done. I wonder if we’ll quarantine returnees from Mexico and even if we did, imagine the ihflux now of illegals trying to escape this disease. I think I’ll pray some in the next few weeks that O and friends, if they must use this crisis, will not sacrifice us all on the altar of politics. Not going to hold my breath that they will not. We are all tools as obama’s people see it.

While the illegal cross-border traffic has decreased in recent months (no jobs), it would be foolish to pretend that isn’t a potential vector. It’s worth noting that the incubation period (1-4 days)and the physical stress of crossing the border might work in our favor; you aren’t going to cross the desert with this bug in full bloom. One cargo truck stuffed to the gills with immigrants is all it would take.

Still, it looks like airplane traffic is the most dangerous vector right now, and most illegals take slower and cheaper routes.

Hey, look at it this way – if this was an extinction-level virus, North Korea would probably one of the states with the highest chances of survival. No open borders there. Doesn’t that thought just warm your heart?

In the past I seem to recall reading that the flu virus’ lethalness ‘thins out’ as it spreads and the strain becomes less powerful. Or..maybe I read the opposite? Get a flu shot every year. Recall the awfulness of the virulent but un-named flu of the 50′s and do not want to do that again if avoidable. Just heard on the radio that this years flu shot will not protect against this strain of flu. However, twas also said that possibly previous flu shots could weaken the effects of the virus should it be contracted. Also, wondered if previous severe attacks of the flu might build up the bodies store of effective anti-bodies. Had heard this before but not from anyone definitive on the subject. Que sera!

Would so many people die of spanish flu today? I don’t think so. If it was virulent as they say, i.e., you could die within 24 hours, you would need treatment asap. But it appears the deaths were caused by pneumonia. The virus would irritate your lungs and cause your body to produce secretions which in effect drown you. Today, we have anti-inflammatory drugs, which may reduce the fluid produced by the lungs, respiratory therapy, though I would think there would be a shortage of therapists and ventilators. There would also be chest tubes to drain the fluid from the lungs. I doubt they had any of these treatments in 1918.

However, twas also said that possibly previous flu shots could weaken the effects of the virus should it be contracted.

Yes I have eaten a twinkie. But I wouldn’t recommend it now to anyone. The majority of deaths in the US are now caused by obesity, i.e. diseases resulting from the apparent lack of respect to ones body.

Take a look at ingredients in white bread at your local food store, such as Wonder or Butternut. Then ask your elders if they remember all those ingredients in the foods they ate in the 50′s and 60′s.

I could ask my parents who grew up in the 20′s and 30′s. They cooked everything with lard and bacon fat. My mom is no longer with us, though my dad is still kicking around and he turns 86 this year.

I’m just ribbing you a bit. Like I said, I got no beef with one who believes like you do. If you don’t want to get a shot, fine. Immunizations do work however, though sometimes the annual ones can make a person sick.

I had my own bad experience with an immunization for Hep B. As a law enforcement guy (plus being in the military) getting the Hep B series was required. I got the first shot which made me a bit sick, I just felt bad. When I got the booster (I think it was six months later) it made me so sick it put me in the hospital. Turns out I had an allergic reaction to something in the vaccine

“Obesity” is not a cause of death btw in the strictest sense. The number one cause of death is heart disease and not everyone who gets it or has a heart attack is or ever was obese. There are a fair share of fat people who have heart disease, don’t get me wrong. But characterizing “obesity” like you are is a bit disengenuous.

Why’s it gotta be ‘white’ bread? :)

catmman on April 26, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Take a look at ingredients in white bread at your local food store, such as Wonder or Butternut. Then ask your elders if they remember all those ingredients in the foods they ate in the 50’s and 60’s.

AlreadyKnownAs on April 26, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Just because your elders don’t remember doesn’t mean that those ingredients weren’t there. The difference isn’t in the ingredients it’s in the labels telling you what the ingredients are.

I’ve been wondering this as well. No deaths outside Mexico. Why? As you suggest, there may be many economic, political and cultural reasons. Didn’t think Mexico had socialized health care, though.

I wonder if there could be different strains, with the more deadly contained in Mexico, so far.

Loxodonta on April 26, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Watch out for the PC police.

Johan Klaus on April 26, 2009 at 11:48 AM

Why? I’m already on the DHS list. So, using their definition, I am proud to admit I am a Right-wing Extremist.

Loxodonta on April 26, 2009 at 11:54 AM

When I was young, my brother had polio. Our house was quarantined. We were not allowed to have visitors, nor were we allowed to leave our property.

You dont ever want to be sick in a Mexican hospital.

doriangrey on April 26, 2009 at 11:56 AM

The Swine Flu Google Map was just updated. More reports in France, and new reports in Spain, with one report in Israel. Apparently all linked to Mexico. No deaths yet outside of Mexico is very interesting.

Loxodonta on April 26, 2009 at 10:47 AM

Congratulations! We’ve got a pandemic in our hands!

Heaven help us.

I can imagine that, but is their system 100% government run? Don’t know this.

Practically everything in Mexico is government run. Even the drug trade. A little tongue in cheek there.

Start taking a good quality pro-biotic! Keep your immune system strong!

Queen0fCups on April 26, 2009 at 12:29 PM

I already know I will get this – I’m getting queasy just thinking about it!

Queen0fCups on April 26, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Oh goody, Napolitano, who did such a spectacular job with the right wing extremist alert, making Canadian friends and tanking Arizona’s economy…

sloopy on April 26, 2009 at 12:34 PM

Too late to contain?

How few cases have to exist before it’s too late? None?

Loxodonta on April 26, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Popular Health Insurance (Seguro Popular) came into effect in Mexico in 2004.

Segurado Popular is specific package of benefits enabling people to access more than 250 health promotion and disease prevention measures, including outpatient care and hospital care for the basic specialties, antiretroviral therapy, intensive care for newborns, cancer care, and haemodialysis…and is on track for achieving universal coverage by 2010.

coldwarrior on April 26, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Everytime my grandmother gets sick in Mexico, me and the rest of my family here in America has to pay thousands of dollars to the hospital in cash to have my grandmother treated, as well as thousands more if she needs to stay longer than a few days. Every, single, time.

Local quarantine makes perfect sense. Costs much less than sealing off the country.

The japanese are screening airports. How many airports in the US? Thought so. Closing the border is probably not possible. There’s a huge amount of trade. Changing the regulations causes enormous headaches just on the Canada/US border and on both sides.

Obama is getting in a round of golf this am.

1230 briefing at the WH? Bet it is late if he is suppose to be there.

journeyintothewhirlwind on April 26, 2009 at 11:51 AM

I hope he’s delegated this to CDC, DHS, and his fool whitehouse press toad. It would be a rare political mistake on his part. It won’t make any significant dent in his poll numbers but the MSM will mumble a little louder. Every little bit counts.

gh on April 26, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Great. Activate the Obama Corps™…send’em to Mexico.

With Obummer in the WH, we need the flu as much as Pakistan needs the Taliban & nukes.

Earlg on April 26, 2009 at 12:57 PM

Latest news on google (flu press conference, sort by date).

Anyone got anything on the WH (no tv here) ?

gh on April 26, 2009 at 12:57 PM

Says Napolitano and “health officials” are to speak (link above).

Fox has a live stream linked on their home page.

gh on April 26, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Every case has a direct link to the Mexican epicenter.
It gives one pause about our uncontrolled borders, does it not?

michaelo on April 26, 2009 at 1:03 PM

Ok. No need for Obama to be there. Basically there’s been 5 years (since SARS) to prepare for this. And the press, of course, is being responsible.
