The obligatory “Palin launches legal defense fund” post
posted at 4:25 pm on April 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
In which I try to earn cheap brownie points with the readers who hate me because they’re convinced I hate her by dumping some Hot Air traffic into her donation box. Her legal bills stand north of $500,000 with more coming; the maximum allowable contribution at the site is $150. Figuring an average donation of $20, and assuming that she does the smart thing by calling in to Rush’s show on Monday to put out the word, I figure she’ll be fully paid up by, oh, say, before the show’s over. But let’s poll it. Assume, for predictive purposes, that she doesn’t call in.
In other Sarahcuda news, she parted ways with her DC-based fundraising consultant today in “the latest sign of a divide between the governor’s official Alaska staff and those advising her on the national level.” Cutting loose a tie to the Beltway? I don’t know if this 2012 thing is happening, kids.

Already donated to the fund.

Gosh… her legal woes are more costly than her Nieman Marcus makeover.
benny shakar on April 24, 2009 at 4:34 PM
She can’t go on radio programs or other media avenues to promote to the fund herself as Governor. It’s up to the media and her supporters to actively promote the fund.
Are you implying that she doesn’t wish to run in 2012?
TimeTraveler on April 24, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Do you have to have a PayPal account to donate?
Mark1971 on April 24, 2009 at 4:35 PM
I don’t care if the 2012 thing is happening or not. I gave the maximum of $150 to her legal defense fund. And I never give money to either the RSC or the RNCC or the Repub Party.
So, go ahead and extrapolate … people who vote Republican, are Conservatives, hardly ever give money to Republicans are now going to give the maximum to Sarah Palin.
I don’t need to listen to Rush. I’m done. I can’t give any more. Too bad. If I could I would.
Now, it’s time for Sarah Palin and her supporters in Alaska to turn the tables and start suing the Democrats and ass-wipe Republicans in Alaska to break them financially.
Do it, Sarah. Kick some ass.

Allahpundit on April 24, 2009 at 4:43 PM
“I don’t know if this 2012 thing is happening, kids.”
No one knows if anyone is running at this point–I suspect it will depend on a whole lotta factors, most notably the favorability ratings of the current president.
That said, I talked with someone on Tuesday who told me that Palin’s PAC was interviewing/hiring consultants, and did I know anyone who was looking. I can’t imagine the PAC would be doing that if they were intending on folding.
howIroll on April 24, 2009 at 4:45 PM
Do you canonize anyone? Hitchens? The young Ms. McCain?
BadgerHawk on April 24, 2009 at 4:45 PM
I tried to donate online, and it says my first name is invalid. Excuse me, but I think my name is perfectly ok.

I another proud supporter of Ms. Palin’s fund.
ny59giants on April 24, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Good for you.
It’s the references to a cult of personality, or dismissal of her support as populist, etc, that grates on the sane.
Regardless, in accordance with O’s ‘new way’ of criminalizing politics, I’m glad she’s opened a way for people to help her with the unfortunate expense of the political litigation.
Spirit of 1776 on April 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Be interesting to see how fast this gets funded. Could be a good indicator of her true support level…..
catlady on April 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
I am disappointed they limited the donations to $150.00
I told Cornyn in his fundraising letter for the Republican Senatorial committee fund raising letter this week that every time he sent me a letter claiming “he learned the lessons of 2008″, I was going to send the donation to Sarah instead. This legal fund is a good start. Meanwhile I told COrnyn that as long as he is committing funds to Specter, I would also send money to Specter’s primary opponent every time I got a fund raising letter from the republican senate election committee. So it looks like Toomy gets my next donation, since this legal trust fund is limited to $150.
Every time I get a fund raising letter for Scooter Libby, I donate too. I am still pissed Bush didn’t pardon him.
karenhasfreedom on April 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
That’s what I figured, but some of the anti-theists have come full circle with worshipping mother nature, or logic, or some other crap like that. Just had to make sure you were still a purist!
BadgerHawk on April 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Yeah. Our next candidate should come DIRECTLY from the beltway. Want change? Go to Washington to find a candidate.
portlandon on April 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Good for her. Hopefully she’ll raise so much money that those ankle-biters in Alaska who keep filing frivilous ethics complaints will give up.
NebCon on April 24, 2009 at 4:52 PM
Does calling Rush off the air to let him know about the fund constitute “promoting” it?
Or do you have to take out radio and TV ads before it constitutes “promoting”?
MarkTheGreat on April 24, 2009 at 4:54 PM
Your missing an important point: no one should be exposed to $500,000 worth of legal fees to run for President.
RedSoxNation on April 24, 2009 at 4:56 PM
Seven Percent Solution on April 24, 2009 at 4:38 PM
As I noted in the headlines, this would be an interesting model for a national fundraising campaign.
If she’s going for 2012, she doesn’t want it overly restrictive. It would be nice to draw a contrast with the Obama machine, though, especially if he tries to pull the same tactics next time.
Does run the risk of sacrificing funding for “purity” of course.
cs89 on April 24, 2009 at 4:57 PM
How about it Allah, are you gonna send her afew bucks for the defense fund?
portlandon on April 24, 2009 at 4:57 PM
We don’t need to call Rush about this. We know he reads Hot Air. He uses the content on this show fairly often now when he is discussing the topics of the day.
Hi RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been a big fan of yours since 1992 when I found you in the KFI dial out in Los Angeles. I was an entrepreneur at the time, very strapped for cash and saved my pennies to subscribe to his newsletter at the time. I have been a subscriber ever since and added 24/7, too.
karenhasfreedom on April 24, 2009 at 4:57 PM

OT – ny59 – does WITP mean anything to you?

I’ve heard it called many things, but canonized is a new one.
thomasaur on April 24, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Is it against the law for Sarah’s supporters at the trust to give her our contact information so she can build a donor’s list for her campaigns? Just curious. But then again, when they file the reports, it becomes public anyway.
And if you don’t have paypal, when you get to the page in the donation sequence, there is a section to click for a credit card donation, but I didn’t have one near the computer, so I used paypal. I think all politicians should link to paypal for donations. Easy as pie.

portlandon on April 24, 2009 at 5:40 PM
In this economy, I can think of no better cause then donating to the legal defense fund of a governor of some other state who had a bunch of ethics issues.
Why buy food for my family when I can pay off .01% of Palin’s lawyers’ fees?

The people that could and should put a stop to this lawsuit crap are the citizens of Alaska. These actions won’t cost Sarah a dime but it’s cost the Alaska taxpayer $million so far – and running.
~
My bet is that before this is all over and done some of those that filed their gutter-runoff complaints will get stuck with part of the bill from the State.
Hal-9000 on April 24, 2009 at 5:45 PM
Hal-9000 on April 24, 2009 at 5:47 PM
No, that’s unfair. Donations aren’t about the person giving the money. If he gave or didn’t give, it’s his business, not ours.
Don’t try to guilt him on this. It’s unbecoming.

I’m glad she’s straightening things out. Truth is, she’s got a good two to three years to figure out how to run a Presidential campaign, and I think SarahPAC is taking plenty of donations with or without any particular staffer.
