Still no rush to hire construction workers

posted at 8:44 am on April 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

In his Earth Day speech on Wednesday, Barack Obama claimed that Porkulus and its tax breaks for weatherization and residential energy efficiency had set off a “rush” to hire construction workers to make homes more energy efficient.  Yesterday, his Labor Department begged to differ.  They adjusted the numbers announced earlier this month on jobless claims upward, past analysts’ expectations, and the analysts predicted that unemployment would rise for the next 12 months into double digits:

Worse-than-expected news on unemployment and home sales Thursday dampened optimism that a broad economic recovery might be near.

Many analysts don’t expect the housing slide to show signs of stabilizing until the second half of this year. They said layoffs may be at their high point, but that the jobless rate, already at a 25-year high, will keep rising until the middle of 2010.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial claims for unemployment compensation rose to a seasonally adjusted 640,000 last week, up from a revised 613,000 the previous week. That was slightly more than analysts’ expectations of 635,000.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Realtors said sales of existing homes fell 3 percent in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.57 million units, with February revised down to 4.71 million units. Sales had been expected to fall to an annual rate of 4.7 million units, according to Thomson Reuters.

If sales of existing houses dropped, new starts will drop as well.  One of the problems left over from the housing bubble collapse is an excess of inventory, as there are now more homes than buyers.  Foreclosures make the problem worse, although those have been mainly concentrated in specific areas where the subprime lending created the most inflation of housing prices — California, Las Vegas, and Florida.

Porkulus has not reversed the loss of jobs, nor has it created a “rush” to hire construction workers.  Government programs for weatherization will not create massive stimulus to the economy, mainly because they require people to spend money they may not have rather than simply cut their taxes on the front end to get the money to them.  The Obama tax cut of $13 per week will not stimulate that kind of spending.  Until people feel secure about their jobs and their businesses, they will cut back on expenditures and reserve their cash for potential setbacks.

Unfortunately, we’ve committed to the $787 billion price tag, and we’re not likely to get any short-term stimulus out of it, as these numbers show pretty clearly.  What we will get is long-term debt that will hinder long-term growth.  Obama claimed that the benefits of the stimulus in the short run would compensate for that, but with unemployment expected to rise above 10% over the next year, his gamble looks like snake eyes now.

This was all covered in the run up to the Porkulus bill. The idiots of the country didn’t listen then, and they won’t listen now. They’re not smart enough to understand the basic, simple economic principle of supply and demand.
It’s a stain on the American indoctrination, errrrr, education system.

The truth is such a nuisance to this well-meaning administration.

If we would all just follow blindly then we could enjoy our little houses, shiny new electric cars, and the joy of watching our loved ones die while waiting for surgery.

That is, just before we are vaporized a few enemy combatants that didn’t get the memo that we just want to play nice.

That will not happen until people quit voting for democrats, statists & marxists.
Have the majority of Americans lost their minds? And these polls that say Obama is still very popular are very troubling. You cannot trust the MSM, and you cannot trust these polls any longer. Obama is probably paying all these poll companies with your tax dollars. Until sanity is able to prevail then they will not be any security.

This is OT but it kind of fits.

Interesting point from a headline thread yesterday: Roughly 70-125 people were killed each day during the 8,000 odd days Saddam was in power. Over the 2,000 odd days of the Iraq War 50 people were killed each day (110,000 total casualties).

Using the current administration’s own lexicon, Bush’s War saved or created between 20 and 75 lives a day for the past 6 years.

While I expect the hard core lefties in Congress to blindly accept whatever Obowa is offering, why do the moderate dems accept it too? They all can’t be this crazy yet it seems that few are resisting the massive tide of spending.

In fairness, Obama did intimate that most of the 1,000,000 jobs created would come from the ‘Green’ sector.

Could he have meant, ‘Mean Joe Greene Sector?’ If so, Mean Joe retired in 2004 and moved to Flower Mound, Texas, population 63,526 as of the 2006 census. Frankly, the whole thing seems a little cryptic to me, and I don’t see how such a small population center can create the necesary volume of new jobs required, but clearly that’s what Obama meant, so liberals, pack your bags.

And Flower Mound, gird your loins and start stocking up on wheat germ and Birkenstocks…

The listing was typical of government and included 6 jobs if my memory serves me:

So, 5 people supporting one persons labor efforts doing things the average person should be doing to lower their utility bills.

The report also said that they get most of their cement from Mexico and China, who do not have any carbon standards, so any type of carbon savings will be nothing.

Government programs for weatherization will not create massive stimulus to the economy, mainly because they require people to spend money they may not have rather than simply cut their taxes on the front end to get the money to them.

The notion of stimulus by way of deficit-financed tax cut is no less Keynesian (and thus no less incorrect) that the notion of stimulus by way of deficit-financed government spending. Henry Hazlitt explains the relevant concepts for the layman in Chapter 2 of his Economics in One Lesson.

Rather than attempting to “stimulate” the economy, a more sound approach would be to stop using the government to divert productive activity into less-useful channels. Until Republicans start to demand the complete separation of state and economy, they will be merely the flip side of the Democrats’ coin.

Unemployment getting worse? WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED THIS WOULD HAPPEN?

After all, Obama’s “Expiration of Bush tax cuts” would make businesses want to hire, right?

And Obama “Forced Unionization” under the Employee Free Choice Act would really make me want to fatten my payrolls right about now…..NOT!

And Obama’s Global Warming bullshit restricting energy use should be a real catalyst for business expansion, right?

How about government mandates placed on company-provided health coverage? Doesn’t that make you want to just go out and hire with reckless abandon?

How about having no statute of limitation to file discrimination lawsuits? Great strategy for adding to your employee numbers?

And all that is only for starters.

The closer Obama got to the White House, starting 2 years ago when the Dow was at 14,000, the worse the economy got. Obama certainly helped to crash the market, the economy and the employment numbers just because of his promises (threats) during his Democrat campaign. As those threats become reality, expect even successful companies to make deeper cuts just to try and protect themselves.

If sales of existing houses dropped, new starts will drop as well

While this is normally true, Feb saw the opposite, with new home sales increasing for the month. A minor blip – but an important one.

Considering a month after the new year (for tax purposes) people who could actually afford to buy and build a new home did just that, without muddying in the “foreclosure” auction and countless papers to file. Low rates, low construction costs – it makes perfect sense why this blip occurred.

As to new homes and existing sales moving forward – add in the expensive “green initiative” of The Dope – and you have less a chance to spur these 2.

There is zero incentive for any manufacturer, consumer or middle man business models to go green, at a higher cost – when no one is buying. If the Dope needs a clue – he can look at core sales of any expensive tech device or product , its relation to cost and market share. Even the Apple loyalists got pissed when the iPod and iPhone costs went down within a year.

Its Econ 101.

The Obama tax cut of $13 per week will not stimulate that kind of spending.

Ed, just a quick correction to this: There is NO tax cut of $13 per week, just a change in withholding formulas leaving about $13 per week more in take-home pay. That means that there is an overall net change of $0 for taxpayers. What they take home now they won’t receive in refund next year, or worse, will have to pay in taxes owed.

Living in So California, and being in Law Enforcement for the last 20 years, I’ve seen, heard, and interacted with too many people to count.

One of the obvious constants is that the vast majority of Construction Workers in California are Latino. The vast majority of them are illegal immigrants, and the majority of the ones that work for city and state construction crews are Border-Crossers from Mexico with work permits. They sit in line at the border to cross to the US every Sunday night/Monday morning, drive to work, and usually either stay at a co-op apartment with other Latino’s or sleep in their trucks during the week. They go back to Mexico on Friday evenings for the weekend bringing all their hard earned money with them back to Mexico.

Given the numbers I’ve encountered over the decades of my career, the amount of money being pumped into Mexico’s economy from American employment of illegal immigrants and the Border-Crossers has got to be a mind boggling and staggeringly huge amount of money. I can only imagine what it must be like in the other border states with the Mexican border area’s that dwarfs California’s border area, Arizona and Texas.

The flood gates will be opened once Uncle Obammie, Auntie Botoxlosi, Grandpa Scotchie Kennedy, et al, make all the illegal immigrants citizens and their Porkulus objective(s) start building steam.

It will hardly benefit actual American’s who need it most and it will be a drop in the bucket for the American economy. However, Mexico will rake it in like never before. And we’ll still be in the same boat we are in now.

That’s because Obama is focusing on the “saving” part of his plan to “save or create” jobs. So every time you see job losses, just think how much worse it would have been if Obama hadn’t been saving jobs at the same time.

I was going to do a bathroom remodel this summer but those bastards at Bank of Amerika suspended my home equity line of credit! So, F-you Barry!

The Messiah is a fraud. There won’t be jobs, unless you count the extra federal employees needed to carry our money to the US Treasury.

The problem with home sales numbers is half are foreclosures

AP 04-23-09

The Realtors group estimates about half of sales nationwide are from foreclosures or other distressed properties. First-time homebuyers purchased about half of all homes sold last month

There is a fire sale going on. The houses are being sold for pennies to first timers. That does not mean real price homes are selling, or new construction will sell with the yard sale underway.

Home prices are in for another 20 percent drop so the crash will not be over soon

First timers are the few and young who did not already have mortgages, or unsaleable homes, or debt. They are a small group the banks will loan to, Banks currently are financing the sales of their own assets and not much else.

Here we are, working for The One
Out here on the modern Autobahn.

Merrily we sing praises for Dear Leader,
He feeds us, he makes us well.

Now it is time to eat.
We thank you, Dear Leader
For our sustenance.

(traditional Chinese instruments and violin-roughly translated I’m afraid).

Until people feel secure about their jobs and their businesses, they will cut back on expenditures and reserve their cash for potential setbacks.

Including and especially pertaining to hiring new workers, and retaining workers at current reimbursement levels. Which adds to the malaise about jobs, puts a chill on expenditures, etc. It’s going to show up as reduced demand for more than just houses. And it’s going to be very interesting to see how that kind of deflationary pressure will compete against the hyperinflation that’ll be absolutely necessary to pay off all the sky-pie we did end up buying in the last few months (nevermind the outlays that we’re beholden to from before with SSI and other handouts).

I try and stay positive and believe there is some sort of popular undercurrent ready to go on the offensive against this near-criminal administration, but the signs seem few and far between. I’m ready to visit D.C. with a million other people.

Armed or Unarmed?

I think we’ve started to cross the line of necessity in this issue.
