Poll: Toughest match-up for Obama in 2012 is … Huckabee
posted at 8:07 pm on April 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
Seems logical. Who better to champion the small-government vogue that’s sweeping the right than a guy who once supported a federal ban on smoking in the workplace?
Say, wasn’t McCain hypothetically the toughest match-up for Democrats prior to last year’s election?
Huckabee fares the best of the top Republican contenders at this point in time, trailing Obama 49-42.
That margin is basically the same as what Obama won by against John McCain in November. Huckabee also has the best favorability numbers of the Republican quartet at 42/34. Even after running for President last year a quarter of the country doesn’t have an opinion about him one way or the other.
Sarah Palin’s numbers are an interesting conundrum. She easily has the best favorability among Republicans voters, with 76% saying they have a positive opinion of her. The other three range from 60-67 with the party base. But she also has the largest percentage of GOP voters- 21%- who say they would vote for Obama if she ended up being the party nominee. So for the folks in the party who don’t like her that feeling is strong enough they’d rather vote for a Democrat. It adds up to a 12 point deficit for her, 53-41. Overall the electorate has a negative opinion of Palin, 42/49.
Crosstabs here. Interestingly, of the four Republicans included in the poll — Huckabee, Palin, Romney, and Gingrich — the first three pull fully 18 percent of the black vote head-to-head with Obama. (Newt pulls nine.) As for Sarahcuda:

It’s women who are killing her, not men. In fact, only Gingrich does worse among women against The One than she does. As for this:

Not only are her numbers among young voters the worst of the four, but Mitt, Huck, and even Newt are actually net favorable among that group. I don’t know how to explain that except to blame it on Tina Fey for turning her into such a joke among SNL’s target audience. Any other theories?

Yeah, the poll is a joke.

This is complete bullshit. It’s the second coming of McCain. We had the media doing this 10-15 years ago in Canada. Don’t fall for it.

Small government vogue sweeping the nation? The only people it is sweeping are those who voted for McCain in the first place. If anything, big government vogue is sweeping the morons who voted for President Government. At last Huckabee would have kept the entire South in our column.
Speedwagon82 on April 23, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Sorry but Huckabee has no chance in being the Republican nominee in 2012. It ain’t gonna happen.

You might have a point there. I actually think from Romney, Palin, Gringrich, and Huckabee……
Huckabee will probably be the one that loses in a huge landslide.

Sure. I do know a lot of Republicans around here who like Huckabee. And if the number one pick was Rudy {which is was a year or so before the election} there would be people upset about that.
No matter who it is, someone is gonna be unhappy.
But it is way too early to make a pick.
Terrye on April 23, 2009 at 8:14 PM
Well, if I remember right Huckabee did not support any bailouts or any kind of help from Washington.
Terrye on April 23, 2009 at 8:15 PM
Automatic sign the poll is crap.
Obama could start feeding people to alligators every week and he’d still get 90%+ of the black vote.

I know I’m not being a good Catholic when I say this, but…

madmonkphotog on April 23, 2009 at 8:15 PM
I absolutely can not stand Huckabee. I do not believe this poll for one minute. The may as well have thrown in Meghan McCain as VP.
ORconservative on April 23, 2009 at 8:16 PM
If Sarah Palin runs…she will win. Sorry folks. Many of you try to dismiss her, and by trotting out McCain-like candidates is going to make it an even bigger win. I am sick to death of the Republican Party trying to sell me on milk toast candidates that have the personality of a limp noodle. Before I vote for Huckabee, I will vote for the Libertarian candidate.

Seems we tried that “our loser” is better than “your loser” last time around. Didn’t work out so well. And both lived up to our expectations of them too. One successfully pulled the wool over the eyes of the majority of voters. The other gave up when the going got tough.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
Can’t we find some little known State Senator that can run for US Senate in 2010 and President in 2012?
It’s the completely unknown candidate from left field (far, far left field) that’s going to win this thing, if 2008 has taught me anything.

I know a lot of people here don’t like Huck, but I think he would have given a better showing last time and may have won. Remember if Fred would have got out of the race after New Hamp, Huck or Mitt could or should have won SC. I believe Huck would have. That said, I have posted this before… A friend of mine in VA was a big Warner fan and wanted him to run for Pres, when Obama got the nod the only person he and the people he was associated with were worried about was Huck. My friend is in the know on some level in VA when it comes to Dem party up there. They were worried about Huck and no one else. So just info. Don’t bash me, its the truth. My friend is in Cantor’s district and has stated he may mount a challenge, he is that into it.
kara26 on April 23, 2009 at 8:22 PM
I honestly believe that by the time Obama’s first term is done we could throw up anyone and the majority of people in this country would grab on like a lifeline and not let go.
TXMomof3 on April 23, 2009 at 8:23 PM
You’re right – if it comes down to Huck vs. Obama, I will not hesitate to vote for Huck. However, for the primary, my vote, money and time is going to Palin.

Yes it is about turning Sarah Palin into a joke. The left see the power of their satire and that is why you don’t see any skits on SNL making fun of “the one.” He is only a secondary character in the skits while they make fun of Tim the Treasurer or Joe the Biden.

Everytime Sarah Palin is attacked, belittled or dismissed she only gains strength. Let’s see how much money SarahPAC has raised versus the other candidates and then we will have a conversation/debate.
She is also anti-establishment and so many of us are sick of both parties that she is the easiest and best choice. Huckabee is a progressive, just like McCain. He just hides behind his good ole boy demeanor.
