Pelosi on waterboarding: I knew nothing

posted at 5:39 pm on April 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

Or rather, almost nothing. She admits she was told that waterboarding could be used but insists she was never told it would be used, which I can only take to mean she was sufficiently comfortable with the practice in theory as not to call a halt to it in the conceptual stage.

Needless to say, according to Porter Goss, she’s a liar:

Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, who in 2002 was the ranking Democrat on the House committee, has said in public statements that she recalls being briefed on the methods, including waterboarding. She insists, however, that the lawmakers were told only that the C.I.A. believed the methods were legal — not that they were going to be used.

By contrast, the ranking Republican on the House committee at the time, Porter J. Goss of Florida, who later served as C.I.A. director, recalls a clear message that the methods would be used.

“We were briefed, and we certainly understood what C.I.A. was doing,” Mr. Goss said in an interview. “Not only was there no objection, there was actually concern about whether the agency was doing enough.”

That jibes with WaPo’s blockbuster from December 2007 describing a virtual tour Pelosi (among others) was given of one of the CIA’s black sites, replete with descriptions of waterboarding used on detainees. And it jibes with Pete Hoekstra writing today in the Journal that Congress knew a lot more about all of this than its more “enlightened” members would have you believe. But then, as MKat reminds us, we’ve seen this movie before: The Democrats start strong on foreign policy ventures, drift left as their base’s shrieking grows noisier, and then play dumb to get themselves off the hook. The more I think about the show trials Obama wants for “torturers,” the more I think they’re going to blow up in his face: Much of the GOP is up front about its support for enhanced interrogation but revelations about how Democrats backed it too will be genuinely shocking. By all means, more sunshine on their hypocrisy, phony sanctimony, and opportunism. Pelosi’s just the beginning.

Pelosi is lying through her teeth. Maybe there should be a reading of the transcripts of these meetings, so as to refresh her memory.

Air Pelosi’s “I knew nuththink” defense would not have flown with even Sergeant Klink.

And she still knows “NOTHING”. And she is 2nd in line for the POTUS. Lets all sleep well. If she knew this was an option, how could this idiot think that it might not be used. They should do away with the House/Senate Intelligence Committee’s, because none have common sense let alone intelligence.

hillbilly on April 23, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Cheney wouldnt be insisting those other memos be released if they didnt prove those attacks were stopped.

becki51758 on April 23, 2009 at 6:32 PM

How often are members of Congress (especially the Speaker of the House) pulled in as witnesses in a criminal prosecution? Or if it is a Democratic congressional investigation (i.e. political witch hunt) the same congressmen who sat in on the meetings are now the inquisitors. We won’t get any information from them.

Even if Ms Pelosi is called in to tesify, she would probably claim that she couldn’t discuss the meetings because they were ‘classified’ or some such rot or more likely she will play dumb or lie. Bottom line, in my opinion, Ms Nancy will never testify one way or the other.

I believe either type of investigation (criminal or congressional) is chock full of political risks … much more for the prosecutors than the prosecuted. This type of trial could end up as almost ‘McCarthy-esque’ in its atmosphere and could really backfire. Most people’s basic instinct is their safety first … before high ideals and if they prove that these measures truly saved lives then a re-examination of our priorities should be in order. If not, and an attack occurs the Obama administration will NEVER recover – not even the magic teleprompter could get him out of that mess.

Even if the Dems and the administration are successful in their witch hunt, in the end it will do significant harm to our country’s security. No one is going to be a winner.

marklmail on April 23, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Why lie when the whole world knows you’re lying? Because the truth to a liberal is not what is actually true, but what the liberal wants the truth to be. It is becoming clear that a liberal’s brain does not correlate to the truth and can’t comprehend what the concept of reality really is.

volsense on April 23, 2009 at 6:34 PM

This came up in 07, as noted, that all the House and Senate leadership knew damn well exactly, if not via demonstration, what was going on.

Pelosi is already in deep guano in a poll of a few weeks ago about “who can you trust in DC?”, and this will add no luster to this horrible woman’s rep.

Will she be reelected? I expect so. She represents her district well-liar, thief, hypocrite, an author whose genius is lost on the slobs of America (so her book failed)…the list goes on. The biggest clash she has is she isn’t likely to be gay. Otherwise, fits right in.

Harry Schell on April 23, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Would you be willing to make that statement under oath Madame Speaker? I thought not.

smellthecoffee on April 23, 2009 at 6:34 PM

It just amazes me the lies they are allowed to get away with. This is why we are frustrated, they can not, will not take responsibility for their role just to destroy other peoples lives for political gain. We knew he was capable of this after they went after Joe the Plumber and the lies they spewed about Sarah Palin.

lwssdd on April 23, 2009 at 6:35 PM

Democrats use lying as a political device. Witness Obama’s statute of limitations on anything he says, Pelosi here and after her dressing down by the Pope, Barney Frank saying he isn’t responsible at all for the meltdown of the housing business, Murtha’s terrible comments about our troops, Reid saying the war is lost, etc., etc. With the MSM in their pocket they aren’t held accountable. But they will imprison a Republican who didn’t out Valerie Plame in a head hunt for Cheney. When the Rio Linda types figure out that the Democrats have been running Congress since 2006, we might get real change.

Boehner said at a press conference in the Capitol.

The techniques discussed include waterboarding, slamming detainees into walls, and depriving them of sleep for up to 11 days.

Boehner argued that a discussion of such torture techniques was “inappropriate,” as it could tip off U.S. enemies to the tactics used and “denigrate” the United States and its allies. Torture is illegal under U.S. and international law.

Now here come Michael Steele to clean up Boehner’s mess.

Regarding his use of the T-word, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel writes, “It is clear from the context that Boehner was simply using liberals’ verbiage to describe these interrogation techniques. The United States does not torture.”

Dear ‘getalife:’

I believe that waterboarding is torture; I frankly find arguments to the contrary distasteful and a little too evocative of Clinton’s famous, “Depends on what your meaning of ‘is,’ is.” I think the real question here is do you support the use of torture under very specific conditions. Now before you answer, consider that the person to be tortured has wired one of your close family members to a bomb and the clock is ticking. Would you authorize the use of torture now? If your answer is ‘yes,’ welcome to the human race and a world imperfect and uncertain. If having considered all this your answer still remains ‘no,’ then you are clearly operating on a spiritual/cerebral plain that I cannot even begin to imagine…

CaptFlood on April 23, 2009 at 8:47 PM

Move to a country that actually tortures? What like Obama’s new best friend Hugo?

Listen, waterboarding is not torture. It really is not. We went through the cold war with both sides doing much worse things than this to each other and I doubt very much if the Democrats gave a rat’s ass. Or the Independents or the Republicans.

This is just a faux issue designed to give self righteous sanctimonious uninformed blowhards the opportunity to tell the rest of us to get out.

So, should Obama get out if he is sending people off to countries who do a lot worse than water board people?

Terrye on April 23, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Dear ‘Terrye:’

This from a simple Google dictionary search:

tor·ture (tôrchr)
n.
1.
a. Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion.
b. An instrument or a method for inflicting such pain.

Being bound to a table and forced to experience all the sensations of drowning over and over and over again would seem to fit the bill.

Look, I respect your opinion, and trust me when I say that I despise the liberal mindset and the inherent contradictions therein more than most. But I wish my team would stop trying to split hairs and simply step up to the plate on this issue. I agree; being flayed alive or having a burning poker shoved up your rectum is loads worse, but it’s all torture.

Let’s leave the linguistic and/or ethical shenanigans to Pelosi’s team. I’ve got to believe we’re better than that.
