Oh my: Minuteman founder to challenge McCain in Arizona primary
posted at 4:45 pm on April 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
Is this going to be another one of those half-hearted blogosphere crusades, a la Murtha’s House races, where we rah-rah sporadically for some scrappy right-wing challenger and he ends up losing by 15-20 points?
Either we’re in this the whole way, with gusto, or we’re out. Decide now.
Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the anti-immigration movement, will announcing tomorrow at an event on the Mexican border that he’s resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary.
From a forthcoming release:
“John McCain has failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation’s borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness,” Simcox said. “He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation’s border security hostage to his amnesty schemes. Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation’s problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough.”
He’s already accepting donations. Ben Smith thinks he’ll be a “serious local headache” for McCain, but I suspect that depends on how hard The One pushes amnesty this year. If it turns into the sort of galvanizing issue for the base that it was two years ago, Maverick’s in trouble. If not, not. He can’t really afford to tack right on the issue in the primary lest he alienate the Latino voters — 30 percent demographically — that he’ll need to win the general, especially in a state that’s already blue enough to have elected Napolitano governor. So it’s “comprehensive immigration reform” or bust. Exit question: Donate, or save those hard-earned recession dollars for knocking off a Democrat somewhere? Bear in mind that if he does upset McCain, the seat will almost certainly go blue in the general.

Squid- It seems that YOU get to determine sillyness, I’m sorry but just hide and watch. Napolitano was elected by the Phoenix 40 and you see the results. It won’t happen again And while your at it tell me your silly plan again! Elect rino’s to keep democraps out, just who the hell does that help. Your saying were damned if we do and damned if we don’t, you might want to life that way but sane people don’t
jainphx on April 21, 2009 at 10:48 PM
So you’re saying there is no one else in Arizona to run against McCain and we have to settle for someone who “can’t win?” Yeah, that makes sense…why not find a Conservative candidate who can beat McCain and the Dems. And no way would I send $50 to someone until I know more about him that I like and respect, and so far Simcox ain’t it.

Deanna- you are 100% right, we can and we will.
jainphx on April 21, 2009 at 10:51 PM
I dont want to “life” any way but my own.
I have my own set of problems here at home base, where my guv is giving me fits. Not because he is a RINO but because he does nothing. I just want good government. My state has had great guvs who were both D and R and HORRIBLE guvs who were both D and R.

And yes, my definition of silliness includes people who I presume are adults using words like “democraps”
Squid Shark on April 21, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Yeah I’m an adult been one for over 60 years, so now your the decider on what words to use. Give it a rest sonny you don’t decide anything for me or sane people that want a real conservative to be our REPRESENTATIVE in Washington. So sonny go back to your mothers basement cause you don’t get to decide anything.

And I would expect as much from a squid, Semper Fi.

You can say it all you want, I can still judge it as silly and childish, no matter how old you are.
Makes you no better than those blockheads over at DU or DKos with their Retuglicans or KKKarl Rove or BFEE.

I saw a “typical” political website. Nothing unusual that reaches out and grabs you. And just like any other candidate running for office I’m told that Chris will take America from point A to point F. But he doesn’t bother to tell us the crucial info regarding points B-E. In other words, how’s he going to get there? How’s he going to get all these things accomplished? Conservative voters these days want to hear an effective/aggressive Battle Plan before we start tossing our $$ in that direction.

It’s not Chris Simcox.

Better for the seat to be temporarily blue than perpetually purple (which is what it is now). Supporting anyone opposing McCain from the right IS an effort toward knocking off a Democrat, in most of the ways that count.

You said the same thing about any challenge to Arlin Specter too. Is it that you really think that no RINO can be beaten anywhere or do you say this, before the election, just to deflate any kind of enthusiasm among conservatives before they even start? Is there any RINO you think can be beaten? Do you even want RINOs replaced by conservatives?

Wasn’t that Phil Gordon on Beck yesterday asking for help from D.C. to help combat Mexican drug thugs?
Interesting.
I suppose these guys envision a border where illegal Mexicans can get through, but not the criminals. Not really sure how they feel about drugs getting through, though.

Well I am a Conservative who supports Toomey over Specter and McCain over Simcox.
I touched on this in the other thread but my reasons are as follows:
1) McCain votes 80% of the time with Conservatives. He is not a RINO.
2) McCain is a high profile figure who can easily get media attention. We will need his voice against Obama’s obscene budget policy.
3) God bless them, but the Minutemen have been smeared as a Racist Organization and it has stuck with Hispanics. McCain will get the usual 30% in the general election while Simcox will get nothing, perhaps less than 15%. Unfair, but true. We lose McCain, we lose the seat.
4) The RNC will have to fund more money than they should have to in support of Simcox while while the race should be relatively safe (and cheap) under McCain. We need those funds for the Pennsylvania race because I fully expect Toomey to beat Specter in the primary.
On a side note, the reason why I think Toomey can win is because Pennsylvania is not as blue when it comes to Senate Candidates and there will be no Obama coattails to ride. The Dems had to put up a pro-life Democrat to knock off Santorum in an anti-Bush, anti-republican year. Toomey has a shot here if he can get out a focused message of fiscal conservatism and I think Specter running as an Independent would actually hurt the Democratic candidate more. Toomey could win the state with 40% of the vote.

Another thing, In a year where we may actually steal a seat from the Democrats by knocking off Chris Dodd why on Earth would we risk losing one in Arizona?
Pennsylvania on the other hand is worth the risk because Specter is not all that popular and could easily lose the General Election anyway, unlike McCain.

TARP I am willing to give him a pass on. All of the “experts” were screeching that our economy was going to collapse and a lot of people really didn’t know what to do. I do not approve of the vote, but I understand it. He did however vote against porkulis.
As for Campaign Finance Reform and Amnesty, these are two major issues that he failed on. However, they are only two issues. Otherwise he is pro-life, pro traditonal marriage, pro capital punishment, supported the surge, pro tax cut, pro free trade, a foreign policy hawk, a fiscal hawk and a proponent of a strong National Defense. He supports the young Eastern European democracies, is tough on Russia, believes in missile defense and supports Israel.
He doesn’t just vote with Republicans 80% of the time, but Conservatives 80% of the time.

Where do I send my check?
sabbott on April 22, 2009 at 9:27 AM
Exactly what do we have to lose? The goodwill of the media, Hollywierd, the welfare-mooching minorities or the sea of simpletons brainwashed in Publik Skool?
Forget McSame and that clueless loudmouthed bimbo he’s got for a daughter. 2012 will likely be America’s last chance to return to sanity, and even that’s assuming we have legitimate elections by then. We’ve all just seen the disasters that can happen when conservatives try playing nice when the opposition is throwing slander by the truckload.
Play ball…hardball.

I’ll send him a few sheckels and pray that McAmnesty is as successful in this race as he was in the last one.
