Video: Perez Hilton at the Miss USA contest?
posted at 1:35 pm on April 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Mix an almost-anachronistic beauty contest with an outspoken gay liberal blogger, and you get … a classically awkward moment. I’ve gotten a lot of e-mail about Miss California’s response to Perez Hilton about her stance on gay marriage, all of it cheering her defense of traditional values:
According to the person who clipped and uploaded the video, Miss California got booed, but if so, not by many. Perez himself shakes his head in annoyance, but what did he expect? These beauty contests are celebrations of kitschy Americana — of bathing suits and evening gowns, of “world peace” and apple pie.
In fact, one has to wonder why the organizers invited Perez to be a judge at all. Surely Perez’ readership doesn’t represent their core audience, and his celebrity-dish-loving readers could care less about Gracie Lou from North Dakota anyway. It’s a very strange choice. And Perez proves it by calling Miss California a “dumb b****” for not agreeing with him:
Stay classy, Perez. And I think you need something much stronger than a cocktail. (Thanks to my co-blogger Allahpundit for the second vid)

Let’s just say that the majority of Americans… a good 79% choose to define marriage as between a male and female. It has absolutely nothing to do with being a “homophobe” or being anti-gay… It’s just defining it so. Is this not a country of the people, by the people, for the people?
CynicalOptimist on April 20, 2009 at 2:05 PM
Good luck with being politically correct and proper. How’s that working out for you so far?

I see TTheo’s not alone in his idea that Perez Hilton acting like the douchebag that he is, is somehow a license to start smearing homosexuals en masse. I’m sure it will do wonders for Hot Air’s reputation. Keep up the crappy work!

Most gay-marriage supporters are hateful bigots. I don’t think that you are, personally, but most of the rest of them are – as perez hilton illustrates so clearly. ALso as the post Prop 8 goons illustrated. That is what the gay-marriage movement is all about.

Cynical, it doesn’t matter if they are “homophobes” or not, that’s what people like jetboy will call them. It’s all about “intellectual bullying”… in other words, insulting you till you are too afraid not to agree publicly.

If I was in charge of the Miss USA pageant, I’d put Perez Hilton on notice that my lawyers are looking into his comments and behavior.
Furthermore, if I was Miss California or her parents, I’d be talking to a lawyer as well.
Oink on April 20, 2009 at 2:07 PM
Ya, that never made much sense. Why is it that the folks who cry and throw tantrums about “labels” are the ones who toss them around the most?
I guess I am a liberalphobe, a homophobe, an Islamophobe, and illegalalienphobe, a murdererphobe, a (NY)Yankeephobe, a Lakersphobe, a bloodpuddingphobe, a rushhourtrafficphobe, an IRSphobe (ok that might fit).
People can “phobe off”. My dislike of a person usually comes after they open their mouth (or bang some keys on a keyboard).

Perez Hilton obviously had an agenda with this question: there was, in his mind, a right answer and an answer that would disqualify one from winning the crown.
If the litmus test for Miss USA is approving of gay marriage, then I hope the organization will be open and frank about this qualification in the future.
Bravo to Miss California for unapologetically offering her opinion on a personal matter of conscience rather than caving to a bully who she knew would punish her for not sharing his own opinion.

I am highly offended that this un-liberated woman was allowed to have an opinion and express it. Especially an opinion that reflects over 5000 years of moral, ethical and religious values. Surely, the norms of the last five years trump everything we’ve ever understood about family, marriage, society, child-rearing and nature.

Hate him if you will, but Perez has the ear of almost everyone in America under the age of 30. His website gets more hits in 15 minutes than HA gets all day. He’s doing something very right and in the process has become a very rich and famous young man.

Why deny civilization it for 5000 years? Probably because there’s no rational basis for homosexual marriage?
You’re the last person to be lecturing people on how to be an american. All you ever do on this issue is call everyone names and insult anyone who disagrees with you. Stop being such a homonazi if you want to be taken seriously on the issue as opposed to being seen as a bully.

Unfurl your brows. I am serious. It’s NOT about “liberty”
The gay agenda is about KILLING CHRISTIANITY.

JetBoy is under the delusion that SSM has no negative consequences for anyone, and we’d all join hands and sing around the campfire if only those bigots would get out of the way.
Of course, the real agenda of the people leading the SSM movement is to force or marginalize anyone, anywhere, who has an opinion other than “anal sex with men is the greatest thing on earth.” Listen up dude, I’m not going to sit here and agree that watching YOUR people, Jetboy, the ones you champion, burn down MY churches and you call me a bigot.
My church is under increasing threats from you and your ilk, and I WILL resist forced gay doctrine being shoved down my throat–literally, as your leaders want us do. I know you yourself make noises about religions not being in danger, but you also are the man who claims that wearing a cross around gay men is “provocative” and that those who do, especially little old ladies, deserve whatever happens to them. In short, while you are Catholic, your gayness comes first, and woe be anyone who stands in your way.
Vanceone on April 20, 2009 at 2:15 PM
People like jetboy have no concern for their ramifications of their actions. They only care about the getting their way for the moment.
TTheoLogan on April 20, 2009 at 2:15 PM
So if a Christian judge asks about world peace and the contestant says that she believes that “all religions are equal and must come together to foster love [blah blah blah]“… and the judge goes on a rant later about how she’s wrong and no one who ever holds an opinion opposed to Christianity’s superiority should lose… you’d be hailing the judge as some sort of hero? Right………

battleoflepanto1571 on April 20, 2009 at 2:16 PM
I’m no beauty pagent fan, but it does worry me.
It used to be that there was a seperation between personal relations and politics. This incident is just another case of that line being ignored. See also the firing of Mormons who donated to Prop 8.
Remember the 60′s battlecry that the personal was political?
That’s what I’m seeing again, only with a larger level of acceptance.
If you don’t have the right politics, the left feels free to go after you personally. Attack your employment because you donated to the wrong side. Make judgment against you in a beauty contest because you believe the wrong thing (what does that have to do with the contest?). Ect.
It’s only a matter of time until they become bold enough to touch the ultimate third rail. They will say that children need protection from indoctrination in “hateful bigotry”.
Whether “corrective action” will take place through the school system or through some more direct method I can not say, but that won’t matter. If it takes place in the school system Christain parents will resort to home schooling, which will then be forbidden, and the result will be the same.
Open civil war.
There are few thing in this world that people are willing to die for, and even fewer they are willing to kill for. God and family are two of them. Combine them by forcibly indoctrinating children again traditional Christain moral teachings, and you’ll have 30% of the population feeling that the only way to protect the immortal souls of their children is violent resistence.
It’s coming- and apparently the left just can’t see what they are doing. Tolerence requires both sides to accept the others right to believe differently without retaliation.
But today the left thinks tolerence means we just have to shutup and agree with them.

Don’t you think re-defining marriage, the bed-rock of civilization — could have some dangerous consquences? If we expand the definition to same-sex couples because everyone has the right to pursue happiness, there’s no justification for not expanding the definition to threesomes, foursomes, or whatever other kind of pairing/grouping people come up with in the name of pursuing “happiness”. What about polygamy? bigamy? bestiality? Once we destroy the concept of the nuclear family as it is traditionally understood, we’re faced with chaos and self-destruction. Look to any inner-city with preposterously high illegitimacy rates for an illustration. “Marriage” as a western institution between one man and one woman has survived for thousands of years for very good reason.
I’m not trying to pick a fight with you Jetboy — I actually really like and respect your comments — but I’m interested in your perspective on these issues.

1. Religious denominations lose when they’re persecuted by discrimination suits for not performing gay wedding ceremonies.
2. Likewise, religious denominations lose when they’re persecuted for the termination of tax-exempt status because they don’t promote the gay agenda.
3. Our children lose when they get the gay agenda shoved down their throats at every turn in every course.
I’m glad I decided to watch the Hallmark presentation about the Polish nurse who saved twice as many children as Schindler. Watching the intolerance of Nazis reminded me of the intolerance of those like Perez.
BuckeyeSam on April 20, 2009 at 2:21 PM
This movement would force pastors of Christian churches to perform these marriages that they do not condone or agree with at threat of a lawsuit.
So in essence, you’re forcing people to accept your unnatural behavior that they don’t agree with. Gee, how tolerant of you.
Actually, they do. Married couples get tax breaks, people with children get tax breaks. Married couples (man and woman) can procreate and produce another tax-paying citizen, thus negating the break in taxes, as it’s made up for by the tax-paying citizen that is produced from procreation. You and the rest of the soddomites in the word that are molesting each other’s anal orifice cannot produce children, therefore, you’re reaping the benefits, yet not producing the work.
Of course you, like any other soddomizing homosexual, will argue adoption, however, it’s been proven that children with a father figure AND a mother figure present turn out much better than those that don’t have both elements. Therefore, you’re going to turn out another sexually confused child that turns away from what is NATURAL (believe it or not, you sticking your little thing inside of someone’s anal crevice isn’t natural).

This, is a fact. The convictions of Christians will have no place in the coming world society. Christians have been on the forefront of standing up for human rights. They stopped the of burning a living wife along with her dead husband in India. When being born a girl wasn’t popular in the Greek society, it was the Christians who rescued the babies when they were left to die of exposure. It was Christians who stood up for the “witches” during the Salem witch trials and stopped those.
