Video: Perez Hilton at the Miss USA contest?

posted at 1:35 pm on April 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Mix an almost-anachronistic beauty contest with an outspoken gay liberal blogger, and you get … a classically awkward moment. I’ve gotten a lot of e-mail about Miss California’s response to Perez Hilton about her stance on gay marriage, all of it cheering her defense of traditional values:

According to the person who clipped and uploaded the video, Miss California got booed, but if so, not by many. Perez himself shakes his head in annoyance, but what did he expect? These beauty contests are celebrations of kitschy Americana — of bathing suits and evening gowns, of “world peace” and apple pie.

In fact, one has to wonder why the organizers invited Perez to be a judge at all. Surely Perez’ readership doesn’t represent their core audience, and his celebrity-dish-loving readers could care less about Gracie Lou from North Dakota anyway. It’s a very strange choice. And Perez proves it by calling Miss California a “dumb b****” for not agreeing with him:

Stay classy, Perez. And I think you need something much stronger than a cocktail. (Thanks to my co-blogger Allahpundit for the second vid)

In fact, one has to wonder why the organizers invited Perez to be a judge at all. Surely Perez’ readership doesn’t represent their core audience…

You’d be surprised how many gays watch these shows.

I’m not one of ‘em tho.

JetBoy on April 20, 2009 at 1:38 PM

I heard that Obama was considering appointing Perez the Tolerance Czar of his administration.

TTheoLogan on April 20, 2009 at 1:38 PM

“If I was Miss California, with half a brain…”

…then you wouldn’t be Perez Hilton. Failed on both counts.

Snowed In on April 20, 2009 at 1:38 PM

I think Miss California has a potential lawsuit here. She was way ahead in scoring from the other events. She probably would have won had not Hilton acted out of anti-Christian bigotry.

Jetboy, assuming your opinion has not changed from last week regarding people who disagree with you on this issue, is it safe to assume you consider this woman a “hateful, bigoted, closed-minded person” for what she said?

They still have a Miss America Pageant?

Good afternoon Extremists.

In fact, one has to wonder why the organizers invited Perez to be a judge at all.

Simple answer and always the easiest. The Miss U.S.A contest was produced by Donald Trump. Donald is good buddies with Perez and has had him on Celebrity Apprentice this year.

The guy who draws fake boogers on everyone demands intelligence from a girl who is being judged on looks?

Ladies and Gentlemen, and to some extent, trolls,

Kini on April 20, 2009 at 1:45 PM

The best example of psychological projection I’ve seen — well done Perez.

Yahoo’s headline has it this way:

Miss California fumbles over a controversial question during the pageant.

Wow, give an honest answer, one that fits the only definition of marriage society has recognized since the inception of civilization, and you’ve ‘fumbled’ the question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanna_Moakler

http://perezhilton.com/2009-04-20-pageant-organizers-speak-out-against-miss-california

And screw Keith Lewis…

“As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. Although I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.”

davenp35 on April 20, 2009 at 1:39 PM

Maybe. Just maybe. Because when it comes to bashing Christians, people like him seem to be experts.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I read something about gays having their merry way during the time of the persecution of Christians in the Roman empire. It would not surprise me in the bit if we read some account of one of them getting a “tingle in the leg” watching Christians being eaten by lions or made into human torches.

Princeps on April 20, 2009 at 1:53 PM

Maybe someone should have informed Miss California of the rules prior to her submission to the contest? Isn’t being a liberal, pro-abortion (I mean, pro-choice), amnesty for undocumented workers, pro-universal healthcare, anti-business, pro-Obama a requirement for any televised competition (whoops, competition implies that there are winners and losers…that can’t be correct)?

Miss California has to be dumb, she’s against gay marriage. Any other blond from California gets called a “dumb bi*ch” and its sexist. But, since she’s somewhat conservative, its OK. As a matter of fact, Jeanne Garofalatio will probably be calling her a neo-Nazi white supremist within the week.

Nothing to see hear, move along. Same ol’ leftist hypocrisy.

kingsjester on April 20, 2009 at 1:54 PM

People really have to stop being afraid of calling homonazis homonazis. Jetboy is a homonazi. He attacks anyone who disagrees with him and thinks he can depend on his minority status . He’s of the same ilk that physically attacked the Christians in San Francisco shortly after the marriage amendment passed there, which was barely reported on the news. He’s also of the same type that broke into the church of a conservative pastor in madison wisconsin and peed all over the building around 8 years ago when that pastor ran against the lesbian congresswoman there.

Seriously, why are people afraid to call him exactly what he is, which we would call ANYONE else on here if they didn’t claim to be gay. Someone who attacks anyone and calls them names if they don’t toe their line needs to be called exactly what they are, regardless of their sexual orientation.

TTheoLogan on April 20, 2009 at 1:55 PM

Geministorm on April 20, 2009 at 1:55 PM

crosspatch on April 20, 2009 at 1:55 PM

I went to college with a gay guy (a lot of gay guys … I have a BFA in Theatre) who was very involved in beauty pageants. He loved them! That said, I don’t think it was appropriate to have a gay man with an obvious agenda judging a contestant on whether or not she agreed with his politics. This is a beauty contest, not a run for politcal office. I think Perez is the dumb b*tch here (and whoever decided he’d make a good judge).

I agree. If you proclaim Christianity, you are to be the same every day of the week. If you claim to have any kind of moral base, then you need not practice situational ethics.

Besides, homosexuality is rampant in the muslim world. They just hide it really well.

Actually, they stone them.

We have in my little town here in Utah the current Miss Utah. The first one for our county. It was quite the big deal.

Anyway, our contestant went to the Miss America pageant, knowing she wouldn’t win. Why? She wore a one-piece swimsuit. The only one, I believe. It was due to modesty, etc. And that’s not appreciated nowadays.

Our previous Miss Utah was a soldier nurse who was serving on active duty in Afghanistan. Point is, yeah, some of these women are dumb blonds, but some are pretty good girls and good role models too.

Usually they are the ones who don’t win.

I wish the word homophobe would stop being used by gays.

Don’t hold your breath. It’s all about stifling dissent.
