Video: Perez Hilton at the Miss USA contest?

Mix an almost-anachronistic beauty contest with an outspoken gay liberal blogger, and you get … a classically awkward moment. I’ve gotten a lot of e-mail about Miss California’s response to Perez Hilton about her stance on gay marriage, all of it cheering her defense of traditional values:

According to the person who clipped and uploaded the video, Miss California got booed, but if so, not by many. Perez himself shakes his head in annoyance, but what did he expect? These beauty contests are celebrations of kitschy Americana — of bathing suits and evening gowns, of “world peace” and apple pie.

In fact, one has to wonder why the organizers invited Perez to be a judge at all. Surely Perez’ readership doesn’t represent their core audience, and his celebrity-dish-loving readers could care less about Gracie Lou from North Dakota anyway. It’s a very strange choice. And Perez proves it by calling Miss California a “dumb b****” for not agreeing with him:

Stay classy, Perez. And I think you need something much stronger than a cocktail. (Thanks to my co-blogger Allahpundit for the second vid)

What I don’t get is why Duh Donald and the organization behind this pageant hasn’t come out and chastised Perez Hilton for his profane rant against Ms. Prejean following the pageant. In general, beauty pageants are not taken very seriously, so to have one of your PAID judges publicly, arrogantly, and profanely trash a contestant after he judged the pageant makes the organization look hypocritical at worst, in addition to idiotic for choosing someone so stupid. You would think they would denounce Hilton for denigrating the pageant, and admit their grave mistake in hiring him. But I guess Donald is only concerned about ratings and ad $$ no matter who they come from, so to him any attention is ‘good attention.’ Disgusting.

Why did they let this freak of nature, who MS paints pictures of penises next to celebrities’ mouths, be a judge in the first place?

Being repulsed at a raving liberal for not having a modicum of self respect is like trying to explain your disgust to a cannibal for his dietary habits!

Really makes me sad to see so many within my own political party be so against gay marriage. And for some dubious reasons.

Why, JB? Why do you take this position as a personal affront? A significant majority of liberals/Democrats agree, so why is this a “my own political party” issue to you?

It isn’t to me. I have friends and family who are gay, and I don’t believe “marriage” is a term that defines their relationship in any way, and I object to a change in policy toward that arrangement.

That doesn’t mean that I would in any way wish to outlaw their behavior or relationships, although I disapprove of them from a religious viewpoint. And it doesn’t mean that I care for them any less.

As with the Democrat-Republican dynamic, the gay-straight one is confounding. Name a heterosexual whose public conduct and overt sexual decadence is manifest, and heterosexuals almost uniformly condemn that behavior. But I rarely hear condemnation of gays who engage in public decadence and freakishness from other gays. It seems that there is a circle the wagons mentality that prevents common sense from being expressed.

Hilton is just a freak and should be regarded and treated as such.
